About
Heavily inspired (and assumed) by the Sinclair ZX Spectrum (https://i.imgur.com/EUXV99U.jpg) from 1982, this set aims to have an 80s aesthetic with double colored legends, which is kinda unique and innovative IMO.
This is possible using the all-over dye-sub technique. The manufacturer from the KAT profile (Keyreative) told me they are able to do that, and since I wanted to keep a uniform profile to fit the look of vintage Sinclair keyboards, I thought it would be nice to use KAM profile (https://www.zfrontier.com/post/detail/7214).

Gotcha. Technically R2, but I see what you mean. Looks extremely close to DSA, but taller and much thicker. I bet they will sound nice :)

'Caps Lock' legend changed to 'Extend Mode' (in reference to ZX Spectrum + (https://r.mprd.se/fup/up/96373-ZX_Spectrum-1.jpg), thanks for the suggestion) which avoids confusion between 'caps shift' and 'caps lock'.

I own a KAT set and I have to say that it's really pleasant to use. It's thick and smooth, not too tall (compared to SA)…

Ah you're right. I was saying that because I don't see the arrows on the OG keyboard but when I look again they're printed on the case instead on the keycaps, my bad.

I agree with that opinion. I mean, it doesn’t look bad, but it’s just too different, and not in the theme anymore.
Beautiful set! The more I look at the renders the more I like it. Not crazy about the mono alphas as I think the charm of this set lies in the legends. Undecided on the light alphas. Although they do look interesting I think there's enough going on with this set that I'd stick with dark gray alphas.
Either way hope this happens, most def in for a set.

This will depend on the quality of the samples. Legends have to be sharp, clean and centered. I don’t wanna hurry and launch a GB with an unperfect product :)

This will depend on the quality of the samples. Legends have to be sharp, clean and centered. I don’t wanna hurry and launch a GB with an unperfect product :)
Agreed, definitely don't want it to be rushed! I'm just confirming that it won't happen in October, so that sounds good.

that effectively ruins the coolness of this set imo. also the whole purpose of the set. but it was shown what it would look like over at keebtalk im pretty sure.

There was a DSA Poseidon during the Massdrop keycap competition. Creator had a Vietnamese name.

The Norde kit is awesome. But, it should include the therthiary legends to be really useful. 7 and 0 are missing the curly brackets, 8 and 9 are missing the square brackets, the + is missing the \ and so on. Also, I did not find a proper key for the ´` acute and grave accents, the ¨~^ dead key is not properly legended, 2, 3 and 4 are missing their currency symbols. A VIM arrow set in base color will be dope, also. Just my two cents.

Not a huge fan of the “progressive” shine Most GMK sets get with light use but FULL Uniform shine is gorgeous and really adds to the Vintage vibe.
Seems like others don’t feel the same :(
I’ll definitely be looking into KAM if this is their standard tooling though :cool:

I would prefer matte tbh. Though KAT R2 isn't exactly the same shape as KAM.

Thanks Loligagger, I hadn't noticed the difference between KAT R2 and KAM before. This overlay shows the detail. It's also strange that KAT row numbering is opposite common nomenclature.

Have you tried ADA profile? I’m curious how it feels compared to DSA and XDA.
I don’t think ADA is (Mass)Drop’s proprietary profile, and I don’t think double-shot ADA tooling exists yet. Does anyone know for sure?

I haven't tried the ADA profile, but just based on the pictures it looks like it's not too shiny, it's double-shot ABS, it's retro-styled, and uniform profile, which seemed like a good match. Wraith is not one of these. Still, i love my glossy SA Honeywell, i wouldnt mind a similar set in KAM.. and i am certain that other colorways will look really good with that finish. Also that all over dye sub process gives really good results in terms of color saturation (that blue is interesting..)

Planck with pink kailh: meh. Anything standard staggered (full size mx clears, 68 with burn oranges) really meh (could not of course try fully but everything 1u). Chimera ergo with MOD-M tactile: so, so. But dactyl manuform (Outemu Skies v2.2 no led opening so less wobble) was very pleasant. I suppose for me they need tenting. Building corne now, plan to try them on T1s.G20 would also be some kind of option. The legends are super sharp and the surface of the keycap feels great.

Lol. Ok I feel that. I bought 4 kits of Dots so I could make a white version of GMK Dots. I almost did the same with fruits, but I figured I was getting ahead of myself. I’ll grab the kits when they come around as my order already topped like 300$ for milkshake. It(his milkshake) brought me to the yard. And then it twerked on me I guess you could say.

The Norde kit is awesome. But, it should include the therthiary legends to be really useful. 7 and 0 are missing the curly brackets, 8 and 9 are missing the square brackets, the + is missing the \ and so on. Also, I did not find a proper key for the ´` acute and grave accents, the ¨~^ dead key is not properly legended, 2, 3 and 4 are missing their currency symbols. A VIM arrow set in base color will be dope, also. Just my two cents.

Did you have time to look into that? If tertiary legends on NordeUk would be possible, that would be amazing. It may be a few extra keys, but I think its totally worth it.

I'm surprised this got reshuffled so aggressively into big kits rather than the usual pick-and-choose format... Why is that? I thought MOQs are not an issue. After many massive GMK base kits I was looking forward to small specialized kits... A bit disappointed to be frank.
Anyway, I'd personally prefer if you kept 40% in the base - I was going to get 60/65% support anyway and this would mean I only need one kit. Ortho seems to be included in base too. OTOH, if you do end up moving 40%/ortho to ergo, I might just get that and save a bit of money.
I see the rainbow stripe on the 2u spacebar didn't work out in the end, that's a pity. I guess that's because it's also for other boards, where it would not work very well, not just for ortho (where it would fit beautifully).

Also on the 1.25u and 1.5u MAG. TRUE VIDEO keys you can spell out MAGENTA, there's enough space I think.
I'm definitely interested, I think I'll get the base kit, also interested in the extension kit if the rainbow stripes and the extra coloured keys turn out great in the samples. Though personally, I think I would love it if there were spacebars (6.25 and 7) without rainbow, but with "break space". at least I'd like to see what that would look like, in a render or something. maybe that could be the spacebars in the regular base kit? or do you want them to be blank?

Cool! It's lacking a homing kit now but that's fine, with how it messes up the sublegends I guess this set won't be super popular with alternative layouts despite being uniform profile and I will just use the included non-homing keys and scramble the alphas :P
Colemak user here and I figured I’ll just move caps around. I’ve accepted that getting accurate subs for an alternate layout is a lot to ask, especially on a uniform profile. But if I’m being honest, I wouldn’t mind a homing set of HUNT to at least give us homing keys for several layouts (Colemak, Dvorak, Workman etc).

Sorry to keep nitpicking, but what I mean is the eight 1.5u keys that were in the earlier ergo kit should all have generic or novelty legends. That way it's compatible with all layouts without needing to add extra 1.5u keys.

Those legends would have to be placed on top-right and this is the current location of the original functions of the ZX Spectrum, resulting in a potential visual conflict IMO.

Well that would work for me, but it would be selfish - the 2x 1u keys are needed for grid layout and split ortho boards. Perhaps move those keys to the Spacebar kit?
Or just keep the kits as they are now. For me the WHITE/YELLOW keys with up/down arrows are good for lower/raise.

In fact, I don't understand why there must be a 1:1 relation between "real" legends like control and their "translation" in this keyset, meaning there are 2 peek/out keys of each size that stand for the control keys. Does including duplicates somehow make the production cheaper?
I think the current solution is very not-fish-not-meat, where you're clearly trying to put as many accurate legends in their correct positions which I think is good, but where you're also doing stuff like defining peek as the accurate legend for control which I find a bit arbitrary. The reason I don't like it is because it results in this out/in, in/something/out pattern. I think legends that, on a modern keyboard, don't mean anything shouldn't be repeated.
I think a good solution would be to instead introduce all the modern bottom row legends as the top legend, so that a set of 1.25u bottom row mods would read something like control/code/alt/break space/alt graph./code/control, and to then use more non-repeated special sublegends for the red text below that.
Sorry for writing so much critical feedback, but it was stuff I wanted to mention. Hope you consider it!

Definitely not a fan of removing the blanks for explicitly "raise" and "lower" labelled keys. I think the ortho users here shot themselves in the foot a bit, just using some other mod key for raise/lower would have been the far superior choice over making this more expensive for grid users. The magenta/true vid and green/inv vid keys for example would have been perfectly fine choices of keys there, and I don't see the necessity of explicit lower/raise keys when not even ctrl can be found in this set.
I'd rather pay a little more to get everything I want than not be able to get it at all.

I think it would help to keep 40s in base, but put ortho coverage in ergo. That means all sorts of ortho layouts are covered with that one, including boardwalk.

I think it would be really nice to add a right arrow with another color in the extension kit. It’s too bad the right arrow is the only one without an upper legend. With it, it would be possible to have a really good looking arrow cluster / nav cluster !

I do agree ortho fits in better with ergo than base. I'm just saying that it suits me better to have it in the base - if it was in ergo I'd probably have to skip base (or spend $200 instead of $130) which would be a shame.
Of course, ideally there would be separate alphas, mods, 40%, ortho and ergo kits, but that turns out to be quite a bit more expensive per key due to the added labour required (I assume).

Yea I noticed afterwards. The intent was to use the generic legends either from the earlier (https://i.imgur.com/FdHipec.png) ergodox kit or the first one here (https://i.imgur.com/9PnLq81.jpg) for the horizontal 1.5u keys. That way there are only 8 of them but it can cover any layout.
Also, could the two blank keys in the ergo kit become curly brace/square bracket keys?

I think this will be the first time that I'll buy two base kits. I hope that Keyreative will be able to produce all running and soon-to-be-running KAT/KAM GBs without significant delays.
That's tough to predict.
Noone did expect that we will sell 6k KAT Milkshake kits. That's why it's getting delayed.
Keep also in mind that there are final samples approval phase and sometimes adjustment needs to be done :)
I rather deliver a delayed perfect product than something crappy on time :thumb:

I'd love to pick up a shiny kit just for display, but for actual use, I'm looking forward to the matte finish.
Majority of my keycaps are PBT matte (3 out of 4), so I'm interested on how shiny PBT feels like. And yeah i'm interested in uniform, glossy/shiny finish :)
But this one is probably instabuy for me anyway.

I think OP is right. I think everything is pretty much there. I'm actually now considering an ortho75. Which should be doable with the alpha and calc.

Really if you go base over ergo, at least from a boardwalk user perspective, the only thing you miss out on are the vertical 1.5u keys. Sone people use them though and some do all 1us in the middle column. I’m kinda torn. But this might be might be my last GB so might as well buy them all.
