I was thinking for the next group buy it would be cool to have a Vim escape key.  Maybe a good color for the key is whatever they chose for the shamrock key, unless there's something better. Would anyone be interested?

This is what the attached SVG looks like:

This is how it would look in white-on-green:

Update: A version with the whole name 'Vim' can be found on page 2:

Personally, I'd say it should be the colon key

The colon isn't a bad idea, but it's clearly less powerful than ESC. Other noteworthy keys are H, J, K, L for navigation, I for insertion, D for deletion, and G for teleportation. However, ESC remains the key to rule all keys.

I was skeptical at first at how it would look, then I saw the shamrock key...all doubt was washed from my mind.

I'm in for at least a couple!

I don't like the idea of putting the vim logo on a key I don't use in vim (inoremap jj ).
Cherry MX Blue: Filco Majestouch Tenkeyless. Cherry MX Black: TG3 KBA-BLTD-5RBUVS (Police Cruiser keyboard). Cherry MX Clear: KBC Poker (modded with Ergo Clears) Cherry MX Brown: Goldtouch GTC-077 USB numpad. Buckling Spring: IBM Model M 1391401 (1989-01-03 and 1991-11-21).

Are the "i" and the "m" too fine to be included as part of the design? I think the "V" looks kind of unbalanced without them.

It was tight so I had to deviate from the source image a little. Notably the serifs on the 'i' and 'm' were too fine, so I drew the letters sans-serif. How's this?

Update: Got some, but not all, serifs. :)

Sounds good to me. :)

If there's enough interest here it may be possible to do a group buy for just this key, rather than wait for round 4. Anyone have experience ordering from SP?

Great...looks like we have a lot of interest to move ahead with a group buy. Here's the list so far. If you were uncertain about number of caps, I took the lower number from your post:

HaaTa: 2
gilgam: 2
keyboardlover: 1
Fwiffo: 1
hate: 4
n12: 1
NOMiS: 1
placebo guy: 2
inlikeflynn: 1
harrison: 1
daerid: 2
negidaku: 2
cgoldberg: 1
mtl: 4

So far we have a total of 25. I received a quote from Signature Plastics for 30 caps @ US$3.36 per cap, plus a $25 fee for the custom legend. So the total comes out to $125.80, or $4.19 per key. This does not include shipping from SP and shipping to you.

If we got the order up to 40 key caps, it knocks about a dollar off each cap.

Note: I need someone to volunteer to complete the order with SP and handle payments and distribution. I cannot do this part!

Thanks everyone for jumping on board with this!

Thanks everyone for jumping on board with this so quickly.

7bit and iMav have graciously allowed us to add the Vim key to the Round 3 group buy (order id: VIM), which solves the payment and distribution problem. The price of the key caps are $3.50 each. The small extra cost goes to PayPal fees and handling by iMav.

7bit tells me you should all be receiving an invoice soon!

We're ordering 50 Vim keys, so there are still a few left if you want to order them!

Is that 3.50 shipped? Also I'm pretty sure it's against paypal tos to charge extra to cover their charges. Also what the heck is the group buy 3 thing, and what do I need to do. JUST TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY.

2.67-3.5 == -.83

Shipping from SP to iMav, taking the key out of a bag labeled "Vim key" and putting it into a bag labeled "NOMiS" and ship it with all the other Round 3 keys should be worth $0.83 per key!

Only from SP to iMav. The rest comes on top of it. The original $2.67 did not include shipping either.

BTW: For such mini-orders, maybe there is a cheaper way to ship instead of the usual $5.25, if you are located in the US.

Wait a minute, it costs 12 dollars to ship two key caps? The original geek hack keys were shipped from germany and cost 10usd total for two keycaps.

The original Geek Hack key ships from US. Don't know how much iMav charges for shipping costs to (I assume) Canada.

As I said, I try to find a cheaper method for such a mini-order, but I don't know if it exist for international shipping.

Do you know how these caps are going to be sent?

I'm thinking, maybe just putting the key into an envelope with some air bubble film and sending it via regular mail will be cheaper, if this is not what iMav is actually going to do.

I got an invoice with $14 shipping cost which is 4 times the cost of the keycap;)

Uhm the original geekhack key was shipped by sixty iirc. Anyway, for those it cost $10 for 2. I just don't want to pay something absurd like $12 to ship these.

Uhh... my name's spelled wrong. You're missing a 'c', that might cause a problem for 7bit if he doesn't catch it.
Thanks, I'll fix it in the OP. Hopefully 7bit has responded to you.

Is that 3.50 shipped? Also I'm pretty sure it's against paypal tos to charge extra to cover their charges. Also what the heck is the group buy 3 thing, and what do I need to do. JUST TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY.
The group buy has four shipping options:
Code: [Select]
    USA       $5.25
     CAN/MEX  $12
     World    $14
     Moon $50,000
Joining with Round 3 is good for some, since they're already paying shipping charges for Round 3, and can get the Vim key caps without an extra shipping charge. If you're not in Round 3 already, then the ship charge seems high. If you can work out a lower-cost option with 7bit and iMav, then that would be best. Otherwise, I would only suggest buying the vim key if you find it a good value for what you're getting.

Ordering through the group buy seems hard, but the basic steps are easy.  Send a PM to 7bit_vote, with any subject, and the following in the body:
Code: [Select]
VIM
EMAIL
Within a day or so, you'll receive an email with payment instructions.  Follow the instructions, making sure to add your order number to the PayPal message, and you'll receive your key caps in a few weeks.  Signature Plastics will produce the keys, send them to iMav, and he'll distribute them to everyone in the group.

I asked 7bit and iMav for help since they have a great process set up for payment and distribution, and that was the final missing piece to making the vim escape key happen. They were super helpful, and my hat's off to both of 'em!  Signature Plastics was cool about it too, and it's not delaying Round 3 at all.

I hope the sudden merging with Round 3 didn't shock people too much. I think it will work out great in the end.

I think this is an excellent idea. If there is another group buy in the future then I'd definitely be interested in participating. However, if you're going to give your keyboard a Vim theme then I think it makes more sense to produced a full set of Vim keys. For example, the HJKL keys could be made in matching green and have direction arrow symbols on them.

Yeah!  Color-coordinating groups of related hotkeys could be cool: F, T, comma, and semicolon; X, Y, and P; D, C, W, and E; 0 and 4; slash, asterisk, and question mark.  Maybe blanks in place of E, M, A, C, and S? :D

Could include "Vim Apprentice" pack with arrow keys replaced by appropriate variants of:

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 22200[/ATTACH]

I imagine most people with the vim key from Round 3 have it in place of ESC, but I think it would be good in the F1 spot, allowing for bright, matching I, ESC, and colon keys.  Maybe F2-F12 could be replaced with "V I - I M P R O V E D".

That last idea is probably terrible.

I would like to have a standard color layout with additional upfront ninja style labels with the main function of that key.
Something like "Record", "Word", "End", "Replace", etc.
Or a second label color like the APL Model M would work.

This could be done for BS asking Unicomp a custom set.

Note that WASDkeyboards clarified he can only do etching (engraving) no colored fonts. The only color choice available is the keycap itself. Any letters or symbols will be engraved. I think lately he was saying he can also do the front face of keys for an extra charge, so I guess this allows up to 3 labels on each keycap.

by the way i use the cpas lock as an esc key for vil, does anyone do the same?
