Title: [IC] EVA keyboard storage case
Post by: ghostjuggernaut on Wed, 24 January 2018, 22:37:01
Good evening all.

Ive been looking at keyboard case options, and have been in contact with an EVA case manufacturer.  They offer cases for a wide range of products, and have 4 different sized cases for keyboards specifically.  I wanted to see if there is enough interest in a EVA case.  Their MOQ is 500 and the cases are customisable to an extent.  I was thinking about doing an embossed/debossed geekhack logo, but that would depend on the IC.  Their lead time is about 2 months, and the price before shipping should be under $20.  I wont know for certain until after the design and everything is finalized.  Im still early in talks with them, but figured might as well see what the community thinks before I waste any time.

Sizes offered:
L48xW20xH9.5CM >> I think this would be the best option since it will fit a TKL and maybe even 1800
L42xW20xH8.5CM
L41xW19xH8.5CM
L36.5xW16xH10.5CM

Yeah afaik they do gas, but the ones i have had in the past werent bad.  Not sure if they were older ones from the last OTD group buy or what, but I havent had any negative experience with these kinds of cases.  They are fairly rigid, and with the larger size we could have foam in it to keep things secure.

Yeah, I'd buy a 60% case.

Under $20? That would be nice!

I知 interested! TKL and 75% bags would be convenient!

Any chance a handle could be attached? Like the TX bags?

Yes they can do handles.  Im trying to get some more sample images from the manufacturer to give ideas of what we could do with it.  Still not 100% on costs, but based on ballpark number I assume it could be done for under 20/per.

Were the cases in the picture below made by EVA?  I've been trying to hunt one of them down for while.

They are hard cases, but not extremely rigid.  Below are some other examples of this type of case for different items.

Got an email about foam.  Below are the types that they offer.  They can precut it, but i was hoping for a pick and pull option.  I didnt get a price for their options, but we may be able to do pick and plug seperately but that would be a lot of work for me.  Otherwise we could just do solid foam and let people cut as needed.  Thoughts?

Yeah afaik they do gas, but the ones i have had in the past werent bad.  Not sure if they were older ones from the last OTD group buy or what, but I havent had any negative experience with these kinds of cases.  They are fairly rigid, and with the larger size we could have foam in it to keep things secure.

Is this why the Mira case smells a bit funny? Kind of like a smokey metallic sort of smell?

I'd be interested in multiple, really solid price

I値l reach out and ask if they can do multiple sizes for the same MOQ.

If they are separate MOQs, would everyone that wanted 60% be okay with the larger one?

No, the MIRA case smells like that because the cases were left open in a room where people smoke a lot.

If I can, I値l try and work out a proxy option. Not sure how logistics would work on that but I壇 give it a shot. I think we値l need all the help we can get in order to make an order so I知 not opposed to shipping proxies.

In that case I'll put my vote in for TKL and 65% cases, with pick n pull foam of the lumpy looking variety as found in Pelican cases (top of the stack in your foam pic). Also, if it's Geekhack themed then black with orange trim and/or zip might be nice.  :thumb:

Pretty much what i was thinking.  I like the idea of a debossed logo, not sure on size.  But black with orange zipper trim and gh themed pull tabs.  They have offered to send some samples to me for cost of shipping, so once I know this is something we can make happen ill start working out the details and get something in hand to determine if it will be worth the trouble, as well as nailing down some prices etc.

Over the next day or two I知 gonna work on a concept of what I have in mind and see what everyone thinks. Hopefully everyone likes it and I can send it to the manufacturer to a get a quote in order. It seems like there is a lot of interest and we should be able to reach the MOQ. I plan to do things in the old style where ppl sign up then invoice etc. I need to make sure I can do it without getting PayPal locked down as well.

So we've kind of looked at the outside of the case (logo, etc.) How about inside? Things like netting for cables, elastic straps, integrated padding etc.?

As an example, this is how I would love to store and carry my TKLs.

I like that a lot actually.  Ill send the pic over and ask if they can do something like that for this case.

I'm in for two TKLs. Would prefer minimal decoration/logo. Maybe a Velcro patch (like goruck bags) so people can customize?

I can get behind this.  I would still like to incorporate gh colors and zipper pulls, but velcro would allow more options.

Here is an image of the foam I just received.

They said that they cut the foam themselves, but will ask about smaller cutouts for more control over sizing.

They said that this is one of their cases, so take it with a grain of salt.  They said they can do something similar with a flap, but will cost extra for prototyping costs.  Overall would be under a dollar per case.  Here is a sample image they sent along with it.

The 48x20 is the largest case they offer. I知 sure they can do bigger but they would need new molds which probably be beyond this gb. Maybe something to consider for the future though.

I am currently trying to iron out details on the case and will hopefully have a quote soon, as well as images that I can start a GB.  I will shoot them these pictures and see if they are familiar with the design.

I think 60/65 would be good, as long as it's large enough to also fit 68 keys like the fc660c/m/clueboard etc

Would be in for one only if there is a foam option that fits 60% or 65% snugly. I have the aforementioned OTD EVA case and while it fits TKL's perfectly, 60% boards slide around in it. A big empty cavity is definitely not a one-size-fits-all.

A full cavity foam insert with pre-cut breakaway sections is a decent one-size-fits-all option

Just wanted to post a quick update on all of this.  Manufacturer is on break for CNY.  That coupled with communication issues, I want to reach out to US manufacturers and see what they can do with pricing etc.  Ill update this thread with any news I get.

Not dead, but not much movement.  Have reached out to a few other manufacturers, but information is slow coming.  I may just go back to the first manufacturer and work around their products.  I was hoping to have more customization than what they offer, but its not looking like thats going to happen.

Im pretty busy through the end of March, and halfway into April.  Hopefully i can finalize details by the end of April and go from there.

I don't think anyone will really care if there are no customization options available, embossment, colors, etc.  plain black boring case that fits a keyboard for under $20 is all anyone is really after.  I'll reiterate that I think 60/65/68% is the way to go for this case!

I would definitely be interested in at least a 2-3 bags/cases! Not terribly worried about logo/design, though I am partial to the dimpled/circles in a grid design.

I personally don't care if the cases are big enough to fit up to 96/104/1800 layouts, but if they could fit up to 80%/TKL that would be awesome for TKL and 75% boards I have.

I was speaking with a friend recently and I think having a somewhat no frills design with a small Velcro loop area on the top would be nice. Then maybe run some patches for that area alongside the GB or after.

Also working on getting more details from the original manufacturer for colors and material. I致e pooped in a native Chinese speaker that will hopefully be able to better help the communication get sorted.

Hopefully this can progress soon. I値l let everyone know when I get info.

The initial problem that slowed this down, was communication with the manufacturer.  I still have all the info and will let you all know if/when I revisit the case.
