Are those wheelwriter keys or is that from one of those PS/2 Mod 25/30 word processor setups?

Edit: Nevermind, I see the shift on the number legends, mix of wheelwriter and stock keys?

I want this board. Gray case + black caps = drool. I will have it, or the like, I don't care how long it takes.

Thanks!

The one on the bottom is NIB and I bought it locally. The one on top came from Ebay. The seller pulled it from a school. After some light cleaning and replacing a bad spring you can hardly tell the two apart.

Just think how many more of these are boxed and filed somewhere that someone has forgotten about.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That's nice.  The red Clack - lucky you :)

At least I can validly nominate BS Clacks in any future clack sales, since I got my Model M :)

Yesterday I pulled one of the dirty space savers, that I bought some time ago, out of the closet.

Took me nearly 3 hours to clean it...

It started with this (I bought it exactly like that):

And ended with this:

I added a brand new set of ssk keycaps from unicomp, a rgb-kit and a HO (a good board needs a HO).  ;D I wanted the classic style.

It doesn't smell anymore (it really smelled like .... I don't know) and now looks fresh and clean. I think it was worth the time.

typed on my fresh ssk  ;)

^ looks great!

I would like an SSK one day.  The Model M takes up just a little bit too much space on my desk (compared to the HHKB).

Great job Snoop. I have a few questions:

What's the date?
Were the keycaps from Unicomp 1 piece or 2?
My SSKs have black barrel plates (or whatever they are called), can you tell by the color when the approximate manufacture date was? Mine are both from Dec of 1987.
SSKs for everyone!

This one is from 91. The keycapset is 2-piece (except some modifiers). Afaik they usually deliver 2-piece keycaps, except when you order blank blacks; these are one-piece.

I also have a 93 with a black barrel plate. Also a 88, but forgot which color this one has, its somewhere in a box. I can check for exact dates tomorrow if you want.

I suppose I should add one of my SSKs here.  I somehow managed to acquire three of them before realising how valuable they are: and in that regard, as much as I'd like to spray or dye one of them black (assuming I could find white-on-black keycaps to match), maybe I won't.  Apologies for it being a little grubby, I guess that's a side-effect of someone who often eats at her computer.

My planned "mod", inasmuch as it is one, is to get hold of some keycaps from Unicomp to UKify it.

Edit: forgot to mention, they're dated 2004: which may not be as desirable a vintage as some, but I love them. :)

Yeah, I'm glad I managed to snag myself some of them: my clumsy fingers aren't so good with the smaller return keys. :D

My order for UK keys is on its way now; I half wish I'd ordered some interestingly-coloured keys at the same time, but considering my dubious aesthetics, in the interests of taste, it's probably best that I didn't!

I'm new to GH but have been using either an M4 or SSK for years now.

Snoopy said hi to me in the New Members forum and suggested I post here. So here we go.

The first one I got in 1997 at a local computer store for $12. I took it home to try it out to see if I'd like it. Obviously I did. The store had two but when I went back the other one was gone.  :-[

The others I found on either E-bay or a local recycler in the early/mid 2000's.

As for typing on them, I love it. But they are noisy and I have become pretty heavy handed.

I used the M4 for a few years too. I assume its mechanical also except instead of a buckling spring it has "rubber springs". I can post a pic if anyone's interested.

I took one out of storage the other day and found that there were a lot of rattling bits in the case. So I hooked it up and sure enough the top plate wasn't tight to the metal plate and it was causing some of the hammers to misfire. So I'm in the process of doing the bolt mod. Thanks ripster and GH wiki.  :thumb:

The reason I found you guys was I got interested in seeing if there are any other mechanical KBs out there that are worthy. I didn't know there was such interest. Several years ago all I could find was Unicomp and a couple others that used what I now know as Alps switches.

I'm presently test driving a Matias Quiet Click TKL (mostly because I like its form factor) I also have a CM Storm QuickFire with MX browns on the way. I also picked up a Siig Minitouch with Alps white (simplified? XM?) which I'm typing on now. I like the form factor but the ISO layout with the big enter key sticks if you don't hit it just right.

Anyone know if Matias switches can be used to replace the standard Alps switches?

Love seeing all the old SSKs here. You guys are so creative with all the colored keycaps! Hey Snoopy, whats a red clack?

And also, do we always have to use the verification letters (captcha) when we post? Pretty annoying.

Nice boards, it's cool that you have a original box for them and that they have those additional printings on the keycaps (and also that red control key is very uncommon).

Hey Snoopy, whats a red clack?

this thread should help: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39794.0
Basically clacks are little keycap shaped plastic skulls that are available for different switch types. I love to use one of them as little highlight on esc position. They are hand-made by a geekhack member and are available in many different colors.

About that verification: I think it's only for new members. It will stop on a certain post count. But I'm not sure when.

Posting here to join, but I also have a question. First things first:

My question is how do I turn on/off the numpad functions? My computer seems to boot into the numpad sometimes. And for now I've been unplugging the re-plugging the board, but surely there's a key or combination to press to turn the numpad functions on or off...

Somehow that keyboard just looks so right sitting there :)
