Title: What VPN does everyone use?
Post by: _rubik on Sun, 31 December 2017, 13:22:40
Personally, I have been using Private Internet Access (PIA) for the past ~4 years and have no issue with it. There are great linux solutions, and they have a number of servers across a number of countries.

Most importantly... no logs!

Been okay with PIA for several years also, but sometime's it's a victim of its own popularity and its exit IPs get blocked. VyprVPN (comes with Giganews Diamond subscription) is good for tunneling out of restrictive networks that use IPS to block OpenVPN. Was able to get a connection out of my university with obfuscation ("chameleon protocol") when regular OpenVPN connections were blocked.

I use Windscribe - https://windscribe.com/

Free, 10GB a month limit, more than adequate for the little browsing I do.

I've certainly run into their blocked exit IPs. I'll have to look at obfuscating OpenVPN connections. Wondering if that can be done by my pfsense router.

I don't currently use a VPN but I used to use ExpressVPN.
Have nothing but positive things to say about them. If I recall a bit on the expensive side but I felt like the customer service was great and quick.
I'll be checking out the ones you guys recommend here and compare pricings etc.

Also a longtime PIA user but I'm switching over to Nord because it seems like less of the IPs are blocked. I can't connect to craigslist on PIA most of the time but it works fine with Nord, for example. Great price with PIA though.

I've been using NordVPN for the past couple of years, their prices are quite decent if you get a long term subscription when they're doing a sale. Easy to use interface, can also use it on my phone. Everything I need.

NordVPN does seem great, I had a trial of it a bit ago and was nice and fast. Outline (https://getoutline.org/en/home) from Alphabet's Project Jigsaw is neat and I've tested it a bit. It's powered by Shadowsocks (https://shadowsocks.org/en/index.html) (socks5 proxy) and is opensource. Anyone try it out yet? https://getoutline.org/en/home

Currently using Express VPN and seeing as how I have little to no experience with other services, I can't tell if it's considered good or not, haha. I tried tunnel bear and I think I prefer this. Helpful to be able to use on all my devices.

Currently using express and the speed seems to be good.
It is, however, more expensive than the other services by a significant margin so I am wondering if anything else compares.
All of the review sites I have checked list it as the fastest service but I wouldn't know by what margin.

I am using tunnelbear for a while now on my phone and pc as well. I know they give like limited usage but the speeds are never affected because of the VPN. Customer support is great as well. If you don't use much bandwidth then tunnelbear is great.

I use NordVPN: nice speeds and many servers to choose from. Also based in Panama and out of 14 eyes jurisdiction which is a must for a VPN IMO. As someone mentioned the price is good if you are after the sale, for example  this (https://nordvpn.com/special/zerologs3y/) gives you a nice 77% off discount. Maybe it will be of use to someone.

Hello. I wanted to talk about one really obscure VPN called Surfshark VPN . . . (Surfshark hagiography and link to review snipped)
I'm impressed that a VPN reviewer/advertiser dug deep enough to find VPN threads on a keyboard forum.

Heh. I was also going to call out WireStart at the time but gave them the benefit of the doubt since I figured maybe they'd joined to give people a heads up on a discount and would engage otherwise with the community, but apparently not. They also registered on Reddit at the same time.

I use PIA because I got it with HumbleBundle.

Works fine for what I use it for, and ~£15 for the year was too good to pass up. Might look into renewing it, or moving to NordVPN when the year is up.

I've used Private Internet Access and Windscribe for the last ~2 years. PIA is the best in my opinion because they truly abide to their "logless" policy. Windscribe is pretty solid too, but they do keep a record of how much data is transferred within that month (not where the data is coming from, etc. as far as I know).

I have bought its 5-year subscription in $119, also you can read about it more in this purevpn review or check out other platforms.

That's a good point - to mention the speed you get through the VPN.

I only have ADSL2+ (not suffering under the NBN yet) and my speeds are usually about 10-20% slower through the VPN than a native connection.

Mine you, ADSL2+ is not exactly flooding the pipes :))

I used 3 VPNs in total. First ever was PureVPN. I even paid for that one. At one point it stopped working completely. It also never worked on Netflix and similar sites. I had to give up after 6 months using it despite paying for 1 year in advance (not very smart).
Then I switched to ExpressVPN and have been using that one too for around 6 months. I did not like their interface but it did seem to work just fine. Around June this year it started to have problems with Netflix too. Now I'm on NordVPN and it seems to be working just fine. I guess at some point all VPNs will be banned by sites such as Netflix. Here it's being claimed (https://www.vpnteacher.com/streaming/netflix-bans-vpns/) that Netflix will not be able to completely ban VPNs and it will always be a cat and mouse game. I do expect it to become worse in the future though, all they need to do is to create a region restricted website that requires region-specific payments for every country and then no VPN will help to unblock it. HBO already does this.

It happens from time to time.

A little while back we had a bunch of new members join (maybe as many as a couple of dozen), each made one post in New Members (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=109.0), and never came back.

And all the posts said, in a slight variety of different ways, that they worked for a large chemical company and liked keyboards.

I have been using Private Internet Access for the last two years. I chose PIA based on their policies, and their reputation to stick to them. The biggest factors for me when I was choosing among VPN services were: 1) Are they truly a logless VPN service?, 2) What platforms do they support?, 3)  What are speeds like with the service?, and last but not least 4) Pricing / Deals.

I haven't tried a lot of VPNs, so keep in mind that my opinion is limited. After using NordVPN, CyberGhost, and ExpressVPN, I stuck with Nord. The only reason why I use a VPN is for US Netflix content, BBC iPlayer and sometimes Hulu. In my case, Nord worked the best with these features.

The fact that Nord was hacked, in a pretty inconsequential way, isn't a big deal.
EVERYONE gets hacked, Yahoo, Google, MSN, name a large company they have probably been hit and this includes credit companies.
Where Nord really screwed up was they hid it for months and only came clean when they were confronted, and that's IF you believe them about how severe it was.

According to Nord, they private keys to one server were stolen, but only one server, which was supposedly not online yet. So even if they tried a man-in-the-middle attack, no one was using it. problem with this is that server is connected to others, being used or not and worse... it took them MONTHS to tell people, and at that time claimed they were still investigating but it was minimal, but this was only revealed after they were called on it. I can understand you want time to investigate, fine, do a preliminary and tell people. Instead, Nord went full PR mode and tried to brush it off.

Keep in mind, the people who made Nord what it was, are no longer running it. It was sold a while back.

By the way, there is very little you need to Torrent that you cannot get elsewhere, and in a more legal-ish manner.

Sooo, this is why some of us worried when they were silent until caught and worse, when they went full P.R. mode when they did.

Seems they got hit again and considering these were found online, either more was taken than claimed (though they are still "investigating") or they got hit a second time since and are either unaware or not forthcoming, again.
https://it.slashdot.org/story/19/11/01/219231/nordvpn-users-passwords-exposed-in-mass-credential-stuffing-attacks

Everyone gets hacked, these companies need to be more proactive in fighting it and more forthcoming when it does happen.

I feel a bit uncomfortable using a VPN. I just don't feel like routing all my traffic through a private company. Regardless of their terms of service, code of conduct etc. how can you be certain they are not logging things? They say they are not, but it's not like you can audit their servers or anything.

I mean, technically you're always trusting at least one company with all that data; a VPN or an ISP. Just depends who you trust more. VPNs that promise privacy often go a long way to prove it; ISPs never do.

I don't think they're nearly as anonymous as people think anyhow.

If you reroute through say Britain, how many exit IPs are they using there for the exit node?
They still have your browser fingerprint, sure, you now show up at 15 different IPS and a different country but we had that issue when we all used dial up, it didn't stop them from tracking us. And if you're using Chrome, you're even more easily being tracked, at least by Google. They don't need an IP address at all to know it's you, logged into their system or not. They don't even need Analytics if you use Chrome. Why do you think that browser uses so much ram compared to anything else, including other Chromium based browsers like (raw) Chromium and Brave.

If you use Google Chrome and a VPN for privacy you may as well save your money.

Overall, I am happy with the performance of the product, obviously the breach controversy was not stellar, but I think they handled that situation pretty well, and I like that since then they've been doing 3rd party audits by PWC and have teamed up with Troy Hunt.

just so everybody knows vpn do not add any security, they just allow you to change your location from the point of few of the basic location tracking scripts, but those are very imprecise at best anyway, they do not get your address, at best they can get your city, or a city 50km away. so good to bypass region locks, useless for security.

i used both pia and proton until pia got bought by a malware company last year. now i just use proton and it works as it should. i'd personally stay away from companies like nord/pia

I knew about the issues w/ Nord and find it funny when I see a creator plug them in an add in a video knowing they tried to cover up their screw-up.  But I never knew that about PIA, so looks like I wont be recommending them anymore now.  I'll look into Proton to see if it will fit my needs - which I rarely use a VPN too.  I did try that "Gmaing VPN" WTFast - complete garbage imo.

I think that NordVPn is the most useful and widely spread. I made a conclusion based on my friends preferences. I'm also using this program because it has the easiest interface and very simple to use. Also, a very comfortable fitch is that I can select one VPN that is clean and not spammed and add it to favorites. My brother didn't want to listen to me and he was using a different vpn program. Finally, he didn't know how to uninstall it and he did it only after I shared with him https://vladtalks.tech/vpn/how-to-delete-vpn-on-mac After, he had also installed the Nord VPn and using it without any problems.

lmao - well we know who you work for, or at least paid by. (signed up just to make that single post)

Express VPN here.  I need it since I travel abroad for work and often can't get US content in other countries. I have no idea how this stacks against other VPN's but no complaints here.

I've considered using Express VPN, but I need to do more research before signing on - seems to be getting more ads as of lately w/ the YT'ers.
