Modding a Blackwidow Ultimate
« on: Thu, 13 October 2011, 14:01:37 »
Hello,

I'd like to mod my Blackwidow Ultimate to having red LED backlights. How do I do it and how hard is it ? Has anyone done it before?

Thank you.

Those are all very relative questions.    If you don't know the answer to the hows , then the how hards will be harder to answer.

My guess is google will find you more info than can be listed here ( unless it's a link to google find )

desolder each LED individually, noting polarity. install and solder new LEDs. voila. done. if you dont have any soldering skills, pick up a nice weller soldering iron, some rosin core solder, and practice practice practice. i would consider it a 7 out of 10 on the hardness scale for an experienced solderer, and ive had a soldering iron in my hand for the past 13 years. so its up to you.

Sounds like more trouble than it's worth. Someone really going to pay around $50 worth of LEDs to replace every single one?

Someone really going to pay around $50 ...

If you hang around here for long you'll start to see spending $50 for a minor improvement in aesthetics as being a trivial amount.

A new set of keycaps for $100 just 'cause you are bored with the colour of the perfectly good ones you have makes less sense in some ways than the desire to have the only red backlit board at the LAN party.

I wouldn't have the patience to do the work myself but I support tukkez in exploring the idea if that's what lights his/her candle.
