Title: Civ V/VI Discussion & Multiplayer Thread
Post by: HoffmanMyster on Tue, 26 January 2016, 13:44:31
Seems like we've finally got enough people interested in starting up some games of Civ V, so rather than clutter the general computer game thread let's discuss/plan here!  :thumb:

Edit: Civ VI is released!

Meh, I'm not super great.  I've played the game a ton, so I'm very familiar with it, but I don't push myself to improve.  I usually play a level below my "potential" so it's easier.  :))

Being good on single-player is way different than being good on multiplayer.  The AI gets huge advantages on higher difficulties so most of the time you are just playing catch up or trying to stay ahead, but on multiplayer games cold wars, side deals, naval battles, and backstabbing become much more a part of the game and even beginners can team up with other players to take down someone who is way ahead.

I've only played MP with three other people at most and it was a nightmare because we spent like 3hrs setting up a vpn that would work and not have insane lag

I don't know if this will be unpopular, but for the sake of speeding up the game we might want to consider disabling Domination Victory to hopefully stave off lengthy wars.  That's basically always my preference for multiplayer games, but I understand that war is fun too.  :))

And we can do quick gameplay too.  :thumb:

Agreed. Could we also start farther down the research tree? Not crazy far.
I think that will allow us to get close to a game completion.

I find Classical the most fun to start in because you have most of the basic techs researched allowing to improve most tiles, you get to start with two spearmen and a worker, and you still have a decent amount of the early game to play.  That said, if we want to try and wrap the whole game up before 12AM EST, we might want to start in the Medieval or Renaissance Era.

Also, disabling Domination victory is fine by me as you can still go to war, you just don't win if you hold everyone else's original capitols.  Time victory might also be another good one to disable, as it automatically will end the game on turn 500 if no other victory condition is met by then but that very rarely happens.

It's kind of like Bethesda games and their quirky glitches, half the fun of playing one of their games is the hilarious and/or rage-inducing glitches!

I love Civilization.  Played colonization, and have owned every Civ game + every expansion, with the exception of the new Colonization and Beyond earth.  With that being said I'm still not that great at playing.  I can win against computer opponents on low difficulty levels but even on the mid-range ones I almost always struggle.  Is it realistic to expect to consistently win @mid difficulty levels.  My strategy has always to have a few core amazing cities, then try to expand into a huge civilization and obtain victory through warmongering.  Anyone have some basic tips?  If I can get better, I would like to try multiplayer sometime, but I always just assumed I wouldn't stand a chance.  Also has anyone ever played it with a steam controller.  I was thinking if I could lie in bed at night and quietly play some Civ 5, that would be awesome.

For Civ V, the most common build plan is to go for Tradition and Rationalism social policies while building no more than 4 cities and then focusing on science and city growth, while aiming for a science victory.  This route discourages warmongering, large empires, and plays very isolationist but it's certainly not the only way to play and/or win.  When helping people with Civ, at least Civ V, I try to reiterate that science is ALWAYS the most important thing that you can go for.  Prioritize science buildings and science techs over other things, and if you maintain a small but technologically advanced military you shouldn't have to worry about other Civs bothering you too much.

Your play style would be described as wide and warmongering, and in Civ V both of these play styles are hard to pull off effectively without severely impacting relations with other Civs and your own Civ's happiness, which impacts your growth.  This could be a reason that you start to fall behind as the game progresses, so you may want to modify your strategy a little bit if you are interested in winning consistently on the middle and upper difficulties.  Let me know if you have questions though and I will do my best to answer them!

Waateva is the master of Civ with ~1700 hours lol. We're going on our third week now for just this one match, hard to get everybody on at once.

Part of me misses the "OG" vanilla Civ V where you could actually win with a culture victory.  :P

But yeah no doubt Waateva is the GH master from what I've seen, everything he said is spot on from my not-as-experienced perspective.  :thumb:

1700 with a couple hundred AFK hours thrown in, but yes, I've played a little Civ  :p

Multiplayer is still kind of a mess so many years after release but even with the issues connecting and loading for multiplayer and also trying to arrange times that work with everyone's schedule, it's still a good time!  Our game going on right now is one of the fastest games I've played on multiplayer and it's still gonna span probably 8-10 hours, but the longest I've stayed in for a multiplayer game was 28 hours over a couple months before someone won so 8-10 isn't too bad.

Hoffman, Steezus and I played Saturday and actually completed a game in about 5-7 hours.

Hoff won.

I noticed if you just get a little ahead you can keep that lead pretty easily.

I just don't know how to catch up other than war. However that makes the game soooooo freaking long for everyone.

The struggle.

Yeah I always played the game to win by domination, it's fun but lengthy. I had all my nukes in range of Hoff's capital, I should've just taken him out and take the crown for myself. :p

You can get through them a little faster if everyone can stay the whole game, but I've only played maybe one game that happened.

For catching up, sometimes other Civs just steamroll and you can't stop them.  Just steal techs with spies and focus on teching and building all the science buildings, that'll catch you up if it's possible.

I saw your nukes and wasn't necessarily "prepared", but was ready to prepare quickly for such an event.  :P  Not saying you wouldn't have managed to sneak ahead, but it wouldn't have been quite the surprise attack you were hoping for.  ;)

Watching this thread with great interest. Civ II was one of the games that got me into gaming, and I've kept up ever since. Of course, that doesn't make me anywhere near good.

Yes I did, thanks a ton!  I was kinda confused at first because it came in the Amazon box but then I figured it out.

Sorry for bailing tonight as well guys, heading home from work my tranny went out so I had to get it towed and then get a ride back home, so I just got back around 9:30.  My car's tranny has been slipping a little bit lately but tonight it just went into neutral while I was driving and wouldn't go back into gear for a minute or two before I was able to get it to catch and pull off the road.  Throw the $2k quote to fix it along with the sick bug I seem to have caught and I'm gonna take it as a sign that tonight should maybe be an early one.

I may be able to play tomorrow night if anyone else is down, but we can play it by ear.

I really want to get into this game... I've owned it for quite a while now but I've been too intimidated by the cliff-steep learning curve.

I remember Civ I many years ago when I was young... I didn't really understand it well, though, and mostly watched others play it.

It seems like Civ V is a very rewarding game for those who go through the learning process. Any tips on getting into it?

I'm down to play tonight, I don't have anything planned. :)

Bahahahaha, Waateva just wants that sweet sweet victory.

Honestly, I just like to play with humans instead of AI because higher difficulties really just let the AI cheat, but it doesn't make them any smarter.  So even on Deity, if you know a few tricks and know how to abuse the AI's weaknesses such as their almost complete inability to fight naval battles, you can still win pretty easily.

Humans are more fun to play with as there is so much more variety in the playstyles, more secret deals and backstabbing, and less predictability in general which makes even losing more fun than winning against the AI :)

Well, I certainly wouldn't say it's common to get cities that big!  My personal best has been 72 pop with The Netherlands as well (polders OP :D) but it was also a little later in the game.

For game length, I think our last game ran about 6-7 hours but we didn't finish it.

Polders are damn OP esp if you get 9-10 tiles of flood plains + hydro plant late game. All those hammers HAHA.

My game ended at 65 pop because we invaded everything. Probably could have gone higher if we dragged it....

Oh yeah they are, although they are pretty situational.  I've had some stupid good games with The Netherlands but also some pretty meh games too, depending on your start and whatever else you have around you.

Civilization is like Dynasty warriors.

Buy the exact same game 10 times in a row..  Gotta collect them all.

IMHO,  ROTK 11 is more fun because it emphasizes combat...

Civilization feels more like baby sitting..  but now that so much of it is automatic.. it feels like watching the computer play itself..

Yes, but I'm keeping my excitement in check, Civ:BE taught me that :(

My friend is; I'm not sure. The last Civ I played was 2 and a bit of Alpha Centauri. I might get V on the sale if the most important DLCs also are discounted.

I kind of am since it'll be a fresh start for me. I've wanted to get into Civ V but haven't had the time to climb the steep learning curve.

I'm hoping to take up Civ VI when it's released.

It's on sale right now and often comes up with the complete edition for like $12.50 after the 75% off.  Even with VI around the corner V is still a fantastic game and may still be the better game after VI releases, as is the case right now with Civ:BE.

Awesome, we'll probably take you up on that.  PDub had one that we used for a few games but he hasn't been on lately, so that'll be cool if we can use it.

Thanks, Waateva. That prompted me to go and check, and yes, there's a complete edition for about €9.90 too, so obviously money's not a concern, but what I worry about is the time, including learning curve. I guess I'll have to just get it and simply resolve to stop playing if I realize it steals too much time.

It can definitely sneak up on you in regards to playtime, the "Just one more turn..." joke is often too true :D

I think that reading and/or watching a few guides helps a ton with the learning curve, but there are definitely things that take time to learn.  The lower difficulties like Settler and Chieftain help cushion the curve too as they are very forgiving, especially for people who have played Civ or other 4X games before.

I am reinstalling CIV V now that I have a bit more time to play games hopefully :)

If you need Brave New World let me know, I have one other copy left.

The nights I've been around, waateva has just messaged people and added us all to a game. I suppose we could make a group like the CS:GO crowd has, if we wanted.

The cartoony stylized graphics from the Civ 6 trailer remind me of the dumbed-down Civ Revolution titles on the 360 and PS3.

And while those are fun in their own right, I'd hate to see the main franchise turned into a childish toned down shadow of it's former self with half the mechanics and everything becoming automated.

Not tonight for me, although I'm down for a weekday night sometime.

I agree, and while I don't mind the graphical style I just don't think it fits the franchise.  Some people have mentioned that they might be trying to brighten the game up a little which is fine, especially since Civ:BE was so dark and dreary, but I don't think that the overall graphic style needs changed at all.

I agree, there was really no need to overhaul the engine. Even Civ 5 maxed out can still generate some heat on upper-scale systems and technology has only improved since it's release so I fail to see how cutting back on textures and detail is helping anyone.

Not yet! But definitely interested in getting it. I wonder how different it is from civ 5. The graphics are said to be worse, but the gameplay is said to be better. I have a feeling you're not the only one who's busy with things right now. ;)

Hope your move goes well and without issue!

Alright, here are my feelings after about 10 hours logged:

1.  Graphical style has already converted me.  Wonders look much more like actual wonders, animations are much better, and tile improvements are more lush in regards to colors and actual activity.  Also, having the leaders presented in the slightly more cartoonish way actually works quite well as they can pull a bigger range of emotions off with them and it doesn't look silly, as sometimes the leaders looked in V.

2.  Changes to the policy tree are very nice and actually add some depth besides filling a tree out and then moving onto another one.  Tied to that, the government changes along with the cards for policies make things much more personalized compared to V.

3.  AI seems a little better gameplay-wise than V, but they are all *******s.  Given, the game has only been out for a few days so maybe there are methods to working with them that haven't been sorted out yet, but the AI is just perpetually pissed off at you from my experience.

4.  Changes to city states are awesome!  Now you get envoys which you allocate to them rather than just spending gold to buy them outright, and as you allocate more envoys your benefit increases.  This seems like more of a "realistic" approach rather than V where you just dumped money to buy them out, which always seemed rather off.  City state is an ally of your enemy for 2000+ years?  No biggie, just send them a couple thousand gold and they will flip to your side on the spot!

That said, there definitely is some stuff that needs worked out and I'm sure will be with time.  You can sell military units on/off your tiles which is stupid during war (Unit at 10 health and about to die?  Sell it for gold, even if you're half the world away!), camera doesn't snap back to units all the time so sometimes you'll accidentally misclick a unit and notice 5 turns later that they are making a 30-40 turn trip to who knows where, notifications are smaller and some are missing from side bar like your city being able to attack a unit, chopping trees has no limit and is OP as hell right now, and the tech tree needs some work as well.  Eurekas are too good and they happen even if you're not trying to get them, and with the tech tree being thinner than V right now your tech outpaces your production fairly early in the game.  Example of tech tree is the first game I played I hit the Industrial Era in 1100 AD without even trying hard to get there, whereas V you tend to hit it around 1400-1500 if you're going somewhat hard at it.  Given I started the first game at King while I usually play on Emperor on Civ V, but this seems to be a common complaint throughout the community right now (along with Eurekas needing a nerf) so it's not just me!

All in all?  Good times and definitely worth the purchase to me as a Civ addict, but for people who just play casually they may not notice enough of a difference between V and VI to justify dropping $60 right now.

So I bought VI, have just over 40 hours in it at the moment and i'm definitely struggling. A couple of things:

Encampments seem pointless. You get 25% extra XP but in V that would give your unit an instant promotion now it seems to do nothing. It's an extra tile that shoots enemies but when you attack another city with one you just bypass it and it seems pointless.

I also have no direction when i'm playing. I'm on low difficulty settings (try 2 and 3) and I look at the scoreboard halfway through the game and i'm like 3rd or 4th in everything. I try to have a direction (usually science or culture) but then i get distracted by wonders and my production just descends into building everything everywhere, getting hardly any military units until it's the 1800s and all of a sudden i'm close to losing.

I dont think i expand enough, i think i choose the wrong places to settle, and despite having almost 400 hours across all Civ games, I think I just suck at the game.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, and it's partly why I relapsed back to Civ V.  The differences between V and VI are bigger than I originally thought and it seems as I played more and more of VI, the cons grew while the pros shrunk.  The gameplay hasn't improved in the almost-year it's been out and some of the patches have made things worse imo, plus I still haven't adjusted or gotten used to the different play style, coming from V.  I have no problem winning consistently on difficulty 7 when playing Civ V, but I couldn't get past 4 even once when playing VI, so I just think I'll stick with V until it gets fleshed out.
