Model M parts / Unicomp - lessons learned

A few years ago, Unicomp changed the way they engineer their frame assemblies.  Primarily, this effects the design of the membrane sheets and how they interface with the controllers (which are new as well).

Here is what the old frame assembly looks like:



And here is what the new frame assembly looks like:



I was under the impression that Unicomp could provide both old and new engineering-level frame assemblies.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  Additionally, only newer Unicomp 'boards can easily use the new frame assemblies (due to the incompatibility with the older controllers).  So, if you wanted to retrofit your older Model M with new guts from Unicomp, you would need the frame assembly, controller, and cabling.  

I did crack open the US layout frame assembly I got from Unicomp and mix and match with the frame assembly (quiet touch) from one of my "on-the-ball" 'boards.  I was successful...however, I feel that it wasn't worth the time and money.  I'd rather just purchase a new Customizer or on-the-ball 'board from Unicomp.
