Kinesis Advatage key echo
« on: Thu, 27 February 2014, 14:11:11 »
Hey, so I've bought a Kinesis Advantage. I should probably mention that it's my first mechanical keyboard.

I really like the keyboard so far. There's only one thing: the key labeled 'e' produces an echo when I release the key. It's only the 'e' key and also it's right hand counterpart the 'i' (but the 'i' is not as bad as the 'e'). Since all the other keys don't do that I wonder if it's a manufacturing error or if all the Kinesis Advantage do that? Or if all keyboards with cheery browns do that?

It be really great if a few people who have a Kinesis Advantage around could just hit a few keys and report if their 'e' and 'i' sound like that too. Or if they sound any different than the other keys at all.

Thanks

I don't have that on mine. If it isn't new, then I wonder if some shelf lining material will soak up the noise.

Are you able to record a video?

I will try to make a video of it with my smartphone.
Anyways, the keyboard is new. I got it from Amazon UK, I think I might return it and see if I can get one which doesn't do that. Do they take those back?

Under UK law, if within 7 days, they will.  They may be even more generous than that.

if you listen closely you can hear it. in reality it's worse than it sounds in the video.
I pressed some other keys too so you can hear the difference.
So I am the only one who gets this sound?

Somehow the video turned upside down, sorry for that.

tons of options.

exchange for another if possible

if not desolder it and swap it to a less used key

or desolder and openup the switch and swap a spring

that's rip off pricing, 5bucks total for a brown switch... ask around see if there's a mouser.com equivilent for uk, brown cherry switches are like a buck or less, or maybe even the GH buy/sell/trade forums.

course you have to know how to de-solder, and de-soldering is really the only way to do anything.

I really hope I can exchange it. Everything I ever put a soldering iron on is now broken  :))

Anyways. Thanks for the replies everybody.

And btw I don't live in the UK. I just bought it from there cause in a comment somebody said I'd get a US version if I bought it there. Which is not true. But since the difference is only in the key labels I think I can live with it.
