Finally received, tuned it up.   NO GO,  overheats.  There's not enough clamping pressure on this design..

OKokok.. After 3 weeks of deliberation.  Tp4 has finally decided to purchase this orico enclosure.

Decision base::

1.  Clamshell design, securing harness force in the Direction of the external casing. This is important, since it's far more difficult to ensure good thermal contact in slide-in type cases.

2.  Cable adapter type, instead of direct stick-type.  With these really long levers, mishap could break the adapter or the laptop port. Cable seems safer.

2.  It's $36 vs $Bajillion for the 40Gbps adapters.

3.  $Bajillion 40Gbps adapters seem ill-advised since pcie 4.0 future drive compatibility on such adapters is not a certainty as they're so new.

Ya they're fine. Make sure you have room as nvme's are typically longer than an ssd enclosure when u factor in the adapter size, might not fit in a laptop bay slot.

You'll limit the nvme to < 600gb/s tho, probably not noticeable less u work with BIG files

Just get the cheaper 3.0. I have 4.0 on my mobo, but the only "cheap" option for SSD for it is a 1tb sabrent at $200 (which is faster than what I have, but not peak speed claimed by 4.0).

We long since passed the point of diminishing returns, which seems to be somewhere around 600-800MB, WAYYYY below even what 3.0 drives can do.

Benchmarks are fine and good, but it's not always indicative of real world performance. Not to mention, just like NVME, most of the 4.0 drives are just 3.0 drives shown to be forward compatible with a higher price tacked on (slow ones at that). I have a 4.0 drive, it's slower than my 3.0 drive, which even while being one of the faster ones is not noticeably faster than my fastest sata ssd.

To really go faster we need an architecture change, not just in hardware but in software as well. A lot of things were done in the past to combat slow drives, now that we have fast drives those same tweaks are now hurting performance.

Ok, dis' one, works. FINALLY. sigh....

Peak temperature 45C passive cooling @ sustained 800MB/s transfer.

This Slug type case has a flat bed, to which a 1.5mm pad fits neatly beneath the ssd, and you can push on it, because there are no components to bend and snap off on a docking pcb.




This particular design is also nice because you get to conduct heat directly to both sides of the enclosure. 

The top, I used a 1.25mm thermal pad,  between the ssd and bottom plate I used a 1.5mm pad. Very snug and because the bottom is FLAT, there's no pcb bending. BENDING is dangerous.

The included 1.5mm white top Thermal pad is the wrong height and will bend your ssd Pcb. It's also taped on and removing it destroys the pad, so you gotta have your own. (<.<)

Also have to supply a 1.5mm pad for between the ssd and bottom plate, this pad is crucial for increasing and evening the mounting pressure.


VS,  This other common type, where the docking pcb has stuff beneath along the whole length, Which will bend if pressured. Not a fan of this type of design.

It's really heavy, lots of pocket sag, LOLOL,

Sabrent is the main importer of this model state side.

There's another generic under eluteng.  They sell refurb of the sabrent model on ebay for $20ish.

The eluteng is $32 on amazon. and the sabrent is $40

I also tried out an actively cooled one,  DON"T,  it turns on and off the fan dependent on the powerstate of the device, it's annoying as hell if you leave it plugged in for long.

You need the 1.5mm and 1.25mm thermal pads. for this model,  1.5 between the ssd and base, 1.25 between ssd and top plate  if you don't mind a slight protrusion on top, you can use 1.5 there as well. 

they sell 1mm and .1 and .25mm thermal pads, you can get a pack of each and roll your own.
