Title: Chicony 5981
Post by: Touch_It on Sun, 21 September 2014, 23:36:59
Had this keyboard for maybe 3 years give or take and have been using it as my daily driver since swapping the 5 pin at connector for a ps/2.  Apparently its pretty rare so I took pictures so I could share and add them to the wiki.

Finish date = MFG date?

Sorry if my photography skills aren't the best.  I did try.

I've updated the wiki to reference this page instead of your previous topic, since now we have a clearly readable photo of the rear label.

I really love these various Chicony keyboards, but the cases (at least on the ones I’ve used) are so cheap and flimsy, and likewise the thin ABS keycaps.

Swapping the keycaps for some medium-thick PBT caps (e.g. from an old Apple board, or an SGI granite, or similar; unfortunately doesn’t work for the stabilized keys), and then pulling the keyboard entirely out of the case and setting it on a wooden board or something similarly rigid makes the keyboard instantly much nicer in my opinion.

Sometime soon I really need to make a nice custom SMK-switch keyboard.
