[IC] Switch Top Removal Tool - PAUSED
« on: Mon, 24 October 2016, 02:01:06 »
Mechanicalkeyboard.com sells a tool that makes it easy to open the tops of your key switches.

Shipping from them outside the US is fairly costly, which is why I consider doing a group buy, to cut costs.

I have previously bought a batch of 20 and sold these successfully over on /r/mechmarket. In the previous batch, cost ended up being €15 including VAT and non-tracked shipping in Europe. Shipping outside EU is €2 more. Cost for this round will hopefully be a little lower. I am also in talks with the super nice people from mk.com to see if we can get a discount.

Maximum allowed tools would be 4, so they all fit in a bubble mailer and make my life easy.

The interest check definitely showed me there's a high demand for this. However, I am currently in between two moves and back at my parents, which made me realize that if I do a GB now, I couldn't pull it off successfully.

I will probably revisit this early next year and make it happen then.

I'm in, just one question: If you say "One" tool is that a single one or a pair? Because as I understand it, you always need a pair to open the switch, right?

They come in pairs, the two of them are considered "one". I know, it's confusing :p

@Freilicht I guess noone would sell you one metal piece alone, since you need two of them. Well, theoretically you could, but that would be cumbersome.

@Bramm Just filled the order form ...  :thumb:

Ok great, filled out the form! Pretty cool that you make this happen. The need for these just emerged last week or so, so it's perfect timing :D

If your plate allows opening of switch tops, they work on those too, but as said, your plate needs to allow it. Most custom plates allow this, however OEM plates often don't (like WASD, DAS, Varmilo etc..).

yeah those are the same switches - the difference would be if the switch plate is above or below covering the top part of the switch.

A lot of high-end (mostly Korean) custom boards do als not allow for this, and tbh. I've never seen any OEM board that supports switch top removal.

On another note, I bought one of those tools from his first run (if you could call it that) and had a great experience with both the product and the seller, I can definitely recommend it!

I'm down. Their shipping is ridiculous going to Canada. Hopefully it won't be an arm and a leg

Just a reminder that their shipping on very small orders is very buggy, if you order something that fits into a bubblemailer (springs, stabs, etc.) and it shows a ridiculous price under "calculate shipping" you should just shoot them an e-mail and they will get you their best price. This comment is not meant to keep you from joining this GB, but to clear things up, as I was also slightly annoyed by their strange shipping prices.

Up to now have been using the wire from a binder clip, bend into shape with pliers. Totally in for a couple pairs of these though!

Better do it right than force it now, thank you for being honest.

I can certainly wait for a bit, good luck moving!
