Any chance of a bigger picture of Coral Red than that teeny tiny thumbnail? Though it looks like a render so I guess maybe there's no production sample to show?
What's the height of the case front when measured vertically?
So at the end of the IC thread it was implied that the other colors could come in the brushed variant, not just galactic blue. How would one go about ordering a brushed tactical gray case?

Correct. That one is a rendering and I'll be getting those custom powder-coated here in the Bay Area for Originative. The reason that powder is so expensive on this group buy is I'm using a much more high-end shop than I was able to find for the last round.
The coral color will be an approximate Pantone match for 178CShow Image(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7116954/Novatouch%20Round%201/Novatouch%20Round%202/coral.png)
It's actually a really nice complement to the Retro/Seafoam green that I'm running in the core group buy.

24.8mmSo at the end of the IC thread it was implied that the other colors could come in the brushed variant, not just galactic blue. How would one go about ordering a brushed tactical gray case?
Let me mess around in Photoshop and see if I can create a plausible looking mock-up based on my pic of the blue case. If so, I can just add it right into the Shopify store, which is much easier for everybody. Just give me a few hours, and I'll see what I can come up with.
From the retro-green picture in the OP, it looks like powder-coated cases will have their interior surfaces covered. :thumb:
Will that apply to the mating surfaces too?

For the retro green, is that more of a teal color? Looking to match something as close to DSA Lightcycle as possible.

How much does it weigh?
How much does it weigh?
Just under 1.4kg (~3 lbs). Pretty hefty. :)
...I find that the brushed finish version of a color tends to look a little darker and glossier than its matte finish counterpart.
The galactic blue and the galactic blue brushed look very different. Does the brushing lighten the blue color that much? I think I'm leaning to the darker blue color, but just want to make sure it's not as light as the brushed version.
I haven't really followed the IC this time round so I apologise if this question has been answered/has an obvious answer but how come the white/aqua blue cases are marked at $330 rather than the $200~ of the others?
The back story is: I wasn't super happy with the powder coat finishes we got back in round 1. Most were perfect, others had some cosmetic issues. So I decided to offer powder this time only as a sort of high-end upgrade and use a different vendor. I found a shop local to me here in the San Francisco area who does amazing work (you see their samples in the product photos in the GB), but they're crazy expensive and it's a bit of pain for me to schlep the cases over there and the re-ship them separately from the core group buy after they're done. So that's why it costs so much. I regret the high cost, but I feel better charging more for something than shipping something I can't be proud of--or that would disappoint participants. I feel like the prices for the core cases are also pretty good, so we have options for everybody. :)
geez, i think i may need to get a few of these. my wallet is gonna hate me. hard to choose between brushed and matte though. any chance we can get a comparison shot side by side?
actually it'd be great to see tactical gray side by side with tactical black, too.
I know you've mentioned this in passing, but will the price of the case be included for shipping? If it's not then taxes will not be a huge issue, since I'm looking to order more than 1 I might end up paying rather substantially in taxes.

I had two sent to me in Sweden for R1, I did not have to pay any extra taxes.

I think I have to go brushed tactical grey because 2017 has already decimated my wallet for the year, but man am I going to be super jelly of anyone that orders this color :))

I've looked into this pretty extensively. Many people don't realize that customs in many countries can and will, randomly, ask you for an original receipt to prove the value for which you paid for goods if there is any question as to the value. This actually happened to multiple buyers in round 1. If customs find that the value has been mis-represented, the goods can be impounded and destroyed, or a severe penalty can be charged to the importer who is (in the laws of many countries, such as the UK) actually held responsible for the contents of the customs forms. Sure, 99 items may get through unquestioned, but for the 1 out of a 100 that gets flagged, it's very bad news. So that's why, with my sincerest apologies, I have to declare the cases at the legal price paid.
I strongly believe that tariffs are awful and a horrible drag on global economic development, so I totally understand and sympathize with the request, but asking me to falsify official customs documents is like asking me to help you cheat on your income taxes: the risk to both of us just isn't worth it. :( I really do feel very bad about it though.
Incidentally, however, tariffs are calculated not in general terms but on the specific category of the item being imported. This item fits into HTS category 8473.30.5100, which in the USA is import duty-free. That may be true in your country as well.

I'm actually still vacillating on that. This new shop I'm working with does amazing work, and they masked the samples they made for me, but only along the mating surfaces and (as you noticed), not the interior of the case. These didn't suffer any of the problems we saw on some of the edges last time because they did a more meticulous job of it, but honestly I think they can go ahead and powder coat even the mating surfaces since I adjusted the tolerances a bit to compensate. I'll do some tests while the cases are being manufactured (with a leftover case I have from r1) to figure out what the best way to get these coated is, and we can just go with whatever yields the best results. :)

I truly respect your choice. But for me it's a deal breaker sadly I would have love the seafoam or the galactic blue.
Cheers

Great! Retro is really enticing. I might likely have to limit myself to one "budget" ;D non powder-coat case, however.
Will you be using DHL again for the powder-coat cases? And what about those shipping straight from the China factory?
Can you explain a bit more about the powder coated option. What exactly does that mean and why is it nicer than bead blasted?
Also, I saw a GB on originative for your cases but there are different colors (specifically coral red) and they are different prices ($209). What's the difference between the originative GB and the GB on your website? I apologize if I've missed something obvious.

Real life hit me like a truck so I wasn't able to join the last one, but this time I'll get one for sure! :D
Now for the hard part... picking a color! Is the only plain black option the one on the originative site? & is the color in this picture (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1571/5135/products/bumper-1_1024x1024.jpg) the white finish?
Out of complete curiosity, Ryan, what are your three favorite case colors and finishes among the listing?
Those look great! Do you also have any more pics of the Retro Refrigerator?
Interesting choices!! Is hand-brushed any more refined over the regular non-brushed anodizing? What's your take on that? I'm just curious and don't know much about the aluminum finish.Out of complete curiosity, Ryan, what are your three favorite case colors and finishes among the listing?
I think these would have to be my favorites: Aerospace Aluminum (clean and simple and matches my Macs well), Retro Refrigerator (such an unusual color for a case, and I'm a sucker for pastel/desaturated colors), Enigma Black (the subtle 1940s-style texture is very cool and also quite unusual in the hobby).

Lovely way to put it. Thanks for your input. I will see if I can get one brushed and one unbrushed case, for science. :) Thanks for offering us the options to do so! I'm very pleased with where this is going.Interesting choices!! Is hand-brushed any more refined over the regular non-brushed anodizing? What's your take on that? Aesthetically, I tend to favor visual simplicity and soft/matte looks, so I would never have even thought about doing a brushed finish. But someone in the last group buy asked me to see if I could get a custom brushed finish for him. I did, and it turned out (to my surprise) to look really cool! I actually think it does, as you implied, look more refined and less utilitarian. It's still not entirely to my taste (I'm all about the beauty of the utilitarian), but a lot of people are really into brushed finishes, and I can now appreciate why.
Also, again, one of my goals on this project is simply to make some creative finish options available that you don't often seen in the keyboard world, so I figured why not offer it and see if it strikes anyone's fancy. :D

The O Co. version is black anodized. The "enigma black" is powder-coated and has an unusual texture that is different from the anodized cases.
Thanks for the confirmation. I like it because it looks simple and clean. Btw, was told that I may have an issue using the case with my custom Pexon cable :(Is the picture in the first post that of the "aerospace aluminium"? *feeling cheap*
Affirmative. :)
Aerospace aluminum is a great finish. Don't mistake low price for low awesomeness. The color options and costs are really just a question of taste and desire—and, from my perspective, the fuss/cost involved in getting each particular finish made and out the door. ;)
Well said in the video. Without internet and global trade this GB would not have happened. ^-^ Globalization comes at a price -- well what else came without any -- and there are pushback but we just need to learn to deal with it.
Simple and clean? I don't understand what that means in the context of an aluminum keyboard case. In what way do any of the other colors look complicated or dirty?
That's what I was wondering! Do you happen to have more photos of the enigma black vs anodized black? I just can't decide between the two!

Will the cases that are shipped directly from china still contain these parts?
...not even he suggests we should turn back the clock and de-globalize, either culturally or economically.

Uh yeah, I don't think there's any way to put that genie back in the bottle at this point.
The only way to survive in the presence of a competitor who can easily and dramatically undercut your costs is to focus on the segment of the market that can be convinced to pay the premium for your domestically-made product. What added value does that premium buy? You have to have a really strong unique value proposition to stay in business these days.
I can't help but think about Signature Plastics who is facing new competition from MaxKeys. The Chinese version of SA keycaps are virtually identical to SP's but can be sold at a substantially lower price due to their significantly lower labor costs. I think it will be extraordinarily difficult for SP to sell "Made in the USA" as its only value proposition. Already you have community members hungrily eyeing MaxKeys sets for their lower price.
I imagine that if the "Norbauer Case" was something that was in constant high demand, there would inevitably be a Chinese knock-off being sold at 75% of the quality level and half the price. And unless you are like Apple, willing to engage the same kind of labor exploitation your competition does, it would be a real struggle to find a sustainable customer base for that product.
The mantra in the US has always been "Innovate or Die", but I think globalization has made that more necessary than ever.
In any event, I'd certainly rather sell a tiny handful of a product to a small crowd of people who are delighted with the product and experience than be the knockoff company and sell a ton of something at a cut-throat price.
I have heard that as well, but I don't have a Pexon cable myself with which to test.
You can do this with the case, however. ;)

Ryan, could you elaborate on this magnetic connector a bit? Where does one get the connector kit that goes on the inside of the case? And how does one tell Pexon to make a cable compatible with this?
There are definitely other USB cables I could use but I have already invested in a set of Pexon New Style mods with both mini and micro USB connector connections, which makes things easier as I rotate between different boards that I have (gotta give them all some loving on a rotation basis, no?)Thanks for the confirmation. man, i've gotta be nuts, but i'm seriously considering getting a brushed blue, a matte gray, and an enigma. in fact, if not for the $100 premium on the enigma i probably would have already pulled the trigger. hah.

Thanks norbauer for creating such beautiful case! I missed the first group buy last year and I'm so happy that you decided to run it again. At the moment I can't decide between galactic blue and tactical gray. The gray one would most likely be more compatible with wider range of keycap sets while blue color would be more exotic choice of color for the keyboard case. I decided to do little photoshopping with PuLSE and Plum sets. Thanks to you I'm leaning to get both! Nice pics.

So psyched! Any chance of making a matching case for a numpad? CM might not make a numpad, but maybe some other common/popular numpad with a detachable USB cable?
That would be so dope!

If only there were a Topre numpad that supported MX stems like the Novatouch. I currently use an MX numpad. It a silver-colored aluminum Korean custom I got years ago with super ergo clears, which I like a lot, but which is a bit buggy and hard to program.
So, yeah, I'd love to make a custom case for a numpad that I loved and that is readily available on the market; but I would first have to find that numpad. =\

As for the numpad, I think there are in great demand and your design magic and restrained pricing with a leopold fc210tp could well be very popular!
I just wanted to say thanks to the Top Clack guys (and Yanbo from MassDrop) for the nice words about my cases in this week's episode (https://youtu.be/p2AZ5H3XB4I?t=32m21s).
I just happened to be watching and was surprised to see they brought it up. :)
The Enter key doesn't fit on quite right due to the extra stems and the stabilizer housing, but it's not the end of the world. And it's easily solved by dremeling off the extra stems (acquiring an extra Enter key might not be a bad idea, so as to have an intact one still in one's set).

If you want to continue using your pexon cable all you would need to do is replace the usb micro connector and put on some new heatshrink.
Could someone explain why a Pexon cable is any different from any other USB cable, and why it doesn't "work" with a Norbauer case?
Could someone explain why a Pexon cable is any different from any other USB cable, and why it doesn't "work" with a Norbauer case?I would assume the cutout in the case for the USB plug is not wide enough for the plastic housing on the cable. Like mentioned, should be fixable by changing the connector.
I already spent so much on keyboards! I'm trying to psych myself into pulling the trigger on this. They all look gorgeous and I definitely don't want to miss out...
I can only speculate, having not seen one in person, but I presume they're merely putting a heat shrink tube over the normal USB connector, which increases its size slightly beyond the USB spec. This sort of thing has a very desirable aesthetic effect in general, I would say, but it just so happens that it means the connector is now larger than the USB spec says it should be. I intentionally designed the pocket in my case to fit snugly around a connector of the largest size within the spec, so it would give a nice tight visual look. After getting feedback about the Pexon cables, I thought about opening it up a bit more to accommodate larger connectors, but I heard from multiple people that they prefer the look of the tight fit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't intend to. I will investigate drilling holes in the plate instead. Worst case scenario is that I just use the original Topre Enter key.
Yes, that's correct.
I was only trying to refute the notion that enhancing a Topre 23U numpad is pointless on the basis that you can't put nice MX-based keycaps on it. I don't want that to be the reason you disregard the idea of making an aluminum case for it.
Looks like they attach to the socket on the PCB, and some have a crazy cylindrical connector, so maybe they can't fit through the opening?

Pexon's New Style Mod is made up of two parts, Connector 1 and Connector 2, both joined with the "crazy cylindrical connector".
Connector 1 connects to your MKB (mini or micro USB) while Connector 2 is connected to your PC. So, by having two Connector 1 in mini and micro USB respectively, makes it easier whence switching between different MKB. Simply unscrew the "crazy cylindrical connector", remove Connector 1 with mini USB, replace with other Connector 1 with micro USB, screw on and you're done.
Hmm. Try swapping them. I think PuLSE is better on a black (or very dark) case because the alphas are all black. By going with a black case, you allow the turquoise mods to really pop, whereas they sort of just clash with the blue case since the blue tones are not the same (PuLSE mods are almost green). And the purple mods of the GMK Plum set might look good with a dark blue case, whereas the completely neutral gray tones of the tactical gray case don't really combine with any of the Plum colors. (I feel that a tan case would probably have been idea for Plum, but tan was not offered as an option.)

Well, I absolutely don't want to talk anybody into joining the GB who isn't totally enthusiastic to participate, but if you're looking for an excuse: after the first round there was a vigorous after-GB market for these (see Mechmarket on Reddit), with most people selling them well above the GB price. Since I'm pretty sure this will be the last time I'll produce this design (I'd like to move onto other projects and am bad at multi-tasking), you could always look as it as an "investment," with the optionality of simply keeping it if you end up liking it. ;)
Looks like they attach to the socket on the PCB, and some have a crazy cylindrical connector, so maybe they can't fit through the opening?
https://pexonpcs.co.uk/collections/usb-cables/products/new-style-mod-kit (https://pexonpcs.co.uk/collections/usb-cables/products/new-style-mod-kit)
I have heard that as well, but I don't have a Pexon cable myself with which to test.
You can do this with the case, however. ;)

So that's why, with my sincerest apologies, I have to declare the cases at the legal price paid.

Even those shipping straight from China, or were you talking specifically about the powder-coated cases that you would ship out yourself?

Are you selling your NovaTouch, Atredl? I mean, since you don't use it anymore and all...

Thanks again for running this one last time Norbauer! :thumb:
Whelp long time lurker and had to make an account finally to say just how excited i am for this! I actually found "you" a while back when i tried to buy (but sadly missed) the Galaxy Class set. I ordered a tactical grey case.
Oh, and let me know if you ever re-release the Galaxy caps... or if you ever want to part with one of the sets i know you must have someplace sitting around ;P
Thanks for doing what you're doing!

Actually, as it happens, I expect to have something pretty cool to announce about a new Galaxy Class++ set in a week or so. Stay tuned. ;D (If you're not already on my email list (http://eepurl.com/cnnEwr), I'll share any news there.)

Yeah, I'd consider it. I'll send you a time stamp through pm later today. I'm headed out the door shortly.
Retro fridge here I come!
Wow. I have been seriously one-upped in the GIF department there.Hahahaha....good one!!!
The idea is that the shelf liner dampens some of the typing sound. It's a little esoteric and doesn't make for a huge acoustic change (in my opinion), but a lot of people are really into it. :)

All of the above, I'm afraid.

I have just put an order in and got an acceptance mail. I hope I'm not too late or causing any inconvenience.

All is well. I'm going to leave the group buy page open for part of today to account for late arrivals. Last time, several people missed the cutoff by just a few hours, and I wanted to avoid anyone being disappointed. I'm going to Silicon Valley Comic Con today, so I won't have time to draft up the order spreadsheet for the factory until late tonight anyway. So, yes, in short: if the shopping cart is still leting you check out, you can order and make it into the group buy. :) I'll post here when I shut it down later today.
How tall are the riser feet? I couldn't find any specs on that on the order page.
Now, this could be real: :)Show Image(https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1571/5135/products/gray-galaxy-class-2_1024x1024.jpg?v=1478320007)

If you really want to do the job right, put a sheet of 1/10" sorbothane acoustic dampening material in there (you can get it from Amazon). I did this for a Pok3r which I re-cased with a Datamancer walnut case and it made a world of difference. But that was really necessary because the Pok3r had MX blues and the wood case really amplified all the clatter, almost like a speaker cabinet. I doubt that a NovaTouch inside a high-grade aluminum case would present the same need for dampening as my Pok3r, but if such dampening turned out to be desirable, I would go for the sorbothane sheet.
As for room inside the case, sorbothane is pretty soft (and a little sticky) and will compress as needed.

Not sure about the rules on outside links because I tend to see a lot of posts without actual links, but I think I found it on amazon. The ones I've seen are kind of large squares - can it be cut with like scissors or an exacto knife? Even if it only dampens the sound slightly, I would love to have my nova as quiet as possible.
Really looking forward to getting this case. Gonna buy some hyperspheres and lube. I bought my nova used w/ dental bands but they reduce the key travel a little too much. Currently my Leopold FC660C feels and sounds better. If Norbauer ever makes a case for the leo, I would buy it without any hesitation.
As for further mods, I really need to get some 55g domes for the novatouch. Tried a redditor's HHKB with those on it and it felt wonderful, and not too heavy as some thought. That's going to cost a pretty penny too :/
How tall are the riser feet? I couldn't find any specs on that on the order page.
Not accounting for the threaded stem, those from round 1 are 15mm high without the bumpon (about 18mm with the bumpon).

Thanks for the info!
Two more questions: what kind of screw thread does it have?
And do the holes that they screw into go all the way through the case? In other words, could screws for a different (shorter) riser foot be fed through from the inside?
Anybody found/tried different riser feet? Angle is too tall for me with the included feet. Most others that I've looked into screw in from the inside of the case. Anyone found some what work for this case?
The ones that MassDrop recently sold do fit through the holes. I can vouch at least that they can be screwed into the case from the inside. Because the screw heads have a chamfer on the underside and I don't have a chamfer on the screw hole interior, however, the screw head sits a little proud (raised above the surface) of the case interior, and this may interfere with the underside of some PCBs. I haven't actually tested that yet. Anybody else had any success using other feet with the case?
If the novatouch was still available, I would have definitively ordered a case. Any chance for realforce tkl cases in the future?
Just placed an order for the Aerospace Aluminium! Would've loved the Galactic Blue (Brushed) but price is kinda steep when including international shipping :(r2 is supposed to be the last time so, there won't be a next time....
Maybe next time..
Would a USB connector of 18 x 10 x 8mm be able to fit the case?
Great. Thanks for the info. Looks like I will likely need to commission another set of custom cables soon to replace my existing Pexon new style mod set.Would a USB connector of 18 x 10 x 8mm be able to fit the case?
Assuming 18mm is the length of the connector (parallel to the axis of the wire), you should be good. A 10mm x 8mm connector would fit into the connector pocket with even a bit of room to spare.
For those interested in slimmer Micro USBs, I have ordered some, I will wait and see what the quality is like before I offer them, but it should be a workaround! :DFantastic!! Do keep us posted, or me at least. Will need to commission a new style mod connector for this
Do the Massdrop CNC Aluminum cone feet fit with the PCB and shelf liner installed and all closed up? I remember reading that the screws stick up a bit on the inside...

received my enigma case. unfortunately it seems like i may have to send it back to deal with threading on one of the riser foot holes, but it looks awesome so i wanted to post a picture first:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/18uTOP2.jpg)
i'll take another one later today when it's not so bright in here.

Hey nightdriver. Thanks for sharing the photo and kind words! Do send back the prototype case you have there so I can fix that threading issue you were having, if it's a concern to you at all.
For those curious, he had some trouble getting one of the riser feet in and used to pliers to help one of them along, which damaged the finish a bit. Fortunately, I have a spare set of enigma black feet, but I also want to check out the threads to see why they weren't going in easily. In my past experience, sometimes the riser feet do need a bit of force to screw in properly, especially on the powder cases. (I think the powder process may affect the threads somehow—either the heat or how they hold them during coating). For those situations, I recommend against using metal tools and instead would suggest using something grippy like drawer liner. If you screw the riser foot in until it hits resistance and then back it off until it's loose and then screw it in more with force again, you'll find that each time it goes in a little bit more until it's in all the way. This process essentially re-forms the threads on the foot using the tapped grooves in the case bottom. I have never encountered a riser foot situation where this process didn't work, even though it required a some slightly annoying effort/patience. :)

Unfortunately they won't do powder-coated white.
Maybe the Peach will inspire Ryan to produce what they won't...
Do you mean a 100% board+case in white?
I'm not trying trying to be coy or cagey, btw; I just don't want to promise something until I'm sure I can deliver it. I'll start an IC thread once I'm 100% sure I can produce it.

Oh man, that is going to be one hard-core retro keyboard when you're done. I love it.
By the way, the cases are almost done (!)—well ahead of schedule. Machining is likely to be done tomorrow, and then anodizing next week, barring unforeseen problems (and when aren't there any.)Thanks for the update!
I think I'm maybe going to use the extra time to get some custom boxes and packaging made so that they'll be well protected during shipment. With any luck, stuff should hopefully be shipping out around the beginning of next month, still nicely ahead of schedule.

I'm hoping since I generally don't mind that some keysets go SA r4-r3 on the bottom two rows, that I also wouldn't mind mixing profiles. We'll see. If all my mods end up being oblivion it won't be so bad either haha.Waiting on /dev/tty CMYK R5 mods and SA Oblivion F-keys and mods for every other key.
MT3 is noticeably shorter than SA. I think mixing them would look and feel pretty odd.
Hi the thread stated that there is one more spot left but I couldn't make any order? Is it taken? You should PM or email Ryan (or both), he has the details.
Hey Norbauer, I've sent you an email. I just wanted to make sure that you've received it.
Cheers

Nope, everything's fine! I'm the one with the Blue Brushed Case. I'll reply to your latest email, sorry, I was a bit busy.Hey Norbauer, I've sent you an email. I just wanted to make sure that you've received it.

Hiya theillumedpanda. Since I don't always know how GH usernames map to real-world names, I can't be sure that I've replied to you, but at present I don't think I have any unanswered messages. Feel free to ping me if i missed anything. ;)
I'm looking to sell my Galactic Blue (brushed) spot (seen here: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1571/5135/products/blue-brushed-1_1024x1024.jpg?v=1491597409 (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1571/5135/products/blue-brushed-1_1024x1024.jpg?v=1491597409)). If you're interested in it, please PM me.
I know this takes time to manufacture and ship, but is there an approximation as to when the boards would be shipped/delivered to the US? I want to time it so I can get hyperspheres, lube, and foam liner shipped so I can add all the mods in one go.

We're on track to ship earlier than expected, likely in a couple of weeks. This is always subject to hiccups and unforeseen delays, of course, but for buyers in the US, I'd currently expect to see them in the middle of, or certainly by the end of, June.

Thanks for the quick response! Also not to push it to the point of exhaustion, but I'd be the first in line for a fc660c case :thumb:
Haha. OK, guys. I'm calling uncle. I just ordered an FC660C and will start working on a design for it while waiting for the RealForce prototypes to be sorted out. :)

HHKB is feeling VERY left out at this point...Please don't leave out the smallest brother of the topre family
HHKB is feeling VERY left out at this point...I think that it's particularly difficult to produce one, I'm not too sure why though. If I remember correctly, I've seen Rama talking about its difficulties and why it takes so much time to create one, but I can't provide any further information I'm afraid.

Do you have any B-grades/damaged/samples that your going to sell? Id be very interested to pick up a dented one for example, since i missed the GB.
Also, will Originative get any more restocks of them?
Super nice cases anyhow.

Sorry for the off topic question, but this seems like a collection of people who might know the answer; is there an aluminum case that could be modded to fit a novatouch? I ended up being an owner of one couple days after the last GB place closed. :'( So, what did people do before our god of the forge Norbauer's creation; I'm pretty handy with a dremel and a grinding wheel... was there any known moddable case?
I did find one reference on reddit, but can't get hold of the user to get more details /how well it worked out.
TIA

Is that time estimation still valid? A couple of weeks just passed ;D

Yes, it is still valid in terms of manufacturing the cases. The cases are actually completely done and ready.
However, since we were running ahead of schedule, I decided to take the extra expense and time to get some custom packaging made, which is adding another two weeks or so to the ship date. It ended up taking a week or so longer than I'd hoped, but I think it makes for a very nice upgrade, both in terms of the aesthetics and the safety of the packaging, as it adds custom form-fitting EVA foam, which should add additional protection to the product during shipping.

I've also gotten the packaging samples and they look great. Manufacturing on the boxes began yesterday and takes about two weeks.Show Image(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7116954/Novatouch%20Round%201/r2packagingsample.jpg)
I hope you guys don't mind. I think you'll like the final result. :)
Don't mind at all. I haven't gotten around to modding the Masterkeys boards that will go in these anyway.

I just modded a Masterkeys board for my case, it's super easy. I was able to desolder and resolder the whole board in ~2 hours.
may seem quaint but i'm a big fan of nice packaging. makes getting something seem more special.
thanks norbauer!
Nice box! Will it come with the cases ordered through Originative?
This could be handy to store a keyboard away. The NT stems do not protrude that much from the alu case.
So this might seem like a minor nit, but will I be able to store a NovaTouch with keycaps in that box? For instance, with SA keycaps?
The box looks so nice that it would be great for storing the board when not in use. But it doesn't look like there's enough clearance under the top cover to accommodate keycaps, especially high-profile keycaps like SA or MT3.
...
I didn't design or test for this scenario, but there is foam up under the lid with some give to it, so it's possible. The box lid will probably just not come down as far on the side of the bottom half of the box.

Thanks, guys. I felt the same way and thus figured it was worth a bit of extra wait. I also just thought it would be fun to learn how to design an EVA foam cutout and box like this, which it was. :)
Oh, and yes, the Originative cases will also come with the custom box too.
Will there be any extras of these by any chance?I suspect there were be extras with oco

So hype! Is it going to be shipped by boat? Are we thinking sometime in the 2nd or 3rd week of May?
Thanks for the update!
If we're getting a powder coated case, is it possible to switch colors by any chance?

It is not too late assuming you ordered a powder coated color and want to switch to another powder coating color. The anodizing has been done for a few weeks already, so unfortunately I can't switch anyone to an anodized finish that didn't already order one.

I assume you meant July, since May is already over. ;)
Assuming so, it should actually be a bit faster than you said, because they're definitely not going by boat (which is painfully slow). The orders will be shipped via express internationally (usually 2-4 days, barring customs delays), and by batched express and then FedEx ground for USA destinations (adds maybe 2-4 days on top of international express). This is my first time using the fulfillment provider, so I don't know exactly what their turnaround time will be, but assuming they're reasonably fast, some people in Asia might see their cases as early as the last week in June. And I would expect most everyone's to have arrived by the middle of next month.

Does anyone know if this case is compatible with the new coolermaster masterkey s pbts?

Round 3 please!
Can't believe I never thought to ask, but how tall are these cases? How does it compare to the original plastic case?
Will I need to remove keycaps before transferring my board into the new case when it arrives? I just received a new keycap set and am anxious to get them mounted, but will wait if I need to remove them for installation.

Hi all. Sorry for being quiet for the past week or so. Being busy with work from the "real world" kept me away from keyboards for the past few days. Alas.
At any rate, I wanted to offer an update. Boxes are done on the 21st and then make a cross-town journey to the factory, where the cases will be placed into them with the hardware and will be inspected by my agent for any cosmetic defects before being shipped out in the following few days, at which point everyone should get tracking numbers by email. Apologies again for the slight delay, but hopefully you'll all like the little box upgrade I decided to spring for and it will have been worth it. :)
I am using EK Mechlube 2 for Topre - works for me like a charme

Do you notice any difference? Topre is buttery smooth stock, seems like we would be getting into rather diminishing returns... Curious to hear if there's a perceptible difference.

Hi all. Sorry for being quiet for the past week or so. Being busy with work from the "real world" kept me away from keyboards for the past few days. Alas.Hi norbauer, just curious how much extra time you think the powder coating for the Retro Refrigerator / Enigma Black / Space Station White colors adds to the process? I think you'd mentioned it somewhere previously in the thread but I'm forgetting.

Do the silver cases get an anodizing pass? Or are they "bare aluminum"? Can they be powder-coated after delivery?
I'm not actually asking about these cases in particular; this is more of a general question. Basically I'm wondering if "uncolored" aluminum aftermarket cases can typically be powder-coated after the fact, or do they have some sort of sealing agent covering them that defeats the powder coating process?
Round 3 please!

I promised myself I wouldn't, but then a million people emailed me to ask, so now I'm thinking about it. :) Let me see how this whole third-party fulfillment thing goes and I'll make a determination in a couple of weeks. If it really goes as smoothly as it's supposed to, doing follow-up orders like this isn't nearly as burdensome as r1 was for me in terms of time and work, so I'm open to it if it helps keep folks from feeling like they missed out.

The powder coating shop says "2 weeks," but based on my last experience (as mentioned in the GB page), this led me to estimate "about a month." The shop does amazing work, but breakneck speed is not their specialty. =\

If you do decide to go for R3, you NEED to do the Apple Space Gray and annode finish/texture to match the new iMac Pro! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
I'm seriously considering the regular silver iMac because there isn't a Norbauer case available in space gray, LOL!
I might be in the minority using a mac, but hey, it's at least worth throwing that out there. :p
Hi guys! For some reason GeekHack stopped sending me email notifications for this thread so I didn't see the past several posts until now. Sorry about the slow reply as a result.
I'll answer several of the questions answered above below, but firstly, I wanted to provide an update. The packaging (which is was the last component holding other stuff up) is finished now and at the office of my colleagues in Shenzhen (not the factory, but the inspection/fulfillment folks). The aluminum cases are being inspected at the factory today and then are going over to the fulfillment guys for final kitting with the parts (screws, bumpons, etc.) and boxing. Then the cases should start shipping. I'm *hoping* that this might mean people get their ship notifications as early as this week, but everything always takes longer than people promise so I'll pessimistically assume next week is more likely.Show Image(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7116954/Novatouch%20Round%201/Novatouch%20Round%202/Keyboard%20package-1.jpg)Show Image(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7116954/Novatouch%20Round%201/Novatouch%20Round%202/Keyboard%20package-2.jpg)

That's a nice Norbauer logo I see here on the bottom part of the case. Much better than the sticker from the previous round. Is that lasered on the aluminum surface?
Ha. You know, I was just in the Apple Store the other day and had the exact same thought. It'll be tough to match it exactly, but we could probably get in the neighborhood.
Hey norbauer, any idea how well the retro refrigerator color would match the cyan color from GMK (color code TU2)? My favorite keyset is hyperfuse and it would be awesome if they worked well together. I have an enigma black already ordered because I'm a scaredy cat to change it.I was in the same boat trying to match as close to SP's ABS BFQ color. He said it best matches Pantone 325C, which looks about as close to GMK TU2 as you can get from GMK colors. Obviously lighting conditions and other factors will change how it looks in person but I think it matches both of those color codes very well.
Hi guys. It is with some pain that I must report a slight delay to the r2 shipment, albeit in the name of quality.
As promised, I hired a third party inspector to come in on Monday and verify that all of the cases were made to spec. All of them looked good in general, but I outlined pretty rigorous inspection standards, so the inspector rejected a decent number of them based on small cosmetic blemishes in the anodizing finish. The factory has already started a rush job to re-make these cases, and they estimate this work will be completed in...roughly 10 days. :( Unfortunately, because of the weird way of the fulfillment warehouse charges for its services I can't really afford to ship in two batches, so this means a delay of 10 days or so for all of us in the meantime.
The exception to this is the powder coated cases. I'm taking the extra expense of having those shipped to me now direct from the factory so work can begin on those here in California as early as next week.
For whatever it's worth, the factory is extremely sorry for these problems and wanted me to extend their apologies with you all for the delay. Honestly, I'm a little frustrated that they didn't catch these issues earlier (all of which were caused by their anodizing vendor), during the period when we were waiting for the boxes to be finished and the cases were just sitting there. But I guess what's done is done, and I didn't want to raise too much of a fuss because they are being very accommodating to get these issues fixed ASAP.
Please just let me add, however, that I'm personally truly sorry for (and, frankly, slightly mortified about) this delay, and I hope you guys will stick with me just a bit longer while I ensure that the cases you get are of the highest possible quality, which at least will now arrive in nice upgraded custom packaging and with the confidence that they've been checked over very thoroughly and any issues directly addressed.
If you have any questions or concerns, of course just post here or feel free to email me directly.
Agreed.
There's only so much you can control when you are trying to get the best anodizing work done for the most reasonable cost. That tricky trade-off is frequently going to lead to these kinds of failures. But I think we all understand the economic dynamics involved and I, for one, will gladly wait a little longer to have it done right. The opportunity to pay twice as much for a more reliable anodizing vendor is long past, and I'm not any of us would have wanted to pay that premium anyway. A little extra wait is worth it, all things considered.
...a delay of 10 days or so...
Hi guys. It is with some pain that I must report a slight delay to the r2 shipment, albeit in the name of quality. Thanks for the update. Don't feel bad, not your fault. Don't mind the longer wait so long as the quality of the final product is top notched!

These types of projects aren't worth doing if it's not to get something uniquely well made and beautiful. For me, that's the fun and rewarding part.
Thanks for your understanding, everyone! I really, truly appreciate it. I know I've personally waited for GH group buys that shipped literally years after I sent payment, without a word—and some not at all. So I've always promised myself that when and if I ever ran my own, I would make sure people had a better experience. I'm glad at least you feel I'm living up to that aspiration, even with this relatively short delay. :)The most important thing when running a GB, is to keep the participants updated. I've noticed some will crawl under a rock leaving participants in with a high level of anxiety from lack of updates. So, I always appreciate updates, good or bad. With the latter, work arounds/solutions/resolutions....helps to keep some semblance of calm to us buyers. Keep up the good work!!
I'll keep nudging them along to get these turned around as fast as possible, but I agree with everyone that top quality is the most important concern. These types of projects aren't worth doing if it's not to get something uniquely well made and beautiful. For me, that's the fun and rewarding part.
As always, I'll post any news as soon as I have it.
Does anyone know how much longer the Originative orders will take to ship? (Just curious no rush). Thanks!
Any news about re-anodized cases?
It is what I would describe as good to medium-good news.
Are the powder coated cases still looking good for the 8/1 ship date? That galactic blue looks awesome btw.
I know that I'm being impatient by asking, but any updates on the defective cases?
I know that I'm being impatient by asking, but any updates on the defective cases?
Not at all; I was just about to provide an update actually. I'm told that the anodizing is now done (yay!) and that the laser (re-)engraving will happen early next week, meaning (theoretically, fingers-crossed, breath-held) that the cases should head off for fulfillment at some point in the second half of next week. If for some reason on the final inspection there are any other few cases that have defects after this process (I certainly hope not), I'll ship the rest immediately and get the others fixed on a case-by-case basis—no pun intended—as I don't want to wait any longer to get these out.
In other news, I stopped by the powder coating shop yesterday. In their typically un-rushed fashion, they informed me that the cases are being bead-blasted now (just to make sure there is no residue) and are will ready for powder coating "in the next week or so." I told them I really want to get them out the week of the 25th and they said that shouldn't be a problem.

I've been a little spooked by some of the cases having anodizing issues that had to be re-worked here in r2, so I'm now feeling a bit reticent about using a fulfillment company (which would mean that I won't be able to personally inspect each one). With the understanding that this wouldn't cost anyone any extra money (other than me), how do you guys feel about my doing again what I did in round 1: shipping the cases to me first and then I'll ship them directly to participants? I don't expect any problems after things have been so thoroughly checked over now, but I just want to be extra cautious by personally inspecting each one myself.
I know I'm being a little obsessive. But it just keeps me up at night worrying about people getting cases with my name on them that have something wrong with them. :S I just really want everyone to be happy with what they get and I'll feel better if I get to lay my hands on each one before it goes out.
So here's what that would look like. The cases are still set to ship from the factory this week. I'll be out of town the following week at the big Star Trek convention in Vegas, so that means all cases (both domestic and international) would ship to GB participants from California as soon as I get back, the week of August 7th. Given that it would take some time to get everything processed and sorted into the fulfillment company's system anyway, I don't think this would constitute a major delay relative to what we already had planned. As you guys hopefully noticed last time, I know my way around a tape gun and label printer like the best of 'em and am thus a pretty fast shipper. ;)
Thoughts?

Thanks, guys! I'm still confirming some final logistical details, but I think this sound like a good plan then. It means my living room will be covered in bubble wrap and boxes again for a week when I get back from the convention, but that's actually sort of fun. :)
Regarding Originative orders, those were always going straight to the Originative office for fulfillment in LA, and that plan won't change. I'm sure they'll have a close look over theirs before they ship them out as well.

I might be horribly mistaken but I can't find an estimated shipping date, is there any date set already?

No worries. It's a long thread, with some twists and turns. These are slated to ship the week of August 7th. I would be sooner than that but I'm going to be in Las Vegas for a Star Trek convention the week of 31 July.

Are you showing off your galaxy class keyset? :P
What's the status of the powder-coated cases?
I missed it again!!!! Any chance there's one more black I can give you money for?
The week has finally arrived. Lets hope everything goes according to plan!
Thanks for all the updates! The week has finally arrived. Lets hope everything goes according to plan!
Thanks, guys! I am indeed back (arrived very late last night and am still caffeinating myself back into consciousness) and will be spending today doing some more prep work of the packing materials. Last I heard, the cases left the inspection/packing place last week and are on their way to me. I was hoping for them to arrive today or tomorrow, but who knows with DHL and customs (last time the cases languished in customs delays for several days). I've sent a request for the DHL tracking number and should know more specifics in the next 24 hrs. The good news is that the feedback from the inspection people was positive, so it looks like the initial production issues were ironed out in the re-work.
I'm also cajoling the powder-coating people. They were supposed to get the cases to me last week and didn't, so I'll follow up this afternoon. I really want to inspect and ship all these together this week so I can do a single UPS pickup; hopefully the timing will work out.
Thanks again everyone for your patience.
Long shot, but any chance you'll have any spares?
It's not exactly the most action-packed material, but for some reason I love watching pretty much any kind of manufacturing and assembly
... I'll probably do another quick "mini group buy" right after the r2...
Incidentally, I have some video from the kitting and packing process for anyone who is curious, which was shot just the other day. It's not exactly the most action-packed material, but for some reason I love watching pretty much any kind of manufacturing and assembly, so I figured I'd share. :)More
Has anyone tried putting a CM masterkeys inside the case?
I'd consider joining R3 for a second case, but I don't have a second novatouch :p
I bought a used QFR, but the top case is in really bad shape and is not useable without damaging keycaps. I'd use it bare, but I want to protect my new FrostyFlake controller
It definitely fits the Masterkeys Pro S. I haven't tried it with the non-Pro Masterkeys S, but at the very least you'd have to remove the 3 LEDs above the arrow keys for that one.

Quick question, do you plan to do powder coated cases in R2.5?
To be more specific: I've been promised powder coated cases this afternoon and should be able to ship some of them this afternoon and tomorrow, but it now looks like the anodized cases won't arrive to me until next week.
I'm kind of at my wit's end with vendors providing overly optimistic timelines for when things will happen; I'm sure it annoys you guys too, and it makes me look like a moron because things always get pushed out to a few days from when the last scheduled date was.

My expectations are always very low when it comes to overseas vendors (Chinese in particular). Their track record, on the whole, is unimpressive enough that I feel incredibly lucky if nothing happens to disappoint me. As such, I fully expect to be disappointed, usually multiple times during a project.
almost all creative projects observe Hofstadter's law (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofstadter%27s_law).
I didn't know about this threat when I originally purchased my case from Originative, or I would've probably gone direct. Where does the Originative batch fit in with shipping and such? Thank you sir!I also ordered via Originative so I could snag a Novatouch as well. I believe Norbauer said that those shipments were direct from the inspection group in China to Originative. I would guess they would show up around the same time but not sure how long Originative needs to do their own in-house inspection and shipping. I'm thinking (optimistically) maybe a week later than if you ordered direct. Total guess though.

What threat?
Any chance of having a type C breakout board to replace the stock mini USB in the next round? If I recall correctly your Topre design in progress has Type C so I was wondering if this would get updated.
There is some talk about the r2.5. Is this something that is next in line or something that might happend after the Realforce case?
... I'll probably do another quick "mini group buy" right after the r2...
still a few weeks off.
Got my Enigma Black case today. The photos might not be very good but it is most impressive. And considering it was shipped internationally to London it arrived very quickly too. Thank you very much Norbauer!
Now I need to bring much Novatouch back from work to put it in the case.
Back when I pre-ordered, I figured, hey I'll have more than enough time before my friend's birthday in September. Little did I know how overly optimistic I was being, though I really shouldn't be at all surprised. This is the mech keyboard hobby we're talking about after all...

Round 1 went super fast. The main issue that caused round 2 to take longer was the Galaxy Blue. It proved an exceedingly difficult color to anodize due to the unusually high number of dye pigments required to match it, and it was thus the source of almost all the anodizing issues that delayed things this round. (Of course, the factory only mentioned this difficulty with the color after they returned the first batch and I observed that the color match wasn't right.) As such, I'm sorry to say that in the next round I don't think I'll be able to offer Galaxy Blue again. It's just way more trouble than it's worth. (You guys have all been very patient, which I greatly appreciate, but it still causes me a lot of stress to be running later than my planned schedule, so I want to do anything I can do avoid that in subsequent projects.)
Incidentally, by way of an update, I got the tracking numbers for the anodized cases last weekend, and they have been en route since then. I keep hitting refresh on the page twenty times a day, but as yet don't know precisely what day they'll arrive. I keep hoping they'll arrive this week, since that's what the freight forwarder told me, but I guess I need to keep remembering to keep multiplying everyone's time estimates by a factor of at least 3. :(

Norbauer, will you be sending the anodized cases to Orignative or should they have shipped directly from the anodizer to them?Interested in this as well, when I reached out to Originative it sounded like they were waiting for them to all arrive in the same batch but I'm not sure.

Latest info: I offered to check the cases over before forwarding them along to Originative, so they'll be shipping out to Originative with the others in the next day or two.

I'll be reaching out to affected people later today or tomorrow to figure out how to handle those situations. I have rush replacements already on the way, but given that I'm already shipping later than I'd hoped, I'll also offer refunds or free r2.5 finish upgrades to folks affected by the shortfall....

Thank you for the update, do you know if this affects any of the Originative orders? Thank you!Shipment notification! :D Now to try and stop refreshing DHL every 5 minutes :))
Yay! All the DHL boxes that got shipment notifications should be going out today. The remaining USPS and UPS parcels will be picked up en masse on Monday, so those tracking numbers won't go live until quite then. But in any case most people, both in the USA and abroad, should be getting their boxes next week. :D
I still have several orders to work through, but I'd say I've boxed and labeled 75% of the cases at this point. I did have some finishes that either never showed up or had cosmetic blemishes. I have rush replacements already on the way, but given that I'm already shipping later than I'd hoped, I'll also offer refunds or free r2.5 finish upgrades to folks affected by the shortfall. I just couldn't bring myself to ship out cases that didn't meet my standards; I'd rather mildly disappoint some people than ship cases with my name on them that had cosmetic flaws--especially with a r2.5 around the corner, which means that this round wasn't the last time these would be available.
Again, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for supporting this project. The machine shop did an amazing job as always, but the anodizing vendor this time caused a lot of hiccups and delays, but I've got a new production strategy for future projects/rounds that should hopefully smooth over and prevent such difficulties. In the meantime, I have really appreciated everyone's patience and understanding while I've gone back and forth with the factory to ensure that the cases we all got were as high quality as I could make them.
As I've said so many times before: keyboard people are awesome. <3

Would you be able to provide photos of the effected Tactical Gray cases? Personally, I'm uninterested in any of the powder choices, and even more uninterested in not getting a case.

I would strongly recommend taking a second look at the powder coated cases, it doesn't feel like a painted case if that's what worries you and it's a finer texture than 60s - 70s shrink coat. It's amazingly tactile, you will look for excuses to stroke your case and, touching the case, leaves no fingerprints. The powder coating gives the case the gravitas of a high end item that is quite hard to put into words. Now - admittedly, for some keycap sets, an anodised finish would be more appropriate; but, unless you are matching your case to a specific set, imho, you won't go wrong with a powder coat. In fairness, I'm basing this on my experience with Enigma Black only, and my comments apply to that finish predominantly; but I ordered enough powder coated bit's and bob's in my past day job, to make a fair guess at what the smoother finishes would feel like. - it'll be interesting to hear the experience of others, as they get their orders into their dirty little mitts...

Hey Norbauer, can you explain what will be offered in r2.5? This would help me decide what to do with my gray case.
Nice, too bad I can't choose Venice beach instead of tactical gray. Venice beach sounds fantastic!
Darn, im set on tactical gray but its no longer offered :(

Possibly a purple similar to GMK's DY (see https://imgur.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/sS8geqB (https://imgur.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/sS8geqB) ) or maybe something a little more exotic like a metallic purple such as this Candy Purple https://www.powderbuythepound.com/candy-purple.html (https://www.powderbuythepound.com/candy-purple.html).
Is there an example of what the Galaxy Console tan will look like?
Yes, I'm going to do a photo tomorrow. :)
I was also one of the ones affected by the Tactical Gray issue and can't decide what to do.
The key set I would most like to use with this board is GMK Carbon but I can't decide if Enigma Black or Space Station White would match better. Typically though I'm not one to keep a set on a board forever so other sets I may use are GMK Hyperfuse, GMK Nautilus (when it arrives), and GMK Laser (if it ever launches).
I'd appreciate any advice!
Can we also see examples of what you mean by more aggressive textures?
I'm giving folks the option of a powder coat upgrade, a partial refund and the case, or a full refund and no case.

The second purple would be a great match for laser. Ugh, now I'm hesitant about my Venice beach choice, lol!
I'm looking for a case to match GMK Laser as well.
That's my photo haha.
I actually like Carbon more with the white KUL case because it's slightly off white. Here's a side by side comparison. White KUL with SA Carbon on the left and the Space Station White case with GMK Carbon.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/ScpTBTT.jpg)

Round 2.5 is up now (https://shop.norbauer.com/products/cnc-aluminum-case-for-cooler-master-tkl-boards-round-2-5), by the way. I'm not really going to actively publicize that until Wednesday, when I'll hopefully have some pics of the red and pink colors (and maybe a purple), but I figured I'd get it up now so that folks can see the powder coat color options available. Having r2.5 happen now works out because it'll allow me to get folks replacements who were affected by the r2 shortfall while also accommodating the many requests I've had do make a few more. I aim to please. :)HYPE

Is round 2.5 the most expensive one yet?
Got any pics showing the difference between Tactical and Enigma Black? Is the only real difference the slight more textured feel of the Enigma?

Hi Norb:
Have you considered cerakote options for future rounds? It's extremely durable (far more so than powder coat), and comes in a wide array of colors, many of which cannot be achieved with standard anodization.
Thanks,
P
Oh man that pink is amazing. Please please please do a purple to go with Laser!
Can you post some pics of the color you're looking for?
Possibly a purple similar to GMK's DY (see https://imgur.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/sS8geqB (https://imgur.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/sS8geqB) ) or maybe something a little more exotic like a metallic purple such as this Candy Purple https://www.powderbuythepound.com/candy-purple.html (https://www.powderbuythepound.com/candy-purple.html).
Can we also see examples of what you mean by more aggressive textures?
Whats the differences between the $220 and 330 cases? Is it different materials? Different finish?

Hey I was one of the affected orders. I have replied to the email with my choice of replacement option. Is there anything else I need to do?
How about this one:Show Image(https://www.prismaticpowders.com/uploaded/public/final_pi_PTB-6696.jpg)Show Image(http://scontent.cdninstagram.com/t51.2885-15/s480x480/e35/c135.0.809.809/16790194_381642165554863_1051595211685232640_n.jpg?ig_cache_key=MTQ1NjAyNzEyMTczMDE3NDkyOA%3D%3D.2.c)
It would be a special-order powder, but if a at least 2-3 people ordered it, it would offset the expense enough to do it.
All these color terms are getting a bit overloaded, but we could call it "Enigma gray." ;)

I don't think you'd want the accents to be too close, you'd just end up with it looking like a poor attempt was made to make them match...
Hello,
There seems to be a problem with the order dispatch.
I ordered a Galatic Blue Brushed case (paid 295,14 usd with shipping with 1 EUR = 1.03 USD).Show Image(https://scontent-cdt1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21106580_10207923320921234_7321478588413336156_n.jpg?oh=a8f6df5a30d22f274b9b3220045f00f6&oe=5A2901CB)

Basically I spent 352 eur (284 + 68), equivalent of 420 usd today (1 EUR = 1.195 USD, and received a box listed 199 usd (166 eur at the current FX rate) !!!!

Hey Norbauer, I'm in the same boat as TheEerie Cold. This could be the case to get for Laser, as I havent seen anything that could be a good match with Laser's colors, except for the purple that TheEerieCold noted, and your Venice Beach Color.

Exact same situation here, answered asking for enigma black, but if this is an option for us I would go with the tactical gray.

I just wanted to check - the case comes with the risers. I get the impression from pictures this raises the keyboard to about the same height/angle as using the inbuilt stand on the CM. But your website says it raises it to the same height as NOT using the stand - is this just a typo?
That black full wrinkle coat looks pretty neat. Does it affect tolerances at all? Keys still glide/fit smooth and the top/bottom halves mate flush etc.?

The case does indeed come with risers. Specifying the angle is somewhat confusing/misleading. My angle with the risers is based the angle of the face of the keyboard case relative to the surface on which the keyboard rests. When the riser feet are installed, the angle of the face of the keyboard case is roughly the same angle as the native angle of the Novatouch (again, relative to the table surface) without its own flip-out feet deployed. However, because my case is a bit higher up off the desk, this feels subjectively like a slightly greater angle than the native Novatouch in use. So, subjectively, I would say it's feel probably in between the Novatouch with its own flip-out feet stowed and when they are deployed.
I like my keyboards at an angle, a flat keyboard is a travesty. Worst case I can put some extra feet on of my own design.
Yours looks significantly steeper with the risers than the flat case without feet deployed. (This is a good thing from my point of view). Maybe not as steep as with the feet deployed but at least it's not flat.
Hehe. Yeah, I'm all about the travesty. I love my keyboards dead flat. But I know I'm in a minority, hence the riser feet.

I was actually amazed by how close Tiffany Blue and Retro Refrigerator are! The main difference was that yours was matte whereas Retro is more like a medium gloss. I think Retro is also a tinge more green. Your photo makes the Tiffany color look more blue than I remember it, actually. In any case, thanks for posting the pics. Glad it arrived safely!
What's the texture/gloss level on astrophysical purple?
(Fingers crossed for medium gloss/no texture)

From the picture sample it looks like it definitely has some texture.
I have tried to follow along the best I could forgive me if this has been answered.
I believe originally the cases were going to be sent directly to oco but norbauer elected to personally inspect them prior. If this is correct have they been shipped to oco yet?
thanks in advance.

There is actually no texture at all; that is just an illusion created by the metallic flecks. I'd say the gloss level is a sort of satin finish, but not completely flat.
I received a customs invoice of 68 eur (while this object is in category 8473.30.5100 that are exempt of custom duties). Ok, instead of filling a claim, I paid to be sure that the delivery will be fast...
You still have to pay your local EU sales tax on anything over €22, and sales tax applies to the postage cost as well. Allowing for a processing fee, €68 is correct on ~€300 (item+shipping price) of goods? Contact your local tax office to query it, if it wrong I'm sure they will refund you after you fill out a form and provide receipts etc.
There is no import fees on this category of material, only sometimes 20% VAT, so I should have had 295 usd x 20%, knowing that 295 worth 247 eur today, so 48 eur.
I am catching up on the recent pages of the topic. I didn't knew that there was issues with anodized options. So I imagine that my ordred option is not still available.

Ah-ha! Here's where you all are chatting. I've been over on reddit missing all the fun here.
Anyway, I've mocked up to the best of my ability how I hope Enigma Gray will look... more or less. The two "samples" embedded in the image both come from the Prismatic site, with a quick attempt at while balance. The sampes from prismatic appear to be taken with a flash - as such I suspect the "real" color will be somewhat darker.Show Image(http://imgur.com/v6t8XQ9.jpg)

Norbauer Thank you for constantly communicating and taking extra care with this GB.
I have read what you've said concerning the OCO orders (thanks for answering my question yesterday).
I wonder how I can ensure that my individual order within the orders to OCO was not effected and is en route to me.
Sorry if I haven't pieced this together correctly but I'm getting a little bit antsy since everyone appears to have tracking information or some other communication from you by now. Cheers

That is correct, and yes, they are on their way to LA now. There was a slight shortfall from the factory for the Originative orders, however, so a few people will have to wait an extra week or two for theirs. I've been so busy today I haven't even had a chance to update Sheraton on all this yet. It's on my list for the evening.

If you can, could you elaborate on the short fall? Was it a specific color or just a few cases? I ordered a black from them after the gb was over so I'm guessing that I'm on the far end of the priority list. Just curious, I don't mind the wait.

Is it just me or, despite all this speculative raging in public, have you not yet actually emailed me to resolve this minor shipping mistake for you? Let me know if I missed a message somewhere.
Round 2.5 now has its own proper thread now (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=91292.0) (just approved a few moments ago). Perhaps let's move discussion of r2.5 over there, and this thread can serve for feedback and questions concerning r2.
I really doubt you'll get a noticable difference with expensive stuff; but, if someone can prove otherwise - I'd be keen to see your results.
This might be an incredibly stupid question, but... are the screws for holding down the plastic USB bracket, and screws for anchoring the board into the case included with the kit, or do we need to use the screws from the plastic case?
I got my board this morning as I was walking out of the house. After quickly trying to assemble it before leaving I noticed the screws from the original plastic case won't work for holding in the plastic USB bracket into the new case since they are too small. I didn't see any screws included with the case other than the ones used to hold the two haves together. If there are some included screws I might have just missed them as I was in a rush to leave this morning. If not, what screw size do I need since I'm pretty sure the ones from the keyboard will not fit.

Not at all a stupid question! There should be two small button-head screws included in the poly-bagged packet of parts, which is in a slot in the foam of the box (perhaps easy to miss). You should use those to fasten the USB bracket to the CNC case and not the ones that came with your Cooler Master case. If for some reason those screws were omitted when your hardware kit got packed, just let me know and I can send you replacements.
These are the screws, btw: https://www.mcmaster.com/#94500a221/=1963kwz

I'm not seeing the screws unfortunately. I checked in that slit in the packing material as well as the ground where I opened the box. If these are pretty standard screws that can be bought from a hardware store I can totally do that; however, if they are specialized then you might have the ship them out.
My Aerospace Alu arrived. Love the build and the heft of the case. Alas, the pair of feet are missing the rubber/silicone ends though. Also missing the hex screws for the USB connector and flange screws. Appreciate if you could make arrangements to send them to me too. I've PM you my order number.
There were a couple of tiny dings and some minor scratches on the inside of the case, but everything you can actually see looks great!

Thanks! Yes, I intentionally exclude the hidden surfaces of the case from the inspection criteria because such things are never seen in use—and not including them in the QC criteria actually helps keep the cost down by decreasing the reject rate. :)
Question: There were four screws in the baggie. The two small ones were perfect for the USB port clip, but what are the two wider, more domed, screws for?

What is happening with the Tactical Gray cases that didn't pass muster? Are those going to be stripped of the anodizing and reused for the powder coat?
So...I'll post a review of this...
Disclaimer: I've bought into keycap group buys, but this is my first mechanical aluminum keyboard/case group buy purchase. I bought this with my own money. And pardon my potato pics!
Norbauer's CM TKL Case is functional art. Period.
The user experience of this product, from unboxing, to assembly, to typing this review is nothing short of stellar.
Packaging alone had passers-by at work stopping in their tracks to ask what it is. Very premium. The case fits so well in the tray carrier, there's a slight vacuum effect, and whistles when you pull the case out. So satisfying!!!
Aluminum texture is slightly rougher than on an Apple product, and the finish is bright, lively, and clean.
The fit of the plate/PCB is amazing. The fit of the USB port is fantastic. The design for assembly even allows me to really dial in how the two halves align for sticklers like myself. Stick some foam in this, and you'd swear the keys just go into a solid block of aluminum (because it is!!!). No pinging, everything is just S O L I D & T H I C K.
Wow, wow, wow. Just wow. THIS is how luxury keyboard products should be.
My only nitpick (and this is me reaching for something) is the riser feet grind the case a bit on the last bit of turn. Maybe include a die cut clear plastic/film (think transparency sheet) washer for run 2.5?
So, if you are a Mechanical Keyboard enthusiast and you don't have one of these, and are contemplating... buy one. Or two. Or three. Norbauer is running GB 2.5 for this, and I don't think he wants to run another round after this, so buy one, or risk paying through the nose for one, if anybody even wants to part with theirs. You won't get any of mine! :p
Overall: 9.9/10

Oh man. Thank you so much for that incredibly fantastic review! :D The prospect of making eventual just a few people happy like this is precisely the reason I do these things, stressful though they may sometimes be. I really do personally view these projects as artistic exercises, so for you to call the case "functional art" is really enormously gratifying for me. Thank again, so much!!
Your idea on the rubber feet is a great one; I'll investigate!

I'd echo the same sentiments as autobot, nicely done, looking forward to the RF87 case.
My (minor) suggestions for improvement:
1.) Would definitely try to mitigate the grinding feet :D, I saw the aluminum and knew it would grind, but didn't want wobbly feet either so I tightened it down a bit. I haven't unscrewed to check for damage, but I wouldn't ever use this in the "flat" position either.
2.) Other suggestion was to more accurately match the bump-on locations to the size of the bump-ons you're going to provide. The holes/divets are slightly larger than the bump-ons and you can't really get them centered properly (seen on pexon's picture of the feet). Functionally they work fine, just aesthetically they're off a bit.

Nice to see the brushed version at last :) Which keycap set do you have in the photo?
Awesome. Thanks for the kind words. :D
#1. If you ground it in hard, there probably is a little circular mark there. I figured if people were going to use feet that they wouldn't be too worried about a circle in a hidden spot on the case--especially one that is extra-not-visible when the riser feet are in use, but all the same I don't mind investigating some kind of rubber washer as a buffer.
#2 is intentional. I have to leave clearance for the powder coated cases, as the powder tends to collect in those corners and significantly reduce the diameter. The current numbers were based on quite a few tests and are a compromise between the best anodizing and powder sizes.

Thanks. I was curious about how the paint shop would handle prep for this. I've read too many regrets on PC case modding discussions where people went cheap and their fresh powder coat chipped off the slightest knock.
Bead-blasting for powder coating should use a much more aggressive (higher particle size) medium that fine finish blasting for anodizing. The rougher media leaves more "tooth" in the aluminum surface for the powder to grab onto.

I tried to find some old examples of the poor paint jobs and failed, but I did stumble onto this (http://www.pfonline.com/articles/powder-over-anodized-aluminum) comment. It shouldn't really be a problem with a conscientious and professional paint shop doing their thing.

I have purchased and used XCEL neoprene ordered off Amazon. It's 1/4 or 1/8 inch thick sheets, dirt cheap compared to any specialty material and I'm sure 99% as effective. You can get a roll that's enough to do 10 boards for less than what the specialty sheets cost.Gonna be a while before I can do it, but my plan was to go with this guide (http://imgur.com/a/YdH00)
Anyone know what kind of material he's using? I tried searching Amazon and eBay, but couldn't find anything that looked like the same material.
zslane recommended sorbothane which is available on amazon under the name "Isolate It".
zslane have you used it for this purpose? What thickness would you recommend?
Ryan, do you have any updates on Tactical Gray replacement eta? I know the special order powders could be longer/unknown, but curious if the cases have been sent off for finish removal.
So as someone who isn't going to find a novatouch anytime soon, can anyone with the regular cm pro s boards tell me how well this case works with your board? Anything I should know before I jump onto this hypetrain?

Those are just pieces of dust. I tried my best to stamp out any dust in photoshop but forgot to do the keyboard itself (focused on the keycaps).

I used a single 1/10" sheet, which I cut into the necessary shapes, to fill the bottom of a walnut Datamancer case for one of my Pok3rs:
(Attachment Link)
Without the sorbothane, the bottom-out and upstroke noise would echo inside the case in a really unappealing way. The sorbothane pretty much killed that noise dead, and now you can hear the light click of the MX blues more clearly since it is no longer drowned out by all that other noise. It also added a nice bit of extra weight to the keyboard (sorbothane is surprisingly dense and heavy, and the walnut case was surprisingly light).
I also used the same stuff in the bottom of a Lambo 60% case that houses my KBP V60 mini (with LightCycle DSA keycaps), though to be honest, it really didn't need it.

Any suggestions for keycap set, preferably SA ?
Can you explain the difference between the "medium texture" Enigma Gray and the "wrinkle texture" of Royal Wrinkle? I love heavy textures, but I'd go for gray over black if the textures are the same/very similar.
Sure! Happy to help. The main difference you'd notice is in the pattern of the texture. The wrinkle texture is just like it sounds; if you look at it up close you can see very small/fine convoluted lines. The Enigma Gray texture is more just like a random smattering of tiny bumps, which when taken at the macro scale form a bit of texture. The wrinkle is probably a bit thicker, but they're both pretty flat and even than you'd probably imagine for a texture finish, so it doesn't impinge on the clearance area for the keys or anything like that. I hope this makes some sense, but just let me know if you need any further clarification. :)

Okay, then I take it that the feel would be about the same - pretty smooth, maybe with a little more grit/bumpiness for the wrinkle finish. The main difference would be the visual appearance - either "wrinkly/wavy" or "pitted/sandy" like these two pictures:Show Image(https://s29.postimg.org/4gthbx587/paint.png)
Does that sound right?
By the way, are there any news regarding the replacements for early-caught color problems? If I understood the mail correctly, they should be reaching Norbauer just about now, am I correct?

I believe originally the cases were going to be sent directly to oco but norbauer elected to personally inspect them prior. If this is correct have they been shipped to oco yet?
thanks in advance.
Will these few missing Originative cases go through to you as well for additional QC or fly straight from the manufacturer to Los Angeles?

Since he got it from OCo, I think that's just bead-blasted anodized black. The way the photo has the sunlight coming in at an angle (as oriented toward the face and camera) makes it look like the case has much more texture than it actually does.

Arrived yesterday. I'll be packing and shipping those this evening.
Just built my Galactic Blue Novatouch, lubed, silenced and all that jazz. ...
At the powder coating shop now. I machined a special jig for the shop to use when bead-blasting the cases and risers to protect the threads (which have an annoying tendency to tighten up on the powder coated cases), which I just got to them last week. So they should be bead blasting them this week and coating late this week or next. The shop is highly variable in turnaround times, so I won't venture to say when we'll get them back, but that is where things stand now.

Any news on the r2 tactical grey replacements that are currently being powder coated?
Here's this past weekend's project. Space Station White case with silenced NovaTouch and Round 6 SPH keycaps:

These Norbauer cases are absolutely exquisite!
Does anyone else have issues with their novatouch plate vibrating? When I depress any of the keys in the asdf row and release them with my fingers still on them, I can feel the keys "vibrate" under my fingers. There's no sound, but I find the feeling irritating. I separated the plate from the pcb to install silencing rings, and I'm wondering if screwed the plate too tightly to the pcb (or not tightly enough) when putting it back together. Is this an issue all novatouch boards have?
I put sorbothane on the bottom of my norbauer case, but I don't think it's doing much.
Curious is this case compatible for phantom or filco build, I love that retro refrigerator color, and wondering if any one had tried phantom or even LFK tkl (the PCB I am planning t ouse) build on this case

By slate do you mean black anodized? If so, Originative should have those by the end of the week, but if so, you've also got the wrong run/thread, as those are part of r2.5 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=91292.0). ;)
