Replace caps on Cherry G80
« on: Mon, 25 October 2010, 09:50:51 »
Hi,

I am a long time passive user of geekhack, but as I finally bought a G80 3000 some 5 months ago, I thought it's time to register.

I am very happy with the blue Cherry switches in the G80, but these keys with the logo of some strange operating system are annoying.
I searched around for replacement caps for those 2 keys, but I only found strange companies selling custom caps, mostly with a lot of 404 errors on their pages.

Isn't there a shop out there, optimally somewhere in Europe, which sells replacement keycaps for Cherry Keyboards?

Hm all i know is that

1. the spacing between keys on cherry keyboard may be slightly different (someone plz confirm this)

2. the spacebar for cherry keyboard is different underneath as the switch is more to the right rather than dead center of the spacebar. So if you do try to find a replacement spacebar, check underneath whether it is cherry keyboard compatible

3. cherry keyboards use their own stabilizers made of rubber. This is perfectly fine and convenient since removing/installing keys with stabilizers for the cherry keyboard is much simpler/easier.

4. i don't think cherry sells their keycaps separately. The best i've seen are keycaps canabalized off other Cherry keyboards.

Anyway hope that helped. Maybe someone else who knows more can help.

You obviously missed the double-shot key cap order thread:

http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=11998

Signature Plastic makes them for us. You should ask WhiteRice if he still has a contingent available.

These keys will fit your Cherry board.

@7bit

But the spacebar probably won't.

If that's the only problem - well, on a current-production sample with lasered keys you should be able to attack the labeling with sandpaper, or sandblast it Ripster-style.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

Does anyone know what rollover the G80 3000 has? I didn't see it listed in the wiki. Would be great if maybe BeerSec could do a test for us :D

I asked those cherry fools and their local distributors in Germany for custom/seperate keysets.
