Windows 10 Driver Installation Question

When Windows 10 detects a new device, (e.g. a trackball) and determines that it needs to install a new driver in order for the device to work, will it always display a modal dialogue box (i.e. one that must be clicked through before the user can do anything else)?

or

Can Windows 10 automatically install a driver without ever notifying the user?


What I am trying to get at here is: is it at all possible (even remotely) for Windows 10 to install a driver without the user ever knowing?

Sounds like a setting got ticked somewhere, I connect new mice to systems all the time and it just does it.

Thank you for the reply.  So the default setting on Windows 10 is to install drivers automatically without any sort of user notification, is that right?
