[IC] SA Espresso - GB is live! Ending May 14th

SA Espresso

A keycap set inspired by the rich colors of an espresso, from the dark brown of coffee beans to the caramel-like layer of crema that rises to the top of a perfect shot.

April 13th - May 14th 2021

Kits

Renders

J-02 by Proto[Typist] Keyboards

Haus by Hand Engineering

Black Haus for the render.

GMMK PRO case. Model by Elmo, design by GPCGR.

Colors

Consider this image just a reference, as viewing the HEX on a screen is not accurate. I think these colors will work great, but I do have alternatives that are less/more saturated or a slightly different hue, in case the samples turn out a bit off and to make sure the subtle gradient is respected.

Deskmat

Collaborations

THOK x SA Espresso

RocketCables x SA Espresso

To-Do
  • Finish color matching
  • Collaborations
  • Get in contact with vendors
  • Make more renders
  • Modify the set / add more options based on feedback
  • Possible novelties and deskmats

Huge thanks to the Keycap Designers discord and r/keycapdesigners for all the great feedback. This is my first set, so all the help was crucial.
Special thanks to thatkoaladoe, shota_irl, NoPunIn10Did and Swishy, and also to konstantin for the very detailed advice on the kits.

Updates
  • 8/23/2020 - Moved the alphas out of base and ortho kits. Improved compatibility for many layouts, added NorDe and Ergo kits.
  • 9/16/2020 - Added novelties, deskmat and vendors. Updated kits to improve support and reduce unnecessary keys.
  • 3/11/2021 - Added GB date, pricing, collaborations and colors.

I like this a lot! I do have a few suggestions though:

  • Add a novelties kit (I'm sure you already are working on this)
  • Consider adding a few cream-colored keys as accents either into the base kit or novelties
  • Consider icon mods, they help it look less generic. Bonus points if you design them yourself!
  • Consider a custom font, not sure how easy this is for SA but if it's possible it'd give it a ton more personality
  • I would personally tone down the orange just a bit.  It feels too saturated to me.
  • I'd also prefer a profile other than SA, but you should do what you want!

For deskmats I'd love a simple "coffee liquid" plain design that looks like you're "underwater" in coffee. Think something like GMK Grape Soda's mats but with a bit more elegance to it... Just an idea!

I love this, I would also love DSA profile over the SA but it doesn't matter that much really.

I'm a big fan of this. SA Chocolatier is my all time favourite SA set and this compliments it nicely. I think since you've already added the 1.75u Shift to the base you should also add the R4 Fn key to make it compatible with 65% boards, otherwise theres almost no point having the short shift at all as you'd still be missing a key, adding one key to base will get alot more buyers than removing the short dhift and putting in the non standard imo.

While I commented on the Reddit thread that this was similar to SA Chocolatier I am thinking more and more that this stands out enough with the gradient alphas. And generally, while I’m not a gradient fan, this is really well done.

My suggestion would be to split the alphas out of the ortho and tkl kits. This has the potential to allow for a higher alphas MOQ and therefore lower prices and more flexibility.

Hey everyone, huge thanks for all the support on the first days of the interest check!
I got lots of feedback, and after going through it I decided to take the advice of cijanzen, and split the alphas out of the base and ortho kit, looking at sets like SA Skyriter and SA Godspeed as reference. This should make the set more flexible and give you support for many layouts. I also improved Ortho and 40s support, and added NorDe and Ergo kits.

Also received lots of ideas for novelties and deskmats, will start to work on that.
Hopefully you will like these changes. Be sure to let me know in the new form if you're interested: https://forms.gle/UnisnB8cs5cxnAcx8

still lots of work to do.

what is your rough ETA to a GB? 2021?

I want to spend a few months improving what I have and adding more stuff, so 2021 seems likely. Nothing certain tho.

Good luck man. I've decided I wanted to throw money at this set when it's ready.
