Title: [IC]Volcano660, Gasket Mount Keyboard(Half a year, FINALLY, GB is Live!)
Post by: ilouis_07 on Wed, 17 October 2018, 04:51:53
Good day everyone!

GB link: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=99711.msg2732481#msg2732481

Hi
it's ilouix_07,
Today I am here with an Interest Check for my latest project: The Volcano660.
This IC is a bit different. This is the first time that I am sharing my personal design. A project that I have developed with my team TianYue Lab. This is also the first time that I am working with manufacturers, so I hope you can be patient with me:p

First up, I proudly present to everyone a "weapon" which will immediately be familiar to most in our community members as it's size and layout is mostly derived from the Leopold FC660M/C.

I called the design the Volcano660, V660 or V66 in short. I haven't decided on either one yet. But, I will keep "Volcano" as the name for my line of keyboard designs for it holds a special meaning to me.

Here is a short IC form for you:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some Q&A here for the curious ones:
Q: If you ask why the name Volcano?
A: Volcanoes are very quiet on the exterior and can be very explosive when you dig deep into their cores. This actually pictures the keyboard's characteristics I am aiming to produce perfectly. The plan was to design an outer case with very simplistic styling cues to match the utilitarian concept I have in my mind. Combine the case with a very tight, compact key layout, a solid inner construction and this becomes that "silent beast" I have been sketching.....

Q: Why this design, the 660 layout?
A: None of the bells and whistles like RGB underglow or fanciful styling side cuts on bezel. Because, I strongly believed in that a true custom keyboard should be typed on and to be experienced by the touch first and foremost. Not just to be viewed as beautiful collectibles and left on the shelf and gather dust if I put it bluntly. Also, I have done enough of 60% already and wanted to progress gradually to other larger layouts.
So you can say the keyboard I've designed looks like a fully programmable FC660 cased in an aluminum outer shell. But,I will tell you it's not the same in every single angle the way I viewed it. Down to even the top surface and the bottom, I think I should let everyone find that little surprise in the pictures I am going to leak.

Q: What do you actually want to set out to achieve with this kit?
A: With all those ideas I've saved up until now, I set out to design the V66/660 with a single goal in mind and that is offer it with the best in all aspects of a premium custom kit. Give it a solid CNC milled case with the finer anodizing treatments I can find, offer every kit in the best conditions that I can possibly.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believed everything has to do with how keyboards are constructed internally. With that said, I have only seen such mounting methods ever used on a few premiums and also only on the more costly custom kits made in the past....

And if I haven't hinted enough already, then......
A picture paints a thousand words, I will let the images show you what I have been looking to realize.

I cannot stress enough that this will be one of the more interesting/unique kit.
So, let us enjoy the excitement of an Interest Check first before we talk shop with the full specifications later when I launch this very special buy.

Happy typing, Everyone! ;)

Updates:
More
update 1(10th Nov)
Change of PCB:

We hear you! We want to provide everyone with a higher quality keyboard, and have decided on quite a major change to improve the Volcano660. We will now be working with Clueboard for the Volcano’s PCB. It will feature a QMK PCB designed by u/skullydazed @clueboards!

Changes to timeline:

Due to the change of PCB vendor, we will need to make adjustments to / redesign the current case. The new prototype is slated to arrive in 6-7 weeks.

In the meantime…

Colour samples: We are hoping get some anodized colour samples from the factory. These would be to test the accuracy of anodizing of colours and are not the finalised colours of the Volcano660.

We might ask them to give us samples of these colours:
Will keep everyone posted after receiving samples of the anodizing.

To Do List:
More
0. Determine the anodizing colors for GB.(05 Nov)
1. PCB compatible with alps switch.
2. Plate for alps switch.
3. Prototype.
4. Assemble it, video for typing sound.
5. if everything is ready, let's make this GB happen.

what i have done?
More
1. Finish the final design with my team.(27/Oct)
2. Paid prototype fee, prototype may take 2 weeks starting from the end of Oct.
3. 30th/Oct, proto payment refunded from factory, proto price increased:(
4. Render Finished.(30th Oct)
5. New factory found for prototyping.(31th OCt)
6. Factory cant provide estimated prototyping time, so prototyping cancelled again:(3th Nov)
7. Prototype factory confirmed, est time for prototype arrive my side is about mid of Dec.(5th Nov)

I'd be in for one!

The option of the BT pcb sounds pretty cool, so that'd be my vote.

This is amazing (been following this project on Instagram). Would you consider adding ISO support. It doesn't need to be on the main plate (I can totally understand why people don't want that), I would pay extra for the separate plate.

Really looking forward to this!

Thanks buddy, i will count ISO plate in for sure, but i won't do universal plate(for enter key). So it will be separate ISO plate and standard plate:)

I liked the idea of the concealed bottom weight, some of the keyboards I owned with weights showing on the bottoms sounds hollow without insulation foam in them.

Hope it wont stay blank and show some accents of the brass or something.

Also plate material options like pc or copper would be really interesting with a gasket mount. Hope your factory is able to do it :)

have 3 options, haven't decided yet:
1, inside
2, go through the base like "T" shape
3, outside

personally, i prefer 1 or 3.

Actually this mounting system can produce a better bottom sound when you typing, the rubber between plate and case will remove or reduce the unwanted vibrations. Instead of using TOP/Bottom mounting, I believed that this gasket mount can add a compression force on plate when we tight the screws. When user typing on the keyboard, the force will be decomposed to thousands of contact points on rubber stripe(instead of 6-8 screws point for top/bottom mounting system). It’s a tricky problem but I will try my best to make it happens.

i will let IC running 2 weeks and make the final decision for the designs, after that send to factory do prototyping, confirm the color options at that time also. For price, try to control under that amount if possible:)

Yes, I used same dimensions as original FC660m does, so clueboard 660 will be np imo. Also it is good to have another existing PCB solution what if the default PCB broken after many years.

i already asked clueboard for the PCB dimension, definitely will fit their pcb if they provided info. Also i can do QMK pcb as well.

i don't want to make universal iso/ansi enter key plate, so i have done 2 versions.
Last row will be universal for different layout.
Lshift can be:2.25 or 1.25+1 or 1+1.25
Rshift can be: 2.25 or 1.25+1 or 1+1.25 as well.

for alps plate, i am still doing now, will have as well. PCB will support alps also.

Not sure if the IC form was abused initially or something but is really strange that PC has a 40% (unexpected i would say).
To be honest, if that's the only option, i pass. Not going to spend more than alu for "deluxe plastic".

Regarding your concern, full brass should be also PVD and also any brass would be covered to prevent oxidation.

Hopefully, there will be multiple optiona to make the top choices happy with it.

Nothing unexpected about it. Polycarb boards are pretty hyped now a days.

Also having multiple options will be difficult with pricing and stuff. But we can also see what louis will open for us. The more the merrier of course.

@KaosJ, based on what Louis said (I quoted above) and what was on the google form, I'm pretty sure he was just exploring what people might want for a special limited number of boards which he would raffle off (poly or full brass). The main group buy would be normal aluminum versions. I'm sure he'll clarify but I don't think there's any reason for concern :).

Also, I'm hyped for the potential of a poly version!!

correct me if i am wrong. I tot, type c can allow more current flow in to the circuit, but pcb doesn't have rgb underglow. Type C consider more secure and it is reversible(user friendly:P).

Just curious, will there be an option to customise the design on the weight?
you meant engraving some words on it?

Yes, like what Gray Studio had for the COD67 (https://en.zfrontier.com/products/cod67csec).

i have been thinking about it also. But so far i haven't decided prototyping factory yet. Need more time to answer this Question but i will try for sure:)

I have to give you props man.  From a design perspective you've nailed most every aspect in designing this case, the plate, the weight, the profile, keycap setting, I am very interested in your review of the prototype.  Judging based on the number of views on this IC, you'll have no issue with selling.  Good luck on the prototype!

Will you be stocking extra pcbs?

Having the type c port on the case makes it proprietary to the certain pcb you're using as no others are using type c

I'm really interested in this. I don't have anything in this layout and I'm super curious about gasket mount designs so I hope you're able to offer it in some nice fun pastel colors!
I'll be sad if it only comes in colors like black, red, and silver.

To be honest there are other type-c 65%.
Surely that's just a plus over the dinosaurs still using mini-usb in 2018 ;D

This isn't a 65% layout . The only 66% pcb that is readily available is the clueboard and that does not use usb c. It looks like the new clueboard low profile pcb is usb c but that one is also hotswap. I don't know if skully plans on releasing a non-hotswap with usb c anytime. Louis, I would honestly prefer the volcano remain compatible with the clueboard pcb. I don't have the most confidence in Percent's pcbs after what happened with the Canoe. I know there are some others who feel the same way but I don't know if that is the a lot of people. Maybe do another google form for usb c vs clueboard pcb compatibility? Lol.

I don't know ...obviously it's your decision. I'm just offering my opinion. By the way, thank you for being so responsive with your IC. You're doing a great job :thumb:.

IKR i think answering this while watching the Space65 mixed my thoughts :D

I agree about the percent part. I doubt it will happen again but why taking the risk. Better avoid unless we are talking about that sweet clear pcb, in that case i would take the risk.

The only thing that is on priority to me regarding the pcb is TYPE-C and QMK. Nothing else. I wouldn't buy any bootmapper pcb, probably same logic for the connector unless the design is really outstanding and blowing my mind.

I have the same opinion about Percent. The MAO Canoe I got had pcb issues (luckily I was able to fix it), and the quality of the finish is nothing compared to the China MAO version. I got the impression that they really don’t care about quality for int’l buyers as we won’t be able to chase them for issues.

That said, I’m avoiding Percent products like the plague, and honestly, will be a dealbreaker for me if they would be the pcb provider.

Actually they did all the free replacement when the pcb has problem (in new condition) in china domestic. But for international gb, i am not sure what is going on but sorry to heard that bro:(, PCB is the core for a keyboard and I'll give you a satisfactory answer in the end :)

Hi, it will be open slots for default kit(alum body+brass plate and brass weight) and raffles for PC/Fully brass kits.

But since OP doesn't agree, we probably won't be seeing it(at least in this version).

Glad to hear that, means we will still be seeing some future iterations of the Volcano.😁

Also, saw the update regarding the cost. Hopefully the new PCB will not push the price point past the Koyu, as (IMHO) I felt that one of the main attractions of this keyboard was its relatively affordable price.

Wait I'm confused, does this mean the "open slots" stated mean that they're only 50 boards going to be made or that 50 boards will need to be bought to start making the rest?

The subtle curve shouldn't make a difference. But I get OP's idea, it will be something like model M keyboards. Not sure how that will feel like to type on, but I think many people like the curve on the model M.

One thing to note, hopefully the curve is not too aggressive, as that will expose the switch if Cherry Profile keycaps are used. IMHO, a high profile case is preferred where the switches are concealed. Looks cleaner.😎

I totally agree. I think it will be more of a stand out if it had a subtle curve, too many keyboards are a basic wedge which isn't necessarily a bad thing but if he's dabbling with introducing a curve I say go for it!

Looks cleaner.😎
inspired curve top from HHKB and it won't be aggressive, we make sure that it won't expose the switch(with cherry keycap) from side angle.

I would look perfect if you could match it up with the minimal curve the HHKB has. Would give it a more unique visual compared to the keyboards on the market right now. NGL, I didn't really notice that the HHKB had that very subtle curve, great idea!

It is very subtle though, I'll attach a picture to show you - and if the V66 ends up having the same curve it wouldn't be any issues tbh.

Hey! Since clueboard is my partner, so i just using clueboard 66% pcb to show all the compatible layouts.

(Reference Link:https://clueboard.co/parts/clueboard-66-pcb-25, and thanks skully for the great layouts provided)

I think the gasket stands out with linears, not sure about tactiles. Could have a great effect to it but I can't speak on gasket's behalf.

I would actually argue the opposite, conventional wisdom is that plates with more flex are better for tactile (like acrylic, fr4) while stiffer plates are better for linear (aluminum, brass, SS). This is because a bit of flex compliments the feeling of a tactile switch, whereas linears feel the most 'clean' when on a nice solid plate.

Since gasket mount introduces another level of flex/bounce (for lack of better words), conventional wisdom would probably side with tactiles working better on gasket mount.

But keep in mind that none of the above is universally relevant, and is always very subjective. For example, if you love to bottom out your switches, you don't want a SS plate because its way too rigid and will just hurt your fingers- therefore a bit of flex introduced by the gasket mounting could be welcome. But if you type lightly and never bottom out, you might want a more solid build.

And everything above this line is pretty much BS cause you like what you like. Try everything

That last line pretty much sums it up. This entire hobby is about personal preference so everything is subjective.

Ugh I love this. It's like a Norbafoce but for a MX 66% which is the superior layout IMO. can't wait to pick one of these up. Just not sure on what color yet.

I have heard that a white finish is fairly tough to achieve.

Hey Louis, what you mean for universal ANSI? Ansi+all the layouts compatible?
If so the only difference between the 2 is the enter and shift, wouldn't be better to make a total standard ANSI (so not even 1 extra hole, aka the perfect plate) + A full universal (including ISO and all the layouts).

Hi, you can refer to reply #89, i updated 2 layout pics.
of course more holes means more space for noise to travel, but this last row IMO looks ok:)

It is personal feeling, I tried some hot swap keyboards, not bad but can’t compare to good assembled keyboard TBH.
Hot swap has advantages like: ez for user to assembled, ez to change the switch and etc.
Disadvantages: it’s fixed layout, pcb need to be fixed and etc.

Every kailh hotswap board I've built has had to be completely reworked. I prefer soldering, it's the same amount of work anyway since through-hole is easier to solder than surface.

I am interested in gasket mount 'keeb' !   It would be great to have case without those three LEDs.   I think this case looks better without LEDs.

Is this high profile case?   I wonder whether switches are visible or not.

It's high profile, have a look at the second pic in the original post.
I think the LEDs are nice, differentiates it from the Heavy-6 and original FC660M/C. Perhaps the placement could be different, but I'm not sure where else they would go (save for between the ins/delete cluster and the right arrow).

the radius of the curve will be 1150 mm. It is quite subtle imo:)

I just got an FC660C and I love the layout plus I am always looking for the best sound in a board. I think this gasket mount will be the interesting. Is there any chance for a more lava red. I would imagin a deeper almost dark/black red. What type of switches would you think would work best with a gasket mounted pcb?

The plate is still going to matter a lot for sound even with gasket. If you like high-pitched, brass is good, if you like more original switch sound, carbon fiber or pc is better.

It just seems ideal to me for when you don't have an F row. Otherwise you need to put the `~ or |\ key somewhere strange.

It'll mess you up for a day or so, but once you get used to not having to reach out for that backspace, it becomes so natural. I may be a bit biased as someone who uses `~ every day, all day, but I can't go back to standard ANSI anymore. It just seems inefficient.

On that note, you should do hotswap split-backspace on your new board with Millmax in that section :)

How does split backspace not require reaching out? Regular backspace is one row up, but a bit closer - if you draw a circle from homing key "J" it becomes clearly visible. Also regular backspace is easier to hit because it's bigger and located in the corner, so you don't have to be so precise.

I'm not bashing split backspace, but I fail to see the "obvious" benefits.

Yeah, usage pattern might play a big role here - I use `~ maybe once per day on the average, so I don't care about it being on another layer.

I'm assuming @voxkey does the same, but personally, split backspace allows me to shift backspace DOWN one row (taking the place of "\|").  In place of what was once a 2U backspace key, I have "|\" and "Insert" (others do ~, etc..).

Completely concur with @voxkey's assessment, by the way.  Using normal ANSI backspace position feels very strange (more difficult) for me now and it didn't take longer than a day or two to get used to it being one row lower.

The only downside is that you _have_ to buy cap sets in the $100+ range if you want the correct legends (1.5U backspace, in particular).

If you have a programmable board, I'd encourage you to try it out.

Distance-wise, you are absolutely correct, but your hand still has to rotate to get up to that top row which is what makes it harder to reach.

I can also see a larger key being better for less precise typists.
