Title: {GB} Clear Switch Covers ($0.20/ea) SOLD OUT
Post by: Shadovved on Mon, 02 February 2015, 08:17:02
Hi all,

EXTRA CLEAR TOPS FOR SALE AT 0.2 EACH. SHIPPING IS $8/100PCS

PM ME WITH YOUR FULL NAME + ADDRESS & QTY PURCHASING.

THANKS!

GB Section
More
This will be for the GB for clear clear switch tops, we definitely cannot hit the MOQ for the PBT sets so I'll shelve it for later, probably because Ivan just ran his PBT GB.

The clear switch covers are from Gateron - what Zeal has in stock currently.

Because my samples were delayed due to the massive logistics jam and holiday due to Chinese New Year in China, I'll have to start the GB first HAHAHA.

Tops are $0.16 each, registered mail shipping will be $10 per box of 100-200 switch tops.

I will be shipping the tops together with hwood's GB for Gateron Switches (I will look at both spreadsheets and adjust shipping accordingly).

To make my life easier, PLEASE TRY TO ORDER IN SETS OF 10, you'll need to submit a form for the GB even if you submitted one for the IC.

Here's the form for the GB: PM ME

Orders close March 12, invoicing begins Friday, 6 March

Thanks!

INTEREST CHECK PORTION
More
This interest check is for PBT blank sets (not BSP) in the dark grey & white (like the normal SP variation, like my IBM model M) (4 colours are available) and clear switch covers (not abostudio)

Price & MOQ is under discussion with the manufacturer, samples are on the way. PBT set includes standard 1.25x + 6x as well as 1.5x 1x + 7x, side stemmed stepped caps lock, centre stemmed caps lock & 1.75x shift (will need to confirm if the stepped is centre stemmed)

But as of now, it's around $31/set of PBT Blanks (hit 200) & $0.2/switch top, final will probably be lower since we can probably hit quite a bit

Shipping (registered mail AATW) estimates to be ~$5 for a set of switch top and ~$10 for caps

Kindly fill out the form to allow a better gauge of the numbers we can hit and I can negotiate better on the other end: http://goo.gl/forms/f3ZiGGs7jF

If there is enough interest, will commence GB when the samples arrive soon (within two weeks hopefully),

If I have taken anyone's picture and you would like me to credit you, kindly PM me.

According to the manufacturer, they are in Cherry profile, but I'll prefer to verify it myself when I get the samples.

Heard the abostudio ones have longevity issues, hopefully this one is more hardy.

Will post more pics when I get them!

....And the usual question, ISO?
It's a blank set so basically only a Enter-key is needed and some additional blanks.

There were actually two last year. The first one was apparently quite brittle but I never had any problems with the second round.

I'm not going to jump on this yet.

Shadovved have you considered this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231402339096?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

If people can get stuff for under $30 shipped anywhere in the world, a group buy at $40 base price is already a non starter especially if there is no certainty of quality.

I'm actually in the middle of discussing with the same manufacturer as what shadovved has presented here. They do not have ISO enter molding.

They do have 6x, 6.25x and 7x spacebars however.

Apparently the manufacturer also doesn't own the tooling.

The 4 colours I was presented are slightly different as well.

The Black isn't shown in the pic, but it's present in shadovved's. I have a darker beige that's not on his pic.

Shall just say that thin PBT and thick ones are vastly different in quality. And I will give a little more insight after the sample arrives........this is an IC, not a GB yet.

AND that the $40 is not fixed, it's still in the midst of discussion and will go down (substantially?) depending on numbers :))

If you're just doing nego now, can you help me ask how much a gigantic crap bag of random blank 1u keycaps will be? If I buy, say, 500 or 1000? As long as there's random or equal numbers of each profile that's ok. I am using labels on matrix layout, so I only need each row of blanks to be the same profile. I want lots of white ones at a cheap price because I want to dye them.

:blank: let me announce here in this IC that I am only looking to buy 1u, so anyone who wants to buy mods and multiwides only please speak up and we can make a deal!

So, essentially you are looking for blank alphas in white? New keyboard project? ;D

I'll help you check it out, basically you want multiple alpha kits but not mods?

TY my dear Shadovved, that is see beh appreciated.

What I want are lots of 1u keys, white PBT, cheap. That allows me to do all kinds of dye jobs after which I'll label the keys myself. No need to be fixed as 'alpha kits' because I am not using conventional layout. I am using matrix layout so about equal numbers of each row profile are better for me. I don't really want lots of the 37-key sets that are so common on Taobao, because that means I don't get enough of the function row/ top row keys with higher profile.

That said, you not botak now meh? Aren't you supposed to be some full time NS slave?

How about I make my request more focused so easier to figure out when you're talking to the PRC makers.

1) To buy 100 1u keys of each row profile.

OR

2) To buy a crap bag of 500-1000 that has the different profiles fairly evenly distributed.

OR

3) To buy 4 sets of 104/108 keys. After which I'll just dye and sell the mods. So far everybody who has bought or received dyed keys from me has been satisfied.

Option 1 is most sought after by me.
Option 2 is what I hope will be offered at a very cheap price, so that my whole family can have fun dyeing.
Option 3 is what I suspect I will end up with if their machinery auto-sorts and packs.

After my samples arrive, I'll be sending a few people who signed up in the IC, and since pwnnarwhal has got some as well, we can investigate the durability.

Eh of course. This is an IC so I set the upper boundary at 1000.

But when I turn this into GB then I'll allow text input responses for qty, but probably still in 100s or 110s to save me from counting one by one.........

If so, I'm in.

That would depend on the plate you are using more than the switch covers.......

You need a plate with notches cut out to allow removal of switch tops without desoldering :thumb:

I got some clear top cover and try custom it with Black 59g, it's very good and smooth. Product from Gateron ( not Abostudio)

Filled out the form.

I am especially interested in the thick PBT sets.

I prefer the grey tones, because blank sets in black / white are readily available.

Also, I'd prefer 1tone sets. At these prices I'd prefer to buy two sets for mix 'n' match. This way people can choose between classic and symmectrical look ("`~" and "\|" keys).

Concerning ISO it would be great if each set contained an extra 1.25 key (as left shift) and 2 extra alphas.

People could use the enter keys from other sets. An Enter key in a different color would be a nice accent on a blank set I think :thumb:

I could ask if that could be purchased separately, the 1.25x and two 1x keys........probably just cost a little more on top of the set??

Currently the full beige/white and the full black sets are looking the most popular.

Could probably run the GB offering 1-tone sets and a select few 2-tone sets that are more popular.......really depends.

What is the purpose of the clear top? For the LED light to shine through the switch? That's purely an aesthetic mod, isn't it?

Probably will have it in both symmetrical layout and non-symmetrical layout, will need to ask the manufacturer to add extra caps.

But if the price goes down further, you guys probably can buy two sets and mix it according to your needs :thumb:

Ya. That's what I was just thinking. I see in the spreadsheet that the price per set is $40, but in the thread it is $31.  I am guessing the $31 number is more current?

Thanks for doing this BTW. I forgot to mention that initially. I have much love for people with the gonads to run GBs. :)

Same here, I've been wanting to try out some cherry profile-like PBT blank black keys. Depending on how this goes I might jump on board for a set; the price is very attractive. I have posted a link to this group buy on a foreign forum to try and raise interest.

Question: is the black a true black or a dark grey (e.g. Vortex)?

From the picture it looks a shade lighter than true black black. Might be because of the surface? I'll ask the manufacturer.

Feel free to repost and raise interest, if it's your own country you can always collate orders ;D

We'll see what the manufacturer says then.

you really need to confirm whether Cherry or OEM profile. These look like Cherry to me.

Based from the pictures, I'm almost certain this is made from the same factory as IMSTO keycaps.

So they should be cherry profile and the quality should be good too.

Hm, imsto.......not bad. I never used imsto's PBT sets before.

If they are actually same source than IMSTO the price is great. Do you have a close up picture of the caps?

Eh, no. When the sample arrives then I can get some close-ups of my own.

Probably can compare with those from swill then.

If they are thick PBT in Cherry profile this was a sweet deal.

Would your actual order be higher than 1000? Since that's the max in the IC.

I think he is asking how many more he would need to bring the price down more.  How many more need to be ordered for us to hit the next major price break?

If the price for the covers gets down, this will be a deal everyone at GH should get. Either, if people want the clear covers for a current project, or they can keep them in stock just in case they need them in the future. I am waiting for a kit now, that I will not assembly until I get these clear covers.

Well not everyone wants to build keyboards themselves. Plus perhaps they don't like the clear look.

Yeah right, maybe the hundreds of DIY keyboard kits that have been sold at GH and now at MD have been all bought by the same dozen of crazy fellows that like to build their own boards.

Does anyone know the brand and quality of these clear switch tops?  I've had an abostudio pop while pulling the keycap off the stem and the stem just came straight out of the
switch.  Now that I'm using black stems, I noticed they aren't as tight as clear stems and I don't have the issue, but that is pretty disappointing.  I've never had a Nixdorf switch
in hand, but I assume the demand for them is partially because the plastic quality is much better.

+1 for this question. I have read people reporting some brittle tops that can be easily break, and others that are made of ABS whose strength is higher.

This  (http://www.makeitfrom.com/compare/Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene-ABS/Polyamide-PA-Nylon-11/)reference compare ABS with Polyamide (Pa + Nylon). Poly elastic module is lower than that of the ABS, .4-1.4 vs 1.7-2.8GPa. Meaning Poly is a little more fragile than ABS. However, strength of Poly per weight is just a bit lower than that of ABS. Thus, differences should not be that important, only real life testing would tell.

Probably they have to custom. But that could be an option for v2, after we have built a relationship with the manufacturer.

It does seem that with a lot of GB/IC (and I've only been here 5 minutes) the question of ISO is raised, there seems to be a demand for it and and it gets overlooked even on blank keys. Maybe switching standard is the way to go, but seems a shame. Hey Shadovved, how many sets are to be produced by GMK to achieve $31 a set?

This is not GMK, this is thick pbt. You would probably need about a million sets to get a 31$ price point for a GMK set.

This is not GMK, tdhis is thick pbt. You would probably need about a million sets to get a 31$ price point for a GMK set.

Go ANSI

Seriously, trolls aside, I did it and I don't regret. You have so many keycaps choices now and it is not that hard to accommodate as I would have thought at first.

I got confused, substitute "GMK" for "the company what makes thick plastic PBT keys"  :thumb:

I'll charge you guys around 1 week before the end date, so I can reduce the delay for the turnaround time. And this way you guys can have slightly more time to pay.

It could, but this price is from the projected numbers from the IC + around 20%.

If we exceed the number by really a lot, we could push it down slightly (it's in cents already)

It is stupidly simple. You need a small flathead screwdriver, and a little bit of length to your fingernails, and thats it, as long as the switches are out of the board. If your board supports switch top removal, I do it by sticking the flathead and pushing out, and lifting up each side.

I've been waiting for another source of clear switch tops. Interested!

Heard the abostudio ones have longevity issues, hopefully this one is more hardy.

Will post more pics when I get them!

They're total ****.

I've removed countless keycaps with no issues. Used Abostudios clear covers, and on a single board, 2 keys sheared clear from the top while removing a key. Both keys had to be desoldered/resoldered.

I was extremely careful in removing and was extremely slow in wiggling the keys off, didn't matter though.

They will be here within a day or two. They actually went from New Jersey, to New York, which is kind of weird. I hadn't bothered inquiring about the tracking info, but they shipped from China on the 7th, and I got the tracking number a day or two ago. I am happy I ordered before they all took a break.

Surprised to see so much has changed in the few days since I was last here.

Can I check with you the following:

1) what is the MOQ of the PBT sets?
2) how many more sets do we need to buy to reach MOQ? EG if it's just 10 sets I can try helping everyone by buying the lot
3) is it possible to buy the crap bags still even if PBT moq is not met? Eg I could buy that 1000 1u bag, and for what price then?

It'll ship together with the gateron switch GB. Looking at end-March shipping out, may be slightly longer if I take longer to pack, I'll ship as I go.

1,2) We need at least 160 more sets, we have around 90 now.
3) I have PMed you on this matter before. Yes, you can buy a thousand loose keys even without the GB. However, nothing has changed since our last discussion, the price for the crap bag remains as it is, there's nothing I can do to help you if you think it's too expensive.........

Yeap, I dropped the PBT caps due to low interest, possible because a GB just ended.

And no, I doubt it'll kill me to sort some switches, it's gonna take more than that :))

I might take a little longer to sort all packages if the volume is overwhelming, but I'll ship as I go.

I read in someone's review of the gateron switches that the switch top fits a little more snug on the bottom half that traditional cherry ones. Because of this I think it was mentioned that switch stickers are irrelevant.  Is this also the case with these? This looks to be a different material that the stock gateron switches.

Edit: oh, one other question. What is the moq for the next price break?

Because of this I think it was mentioned that switch stickers are irrelevant.  Is this also the case with these? This looks to be a different material that the stock gateron switches.

Edit: oh, one other question. What is the moq for the next price break?

They share the same molds, thus, their tolerances are the same.

Scale economy is the reference, a plastic molding company does not pay for redundant tooling.

OK. They have different logos on them, so I would have assumed different molds. My experience with the clear tops is that they definitely have a different fit, tighter and narrower clearance. I thought reading up on the mold sourcing might inform me about the different experience I'm having with them.

The different logo may be due to an insert in each cavity for part branding -a common practice in small parts injection-, or an entire different mold. The differences in tolerances may be related with part's contractions due to different material molded using the same tooling.

The 0.16 is according to numbers I got from the IC, which is around 17k. We currently have around 9k. So there are still quite some people who have not ordered.

Prices might be slightly adjusted if we don't have at least 15k, that's why I'm asking those who have submitted in the IC for switch tops to submit their entry for the GB too :(

Right, I've found that the clear tops have zero wobble as well (I previously commented in the thread you linked). I was just intrigued by Ideus's claim that both Gateron and Cherry share the same production molds despite the fit and tolerance differences I have experienced with the Gateron tops. Given his matter of fact tone in his response to swill, I thought he might have some further information.

I did encounter some minor issues with the fit of these tops, but nothing a little dremelling couldn't fix. Overall, I think they are really nice and am looking forward to hearing other's opinions one they receive them.

Just for the records: I did not mention Cherry ever. Gateron transparent tops may use the same molds than those translucent tops, the ones used in Gateron switches. Same factory, same molds for the same part made of different materials, transparent and translucent. Cherry factory is miles far from Gateron's.

Around there yes, 200 tops, but probably not 200 switches, since switches weigh more.

Any idea how close we are to reaching the price for the GB? Also, if it doesn't reach that price, what price would it be? Or, will Gateron not consider an order less than a certain number of units.

Well, the housings of stock gaterons are a milky clear/white, these are completely clear and made out of a somewhat different material.

Only black and clear switches are at sixteen cents a piece now. However the plastic of these tops is transparent, while the plastic of the switches is translucent. But of course, they look similar, and if you are looking for full switches the other GB is for you. However, if you need some extra tops to install on switches you already have, Cherry included, to give them a different look this may interest you. Of course you may buy full switches to swap their tops to other switches, but you will have switch internals and bottoms left over, so at certain point you will need some tops for them.

well, it would depend, but knowing the smoothness of the plastic in gateron switches, I'm sure these will be the same or similar smoothness

Consensus is one thing we are not very good at GH. Particularly, when most people have not tried Gateron switches yet. However, many have realized the current GB on Gaterons is a good chance to do it, resulting in more than 50,000 units already ordered; you can join, or let it pass. But, if you want to compare Gaterons with other switches there are a few other threads on that, already. If not, you could open a thread on it; this one is to inform about Cover's GB terms and conditions and to discuss them, so we try to keep it on topic.

This answer seems really off-topic.

To answer your question Karura, these ones are made of a better plastic that doesn't crack easily, so the switch covers are much stronger. There have also been reports that they fit the switch tighter, resulting in less side-to-side contact and thus stickers are not required.

Shadovved do you still need people to help you reach MOQ?

I need zero clear covers, but if you need someone to buy up to 1000 to meet MOQ I will consider helping as a Buyer/Seller of Last Resort.

Also a reminder, I want to get that 1000 blank bag and pay you in cash.

Final grouse: I don’t like it when so many people pop up right after a GB is finished, and ask to buy. Am starting to figure that some people didn’t forget; they deliberately forgot, so that they don’t have to risk any cash if GB fails and organizer runs off. Maybe this whole thing about BSLR selling stuff to people at GB price is not such a good idea.

We have it the qty required for $0.16 per already YAY! I will probably round off the order to a nice number when the GB ends so it's easier for them too, so I'll definitely have a tiny bit of extras, just in case anything goes wrong.

And PM me regarding your PBT thingy again.

Haven't we discussed this before like 10 times?  OK, I'm PMing AND posting this again to remind you about PBT 1000 bag...

Go ahead and buy extras to round up; if you have enough when I go over and collect I'll buy 100 or whatever number you find convenient. All that talk is making me curious and I don't mind buying some just to play play.

Not going to turn this into a formal order so it gives you the freedom not to sell to me if you don't have extras. MY personal view is that most GBs can buy extra because always these jokers pop out of the woodwork and ask to buy after they see that GB organizer hasn't run away with the money.

So I've received an invoice saying GClears, I'm thinking those are for the clear switches. I'm not sure if I've placed an order for this too.

1) Is it possible to check if I've placed an order for this? I sort of remember doing it but maybe I'm wrong and the invoice is only for the switches.
2) If I haven't ordered the switch tops, is it possible to combine shipping even after I've paid the invoice for the switches?
3) Should I just go ahead and pay the current invoice I have now?

Thanks

Just really confused, Considering i was invoiced less shipping per 300 switches, VS 250 switch tops and i assumed they were to be combined to save money, which is half the drawcard of these two GB being run together.

P.S. Shadovved is OK and rumors of his demise from carrying everything up to his place on the fourth floor are greatly exaggerated.

P.P.S. There's more that still has to be unloaded from the car.

Bummed out that your Gateron clear caps aren't as, well, clear as abostudio caps? There's an inexpensive fix from the Plastic Modeling world. Oldpharts know it as 'Future'; a few years back it was rebranded as 'Pledge Floor Care with Future Shine'. What it is, is a liquid acrylic; dipping clear plastic parts in it (or airbrushing, or even handbrushing; the stuff self-levels) fills in tiny pits, scratches, and imperfections. The end result?

The left side is stock, the right side dipped once and let dry for 30 minutes. You could do two dips, giving at least four hours cure time (depending on temp and humidity) if you need to. I haven't noticed any catching or binding of the plunger; if you're concerned, a quick swipe around the plunger opening with a cotton or foam swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol will strip the coating. Best of all, it's cheap - it sells for $6/Qt in the US, which is more than enough for thousands of switch covers (or plastic models; I've used less than 10% of a bottle I bought in 2003), but if you know anyone who regularly builds plastic models, odds are they already have some you could mooch off of them borrow.

That quite the improvement, definitely gonna try it out - thanks!

I really like these clear tops. Besides looking good, its easier to install 2x3x4 LEDs w/ SIP sockets. I used to cut the LEDs just under the notches, so they wouldn't sit loose. This way, installing the LEDs was a PITA! With these abostudio tops, its possible to cut the LEDs above the notches without having it move when seated.

Sorry, these are abostudio instead of Gateron.

No I didn't, shadovved ran a GB for Gateron switch tops, not abostudio, unless Freechemicals is posting about abostudio switch tops in the gateron switch tops thread

They aren't as crystal clear as abostudio, but that can be fixed with the Pledge Future Shine. These are a lot better, as they are more flexible and fit better. The abostudio tops are more rigid and are prone to breaking a lot easier.

Hey Shadovved! Just got my second round of switch covers yesterday and I would like to say thank you  :thumb:
I haven't been the best in making this a smooth transaction. I made a couple modifications to my order and then didn't pay for the second shipment of covers right away.  :-[ You beared with me the whole time though. Keep up the good work and I wish you the best with all the rest of the GB's that you're a part of  :D

I made some pics a few pages back:
I believe this needs to be here:
(http://i.imgur.com/fvNc83gl.jpg) (http://imgur.com/fvNc83g)
Left to right: AboStudio (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46446.0) Clear tops (R2), Gateron clear switch covers, Standard Gateron tops

And Orgell_Evaan (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=68356.msg1750286#msg1750286) figured out a way to make them almost as clear as the old arbostudio ones.

I don't think so, since it is offered as "Gateron Clear Switch Tops".

Thats the standard price for clear switch tops outside of GBs
If it is really only the top, the price is high since whole cherry MX switches costs the same (http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=653).

Same for Techkeys (http://techkeys.us/collections/accessories/products/clear-mx-switch-cover). It is the price we pay for being late to a groupbuy.
And you are comparing separate switch covers with bulk switches. Separate Cherry switches cost $1.50 (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keyboard-parts/cherry-mx-red-keyswitch-mx1a-l1nn-linear.html).

I'm interested in 110 pack and there is not quantity discount for tops as is for switches. Who buys only one top?
