Duck Custom Keyboard kits - centralized discussion

Please let me know if I've missed anything relevant.  This is work-in-progress.
I was going to link representative photographs for each kit from duck's site, but it appears he changed image hosting format on his website, so one can't easily get image URLs from it anymore.  Instead, his site with all the photos is linked at the bottom of the OP.

Sort of... could go either way.  It's technically about keyboards, and I thought it goes here better.  This subforum has a lot of threads with information on various existing keyboards, including customs.  Making Things Together ("discussion of small-scale design, manufacturing and modification") is more about design and manufacturing process and information threads on making new things, basics of soldering, firmware design, etc.

Is there a way to add a "currently available" section to it or so? Seeing a lot of things I would buy but also a lot that were limited group buy etc.

This is not an ad for buying Duck boards - this is an information thread about Duck boards.  So unfortunately no.  Keep an eye on the Interest Checks and Group Buys subforums.

Is anyone else bummed that Duck doesn't seem to offer the lower angled acrylic bottoms on the more recent releases?  I was excited for the Lightsaver V3, thinking that with the two piece design there would be an angled acrylic option, like with the Orion V2 or Octagon V2 boards.   Ah well.  Saves me the stress of trying to get in on the next buy.  :)

I was worried about the high angle with my Lightsaver V1, but it turned out to not be a big deal.  The front was quite low, compared to some custom cases (not sure if it's as low for V3).  All in all, it was a comfortable keyboard to type on (and normally I'd prefer a shallower angle).

No idea, but you might want to check with xauser:

Wait, it is possible to use TMK/QMK firmware with Duck's board? I'm getting in a Viper V2.

It was with the Lightsaver.  Don't know what controllers other Duck boards use.  Also someone needs to write that code.  xauser did for Lightsaver V1.  I see Octagon V1 listed here, also by xauser:

Sounds good - I think duck uses the same controller for all his boards (at least it was the same for the octagons too). I'll take a look at the viper when I get it, seems to be a fun next project to work on.

Duck Mini v2

Duck Lightpad

Duck Eagle/Viper v1

Duck Orion v2

I'll see if I can't take a better one. Photography isn't a hobby of mine. ^^; The window is made out of polycarbonate I cut myself, but it's a tinted poly that's dark so that might further that impression.

It might also be worth mentioning that an Alps plate/PCB was an option for the Orion v2 GB. 7 were sold in total, but it was still there.

Is it possible to buy acrylic side inserts for the v1 lightsaver? Or do I need to find someone who has some and buy them off of them?

I don't believe we got any official side inserts for Lightsaver V1.  Your best bet is to look for measurements and have them made yourself or else buy from someone else who already has a set.  I had a set with my V1, and they don't connect to the keyboard in any way--you have to use double-sided tape to have them attached to the keyboard or just remember to always move the inserts first if you want to move the keyboard on your desk.  It was slightly annoying in that regard.

I did find this thread about inserts for V2:
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79069.0

Not sure if the side cut-out dimensions are the same for V1 and V2.

I wrote a guide in the Orion V2 thread about frosting the acrylic for the best effect.
Probably even linked to the laser cutting dimensions for the different models.

Check the OP of your model for a link. Having it lasercut is not that expensive.

So you're talking about parts for Orion V1, right?  It's not clear whether the side cut-outs are the same between different versions and different designs.

Sorry, I was on my phone and couldn't find it straight away.

There are differences. I believe the side inserts were at first available in Original Lightsaver v1 (which also worked for the lightpad iirc) and the Orion v1. Those were slightly different.

Edit: That's the link to the inserts themselves.
This is the guide that I was talking about.

I found that keeping the inserts level with the table surface, rather than pushing them up to fit the curve of the cut out in the case, made for a more even triangular line light diffusion. I kept the inner side protective plastic liner on each insert, which helped with diffusion.  That did mean that the inserts were sitting slightly below the case.

You're probably right. But I also move my case from time to time. Perhaps I'll try frosting the 'edges' and leave the visible sides clear next time.

Anybody knows when Duck will drop another GB for the 65% or 70% keyboards? Eagerly waiting for another drop. :-[ :-[

Necro'ing this to ask: anyone know what material the "plastic plate" offered in the original Orion V2 buy is made of? Polycarb? Acrylic? FR-4?

Does Duck ever release his plate files?  I’m interested in getting a plate made for the TC-v3

Looking for some help from the community...
Flashed newly received Duck Octagon v3 PCB (pcb ver 2.0) via QMK.
Everything is fine with layers except media keys (vol+, vol-, mute)... they are not working at all. Does anyone had such problem? (already tried to flash 2 pcbs - same issue)

Question: how does one emulate meta (shift ctrl alt combo) as well as lca (left control alt) in O2D software?

Is it possible to trigger meta or lca key with a single button in that software? like to be able to press one button + A (as an example) and get shift, control, alt+A?

EDIT: also, do not see options to map F13-F24 onto keys in O2D?

after fiddling with o2d I resolved the LED issues. For meta/ hyper/ etc those type of things have to be controlled from the qmk programmed numpad. 237256-0

Not sure if I bricked my pcb for the octagon v3, but the right arrow, the key beside it and the other key beside f12 (on R1) does not seem to be working despite other keys working fine. Have I mucked it up? :<
