Replacing cable from a Cherry G80-1800 HQU / PS2 (?) to USB
« on: Mon, 11 February 2019, 06:42:04 »
Hi guys !

I found this Cherry G80-1800 yesterday, tryna make it clean and working, but i'm also kinda newbie into "vintage" keyboards.

The cable has been cut, but in order to replace i'm trying to understand what the hell are those connectors corresponding to ? I can't find any documentation or anything that could help me understanding where is the data, Vcc, ground, clock, ... to solder a USB connector to it.

I read a lot of topics on the platform but no one's talking about connectors issues, so i hope it's crystal clear to you and that you would be kind to help me bring this baby back to life  ;D

212691-1

212693-2

Thank you guys, if you need any informations just ask me, it's next to me :D

1. you have to figure out what color wire/pin relates to which pin on the original ps2 connector. i'm not familiar enough with the controller in the 1800 to advise there.
2. you will probably need a ps2 to usb converter, don't think you can just wire it to a usb cable. although, i could be wrong.

backwards from what you want to do but the pinouts should be helpful.

updated my post.
there is a big following for 1800s. you might be able to find info on one of the discussions about an alternate controller for the 1800 or similar type thread.

I checked a lot of topics since yesterday, and no one is talking about that kind of controller (and i checked a lot of topics...) so that's why i made it a topic to know which color is which pin...

not that it will be identical, but i have a ps2 cherry g84-4100 that i can check the pinout for you. guessing that all their ps2 pinouts would be similar if not the same....

Unfortunately they are not all similar, for example most of the PS2 stuff i saw had an orange wire for the ground and a blue for the +5V... non them are here in this case...

But maybe cherry used the same color code for his wires on all their PS2 stuff ? That's where your look could be VERY interesting !

either wire in a new ps2 cable and use an external ps2 to usb converter, or, if you have room in the case, you could wire in a ps2 to usb converter inside the case and either have the usb cable running out or add a usb connector for a removable cable.

or replace the controller altogether.

DUDE this is perfect; exactly what i needed ! But i quadruple checked and i dont have any PS2 stuff here

So i'll try to connect to the right pins of a USB cable and hope this works, and if it is, i think i will solder and install a little micro-USB or type C female in the keyboard ;)

I'll tell you if it works by the way ! Maybe this keyboard was thrown for a good reason  :-X

you normally can't just swap pins/connectors to go from ps2 to usb.

you'll need a converter, even a cheap one.

most usb keyboards are backwards compatible to ps2 via just swapping pins/connectors. like my earlier link.
https://www.instructables.com/id/USB-to-PS2-convertor/

looks like it works one way but not the other, and for the direction you want to go, you'll need a converter.

ooooh ok i better understand, i'll need an active adapter this way... so i'll need a new ps2 connector, this active adapter and  THEN i'll be able to know if i can use this

thx a lot man you've been my hero today !

And i've got another question : to know if it is worth to buy a cheap active adapter or not, if i connect only the alimentation wires (here green and black) to a 5V source, do you know if the keyboard should work  ? by work i mean, the LEDs lighting up and NumLock/CapsLock/ScrollLock be working  ?

Cause that's what i just did, and the 3 LEDs light up when i connect the two wires to the source, but immediatly turn off and the Lock keys do nothing on them...

make sure you report back then. would love to hear how it goes.

also, looked at the sticker again on the back of your board.... 1800HQ.... mmmm... cherry double-shots....

even if the controller is shot, the caps & switches are well worth it.

it's more than just adding power to it to see if it will work.
yeah, it might blink once it has power and the device "boots" but won't to anything else without communication with a host (computer, etc..).

OK good i know one thing : it's not completely dead haha

Yes i saw that it was double shots, and i really liked those black switches (i usually use blues on a recent chinese keyboard) and the global feeling that's why i wanted to bring it back to life.

Now i need this active adapter to make this work, and find a PS2 mouse or ****ty keyboard to take the PS2 cable and put it on the CHERRY. It will take some time to find all these, i'll give news there when i have some ;)

active adapters can be found for $5-10. i'd say it's worth a shot.

or you can start stripping the board to build a custom 1800....
https://thekey.company/collections/tkc-1800

....the adapter is definitely cheaper.

First i'm gonna find a PS2 cable cause my desktop computer has a PS2 port  :thumb:

But i got another "problem" : i'm french... so i use AZERTY keyboard... I also use QUERTY keyboards but i feel better on our strange layout, so i think changing some letters will be enough cause i've got all the special caracters in mind when typing, but it's sad to have double-shots keys but not in your layout  :-\

well, you could rearrange the keys to be close to azerty (profile might be off) & do a remapping of the keys with a programmable converter like hasu or soarer (lets you setup whatever keymap you want with layers, macros, etc...)

Hasu
https://github.com/tmk/tmk_keyboard/tree/master/converter/ps2_usb
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=69169.0 (usb to usb)

Soarer
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=17458.0

as far as matching caps, post a WTB ad in the classifieds of this forum.
there was... what... 2 sets up for grabs a while ago..
Cherry Double Shot keys FR ISO G80-1800
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=14696.0

also search on deskthority.net

i've been using blank caps on two of my boards for years now, i don't even pay attention to whats on the caps anymore.
specific layout.... i know what you mean, and it's tough. i've been looking for an apple m0118 in an iso layout that's specific to "your side of the pond". but i'm looking for it because of the number, size & placement of the keys compared to the m0116 which is the US variant.

if not, i'm sure someone would be willing to take the 1800 off your hands (including myself)

I was curious if that worked for him, I don't want to fry my board. I'm really young and don't know much about this stuff. Also, along with your post, are the blacks interchangable? Sorry for necroing.

if it worked... @Dograme would have to respond. but if it's just missing a cable, this should work.

the black one that's bare with a little bit of shrink tubing is the shielding that goes around the wires in the cable assembly and is usually tied to ground. the glossy/darker black wire is the one you want to use as ground. the other one is not as important but should probably be tied to ground as well (usually the shield of the PS2 plug... outer metal ring)
