The Ave. - Group Buy
An Ortholinear Battlestation

Link to Original IC Thread

The time has finally come people! Its The Ave. Group Buy!!  The ultimate, sexy, cute, and powerful, ortholinear-battlestation!

So things have changed a lot in the past month or so. Here are some main points of note...

1st:

E-Yellow has been tossed out for options just due to its complicated nature and that I know sometimes it can come out looking more Orange than Yellow.  All of us are pretty tough and picky when it comes to colors and without a full and final prototype finished in E-Yellow, I just dont feel comfortable with going through with having it be availible and then people getting upset when it didn't turn out like they expected. No one likes that.

In its place, however, I have spoken with the factory and Sandblasted Polycarbonate will be subsituting the E-Yellow!

Which I know a lot of people wanted and Im excited to be able to offer it for the first big Ave GB! :D

2nd:

the second notable change is that now, every single base kit configuration will come with BOTH a full brass Plate set and a full FR4 (PCB Material) Plate Set!  Options are nice, but having them distributed all over the place isnt lol.  SO NOW YOU GET BOTH SON.

The Ave.

*noun:avenue; a way of approaching a problem

Hello, my friends!

It's Time for an Update!

Click Here To Visit The Short Intro Intrest Check Form!

This is The Ave. (Avenue)

After an amazing response from the community I've kicked The Ave. into high-gear.  Almost everything is finalized and GB "Details" can be found at the bottom of the Page.  Thank you to all who have helped this idea come to life.  Over 1k Form responses... I can't describe the amount of love I have for this community and all those who have directly helped me in this project.

Lets get to some details.

The_Renders:

*Rotary Knob by rionlion100!

*A Huge Amount of more renders (Hint, Hint Abec13), are in the works and on their way now!

The_Inspiration:

If you have ever been around professional studio workstations, or have seen them in TV or Movies before, you will notice instantly the inspiration for The Ave.

Boards like the

G80-9009HAU

and the Yamaha RM 804

They display their MASSIVE stature proudly.

When you see one of these types of boards, You know there is WORK TO BE DONE.

Now I've used 40% from the first moment I jumped onto this crazy train of a hobby.  Something about the simplicity of 40's boards instantly drew me in.  And after the few months of frustration and re-learning to be a better typist.  I have found nothing to be as comfortable as 40-60% ortholinear keyboards.

They are without a doubt, The Thicc Bee's Knees.

But Sometimes, You need just A Little Bit...More.

The Specs. & Details:

Click Here To Visit The Short Intro Interest Check Form!

The_Features

- Two-piece PCB, Plate, & Case Design
-x2 JST Connector assemblies will route all parts together x1 12P for PCBs, and x1 4P for USB_Breakout. (Green Solder mask with Gold Surface finish PCB)

- Top-Mount Style Switch Plate

- USB Type-C Breakout (Center Mount)

- x2 5mm RGB "NeoPixel" LEDs (Fully Programmable and Individually Addressable).

- Smooth, rounded edges and eye-catching inner/outer chamfered rims.

- x2 Different Main-Layout Options (Ortho & Standard 40% 12u-Stagger), both w/support for x1 Rotary Encoder.

The_Colors:
*So a few things have changed since last update, mainly for the sake of cost/smoothness in the GB. Colors for ROUND 1 Ave. GB are as follows:

(All colors will be matched, in-factory, to these Pantones/Specs)

 - Silver (Clear/Silver Anodizing)

 - PANTONE 7605 C [Rose Gold] (Anodizing)

 - PANTONE 432 C [Asphalt Navy] (Anodizing)

 - E-Yellow [Honey-Tone Yellow] (Electrophoresis Coating)

Factory Color Samples:

Ive decided that to keep my own sanity, and to maybe make more of these available to people who want them (there seems to be many based on IC form lol), There will be multiple rounds of The Ave. Kit.  Future Rounds will each house there own unique color line that will run for that round, and that round only.

Top Panel Options:

Top Left Rotary Panel Will be the only option (This is based on the overwhelming majority choice in the IC Form)

The_GB:

First off, Price is still being worked on, mainly in shipping and packaging.  I'm really wanting to do my dream board right and get some really nice packaging.  Unboxing experiences may not appeal or be of a priority to some.  But they are to me.

- As of right now though, the Price is estimated to be ~$320-$350USD + USPS Shipping

- GB is set to be live Late November 2019.

- This First Round will be a LIMITED production run of 50 Kits.

Case Options:

- Top and Bottom Ave. Case (Same Color for each part)
     - Silver
     - Rose Gold
or
     - Midnight Aqua Grey

Plate Options:

- 1.5mm Sandblasted Brass (Staggered Option will also be available)

or
- 1.6mm FR4 (PCB Material) Plate (CHEAPO Option)

Kit Set to Include:

- Full Top and Bottom Ave. Case
- Top and Bottom Ave. Switch Plate
- Top and Bottom Ave. PCBs
- All Connectors for Assembly
- x1 Rotary Encoder
- x2 Through-Hole RGB LEDs
- x4 Rubber Bumpons

-***Staggered-PCB & Plate Options will also be available but at an additional Cost (TBD)

- GB will run Until all 50 units are sold*

The Most Recent Progress:

- (Oct 25th, 2019) Prototypes ARE HERE!

Everything looks so good and its such a weird feeling have something go from months and month of work on a screen, to this INCREDIBLE physical object right in front of me.

- Needing to reach out to a local printing shop to look into getting custom box/foam cut.
- Headed to Local Auto shop monday to see about a quote on 10-15 custom color Cases.
- Ortho PCB Complete!
- Staggered Prototype PCB in production as we speak!

Old/Outdated Progress*

More
Factory Prototype Pics (Meh Incandesant Lighting)

Prototypes have arrived!

It’s such a beautiful feeling Case. Everything lines up to the T and I’m incredibly happy with the fit and finish overall.

This is part of a new design I’m testing out:

The goal being: Make the cheapest Case Possible, while also retaining the feel of the original design.

The bottom and rear are designed to be cut from 3mm Acrylic Sheets. I also have those in, just waiting for the FR4 Testing Plates and then I’ll have a full Build ready for evaluation!

To Do:

- Listen to the community
- Enlist help with getting Prototyping done
- Update Details on PCB when fully tested and complete (a few weeks)
- Work on Implementing the E-Ink Display(Choosing to look at OLED instead of E-Ink)
- Hear back from local Paint shops
- Work on fuller Renders and Sets
- Smile, and remember to breath

I think it has potential.

Personally I'd love the entire top row to be an frow. (and staggered, not ortho, but I digress).

Not an ortho user, I'd jump on this if its staggered.

I’m so excited everyone seems to like the Idea/design!

A few things I want to Look into:

• Adding a standard 40% Plate Option

• Adding Infographic Display (E-Ink/OLED)

• Look into the possibility of Bluetooth (maybe)

Hoping to have more info on Prototypes and manufacturing in a week or two  :thumb:

I'll be watching this one, love the maximalist approach to an ortholinear board, when they're usually minimalist.

This is tremendously exciting, I made an account just to follow this project. I’m really looking forward to renders with various keysets.

The rotary encoder is a fun touch, it’d be interesting to see other controls in the top row as well. The mixer in the first post has me thinking about sliders, toggle switches, joysticks, x-y pads... etc.

Aw heck, you've designed more things I want, haha. When it comes to brass, would it be possible to get it either sandblasted or some kind of matte pvd? Not really a fan of shiny surfaces.
I long for the day when I find a beamspring. (At a not insane price)

Lovely design, ortho sucks. It'll drastically benefit from a staggered PCB+plate option if the cost increase is not prohibitive.

That's a pretty garbage attitude to take about someone else's design, especially when claiming pure opinion as fact. I think OP picked Ortho because they probably like ortho, but they also designed the board specifically around the stylistic, angular lines that you can only get with an ortholinear layout.  Personally, I like how sharp and straight everything is. Very boxy like an old Volvo, feeling very durable looking. It almost looks inspired by brutalist architecture. Functional, overbuilt, hefty.

This IC clearly isn't for you.

Edit: OP, I think a concrete case would be awesome for this board, have you considered trying to make one? I might try to make one if this hits MOQ.

Like I said on Reddit and the IC form, super down for this. Never soldered/built a keyboard before, but this design is exactly what I've been looking for. If you do staggered as well, I'll be able to cover it with keysets I already own and think would kill on this keeb, but if you need to do ortho only, I guess I'll manage!

Why are you offended on OP's behalf? Calm down. The fact I'm even addressing this is completely ridiculous but alas;

Firstly, it's BLATANT that I was referring to an opinion without having to elongate the response for no reason. In my opinion, ortho sucks. Obviously I'm not stating ortholinear as a whole is a disgusting practice and everyone should be ashamed for liking it, you inferring that from my statement is showing bias on your end if nothing else.

You have absolutely not business telling me if an IC is for me or not, especially after I specified that I love the design and want the project to be successful, I believe (in this case I think it to be factual so if you wanna attack anything, do it here) that'll be an easier road if a staggered plate+PCB being offered is a possibility without straying too far from the original idea(s) and/or being cost prohibitive.

+1 for traditional staggered option. If this has a traditional staggered option with alu/half plate I do not think i'll be able to pass it up.

Additionally, what's the idea/reason for the large lack of stuff on the top half of the battleship? The dead space in between the additional keys.

I might have come on too strong, but my opinion still stands. I'm only trying to defend op's design language, which I happen to like quite a lot. I would be upset if this entire IC were to be switched to a staggered layout, which is why I am defending ortho linear.

I realize that you're definitely correct, more people will be interested if there is a staggered option. I only meant to defend what I believe to be a good design with obvious aesthetic choices, therefore I apologize that my intent was misinterpreted, I should not have called your attitude garbage.

Ideally, both options would be available. I hope this gets more exposure, maybe then different layouts will be more viable/cost effective.

Why are you offended on OP's behalf? Calm down. The fact I'm even addressing this is completely ridiculous but alas;

All Opinions are welcome.  It's the internet lol

A Standard 40% Stagger Option will be available.  However, it will be an additional cost.  Plate+Staggered PCB.

I've discussed this will dozens of people on the Reddit thread and Discord discussion and its been a WIP for a while now.  :)

The Staggered option is same as Daisy & asymmetrical bottom row.  :thumb:

Edit: Ill be updating the thread with a big update later this week!

So what 10% does the ortho layout gain? Personally I'm not comfortable ditching the number row just yet, though like I said, this design is so killer you may make a believer out of me.
