Title: Number and Function rows with tactile bump
Post by: F u r u y á on Tue, 06 December 2011, 18:15:41
Who are interested in having some keycaps from Number (row 1) and Function (row 5) rows with the tactile bump (aka tactile nub)?

I was wondering if there were enough interested people so it could be added to R4. I didn't get an answer from 7bit if he can still add new keys to R4 yet (I've just PM'ed him), but I'm posting this already because we're only 10 days from the deadline. In fact, maybe it's too late to add new keys to R4 but well it doesn't hurt to ask.

I know that SP can manufacture those because I already asked them a few months ago.

No, in the stadanrd kits the nub comes in home row only (F and J in case of QWERTY).

What I want is nub in some keys of Number and Function rows.

Oh, I see! Good idea, then. I'm not a fan of tactile bumps at all, but I hope this garners support from others.

I like this idea.  I think I would find it useful to have a nub on the 5, 6, and 7 keys.

How are you not fan of tactile bumps? I don't like to have to look to the keyboard in order to know where my hands are at

Nice. I hope more people shows interest but I'm afraid we're one of the only who want that :frown:

There's no reason my unicomp should have a bump on the F and J keys, as one is on the top row, between the Y and G, and the other is on the bottom between Q and K.

As a result, I've gotten good at ignoring them. I can place m hands where they need to go just fine, and I prefer the "look" of the keyboard without the nubs. Still, if I were into them, I'd prefer they be on more keys.

Fair enough.

In R4 I'll be ordering extra home row keycaps with the center nub. I wish I could get those for Number and Function row :(

Done!

Melissa told me that they make keycaps with nub for Row 1, which comprehends Number and Function rows (in the OP I thought that Function was Row 5). When 7bit make those available in R4 I'll give a update here.

It seems you have been confused with the keyboard row count with the row numbering with respect to the key profile.

top row F1-F12 (R4)
number row (R4)
what follows are: R3, R2 (home row), R1, R1 (where modifiers and space bar are).

R5 keys actually exist and are used on KBTalking RACE. They are a tad taller than  R4 and are rarely used in nowadays' keyboards

Pardon me, I just used the SP convention (http://www.keycapsdirect.com/keycaps-101.php)!

Why does WASD/filco convention have to be different? Thanks for posting this, now I'll probably remember.

No idea. Np.

By the way, you can already order row 1 with center nub in R4. The code is:
Code: [Select]
R1U100C
I asked 7bit to make available R1U100CX for those like me who will order more than ten of it.

hmm... guess different cap manufacture would have different orders of counting the rows... caps from Leopold certainly has it the opposite of SP. But at least R5 is still R5 no matter which way you count it. Interesting that SP keep the R5 as an option.

Yes, I understand your point in your previous message. Under SP logic, I think Row 5 applies when one want Function row to have different profile from other rows.
