Laptop stickers?
« on: Mon, 08 October 2018, 19:28:50 »
When I was in 'college' laptops I saw were completely void of stickers (including mine), though these days it seems like everyone has stickers on their laptops. Are laptop stickers the new bumper sticker?

Also, do you think Microsoft's 'Surface as a Service' inititive might affect the spread of laptop stickers, and perhaps even undermine the underlying entity behind said stickers?

Yea, it's the new bumpersticker..

The change from yesteryear is by 2 primary pressures.

LOW cost of all mass produced items.

---- The china button, has made all items so cheap, that anyone can have them, constant and rapidly.

Reduced TimeSpan in order To Express individuality.

---- People have less time to make an impression given the pace of the modern lifestyle, therefore they need to make a Stout impression right away, which typically involves direct and extravagant visuals..

My computers are unadorned, except for a sticky label covering the webcams.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

My zero sticker policy was instituted because of wallet size and laziness :))

I think they're ugly as heck, but some can be classy. I like the Linux ones where they're put on the handrest of the laptop and say "Powered by Linux" or something of the sort.

I have one on the top half of my MBP case. It's a rainbow Apple one.

On a previous MacBook, I had stickers all over the case but not on the Mac itself. I always try and keep my electronics pristine for the sake of re-sell.

I just got a 2018 MacBook Pro and that thing is too damn beautiful to put a case on it though!

Hey, man.  :'(

I love the older Apple logo colors and decided it would be fitting on my MBP's woodgrain case as it completely covered up the actual logo on the computer. I don't use MBPs much these days, but that machine in the picture is a 2010 MBP with Linux installed; I used to have a rainbow Apple logo on the actual lit-up logo, and since the new woodgrain case covered it up I got a sticker to put on the case.

Yeah, same here. I learned after buying an iPod shortly before the iPod Video came out; I engraved the iPod with my name, then a few months later the Video was announced. Couldn't sell my older one for a while, but, eventually, a friend bought it for way less and had the name scuffed out. Ever since then I almost always put a case on an expensive electronic and don't put any markings on it in case I decide to resell so I can "upgrade" to a newer model. (Though now most of my older devices are kept out of sentimentality.)

Awhile ago, I had a custom gaming laptop built and had them remove all the decals, anything that could be used to identify it's contents and function removed. On the outside it looked like something someones grandma might've still used; but on the inside it was a pretty powerful machine for a laptop, thought of it as a preventative measure against theft as well as just looking aesthetically clean.
