Keyboard of the YEAR 2015 - RESULTS - E3E IS OUR WINNER!
« on: Thu, 21 May 2015, 09:58:54 »
KEYBOARD OF THE YEAR IS HERE. The poll is up, I will put the poll up for TEN DAYS so the maximum amount of people can get a chance to vote. You also have THREE VOTES to use, so vote for your top THREE. You don't have to, it is up to you :)

So, in ascending order:

December's winner was Lastpilot's GON with white POM keycaps.

The winner for January was Zeal's Gateron build, with more POM caps.

In February, DrHubblePhD came out on top with his re-assembled Hyper Grey 360 Corsa

March's vote caused a stir, but the decided winner was Yoe's 60% custom Alps build

April's winner was Snoopy's monolithic Kishsaver

May saw Metalliqaz's Project Zeta a runaway winner with 70% of the vote

June's favourite was Bazh's custom build, Codename: Weaven

July saw ghostjuggernaut's 356CL DGE run away with the prize

In August, the Zealios were revealed, and Zeal proceeded to win in a close race with his Duck Viper

September's winner was Yoe yet again, with another Alps build, this time with a poured, granite effect case

October saw Nubbinator's woodworking skills take him to victory against tough competition

November's winner was E3E with his custom Duck Eagle, with hot swappable alps switches!

So I wasn't far off the start date... I have decided that the winners of each month will get a free KOTM calendar if I do get them made :) Of course Zeal and Yoe wont get two, unless they ask for them of course...

Exactly! I've been staring at this thing for a few minutes and I really don't know who to pick. It's like the last month's poll but 10x more difficult.

With such a huge list, would it be beneficial to allow people to vote for their top 3 boards? I think that might make it a bit more interesting.

Yeah, I was thinking it would dilute the votes a bit. Good idea houff  :thumb:

I have reset all the votes back to ZERO ladies and gents, so please vote for your TOP THREE. There may have to be a tie breaker... I don't know what it will be... I guess I have ten days to decide.

Sent in my vote as well. They're all such great boards it was difficult to choose only three. It's kind of hard choosing between a fantastic board such as 356CL DGE and 360c and then the creativity and hard work put into E3E's, Bazh's, etc.

So this is the icing on the... Well, we already used a **** ton of icing. I had the ending time plastered in my mind today, haha. I really didn't expect to win this. Thanks guys! It means a ton, but there were some seriously amazing builds this year that had a lot of love put into them.

I can't wait to see the calandar showcasing all these amazing builds :D

Congratulations and well done, E3E :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I guess 2015 will be known at the 60% board year.  More and more users here are going with them.  I guess it's a form factor thing, but I still prefer the standard layout overall.  Maybe it's just me, but I feel that the 60% form factor is more in tune to Mac users than PC users too.

It's a trend but I wonder if the full-size keyboard will come back.  I do like having the function row above the numbers and having a full numeric keypad as well as the arrows.  About the minimum I will go is SSK.

Now, if the 60% does continue, (and it's not a bad thing) I would like to see indicators letting you know what layer you are on as you are using it.  This would seriously eliminate error, and make things less complicated in my opinion.

Maybe by the year 2017, there will be less and less demand for a real keyboard, and people will be using those virtual keyboards to the point of bringing a true keyboard to extinction.  I really don't want to see that happen.

"What do you mean, you have to use your hands for this?"

Oh man.

Oh man.
The downward size trend is definitely here for now, but depending on what task is needing to be done, the fulls-size may come back.  They really won't ever die with those that have to deal with numbers constantly and that's why they'll always still be a staple in businesses.  And business purchases outnumber enthusiast purchases probably 100 or 1000:1 if not more.

The problem is that fullsize boards with everything to the right of the alphas is a terribly un-ergonomic layout for anyone that uses a mouse with their right hand. My Model F is probably my favorite board to type on, but I have to find alternatives to using a traditional mouse with my right hand else I'll need shoulder surgery in the future.

I'd love to see more standalone numpads and/or attached ones to the left of the alphas.

But this is more of an ergonomics issue than anything else.  I actually place my trackball in front of the numeric keypad at times.  This way, I don't have to worry about the reach.  I also learn every keyboard shortcut there is, so I'm just mousing a lot, lot less.  Like on this post--Alt-s and it's posted!

Nice! I've been thinking of getting a trackball to put in front of my larger keyboards like that, seems like a great idea. Getting a little off-topic now, but good stuff to consider!
