Any chance they could sand blast finish afterwards?
This should technically work for the Ducky Shine II 9087 model right ?
I might get one :)

From looking at pictures of the outside of the case I would guess it would work. I couldn't easily find pictures of the guts to be able to give a better idea than that though. You're best bet would be to open it up and compare it to a torn-apart Filco TKL.

IF you'd like I can take apart mine. But I'll have to look for some tools tho.. :p
Edit : I found an old pic when i dismantle it last timeShow Image(http://i.imgur.com/14OCqKQ.jpg)
not exactly the clearest pic. can you sorta work it out tho ? :)
Exactly what I was looking for!! Thanks much. Ordered.
BTW, can someone explain how this plate mount allows access to the switch case? And how to open the switch case with a similar plate? Thanks and sorry for the newbness....
Unfortunately not much can be done about the prices USPS charges for international shipping.
Im gonna get some pics up later, hope its' compatible.

Yeah, I also haven't had much luck explaining to USPS how their international prices are wrong.

If there is enough canadian interest, it may be cheaper to ship to a proxy in canada for local distribution.
By the way, I am really happy about this. Enough of those lame aluminium plates! Stainless steel doesn't need to be shipped on a hardboard to prevent it from bending in the mail (though it helps). Stainless steel is awesome. I hope I can get one.
Is there another price tier in the ~60 plates range?
If so it might be worth waiting because it looks like we will get these 36 orders with ease :)
I'm tempted by at least 2... If you were to buy these, would there be anything stopping you from dremeling out the bit of metal between the modifier switches on the bottom row to allow for different sized mods? In effect creating a sort of "Universal" plate, to use the GH60 terminology

Wow, 28 orders already!
Any chance we might get a little discount if we reacher higher tiers?

If you have a PCB which supports PCB-mount stabilizers, then sure, you can do that. The reason this design doesn't incorporate that "feature" is that you lose the ability to use plate mounted stabilizers, which are needed by most of the TKL keyboards this is designed for, including Phantom.
I'm interested but can we talk about a Canadian proxy?
I'd act as a UK proxy if people are interested. I've done similar things in the past and am familiar with posting things on this end. I'm definitely in for one plate but no more than that I think :)
I'll look into it for you :)
The only information I would need is how much they weigh packaged up. If it's less than 500g (which it should be right?) then it'll cost £4.95 (about $8) which added on to half the shipping cost from the US is just over $20 which would indeed save you some money :thumb:
Depends on how many others we get involved as 3 plates (which is all we're at now) would cost too much. I might have one other interested but he wants to know:
Will this fit a Leopold FC200R (which takes plate mount cherry stabs) ?
Woohoo!! Almost there! :thumb:Depends on how many others we get involved as 3 plates (which is all we're at now) would cost too much. I might have one other interested but he wants to know:

It is compatible with cherry plate stabs but I don't know if it will fit the FC200R. I couldn't find readily available pictures of the guts of that keyboard so your friend or someone else would have to pop open the case and compare the existing plate to the picture from the first post.
Regarding international shipping, keep in mind I can only get 2 plates per envelope so for proxy shipping to even approach being worth it I think we will need at least 4 or more plates shipped in a large flat rate box ($75). Im guessing I could get close to a dozen or so plates into one of the large flat rate boxes.
The good news though is that we're up to 32 orders now!
When does this end? When the MOQ is met I'm guessing. I think Strict mentioned he wanted to keep this a relatively low order since it's his first time working with this company.

Should be getting a prototype plate early next week

Yes, I think it is quite rate to have 6 number 5 in a row like that.
Here is an imgur album of the prototype I picked up today. This is a 063 aluminum plate that was used ONLY for the prototype, the production plates will be 304 stainless. Aluminum was used for the prototype mainly because I was just concerned with all the measurements being correct and making sure the tolerances could be met.
There are some slight surface scuffs and markings, however they are all pretty light. The production stainless plates should be a more resilient metal and hopefully have less markings. Let me know what you guys think!
http://imgur.com/a/Up10e (http://imgur.com/a/Up10e)
Yeah, I'm somewhat surprised this isn't sitting at about 50 orders so far. One thing to think about, if you can afford it, is that you might want to pick up an extra plate, or even two in this GB. The plates only seem to be made once a year or so, and people are ALWAYS wanting them. You could probably use one of these to trade for something that doesn't come along every day, because these plates will end up being highly sought after once they haven't been produced for a while. New people come into this hobby all the time, and want things that were made before they started.
Now, if there is a steady stream of them being produced, this doesn't really apply, but I feel it's better to have extra than not enough. :)
Looks good :thumb:
Strict do you think you will do a round2 after these are made?
Yeah, I am also interested in a Round 2, if you offer a universal plate that allows all kinds of setups. Like 1.5 mods and short right shift keys similar to the universal layout of the GH plates :thumb:

I could easily design the plate to have those options, but what PCB would you use it with? Almost all the keyboards this plate is designed for use plate mount stabilizers only, not PCB mount. Meaning there are no holes at all on the PCB for mounting stabilizers. And to have a plate with those different layout options, you have to use PCB mount stabilizers. Because the holes in the plate for switches and stabilizers overlap, so you just end up with a big hole where the stabilizer goes, and not the proper cutout for mounting the stabilizer to the plate. Which is fine, as long as you can use PCB mounted stabilizers.
I guess the few people who have A.87 PCBs could use a plate like that, but I don't think you would ever hit any kind of MOQ for the plate. :(
Oh, I wasn't aware of these details. I am still a total noob when it comes to building a keyboard :p
The Phantom will be my first project. Doesn't the Phantom PCB allow 1,5 Mods or were you specifically talking about the short right shift key?

I broke the stem of one of the switches on my FC200R. Since this kind of damage isn't covered by my warranty anyway, I was thinking about doing some other mods. What would be the best way to determine if the plate would fit this keyboard? I saw a couple of other people ask about it in this thread, but it doesn't look like there was a definitive answer

I can't be sure, since I haven't tried this plate on a Leopold, but there is a high probability that it will fit. If it does, you also gain the ability to mount stabilizers to the plate which will accept normal spacebars. :)
Went ahead and ordered! These look too nice to pass up :thumb:
Thanks again for making this happen Strict! :thumb:Went ahead and ordered! These look too nice to pass up :thumb:
That makes number 36. I plan on closing this up by end-of-day on Friday and starting the process of sending out PayPal invoices either Saturday or Sunday. If all that goes well hopefully I can give the go ahead to start production on the plates by the middle of next week.
Best get chasing up this end then - can you wait to hear from me? I won't hold things up - I promise!

I plan on closing the order form on Friday night so as long as you can get those orders sorted out by then thats no problem. If not, you/they will have to hold out for round 2.

If I have a QFR, is the benefit of this plate that I can do switch top removal without desoldering (well, once I've desoldered and resoldered to install the plate)? I'm kind of looking for an excuse to buy this, but I'm already pretty happy with the default QFR plate (I THINK it's powder coated stainless steel).Yes, once the plate is installed, it will allow for the removal of the top of the switch which will allow for installation of new springs and stems. In addition, you'd also be able to install switch stickers or apply lube as well. It's a really nice way to try different switches/springs to potentially find new combinations you might like.
Final count for round 1 was 41 plates from 26 users. I'm going to try to get all invoices sent out before the end of the weekend. As soon as all the invoices are paid I will give the green light for production to start. Thanks everyone for making this a success thus far!
Is this over? Still taking orders?

Just got the invoice but I'm in a keyboard depression right now... :'(
I bought a few parts just need this plate and a phantom pcb to start my build.
However since sheraton / originative still won't ship my GMK keyset after 6 months I really hate looking at my mx boards/parts. I don't even browse this forum that often nowadays.
If any of you want to take my orders it's yours (2 plates).
Strict, I'll still pay my invoice if this creates hassles for you, and I apologize in advance.
Just received an update today that if all goes well I should be able to go pickup the plates sometime this coming week. :thumb:
Also, we had another order cancellation so I now have 3 unclaimed plates. If you want one (or all) of them get in contact with me and I'll get you on the list.

I'm sort of interested, but is there no cheaper method of shipping to Canada?
Any vendors buy some for resell? I'm got into the mechanical keyboard modding just slightly too late for this GB.

Nope, I thought we would have at least one vendor purchase some but my biggest order was GeorgeK's 4 plates.
The mistake doesn't matter to me. Should be just fine for QFR like jd said.
Jd, I've been meaning to ask you what are the extra Stab holes for on space bar? There must be a board that uses a shorter Stab. Leopold?
I picked up the plates from the fabricators today and I've got good news and bad news.
The good news is that the plates all turned out very nicely. They all have clean cut outs and they have nice, smooth edges around the perimeter. The stainless steel is substantially heavier and much more rigid than the aluminum prototype. They all have some scuffing and scratching on the front face to some degree but nothing too serious. I'll be keeping the two worst looking plates for myself and shipping the the best ones to all of you.
The bad is that, due to a miscommunication on my part, the plates are all the v1 design. This means the caps lock and space bar switch holes are not cut to allow for offsets. This is the only design difference between v1 and v2. I think for most people this will make very little difference (if at all). Maybe someone who is more knowledgeable than I can weigh in with more info about what specific keyboards would be affected by this.
I am very sorry for this mistake and if this is a deal breaker for anyone please get in contact with me ASAP and I will refund your entire purchase without hesitation. I'm going to work on getting everything ready to ship over the weekend so if I haven't heard from you by Monday or Tuesday I'm going to assume you're okay with the v1 design and go ahead and ship out your order.
There was some sort of sticker residue on some of the plates that can be seen in the photo below. I went through and cleaned it off all the affected plates with rubbing alcohol.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/B5oj2Yw.jpg)
Glad to hear it weighs more. I want people to work up a sweat when they move my boards.

The difference between the stainless and aluminum plates is remarkable. After comparing the two I don't think I would ever run a GB for aluminum plates, they feel so flimsy and frail while the stainless is very heavy and is almost entirely inflexible. IMO the stainless plate *feels* so much nicer as well, it's hard to describe but they have an almost surgical instrument type feel to them. In comparison, the aluminum just kind of feels like metal.
Be forewarned that making any modifications to these will not be an easy task, they are exceptionally tough. I started working on filing down the stabilizer cutout sections on my two personal plates so I could use costar stabs. I could easily use sandpaper to do this to the aluminum prototype but I ended up using my dremel tool on the stainless.
I'll try to get a few better pictures of the plates tonight while I'm working on getting some packed up.

Can you include some shots showing where you ground the plates for your stabilizers? I guess this will be the project that finally makes me buy my own Dremel.
If you haven't already considered this, for R2 you could offer to file down the costar stab areas for a service fee. If you have, that's cool
EDIT: Changed my comment above to apply to R2 - don't want to pressure strict into any more work than he's already done for this round.
PM'd you bud about the plates - unfortunately I'll have to reduce my order to just 2 as only 2 of the 4 were destined for Filco (or Filco-esque) boards :)
Thanks
George
I'm so excited for these, went ahead and ordered a 100 pack of mx clears from mechanicalkeyboards.com and a thick lube kit. I'll need to trim the PCB pins in order to mount switches on this plate, right? First time for me doing a mod of this kind.

To be honest, I dont think its even necessary. I started filing down my first plate thinking it would be, but out of curiousity I tried the costar stabs on an unmodified plate and they worked just fine. All I had to do was fiddle with the black plate clips a little to get them to fully seat and then they worked just fine. I guess the stainless steel this shop uses is just the right size to work without modification. I didn't try this on all the plates so YMMV but I think they will be okay.
You should see a refund for those two plate shortly. Sorry about any inconvenience!

Yeah, I was going to say, sometimes filing is not even necessary. It really just depends on the thickness of the steel, and how stubborn you are in trying to get the Costar inserts to fit.
I just caught up on this thread.
I indeed wanted to use these plates for my 2 Phantom PCBs. So I have until tomorrow until I decide right?
Is a Round 2 with V2 plates and more options (e.g. 1.5 Mods) confirmed? If not, I will definitely stick to my order :)

I'm still not positive whats in store for round 2 or if it will even happen. This process has been appreciably more tedious and laborious than I had imagined. Considering the effort and time I have invested, shipping materials, fees, etc I'm not convinced round 2 will be worth all the effort. This has really given my a new appreciation for people like Ivan, I have no idea how any one person could run that many GB's one after another all shipping hundreds of products to hundreds of people.
On a more positive note, I have everyones order packaged. I just need to fill out the customs forms for the international orders and I'll be ready to take this 50lb box of steel plates to the poor lady at the shipping dept. where I work :))
Also, here is the imgur album with more pictures as promised - http://imgur.com/a/WLaM9
The only people who would be affected by the offset cuts not being present are those who wanted to use the plate for a Phantom build, and really wanted to use an offset caps lock and/or spacebar. And someone would only really want to do that if they planned to use a set of keycaps from a vintage Cherry Corp keyboard, such as a G80-8113.
Glad to hear they came out nicely, strict. They look amazing!
Also, good guy strict offering refunds if people can't use the plate as made.

Plates will be shipping out tomorrow morning. They would have shipped today but I wanted to make sure everyone was given ample time to contact me if they wanted to cancel/change their order. If I haven't heard from you by that point I'm going to assume you're okay with the v1 plate and go ahead and ship your order. Thanks for all your hard work Strict, I'm very happy this GB turned out successful.
All orders have been shipped
cool. any tracking information?
Just got my plates. Thanks, Strict!PICS!!!
My plates came Thursday or Friday- I just picked up the mail today after being away. They look even better than I expected! Good work and thanks so much for sharing this project with us.Yep, It was just in an envelope and that's all it needed! SS for the win.
I also got mine today. Scuffed but straight with clean cuts. She'll be a beauty once I finish the jdcarpe method of polishing stainless steel.
If anyone's interested, I posted some pics of her: https://plus.google.com/photos/114094639856581800366/albums/6002356721071973169 (https://plus.google.com/photos/114094639856581800366/albums/6002356721071973169)
The thing that strikes me as odd the most, Strict, is that you're nearly a stone's throw away and the post office just now got the plate to me. At least they didn't lose it. Thanks for running the group buy and running it efficiently.
Mine arrived today in the UK
Thanks again strict - they look amazing!
If anyone decides they don't want theirs and wants to sell it, please PM me :)

Glad to hear it! I was more nervous about the international orders than the others since this was my first adventure shipping overseas. If anyone decides they don't want theirs and wants to sell it, please PM me :)
The fabricators cut me a few extra plates (3) and I've already sold all of them except one because it has a minor a cosmetic defect. Its a minor defect and does not affect functionality at all but I didn't want to send it out to someone unsuspecting. There is a grove on the front of the plate deep enough to catch your fingernail on between the F1 and F2 keys. Other than that its a totally normal, usable plate. I'll be more than happy to sell it to you if you're still interested in it.
Yes, thank you! I'll gladly take that.
The back of the plates definitely look worse than the front. You can tell which side is the back by the light brown outlining from the laser, the front wont have that and should be a lot less marked up. Since you will never see the backside once its installed I would only worry about sanding/finishing the front. Shipping USPS cant be hit or miss sometimes. Im glad everything got there regardless!
I'm very glad everyone is happy with their plates so far! Keep those pictures coming, I love seeing the plates in their new homes :thumb:

Did you send all EU orders on the same day? Because GeorgeK received his plates 4 days ago.
Hopefully they will show on tuesday :thumb:
Does anybody know if a plate like this would work with the vortex aluminum case? Or would I need plate adapters?
Does anybody know if a plate like this would work with the vortex aluminum case? Or would I need plate adapters?
It will fit inside the case just fine, but there won't be anything supporting the PCB/Plate to the case. The Vortex case uses a ledge, or shelf, on the front and back inside the case to support the plate by the bends in the original Filco or QFR plate. Since these plates don't have those bends, you will have to use something under the PCB to support it inside the case. A few pieces of modeling clay or sugru will work fine. Or leslieann was selling some 3D printed supports for this purpose.
Where would you put the modeling clay? Between pcb and plate? Or under pcb where it touches the side ledges?

Here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46827.0) is the Leslieann thread complete with a few pictures showing where her 3d printed supports were placed.
I PM'd Leslieann earlier today to see if she had any left.I have an extra one. Margon is putting mine in the Keycool that's in my Sig and I just got another TKL in the mail today. Two of those should be enough. :P
I'm hoping she does because I wasn't even thinking about needing something like that for a Vortex case.
This is probably a shot in the dark at this point, but did anyone buy an extra plate they didn't end up using? Mine ended up being defective. I returned it to strict and he gave me a refund (thanks for that, by the way)

strict mentioned that he would be taking it back to the shop to get a refund from them, so I'm not sure if that would be an option. However, this is quoted verbatim from the message I sent strict:This is probably a shot in the dark at this point, but did anyone buy an extra plate they didn't end up using? Mine ended up being defective. I returned it to strict and he gave me a refund (thanks for that, by the way)
What was wrong with it?
I'd buy it off him if it wasn't too bad
It looks like something messed up the plate during the cutting process, because one of the mounting holes is actually a little stunted. I can't even fit a switch into this mounting hole on the board: http://i.imgur.com/cgFNxoM.jpg
In addition to this, the switch mounts below and to the left of this one appear to be shifted down slightly: http://i.imgur.com/21VZ8IH.jpg
Awesome, thanks. sent you a PM :thumb:This is probably a shot in the dark at this point, but did anyone buy an extra plate they didn't end up using? Mine ended up being defective. I returned it to strict and he gave me a refund (thanks for that, by the way)
You're in luck. I did buy an extra that I am not using. PM me and we'll sort out the details.
Shoot me a PM if you want one.
Looking for a plate as well. I'm in the US. Please let me know if you have one available. Thanks!

If there's enough interest I would consider getting the ball rolling on another group buy.
