Cherry profile vs Ducky profile keycaps?
« on: Mon, 23 February 2015, 00:27:18 »
I have a Ducky 9008G2 Pro board with PBT dye subs and I am looking to mix up some of the grey keys I have, with some blue ones. Similar to the grey/blue set Ducky offers. I found this http://imsto.cn/index.php?route=product/product&path=62&product_id=62 which seems promising, but they seem a bit pricey and are Cherry profile. How would the Cherry profile mix with my Duckys profile? I have read that my keys are OEM and that the Cherry profile is much lower...

If this isn't the way to go, where could I buy a Ducky replacement set in the PBT dye-subs? Every where I am seeing seems to sell PBT keys in the Cherry profile. I would appreciate anyone help or input! Thank you

Ducky profile is OEM profile.  I recommend keeping the keyboard in a uniform profile because mixing different profile will give you a really strange feel while typing especially if you are mixing the alpha keys.  Mixing profile in function row doesn't really matter though.  mechanicalkeyboard.com have some Ducky PBT dyesub keycaps for sale.

Here you can see the differences in heights on those rows:

Feels better to change out all the caps to the same profile, although the F row doesn't really matter.

Ducky PBT sets seem to be quite rare at the moment, all the usual places to buy them seem to be out of stock and they're almost the only OEM PBT maker.

IIRC, these are OEM profile, but also quite expensive, the blue is darker and they may not match exactly: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=773

Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

You don't want to mix Cherry and OEM profiles.  Here's what they look like side by side where you can clearly see the differences.

Oobly, you beat me to it. >:D  LOL!  :))  You took that pic I posted in a thread earlier and re-posted it here while I was editing the pic and typing my reply.

Anyways, The Ducky blue/grey two-tone PBT dyesubs have been hard to find lately, Ducky may have discontinued making them.

However Zeal has a great looking set of Ducky two-tone "CCnG" PBT dyesubs in stock right now, but they may not be available much longer.

Check them out:  http://zealpc.net/collections/keycap-sets/products/ducky-pbt-keycaps

Wow, great responses everyone and thank you for the information. I can see from the photos there is a huge difference between OEM and Cherry profiles! I don’t think I want to go the route of mixing them up. Indeed, from looking around it appears nearly everyone is out of the Ducky PBT keys (in the colors I want like the light blue). The double-shot white and blue ones on Mech Keyboards site looked really cool, but those are sold out! ugh

I suppose I will stay on the lookout. It doesn’t have to be Ducky, but preferably the OEM profiles for the closest match.

Hmm, how about this? http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/new-model-keycool-108-mechanical-keyboard-black-cherry-mx-clear-switches-gaming-full-size-customized-unique/818123_1601772669.html

Does anyone have any experience with Keycool? I could use the second keyboard at work and take the blue keys off of this one for use at home maybe

....

Sorry, hope it's okay that I linked your image.

That aliexpress offer is a bit... weird. The Keycool boards are nice, but they stopped using Cherry MX switches and changed to Kailh recently. The offer doesn't say which colour combination keycaps it comes with (it shows blue mods / grey alphas in some pics, grey mods / blue alphas in others) or which switch type it somes with... fishy. The Keycool caps are OEM profile, though.

Nah, its OK.  It's actually not mine, it came from; jacobolus.

This is the very informative thread it came from, if you want to see many more profiles compared.

By the way I wouldn't order those caps you posted.  Too sketchy!

If you're not hung up on blue caps I'd suggest checking out the Ctrl.Alt x GMK Hyperfuse Group Buy.  They're top shelf quality and they look amazing!

^ Good point on that aliexpress keyboard. It does seem risky and I am not sure I trust it. I also read a lot of horror stories about AliExpress!

@Keyzus, thank you for that recommendation and indeed that is a cool key set! Although it's nice, I am not into the purple much though. I may order up the set from Imsto.cn that I had in my first post. I talked to someone at Mechanical Keyboards that highly recommended their PBT keysets and after looking at some prices around the net, I don’t think that’s such a high price after all!

Speaking of group buys though, check this one out!!: https://www.keychatter.com/2015/02/19/triumph-adler-gmk-group-buy-vote-on-massdrop-for-your-chance-to-own-the-rarest-and-sexiest-cherry-mx-keycap-set-ever/ It will be a bad a$$ remake of an old school mechanical set , the Triumph Adler Dario 286. It is currently on MassDrop accumulating some interest and will be a group buy soon. It looks great, although I hope it's not too much money....

Oh, you mean this one? https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=65724.0

 ;)

It's a nice colourway and will be produced by GMK. They make the best quality thick doubleshot ABS keycaps available, IMO. I have the GMK Dolch set and it's top notch. They're Cherry profile.

haha, that's the one! I will definitely be keeping my eye on it.

In the meantime, I am very excited to get my PBT dye-subs with the red Hangul lettering  :D I really have no use for Korean characters on my keys, but I think it looks very cool on the blue. It was on MassDrop not long ago: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/imsto-pbt-keycaps-with-hangul?mode=guest_open
