Title: Keyboard enthusiasts by location ...
Post by: enoy21 on Fri, 14 October 2011, 06:22:10
Are you interested in keyboards ?  Post your country here !

The purpose is to get an idea of areas of the world that have one of the bigger keyboard enthusiast communities. I recognize that the Western world is really starting to take off in terms of mechanical keyboards and it amazes me how life runs in circles.  We are reverting back to the days of big heavy keyboards that work and LAST.  (Much like the days of muscle cars vs todays plastic hybrids)

So where are you located ?

North America - 124
--USA- 99
--Canada- 27
--Greenland- 1

Central America/Caribbean- 2
--Trinidad and Tobago- 1
--Mexico- 1

South America - 5
--Brazil- 2
--Argentina- 2
--Chile- 1

Asia - 18
--Singapore- 3
--Vietnam- 4
--China- 1
--Malaysian- 4
--South Korea- 2
--Phillipines- 2
--Hong Kong- 1
--Taiwan- 1

Eastern Europe/European Union - 103
--Sweden- 12
--Germany- 19
--United Kingdom- 11
--Poland- 7
--Austria- 3
--Greece- 3
--France- 3
--Denmark- 4
--Spain- 6
--Italy- 3
--Latvia- 2
--Finland- 6
--Portugal- 2
--Switzerland- 2
--Isle of Man- 1
--Russia- 1
--Netherlands- 6
--Czech Republic- 3
--Slovenia- 1
--Norway- 2
--Belgium- 1
--Turkey- 1
--Hungary- 1
--Croatia- 1
--Slovakia- 1
--Belarus- 1

Middle Eastern Region- 2
--Israel- 2

Africa - 0
--South Africa- 1 (Yey finally)

Oceania Region- 26
--Australia - 24
--New Zealand- 2

Antarctica - 0
--

Country/region placement based on UN groupings (http://www.internetworldstats.com/list1.htm#geo)

Since I wasn't able to do a poll I will try and keep this updated with results. Perhaps some marketing guys would want to reference this for an idea of interest levels and increase vendor support for your area.

USA. Itd be kinda creeper like if we assembled a map with pinpoints by state, provience, etc (not city just for privacy reasons). But it'd also be cool.
Title: Keyboard enthusiasts by location ...
Post by: enoy21 on Fri, 14 October 2011, 07:14:07
That would be cool to do that.    There are web modules that allow that , some go by IP address and do it automatically and only list the ISP location.   I don't expect peoples city/province whatever though.

That's the cool part about GeoIP, it's not really that accurate at pinpointing your city.

BTW I know a guy who works at Mawson Base in Antarctica (cycles in and out on multi-month cycles) and takes two 87key Filcos (I don't know what switch he is using nowadays) with him on every trip because he needs a board he trusts will work in some trying conditions (and frozen rubber domes are not so effective, apparently). Kinda doubt he's on GH though. If you are then you know who you are, give us a shout out.

That is an incorrect assumption. We are getting a considerable growing interest from SA, Asia, Israel and Oceania. I think the poll is interesting.

Don't think my statement was incorrect. The site IS dominated by EU/NA populations. If the intention of the survey is to find out the extend of growing minorities then yes, I will give you that, it is somewhat interesting to know.

One  with a desire to learn more and look at more options makes you enthusiastic about Keyboards in my book.  More so than someone who has 6 but knows little about them other than the shape and colors of the LEDS.

Shortly after making it I wished I had made the title more like " Keyboard interest by location "  Or something similar so people wouldn't shy away feeling " inexperienced"

As for the goal of the poll ?
Part was curiosity
Part was born out of the fact that it seems I've seen others from area's of Europe struggling with trying to order from PChome and some obscene shipping costs from other companies.

So I hoped that some vendors and manufacturers would see area's of interest that might increase availability for them.   Of course there is a language barrier and and this will sway the participants , but last I checked Chinese and English were the two biggest languages in the world for different reasons

( Off subject but interesting )

http://www2.ignatius.edu/faculty/turner/languages.htm

Chinese is first in population , but English is first in sheer number of countries as of 1997, 115 countries peak english. Based on the fact that so many Manufacturers of the favorite keyboards on this site come from an Asian country says alot about the popularity there.  So perhaps this will show the Western interest to increase supply in this area of the world....

Also ..... It's interesting.

Welcome back. My daughter has wanted to move to Japan for years and took a couple years of Japanese language in school.  It's not a language that's generally offered in our area. She was one of only 2-3 students doing an in school  internet based class.

I had thought of that once I saw how broad this had gotten, but we would need cities for the larger countries.  There are plugins though that allow a user to type in their city and it auto pins it to the map.

In addition, if Australia gets broken down by state then the US probably should too.
I'd make Australia a single category if I were you or this will start to get out of control quickly.

I'll drop Aus back to solo.

Yeah since taking it out, the initial issue that caused me to put in is getting to me.   It just bugs me not having any kind of breakdown under the heading.   Atleast NA has atleast 3 countries to choose from Although I would argue that physically Greenland should be NA.

I may go back and ad the Ausie breakdowns again.  It's bothering me.

Hey man I agree they are physiologically  connected to NA , but everything about them screams Europe. I don't know that they fall under any of the flexible nonstandardized continent categories, so they would probably go under NON-Continental for the Island. Recently owned by a European country but laying in the NA region and disassociating from both.

Greenland with Europe?  Shares tectonic structures with North America.  Plus the Danes don't really do anything to help Greenland any more.

Not other than sending 590million$ a year which is quite a lot considering theres only 55thousand living in Greenland

About.com and the Wiki say they are technically NA although a territory of Denmark which is Europe.   I'm not the most educated man and much less so in geography but I don't ever remember being taught that Greenland was in NA. Of course..... I never heard much about Greenland period.

NYC, NY (USA, FYI)

I feel like the standard setup of seven continents would make sense for this. Just check out the "continent" entry on wikipedia and look at the pretty colors on that picture. NA would get Greenland as well as Trinidad and Tobago. Australia and New Zealand would get lumped under "Oceania." I'm not like a professional uh... geographist, but I'm pretty sure that's how it's usually done.

I'm considering a few ideas on some slight changes to the formatting , I kind of like the idea of using a set parameter or listing. The problem is that 7 Continents is not an official regulated boundary.  It's just land masses.  So perhaps I'll shift it to regions which is closer to what the geologists use, or use these About.com lists which are the first hits when searching : Continent vs region .

http://geography.about.com/library/maps/blrindex.htm

This one looks more like someone had some spare time and decided to make a list.
http://geography.about.com/od/lists/a/officiallist.htm

Or something like this , Although I would keep the continents at the broad level and not break them down into such small sub groups.

Greenland is technically a "Super Island" and happens to be the word's largest.

Australia is DEFINITELY a continent because it has a distinct land mass, flora, fauna, and culture.

Observe:

Canada is considered part of North America although sometimes they play for the other team.

Sorry for the slow update guys. After "The attacks" and two of my systems getting hits, I decided to Re-install linux on my old laptop and try a few new things..... I feel much safer this way..... Now to decide on a browser and to see if I can get Firefox 11 (nightlies) running on here.

U.S.A. (for now)

I've been planning two 60-120 day coastal trips. The first beginning in Panama and will spend quite a bit of time in Chile (for obvious reasons) before making my way to Ushuaia. The second, later trip will be up the east coast terminating in Brazil. I believe South America is the relatively untapped future.

Hmm... I'd like to kill you too. I'd make you suffer a bit too - you know, just to get revenge for all the annoying posts geekhackers have had to read. Then I'd steal your "NIB" Model F. (even though it's not really NIB)

I have a friend on a Austin area Citizen Water Board.

Talk about power.  It's like the movie Chinatown if you control water in Texas.

I still don't think Texas should be considered US in this poll.  Witness Ron Paul and that other guy.

No ****.  The LCRA (Lower Colorado River Authority) is huge in Texas, especially since they also control (hydroelectric) power.

My post was a bit of an exaggeration for comedic purposes.  Really city-level public services are pretty good here; it's the state-level services/funding that sucks.  Water and electric are great, education sucks.  This is mainly due to the (major) cities having Democratic leadership while the state is Republican.  And the only reason that phenomenon exists is due to gerrymandering.  Otherwise, the state would vote Democratic.

I saw Rick Perry talk at a Math Counts competition (sponsored by Raytheon and several oil companies - shocker).  Worst. Speech-giver. EVAR.

Official transcript:

"Math... uhhh... important... errr... it's difficult... ummm... engineers... uhhh... good job everyone... ummm.... Yeah, I forgot the rest."

People were leaving in the middle of the speech, and the winning kids on stage just watched in bewilderment.

I notice that you guys are continually comparing a single country to a continent of countries.

Also , trust me , I never considered Greenland North America , but I had to use something as a reference because you can't just go by " continents" anymore.  Middle east and Oceana and such needed a home. So I figured the UN regions was the way to go.... You want it changed ?  Appeal to your UN representative !!

I can't call myself a keyboard enthusiast yet. I like my Dell RT7D20, used it for 10 years, but got a Majestouch 2 Cherry mx blue yesterday. The sound is really, really nice. (oh and it feels okay too )

Living in the Netherlands.

You made a good choice with the MX blue cherry switches

Kick ass. I'm actually heading down to Miami next week to hit some of our locations then heading north to Merritt Island and then on to Daytona area ( I can't believe they are sending me there during speedweek.... )

I'm gonna miss my keyboard while down there :(

Actually it looks like I might miss speedweek by a couple of days.

I still think IP sweeping is a LOT more efficient and gets rid of those jokers that claim to be from Trinidad & Tobago.  I mean, that is a physical impossibility.

Also asking for Americans to respond doesn't take into account inherent American Laziness from being #1 all the time.  See "Ripster's Downwardly Mobile Theorem - DMT" (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?26154-Ripster-s-DMT-Quality-of-Geekhack-Posts-Is-Inversely-Correlated-To-Tapatalk-Volume).

While i agree that there is the opportunity for falsehoods,. IP Sweeping doesn't account for the same account accessed from multiple locations (consider smart phones and public wifi) It also doesn't account for proxy servers and webfilters that may have 50,000 people coming through a couple of IP's.  And really , what would they be gaining from lying about it and throwing out some third world country ?

Why is trinidad impossible? I used to have a few guildmates in Wow that were playing from there.

Well , 2 examples.....

My former company I had Websense installed for all of our 500 PC's so they all went to one of 2 North American Servers acting as hosted proxies. Websense is used ALOT of places.

Now all of our 6000 employees are on a managed VPN and may show only a few IP's as gateways to the internet.

While I like maps and I like the ease of use. You would need to be able to create filter rules

Only show active accounts
Only show one IP per account
Use the IP most often accessed from

etc... etc...
