Would you please periodically update us about the MOQ progress? I really want these switches.

hope to be the 2nd to be shipped as well!! hehe :thumb:
We are at 57.25% of MOQ although I haven't had an update from NovelKeys today yet.Great, thanks for sharing.

No problem, I'll try and keep this updated roughly every 10% :D
I'll order a pack or two when I get paid. Need a ton of these lol

Make sure you don't forget, I doubt you'll see these kind of prices again :D

Yes it will.
I keep telling myself I'm not spending any more money on keyboard stuff, but I'm interested. I may get in on this.
38,160 switches ordered of 48,000 MOQ! That is 79.5% of MOQ. Novelkeys and I will be buying 40 packs each making a total of 99.5% of MOQ, 2 more packs sold and MOQ is met!

GB will still go until the 16th or will it end when MOQ is met?

Aw ****, just paid almost double the price on a load of these (albeit plate mount), and it's a UK gb as well for once. Well, bollocks. GLWS though! Seriously great price.

Such a great price it would be worth buying some for your next project? ;)

I bought enough for three boards! I am still tempted though... Will see how my funds are nearer the deadline.
Dear OP, can you please post some more pictures of yours switch openers?

Don't miss out on this, it's probably the cheapest that you will ever see Cherry MX Silent Black switches. :D

*sigh* dang it. I ordered two packs.
I ordered an extra plate and PCB for the Moon keyboard, so my excuse is I'll use gat greens on one and mx silent blacks on the other.
I've ordered two more packs for myself. Is it possible to merge the orders so to ship them out together?
Order numbers are 230 and 319.
Thanks.

wake me up when 96k switches were bought! :p
Just qurious, if I ordered switch top remover tools along side the switches, will they be shipped together once the switches arrive? I just assumed this was the case when I ordered.
What if we don't meet the 96.000 MOQ? Every order after the 48.000 MOQ gets cancelled?
I'll be doing everything I can to make this reach 96,000 including funding as many extras as I can on top of the 10k I already will be.31,320 are 261 packs. That should be doable.

Hello everyone!
First of all, apologies for the wall of text, but it is worth a read.
Unfortunately I have a bit of bad news. I have been informed by the distributor that the lead time for these switches is now **16** weeks instead of the 12 weeks before. This isn't really something that could have been foreseen this now puts the expected shipping date at 6th-13th December 2017. Yikes! I know to some or perhaps many of you this news will be disappointing, if there is anything I can do I would do it right away. Maybe we'll be lucky and in a weeks time when the GB closes the lead time will have shrunk, but I won't be getting my hopes up based on that.
The second part of this update is about the MOQ, which as you all know was 48,000 switches which we have surpassed by quite a bit. we are currently at 64,680 switches ordered, which is fantastic! However I made the mistake of assuming that I could order in smaller intervals over 48,000. The actual truth is that I can only order in intervals of 48,000, meaning we need a further 31,320 switches to be ordered to make MOQ, this also means that we cannot sell more than 96,000 switches as I don't think we have time to go to the next point of 144,000 switches. I have also had confirmation that there is no price drop at 96,000 switches, we'd need 5 times MOQ to even potentially have a price drop.
There are a few hours over a week left of the Group Buy, I suggest you order ASAP to definitely be in the Group Buy. The Group Buy will close when 96,000 switches are met if this is before August 16th 23:59 GMT.
If you have any questions let me know.
Cheers,
George
Any way I can merge the order without incurring additional shipping charges? My orders were merged and I was then refunded the shipping fee for the latter.
I'm happy to order another set from Novelkeys. Any way I can merge the order without incurring additional shipping charges?

If you get in touch with Mike at NovelKeys I'm sure he could sort this out for you :)
What happens if the second MOQ point isn't reached?
What if we don't meet the 96.000 MOQ? Every order after the 48.000 MOQ gets cancelled?
That would be an absolute last resort and worst case scenario. I'll be doing everything I can to make this reach 96,000 including funding as many extras as I can on top of the 10k I already will be.
Make the first group but start immediately, canceling all invoices after the first MOQ, which probably includes mine, and restart a second GB in September. That's my advice.

Why cancel? Just split into two GBs and and if people in the second GB want to cancel then let them. Personally, I'd just as soon wait it out if my orders are in the second group of 48K.
How far are we from the 96.000 MOQ by the way?
Just to let everyone know that Mike @ NovelKeys and I have came to the decision that this GB will succeed no matter what. I will be purchasing at least 10,000 and Mike has pledged to pick up whatever else is needed to meet the 96,000 that we need. You gentlemen are great.
I keep forgetting to place an order :-X

Hello there Mr. VicareyG, will/can/are you going to do a GB for the RGB version? :D

Once this GB finishes I will put it to a vote for what Cherry Switch to run a GB for next. Since I am getting these straight from a Cherry Distributor there would be another MOQ of 48,000 switches and this time it will also be a maximum. The RGB variant are also more expensive.

Oh my goodness. I hope Retooled PCB Mount MX Blacks win. I'd shed a tear.
alright you crazy people, I ordered some
just ordered some. it's gonna be interesting to try these silent switches. and a european groupbuy :thumb:
Any info on the quantity? Have we reached 96k MOQ?

Ok, that I read but still interested in how much we, the customers, have bought. It'd be nice to hear up-to-date info because it'll still be 4 months in production after MOQ is met.
Wish I had seen this sooner, trying to sort silent reds and this would be the next best thing.
I saw you guys ended up buying some extras for NK in the US? If so, any way I could get my grubby little hands on a pack?
are we going to received this before Christmas?
Can I still join the GB? I really forgot ordering this.....I think there would be extras, but if not, depending on where you're located, I could get a pack to you at cost + shipping once they come out.
Well if you compare your Location to mine, we're literally days apart.
Weirdly enough, I still can "Add to Cart" from the website -> https://opticboards.com/group-buys/mx-silent-black
But feel free to PM me to if you still want to process my request. I want 2 packs of these switches. Thank you
so what if people start cancelling their orders or not paying the VAT now? wouldn't be better to restart de GB again?
So I've ordered three more packs for myself and 5 VAT packs for the ones I had already purchased. Please confirm that should cover all the VAT for the eight total packs I got.
Also, would you please merge my orders together?
230 and 319 were already merged and my new order number is 409.
Thank you.
Just paid VAT for #00252 order number for the VAT thingy is #00430.
I also realized that something ****ed up my address in the first order (leaving out the house number, LUL), the billing address on the VAT order is the correct address, or just add a note that the house number is 22 on your side or whatever works :thumb:
Paid for both my packs because what's 8 quid in the grand scheme of things. I hope this doesn't bellyflop entirely, and the buy can resume somewhat speedily.
VAT order is #00473, original 2 packs were #00243
Small thought: in the perhaps somewhat unlikely event that there will be a lot of refunds, like a truly massive amount, have you considered the possibility of scaling the buy down to the original 48000?
Edit: Depending on how I have interpreted things, this may or may not be a very dumb question. Let it be known I am at least aware it may be. :blank:
Did you not have to pay VAT in your previous group buys or does it depend on country of origin for the product?

It is a possibility, it is also a very complicated task to figure out who are in the original 48,000
So the missing VAT is for U.S. customers I presume?
Edit: Nvm, seems I misunderstood from the clumsy writing
Thank you for clarifying that NovelKeys customers are not affected. I was just about to askSo the missing VAT is for U.S. customers I presume?
Edit: Nvm, seems I misunderstood from the clumsy writing
Clumsy writing indeed.
I'll give it another shot.
I under priced the switches. I thought they would cost me £26 per 120, but in reality they cost £30 per 120. Due to this huge pricing error I can't afford to buy the 96,000 switches because I am £3,500 short of the invoice total from my supplier. The reason for this is that I didn't account for the VAT that I would be charged. The added £4 is not VAT to be paid by my customers it is just to make up the difference due to my pricing error. This only affects those who bought through Optic Boards not customers of NovelKeys.
Does that explain this in a clearer way?
VAT paid good sir! :thumb:
Well, that's too bad... 3.5k is a lot money. Hopefully everybody reads the message and pays quickly. I paid just now.
I didn't mention my GB order number though, is that a problem?
Good luck with getting this issue fixed but it's almost thocking 100k of switches so I truly believe even the smallest issue is quite cumbersome.
How about those of us that ordered through Novelkeys? Should we also pay for the VAT on Opticboards?
Even though we didn't buy any I've just paid for 5 x VAT charges to help.
Damn, didn't saw the email and just found out about it while browsing gh. Just paid for my two packs, do you need the numbers or do you figure it out yourself? :D
So is it an honor system? Whats going to happen to all the orders that don't pay the VAT?If it's a honour system everyone is getting their orders, regardless of VAT.

That's the spirit entirely. I won't chastise anyone for the fact that I made a mistake. Every contribution is appreciated!
Now for the good news!
The order has been paid in full!
I have sent payment to the supplier yesterday. The order has now been action'd by the supplier meaning that they will submit the order to Cherry and Cherry will start manufacturing the switches. Once Cherry confirms this I will get an accurate delivery estimate. As of right now the delivery estimate is still 16 weeks. Roughly January 10th 2018. This has taken a lot longer than I would have liked and I really appreciate how kind and forgiving the community have been about this mistake. Thank you all for being awesome! I hope to make it up to all of you with more awesome GBs in the future.
Here's to a successful rest of the GB!
I'm really looking forward to this!

No idea what you're talking about.
I'm just realizing I forgot to pay the VAT thing.
Although, I'd love a quick message on where we are about this GB right now before doing so.

Mate just read the damn update will you? It's on the top of this same page.
Cheers for the update. But the wait is much more disheartening after the Cherry Developer Kit announcement. https://www.cherrymx.de/en/blog/cherry-mx-developer-kit.htmlThose mention that they don't have "fixing pins" for frame mounting which I assume means they're plate mount not PCB mount like we're getting in this GB.

It is a bit. I can't seem to find the kits available for purchase though. Would be interested to see what price they are at.
UPDATE
I've just had an email back from the distributor. They have given me an estimated delivery date of 23rd November 2017! Which is way ahead of the expected schedule. It is worth noting that this date is when the distributor expects to have them. There will be some time after that for the switches to ship to me, and then on to you guys. It's looking like you should definitely have your switches before Christmas!

I was thinking maybe they ramped up production with the cherry dev kits coming out, but then I remembered those kits are plate mount. Sure hope they don't F up and give us plate mount

I reallyhope that we don't end up with plate mount. I would drive myself crazy trying to get that fixed. Could you imagine the hassle in returning 96,000 switches? Or opening every box to check that they are all ****ed up?

any news if you'll be receiving this week?th
It's celebration time!
I've just received word that the shipment was dispatched earlier today. Should be with me on track for Thursday (23rd November)!
The hype is real. So is the urge to fill a bath tub with the switches! :D

I will be shipping them out ASAP. I don't want to go so far as saying definitely but with just under 5 weeks until Christmas I would say there's a good chance of everyone gettign these in time for Christmas. Shipping companies may have other ideas however.

229! I might just have them before even writing this post.

Too much effort to go by region.
I'll be sending out to NovelKeys first and the going in the order that the switches were paid for. seems to be the fairest way to me. For reference Order #00222 was the first Silent Black order. You should be able to use that as a rough gauge for when yours will be shipped. although there are normal orders in among all the GB ones so not 1:1. :D
As soon as I get my switches in, I will try to get them all boxed up and shipped out within 3 business days.
only 330ish orders to ship before mine :)

Blimey, that’s a lot of switches! What’s the consensus on lubing these? I’ve seen a lot of people saying it isn’t needed/the difference is barely noticeable?

I bought some silent black from Sennin's GB a few months back, and while the switches are very smooth stock, they still do benefit from lubing. If you do open the housing though, make sure you have switch stickers or switch films to install to reduce wobble.

Best thing to do is harvest the stems and put them into Zeal housings, lubed with a little too much Krytox 106.

I bought some silent black from Sennin's GB a few months back, and while the switches are very smooth stock, they still do benefit from lubing. If you do open the housing though, make sure you have switch stickers or switch films to install to reduce wobble.
Ah thanks for this, really helpful. :)

I will try basically every housing when i will get my silent, did you tried others too? (e.g. milky gateron for example, or other..)

Gateron milk switches are scratchy. Zeal (aka Gateron housings) are smooth albeit wobbly. Use Gateron / Zeal housings if you want smooth and wobbly (Cherry tops fix the wobble) or just lube the stock housing.

I should have been clearer, i mean the new gateron milky from Kbdfans (that should be the retooled of gateron milky).
Yeah i know zeal housing will be the smoother meme

Has anyone tried the Gateron silent black switches? I hate for someone to bother to put these cherry guts inside a gateron housing when you could get basically the same thing stock. I tried silent cherry reds in a zeal housing and felt like they lost some of the dampening. Also, I still think that the scratchy feeling comes largely from the spring and not the housing/slider. The spring rubbing against the cylinder is a significant source of friction. I've never heard other say it, but I suspect that stock Gaterons have more wobble not only from the stem design but partially b/c there is more space between the spring and the plastic cylinder on which it sits. Cherry and Zeal switches, in contrast, have a tighter fitting spring that rubs on the inner cylinder and needs lubricant to reduce friction/noise.
Stop the off topic?
Can you post a picture of the switch top? I recently got some clears from DoYu studio and I noticed that the font of the Cherry logo changed. Wondering which ones these are. Thanks!

Hey! I can't get a clear enough photo of the switch tops on my phone. I can confirm they are the same logo as the switch top on the right that are labeled "retooled?" Hope that helps! :D

Can confirm they are pcb mount in case people were still wondering.
Thanks George for organising the GB, and the fast turnaround!

If you order from Optic Boards (VicareyG) then it's shipped from UK so you should be fine.
Another 56 packages ready for the post office tomorrow.
That will make the GB 99% complete. 3 packages left and those are for people who ordered other things alongside the Silent Blacks.

Cherry Silent Black GB Update
- Switches are still in transit to me. They got help up in customs, but I have an estimated delivery date of Friday. If they come to me on Friday, I will have all orders shipped out by Tuesday.
- Once group buy orders are shipped out, the remaining stock (which is a ton) will be put up for sale on the site. They will most likely be around .50/switch.

the springs appear to be a lot lighter than the old MX Blacks, very very similar to Gateron YellowI also noticed this, they really seem to be lighter. I bought a couple Silent Blacks from reichelt.de just to play around with and they actually have different springs than the Silent Blacks from this group buy.
My switches arrived today, thanks for organizing the group buy!

Interesting. Since I haven't had any experience with retooled/silent blacks before and I have only a single non-retooled black in a tester here, I assumed it was something that changed with the retool, not with this batch. Is it a slight or significant difference between the two? To me the silent vs the old black feels like as big a difference as red to silent black.

somebody just do the nickel test jeez
I'm starting to wonder if they maybe gave us reds instead. I'll crack mine open once my switch openers turn up.
Those seem MX reds springs, and BTW they are the same springs that you can find in blues and browns. Probably also in clears?
You don't need no switch opener to open a switch without damaging it.
I'm happy if these are Mx reds springs, that I really like more than blanks. Surely those aren't Mx black springs: the higher the number of coils in a spring (don't know the exact word), the softer the spring.
Except the spring, which is exactly all the worry here. It feels much lighter than my current MX black, and I haven't even broken them in yet
Until someone posts irrefutable proof by actually putting nickels on the two different switches proving that these springs are definitely lighter, I would hold off on getting your panties in a bunch about this. You can't tell a spring weight by looking at them side by side with another spring.

I don't have enough coins, is this good enough? (compared to a normal black, silent black is bottomed out while normal black is a bit over 50% depressed)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/mRj4vaW.jpg)
Edit: I could have swapped the spring to make it lighter so everyone freaks the **** out, if you don't believe what I'm saying providing pics with coins on top of a switch proves nothing

Is holding two switches together enough? Maybe I'm just dim, but what does that accomplish?

Could be a mixup, or could be their design. My silent reds always felt much heavier than regular reds. Maybe the added silencing bumpers on the slider make the switch feel a slightly heavier, and they decided to change the springs to compensate? Pulling this out of my ass but it seems possible.
If these feel somewhere between reds and blacks, they'll probably be perfect in my book :thumb:

It's a pretty decent test. I tried this with several switches that had the same springs in them. They all depressed fairly evenly (both stems approximately the same distance into their housings). However, if you take springs with different force curves, you'll see some back and forth pushing in this test. Maybe the actuation is the same, but the force curve is different/lighter after actuation.
I just installed them on a board and they definitely feel much lighter than sennin32's plate mounted silent blacks. I don't mind it at all anyway.

I would have changed the springs for lighter ones so it saves me some work, but that should definetly not happen.
I hope cherry is able to remedy this somehow :-\Even if Cherry provided free black springs, we would still have to pay for the shipment as VicareyG is the actual only customer to Cherry.

I have some standard reds on a keyboard and it actually feels the same of these ones.
I doubt Cherry should provide only the springs, on 96k switches i'm pretty sure many didn't wanted to open the switch at all.Tell me about it. I have 600 pieces.
This is a weird situation, not sure which could be the fair solution.

I hope you didn't planned to open them ALL now :(I have two full size boards to give as gift and, lucky, silent reds in disguise will do. That trim the numbers down to like 400.
Since we are both in Italy, we should pay a slavery service to open 1000 switches for usGood idea but let's discuss that in private.
Cherry should provide the original Silent Black springs at least! (67g as shown above)
I received the our batch of switches last night, all 48,000 of them.
They definitely do have springs that are lighter than MX Blacks, and just a hair heavier than MX Silent Reds. The crazy part about all of this is that they match the silent blacks in my Cherry G80 Keyboard. This is not an isolated issue with our batch, but it would seem an issue with a lot of Cherry PCB Mount Silent Blacks. I dont have Plate Mounted Silent Blacks to test these against, but the previous write up is pretty damning.
If anyone would like to cancel their order with me, I will allow it because of this issue. Please notify me (via email with your order number) before the end of Sunday, as I am going to try to get these all in the mail on Monday.
It is crazy that their whole batch of pcb mounted silent black is ****ed up and no one ever noticed it.
Oh man, this **** up by Cherry is just  !
I jumped on this GB because of the spring weight as Red would've been too light for me. Sad to see this coming up given previous mishaps already. I'd be fine with opening up switches and changing the springs BUT I think that shouldn't be necessary for those of us who would've been fine with MX Black springs.
There's probably a super low percentage that Cherry would send us 96k of springs.
Oh well... :'(
Sending springs is probably the wrong solution to this, since this was a GB :/I'm afraid there's no other solution.

I have contacted the distributor about this. I don't expect a reply until Monday since it is a weekend however.
I will keep you all updated with any news I receive.
I received the our batch of switches last night, all 48,000 of them. Can we wait until we receive contact from Cherry? I hate that it'll put shipping to hold, but I'd like to hear what Cherry has to say regarding the issue. Would they recall the switches? I got 5 packs, and given they are not all for my personal use, I would argue it'd be best if I had switches that matched the correct specifications. I'm torn as to whether I should request a refund, as I personally still prefer to type on lighter switches, although my ideal range is actually between reds and blacks.

The big problem with waiting to hear back is having no idea when or if we will even hear back from Cherry. If people would like me to hold off on shipping their orders, I can do that as well. If I don’t hear anything, I would still really like to get these shipped out.

I tried to send out a mass email to everyone from my site. It says it went through, but I have no real way of knowing.
People who joined with me, could you let me know if you got my email? If not, I will go through and try to email everyone individually.
I'll be offering 3 choices

Didn't get the email you just sent (yet?) - but I'd prefer to get them ASAP since I've got springs on deck to swap in.
Thanks for handling this plausible nightmare and thanks to VicareyG too, this is definitely not his fault either, just very very weird and very very unfortunate.

Yeah I'm just gonna roll with em as well. Though I prefer the name Camo Reds, since it refers to both their silence and exterior.
Maybe we can call this GB "Cherry MX Camo Reds" ?I don't mean to sound rude, but you're mocking the customers who thought they bought Silent MX Blacks and received Reds.
+1 for liking lighter springs

This is not an intended customization of the switches, it's a gross mistake by Cherry and we don't know if it will be ever fixed.
I myself thought it was fine at the beginning, but after a couple of hours of typing, these switches are a pain.
Apologies if it looks like I'm verbally assaulting you, but I'm writing out of frustration.
CherREEEE silent is an appropiate name imho, without the color, because who was in charge to pick the springs went definetely full REEEEEEEE
I have to be honest and say that I'm not too upset about this at all.
I tried lubed silent reds at keycon this year and they felt amazing. My girlfriend loved them and she ordered these silent blacks for one of our builds. We knew immediately that we would spring swap and lube them. I understand that not everyone is about that. Some people just wanted a stock switch but I for one could care less. I never had any intention of keeping these stock.

Just a heads up that if that was my board (the black Eagle v2 with black keys), they're 68g with zeal housings. (Not saying it was, but just to be sure you got the weights right.)
Hey everyone!
Just to keep you all informed and to reassure you that I'm not keeping silent on this.
I have not yet received a response from the distributor. I have sent a further email and I hope for some response tomorrow.
I think the logistics alone would make a replacement un-achievable without even mentioning the cost involved. The same can be said for a return/refund. Due to this I will be pushing the distributor for a partial refund that I can distribute among everyone who has purchased these switches. Please bear in mind that this is what I am hoping/pushing for and not necessarily what will happen.
I am just as frustrated as you all, and I would like to get some resolution or an idea of resolution in place this side of Christmas.
Cheers,
George

partial refund seems the only way to solve this.Enough to buy a set of springs.

I have had not reply from my email to my contact at the distributor. I have telephoned them instead and explained the situation. They are going to call me back after checking with the warehouse to make sure they didn't send the wrong parts. Of course we all know that we weren't sent the wrong parts because then we'd have red switches and not black ones. The distributor deals with electronic parts so are not exclusive to mechanical key switches, so I'll let them go through there step of making sure they sent the correct part. When they call me back I'll post another update.:thumb:
Morning George,
This has been raised with our Marketing Manager who is going to look into this further.
As soon as I hear back I will update you.
Thanks for handling it so well George.
Unfortunately I'm still waiting on my order, got the shipping notification on the 3rd so it means it was shipped in the last wednesday of november, making it 2 weeks of waiting tomorrow :(
I was also looking forward to the black weight so in case we only get a refund where's the best place to get springs with the correct weight in Europe?
I have received an update!
It reads ...QuoteMorning George,

I have replied asking that I be kept in the loop with any detail no matter how small.
Guys, see it the right way! You just received rare switches that will probably be very rare in a few months and highly sought after. :))
And I'm not even joking. I couldn't be more happy to have received switches from a one-off batch!
Just reporting somefactsweird-science after talking with Krelbit and testing plenty of my switches.
Silent switches seems to come with the spring ATTACHED to the stem.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/cbuOIRz.jpg)
Fact is that once the spring is detached, there is no way to put it back. Now Krelbit said that on a plate mounted silent black the detached spring sounds really bad, but i did some tests and in our case seems the total opposite (understandable because we have a different spring).
Basically, apart the scratchiness of the switch, the spring has a really really bad sound when is attached (stock).
You can test it by detaching a spring in one switch and let it attached on another. If you press them hard (or at least to the bottomout) you will clearly hear a metallic sound on the switch with the attached spring (stock), not really a typical ping of some springs, just a boring metallic sound. On the switch with the detached spring you will mostly not hear that sound.
So even if you planned to keep the low-weight/****ed-up spring, i really suggest to still open the switch to detach it from the stem, even if you didn't wanted to lube it (that is always recommended). I tested some other spring (ofc detached) and i can't hear that metallic sound.
So here is a RESUME for that metallic sound:
- If you wanted to change the spring, you are fine
- If you didn't wanted to change the spring but you will open the switch anyway (e.g. to lube), you are fine, just remember to detach the spring too.
NOTE: if you have that metallic sound even on few detached springs (as i had), you can fix that by adjusting/moving the spring and if it doesn't work, just lube these springs- If you didn't wanted to open the switch at all, i'm afraid to say that you should... at least to detach this spring so you will not have that metallic sound (and maybe you will also decide to lube it at that point)
Here are some facts:
- This switch is bad if not lubed.
- This spring seems too long or just poorly made, never heard that weird sound in any switch.
- If you still have the metallic sound even after detaching the spring, lube the springs (mainly on the tip), as our Krel boi says, or just lube everything because life is short and lubing is nice!
- Even if you prefer a light spring, consider getting another spring unless you are going to highly lube that stock spring.
TL;DR Everyone should open these switches. Also this spring is trash.
(Peace and thanks to Krelboi, all said above is not valid for plate mounted switches where it should be the exact opposite)

I'm very confused about this. For the scratchy maybe i exaggerate a bit, I mean it is always scratchy yeah, but at least detaching that spring fixes that (imho it's unusable with the spring attached), I'm not sure how Cherry is happy to put these switches on stock keyboards.
So these switches are scratchy like the old ones, the spring isn't standard, makes strange noises and needs the lube and you can't put it back once you removed it from the stem. Are we supposed to lube the stem or just the spring by bathing it in lube oil? And I've bought two sets of this thing.
Speed silvers kinda have a metallic sound on bottom out. Is it like that? Can't confirm 100% because i have them on a numpad but no spare silver switches. It is not really clear now that they are soldered especially because this numpad is hella loud, but seems like they have that metallic sound as well (not sure if it is the same tho).
Well, might as well search for some lube and springs. Any good places to order lube and/or springs in Europe? If you contact @Calza on Discord maybe he still have some Krtyox. He is the guy who did 105 and 106 Krytox GB recently, from UK.

Exactly in the same situation... I dont even have switch openers - that really wasn't apart of the deal with these switches
Now that the haze has worn off I can concur; the springs are ****. I don't notice too much difference from attached vs detached, but one with a gat yellow spring in it next to one with the detached stock spring makes the latter feel like a linear rubberdome. Looks like I might be making Black Banana switches after all, should have enough gat yellows left over to fill an entire board.
(what was once yellow, and is now black and mushy? a black banana.)
2. The stem is dark gray and not black, is this expected?Silent blacks have a dark grey stem to differentiate them from regular blacks. The silent black dark grey color is somewhere between the MX grey and the MX black.

lube them and they should be less ****ty
the well has been poisoned. now i can't unhear the scratchy sounds. i just bought these for the stems, though. has anyone done a complete transplant into zeal housings with gold springs yet?
Got mine today. I don't really hear anything metallic. They do, however, sound and feel exactly like the silent reds that I just removed from a filco TKL b/c they were the worst MX switch I had ever used. So... I'll be selling mine.
I don't think lube would help. I lubed every goddamn inch of my reds and it did nothing. The springs are just too tight on the stems and they rub (even with lube) causing some serious scritchy scratch.
It's unfortunate, but "c'est la vie."

I just did after you suggested it. Pretty nice. Wobble like a gateron, but much less scratchy. I'd still rather wait and try some silent Gateron blacks before I shell out the cash to harvest Zeal housings.
Also, I got a much improved switch by just lubing and putting in some Sprit springs. I used 72g, which are pretty light in reality and very close to reds. I might try to salvage them by converting the rest to sprit springs. I'm not sure that I even like the silenced switch. It takes all of the fun out of it. Ha!
I should add that these are certainly usable switches. I used switches exactly like this (silent reds) for over a year at work. We're are very picky around here is all.
Can someone send these switches to haata for testing?

AFAIK switches sent to haata are tested after a lot of time (understandable). So i guess if we send now, the test will be out after months

Mmm, I got some 60-ish Gat Yellows that aren't used yet and I'd like to use those springs instead of MX "camo reds". Is Gat Yellows heavier or not really? BTW, "Black banana" switches is a dope nickname. :thumb:
P.S. Haven't received MX Silent Blacks so that's why I'm asking as I can't check myself yet.

68g & 72g sprits are my ideal springs - I plan on using the 72's in these as well.
Morning George,
The product manager has chased Cherry again this morning.
He said he will continue to put the pressure on.
Mmm, so PCB Mount MX Silent Blacks are crap but Plate Mount ones (at least those from Sennin GB) are the smooth ones, right?
I must say though that George is a great GB organizer and the bad taste from this GB is ALL FROM CHERRY. They suck ass and I'll definitely not get any more switches from them.
I find these switches to be INCREDIBLY scratchy. Maybe I'm spoiled. I did open up the switch and apply lube (I use this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RGZHFA), making sure to detach the spring as someone else suggested, but found little to no improvement. Have you guys had any success making the switch smoother? I don't want to buy a whole 'nother set of springs if the sliders are scratchy beyond repair.
Any updates?
If that 5000 isn't enough for some reason, I have 480 untouched that I'd be happy to return for testing.
If that 5000 isn't enough for some reason, I have 480 untouched that I'd be happy to return for testing.
I'll update when I have a reply in the morning, but I reckon the 5% I have left should be enough for them to return to Cherry and then for Cherry to test and confirm the incorrect spring weighting. That *should* allow partial refund(compensation) to trickle down the supplier chain. That's what I'm pushing for at least.
I am hoping that by sending these back Cherry will be forced to test them and see that the weight is not correct.
IF you guys have any advice let me know!
I have had two replies from the distributor today. What would happen for switches that I have on hold from an order through Novelkeys, the US proxy?
The first assured me that she had pushed the Product Manager to put more pressure on Cherry.
The second has asked if I am able to return some of the switches. In order for them to start the formal returns process with Cherry.
I have agreed to return what switches I have left which is about 5000 switches. I am hoping that by sending these back Cherry will be forced to test them and see that the weight is not correct.

P.P.S. Anyone got a build to show using these (either stock or modded) switches? Always enjoy a good buildlog or just nice keyboard photos.
Thanks for staying patient! Thanks to you for everything you're doing.

i put them in my VA68M and i can indeed say they don't feel smooth as gateron switches imo and the ping sound just destroyed it for me i am just going to desolder them and put Kailh heavy switches in :l. Sorry the next person sitting next to me at work :p.
Ordered some springs to swap into these while waiting for news from Cherry. What are the de-facto lubes folks use when lubing switches? Krytox?

Hasn’t almost everyone already their switches? There are about 10 people on my end who asked to wait until we hear from Cherry, other than that everyone was already sent their switches.
Why would a paypal claim even need to happen?

Yup, currently waiting for some lube so I can swap springs on the switches I received.
Right now just patiently waiting for the suppliers' message regarding on how this false spring installation happened and what will be done. GB itself was a great success IMO, just that Cherry messed up the switches on their end and it took a while to notice the mistake.
I decided to buy five hundred and fifty 62g springs on Aliexpress for € 20,00. I wonder if Cherry will ever admit the mistake and give us a partial refund.
Not that many but me too (with the difference that i paid the same for less springs). The current spring on the switch is really unusable.
Not sure if anyone ended up using the stock springs but i would remind to not use it.
I presume lubing the stem dampeners will help with the switch being super sticky.I strongly suspected this. I guess I'll keep the lube away from the silent switches.

I wonder if ultrasonical cleaning of the stems can help to remove the "sticking agent" whatever it is.
I'm interested at buying 100+ if anyone is selling. Thanks!
Hi everyone!
Sorry for the long silence. I received news from my supplier today.
Below is a link to a testing report from Cherry.

Apparently the spring weights are within acceptable limits.
Doesn't seem too good. I am not sure how to proceed form here. Any advice is helpful.
I find it a bit strange that Cherry is actually arguing a keyboard entusiast community. I mean they should care for keeping us satified with their products.
As stated, GB went flawless and I would not hesitate to buy from VicareyG again. Thank you!

End of story then. Cherry claims that the switches are fine, customers think otherwise.
Personally I believe you handled the GB flawlessly and I would surely join the future ones if the goods are in my area of interest.
+- 20cN is clearly just ass covering.
I mean just look at the springs, they even look more like MX Red ones. Nothing like the Silent Blacks I picked up from Cherry at a meetup or any Black I have seen in my life. On the other hand this was still a smooth gb and I don't care for heavy springs anyway.
We should send some switches to haata, a great guy who does curve - force plots with super accuracy. He's in the USA. If someone lives in the USA and wants to do this, he can set up a paypal money collect link, to send haata some switches. I think that many would be happy to contribute one buck to the cause.

Why? We know they're the wrong springs, but they're within spec, so there is nothing to gain apart.
I'm all for further investigation but don't put too many expectation in them. Cherry won't do anything about it.
is it just me, or is the tolerance range even higher than most Chinese switch manufacturers? I can't provide a source, but i could have sworn that outemu has a tolerance range of only +/-10g.

tolerances for all the manufacturers i've been talking to is about the same
Ha it seems like I'm the only one that's actually excited about these switches. Just got my lube in and I picked up some SPRiT 68g springs to throw into them. I expect them to feel amazing.
While I know some people aren't pumped about the outcome of this GB, I definitley bought these switches to mod.
IMO, all cherry switches kind of suck when they're stock...

My experience with MX silent switches in general is that once you've opened the housing once, you should sticker them.
The switchtop loosens up a little bit from being opened, and has a little bit of vertical play once you assembled the whole thing together post-lubing, and actually creates kinda an unpleasant clack on the upstroke. Stickering or using switch film eliminates this.

Hm, that's really good to know.
Any recommendations on which one/where to buy?

Which lube are you using? I have some super-lube I got from mechanicalkeyboards.com, but I've heard it's too thick and that it breaks down fast. I tried it on a few of these switches, and it does make them feel a bit gommy. I got 100g Sprit springs for mine.

Oh we got the geekhack thick lube from zealpc to use. Hopefully it works out alright. I think we're going to play around how much we use and if its not satisfactory then I'll try a different lube. We're putting the silent blacks in an iso kbd75 that my girlfriend wants to have.

IME a light oil works best for linear switches (Krytox VPF1514 is my personal fav for linears), however I have heard of people using thicker products for lubing linear switches. I would say just be sure to go with a very light coating of the Geekhacker's thick mix & it should work out fine.
