« on: Sat, 21 January 2012, 09:18:17 »
Hey all, I'm looking into buying myself an external HDD for backup. So far I think i'll be getting one of these http://www.g-technology.com/products/g-safe.cfm , although suggestions/comments are appreciated.

Thanks

Build it yourself, it will not only save you money it will be of a better quality when everything all said and done. It's super easy, and all you really need is a screw driver. However be warned that HDD have spiked in price since the flood in Thailand. A 2TB Samsung F4EG used to be ~$70 just a few month ago, now however they are $160. which is a steal considering at the height of things they were ~$270.

As for HDD brand I'd personally recommend WD or Samsung. I currently have 4 WD HDDs and 6 Samsung HDDs and not a single failure between any of them.

Also RAID =/= backup
Vendor Status: Sadly, not taking any orders/pre-orders at this time

My recommendation would be to get a Drobo, but if that's overkill or you want something you can transport about then buy an enclosure (I use StarTech ones) and drives separately.

True, however if he's using the RAID as the backup storage it's a pretty good idea.  (RAID 1 that is)

I also like the StarTech enclosures.
Filco w/ Imsto thick PBT
Ducky 1087XM PCB+Plate, w/ Matias "Quiet Click" spring-swapped w/ XM Greens

Thanks for the tips everyone, I decided to go with the G-SAFE 2TB. I am now using it with a RAID-1 setup and it is really, really nice. If I feel like it I might do a review.
