Destroyed one switch on my Poker 2 when trying to yank a jelly POM key. The whole switch comes out and I trashed the keyboard right away knowing I won't even try to fix it.You trashed a whole keyboard because 1 switch popped off? mate you got a deep pocket
I impulse bought a HHKB while I was in Tokyo, because I wanted to try topre and it was very cheap.
I brought it to work and immediately didn't like the feel of the switches, but kept on using it because of the investment and the status it has here. Even dental band modded it.
I stopped using it as my daily driver because of the nature of my work (Visual Studio based programming), but it's now my favourite board. I find myself taking it out of my drawer just to press the keys. The thing is though, I don't know if I truly love it, or I've somehow managed to deeply brainwash myself into liking it over time...
I buy keyboards just to try, then just pile them up.You and me both, brother, you and me both.

I ruined a perfectly good IBM Model M2 when I was a kid by spilling coffee on it and trying to disassemble it to "fix it"

I'm international though. Shipping will be at least $20-40. Maybe not worth it for you?

This reminds me of Clackvent. Nostalgia is, in my mind, an indication that I'm logged out of geekhack. I made it my theme for HoffmanClackster so I could tell the two accounts apart during Clackvent, but many times only confused myself thinking I was logged out.
That's not a confession but whatever.
Something NJBair said....Someone had to be #1Moi?World's #1 Model M fan.
That scares me!

Just switched to austere for the same reason... prefer orange but this blends in a lot better.
I've got zero DIY skills :(
Pretty much the only thing I'm good at is throwing money at things.
After paying $100 for a blue alps board on reddit (probably shot my offer way too high to the guy too!), my first alps board ever, I killed it by poking around in the circuitry when it was plugged in, somehow frying the controller. Changed capcitors, but nothing worked. I felt pretty stupid.
I bought the worldspawn atreus prototype, built it with in switch diodes and jailhouse blues, put it all together and never programmed it because it didn't like the staggered column layout.Don't feel bad. I can't use non-staggered or column staggered designs, either. There is a reason keyboards largely haven't changed in many decades.
I can barely use my Planck, but I may change the layout to something like Dvorak or colemack so that I don't have to compensate for the lack of stagger.

But do the switches still work? I mean if it's not standard BAE and 1u backspace, save that to make another alps board... I'd love to have a blue alps board of any kind
I accidentally left my Hakko FR-300 (desoldering gun) on and hot, sitting on the edge of my table, for over a week... I only realized it was on because I happened to see the power LED blinking (I don't even know what that means but it can't be good)...

Oh gawd. I get scared over the idea of forgetting about my soldering idea for a day, but a week... Damn! Good thing nothing got set ablaze! :-X I think the worst thing that happened with me is leaving a soldering station while taking a two hour nap and I freaked a little when I woke up and noticed it on.

accidentally broke off a large chuck of plastic when taking apart my dolch pac, so I threw the pc away. Kept the caps, sold the switches, the case has been lying around for so long, and I don't think anyone wants itOffer it up in the free stuff thread. Maybe someone there has a Dolch with a cracked or discolored case. Just ask them to pay the shipping.

I'm starting to post in the new members forum. Not because I'm trying to be welcoming, but b/c I don't want demik corrupting them w/ his HHKB nonsense.Between his HHKB propaganda and your Alps, all our MX noobs are gonna get scared off.

I've been reading a little too much about mech keyboards the last few months! I can solder fairly well, so now I've been staring at pcb's a little too much. :)
That's cool. You should get an MX or Alps keyboard so you can put your soldering skills to work. You can change out switches at your leisure. You can't do that with a Topre keyboard.
My wife thinks anyone's crazy who has more than one KB. So now that I have several of them, she considers me several times crazier than normal. Any excuse to avoid me, I guess.

I hate this argument. Not all women have multiple closets full of shoes. Or handbags, or piles of makeup. If you were to use this style of argument to justify purchases, it should be to ask the wife how she considered her hobby, whatever that may be. Maybe she collects pottery, or baseball cards. Maybe she builds computers, or likes antiquing. It isn't always about frigging shoes. I have been laughed at for bringing in an M to an attorney's office and our accountant's office. I just shrug it off since the ignorant behave ignorantly.Do you work in a closed door office with sound proof walls? Cause even I think a model M is too loud for open office use, and I've used MX Blues for extended amounts of time. If you work in your own office though, that is different. Then I'd agree with that idgaf attitude.

I have so many keyboards I don't know what to do with them all xD .
I have so many keyboards I don't know what to do with them all xD .You just need to start collecting the vintage computers that the keyboards came with--problem solved!
I cannot move from one room to another in my house without shifting at least one box of keyboards xD . Most of them are the same models though, I have a while box full of AT102Ws for instance, a box of G80-3000s and several boxes of G81-8000s. So I can't even make a lot of reviews out of them because they're all the same xD .I have so many keyboards I don't know what to do with them all xD .You just need to start collecting the vintage computers that the keyboards came with--problem solved!
Why so many of the same? Unless you just love them of course. ;)I cannot move from one room to another in my house without shifting at least one box of keyboards xD . almost all the corner on my 456 gt are dented, the cable is almost completely broken, one of the screw to hold the brass weights is missing.
I barely buy them, I just get them from recycling centres. But often they come in big batches - you know, a whole office that gets cleaned out, all using the same boards. Often I either sell the extras or dismantle some for spare parts, but I can't sell AT101s or (cableless) G81s or some others for any amount of money worth my time, even IF I could find the boxes to ship them in. It's not even worth the time to desolder/dismount all the thousands of switches on boards as common as those, and I can't give enough away to my friends and family xD . I genuinely don't know what to do with many of them. Why so many of the same? Having a bunch of working computers fully set up is a tremendous amount of space--if my parents didn't have such a large attic, I think most of my Ms would just be in a pile. I just noticed in the last two weeks that I have 3 rubberdome Ms not even connected to anything--gotta change that. But then I have to get more computers working.
Let's see those customs in the making stuff together section! My wife thinks anyone's crazy who has more than one KB. So now that I have several of them, she considers me several times crazier than normal. Any excuse to avoid me, I guess.
My wife owns Filco Metallic Blue 104 with MX Blues that I gave her couple years ago. She recently bought herself a CM Storm Quickfire XT with MX Browns for the office because her colleagues were complaining about the MX Blues being too noisy. She doesn't like the IBMs for some reason, totally prefers MX Blues above all :)
Still she thinks I'm crazy having half of basement full of vintage keyboards, plenty of keyboards in my office room which I regularly rotate, and a mini custom keyboard factory which I run as a hobby in my workshop :D
The vast majority of my Cherry boards are black - ironically the Cherry switch I like least. I had no idea people liked the stems though Oo . Might get a desoldering gun actually, I didn't know such a thing existed.I barely buy them, I just get them from recycling centres. I would buy a desoldering gun to save a lot of time or just take of the cherry tops and sell the stems. People want clear stems most of the time.

In a similar vein, I'm about to get a paycheck, and proceed to spend the entire thing on a big piece of plastic with some circuits in it, a piece of aluminum, and a bigger piece of aluminum.

confession: i bought a ttesports meka with mx blacks for the metal switchplate so i can do an modified oobly build, bought some gatheron browns after liking the browns in my Das ultimate silent. I then took the keyboard to work and tried it out for like a week. I like blacks more it seems... But i cant use them in the build because they are pcb mounted -_-'
confession 2: this post is part of my elaborate scheme to get enough posts to be allowed to on the classifieds thread and try to trade the blacks for something else. But ssshhhhhh dont tell anyone

No, if I were calling Rowdy (whom I like) a misogynistic pig I would use those words. What I'm saying is that it happens time and time again around here that guys will justify their purchases by saying "how many shoes does she own". See, the trouble is that Rowdy (in this case) doesn't know the wife. He is making a generalization. Which I find annoying af, because this one in particular isn't any truer for men then it is for women. You don't have to look far, even on this very site, to see men who spend some serious money on shoes.I hate this argument. Not all women have multiple closets full of shoes. Why do you hate this argument? I thought it was funny. How many pairs of shoes has she?Hah, I have far more keyboards and shoes than my wife. I really need to get rid of some junk...And I don't play basketball, yet I get asked daily. Stereotypes aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
6'5" (196cm) here. Get this too often.
short person: You must play basketball!
me: You must be a jockey!
*silence*
6'6" [6'7"?] (202cm) here...I usually get this at urinals (clubs/bars etc.):
[ShorterPerson]: dude, you should totally come play in my football/basketball team...would pay well at the senior level
[Me]: Nah, i'm too lazy...(endostoro)

One day I'll be in the states and will attend a con so that we can get an irl comparison shot :thumb:

@Glenmael, I'm already hitting door frames, lol. :)) Also, if your 202cm is accurate (and 6'6" a guess), then you're really almost as tall as me anyway. That's really really close to being 6'8". ;D

I dunno :( I've been away from my PC and more than one keyboard for so long, I think I am going a little bit crazy... They feel like MX Greys a little bit, just with a bit less of a bump... I'm still going to get rid of them for ergo clears, but they aren't horrendous.
TIL katushkin enjoys typing on soggy newspaper. :P
I hope you can find redemption soon, brother. :-*

I make more typos with mechanicals than I ever have with my old scissor switch laptop keybords. That might also be because an increased state of DGAF due to my right thumb being janked up and requiring me to stay off of it.
I bought a kc60 from someone and didn't realize there were LEDs so I couldn't easily swap the switches in them with the zealios I ordered. Didn't have a soldering iron so i bought one. but i was too excited for the zealios so I just used some needle nose pliers and yanked out the LEDs as carefully as one could. :-X :blank: :blank: :blank:

No, if I were calling Rowdy (whom I like) a misogynistic pig I would use those words. What I'm saying is that it happens time and time again around here that guys will justify their purchases by saying "how many shoes does she own". See, the trouble is that Rowdy (in this case) doesn't know the wife. He is making a generalization. Which I find annoying af, because this one in particular isn't any truer for men then it is for women. You don't have to look far, even on this very site, to see men who spend some serious money on shoes.I hate this argument. Not all women have multiple closets full of shoes. We are not all mindless automatons out searching for the next pair of Louis Vuitton's, cursing our husbands for wasting our shoe money on his stupid keyboards. My wife thinks anyone's crazy who has more than one KB. So now that I have several of them, she considers me several times crazier than normal. Any excuse to avoid me, I guess.
How many pairs of shoes has she?
Why do you hate this argument? Ofc its wrong to presume that ALL women collect shoes, it was a simple question which in most cases are totally true, if you ask a guy if he likes cars, he is not going to be all: "OOHHAA why do you presume i like cars, why did you not ask me if i like pink barbie dolls instead" What you are doing is calling rowdy Misogynistic pig
Stereotypes exist for a reason, sure. My point wasn't that women don't like shoes, it was these comments are unnecessary. You could make the exact same argument and not assume someone does a "typical" female thing.
Surely you can understand why painting an entire group of people with a very broad stroke can be annoying. And, as person that was painted with that broad stroke I felt it well within my right to say why that could be handled a better way. Should we all just be quite when we think things can be improved? I'd rather have a voice than never say a word.

I can assure you that no offence was intended, and I apologise for the unintended generalisations that I appear to have made.
FWIW the young lady to whom I made that remark (some years ago now) took it in very good spirit, and admitted she did have something of an obsession for collecting shoes. In return, I suggested she ask her other male friends how many neck ties they had, a notion that she found interesting, although I do not know if she put it into practice.

Yessss. I've got an 1800 PCB and plate coming from Leeku's most recent GB, so I can just pull the old one out and put the new one in. The caps are interchangeable though aren't they?
I don't think that many men have lots of ties :P .
I don't own, or have ever owned, a single tie :p . I've only ever worn one for maybe a minute just to try it out and that was more than enough to put me off for life :p .From the very limited time I have spent playing around with them, I kinda like Cherry MY switches...

Yes, I was thinking the same thing after posting that... still can't top that username though :thumb:
It's probably just me, but I love Ripster's boldness while never taking a situation too seriously. That's pretty much what immortalizes him in this community as a whole, much to the chagrin of those that ousted him, I'm sure. I know that attitude can't last for long on a forum though without a lot of clashing, but I always get a good laugh from his antics.

Have you ever read some of his participation in older threads, like the one on DT about r00tw0rm? The thread is a pain in the ass to read because every 5th post is completely irrelevant and contributes nothing to the discussion at all. To be honest I think reddit is a format that was practically built for him because the vote system filters out the inane stuff he says while preserving his actually very interesting research.

Yeah, exactly what I mean. I don't think that attitude is really functional in a community that exists in a more relatively closed environment, whereas Reddit, which sees people flooding in like crazy all the time... Yeah, perfect for him, and yeah, the voting system helps that's for sure. He might take things a little too lightly--all the time.
I'm a big fan of the light-hearted attitude. Unlike most of you I've only just gotten into the whole mechanical keyboard thing and I will most likely never dedicate myself to it as many of you do. I'm an interested outsider and you guys are full-fledged enthusiasts. Ripster's informative posts are quite useful to me and his snarky attitude (which is rather tame from what I've seen on reddit) just comes off as simple fun.

Unfortunately that "light-hearted fun" often ends up being very divisive by turning a lot of MK people against Geekhack. I know that Geekhack isn't good at all about that either, but it happens. Also his posts are just annoying as **** after awhile, trust me, and when there's no way to make them go away (downvoting) its a lot worse. I'm certainly not arguing on the value of his informative posts. While the MK wiki is generally a mess, he does do very good research and uncovers interesting stuff. His drive for that kind of thing is admirable.
If it's any consolation, I like what I've seen from both communities and there doesn't seem to be that much bickering or drama (at the moment, at least).

Wow, that's actually awesome, I kind of feel bad that I've contributed to some of your first experiences with that. Hopefully you can be a successful bridge between both communities like speedbump is. Both communities certiantly have their virtues, especially when you're first starting out.
Haha, I'm just trying to help out who I can to make up for all those that assisted me with all my keyboard questions (which I'm sure have been asked time and time again). I'll bet some of the veterans get tired of essentially repeating themselves. I've done my research and tried out of a few things so I like to provide my perspective when possible to other newbies or inquisitive users.
I do get kind of miffed when a single shot of a POK3R gets a ton of upvotes on reddit whereas it always seems hard to even get to 60 when I upload. My Octagon w/ Jukebox was the highest I ever got at 210, whereas someone's single shot of a b.face got 500+, haha. When you put a lot of work into something, and it doesn't feel appreciated, that kinda sucks.
This should be posted on the unpopular opinions thread. :)
karma is so materialistic anyway

It's literally just not lol :p I get what you mean though
Oh, yeah. Not THAT kind of karma, hahaha. No, I mean reddit karma points. The fact it's called karma is kind of dumb anyways. /salt
Confession: I keep buying artisans and never use any of them.
I try to view the mechanical keyboard community as a whole rather than some fragmented thing.

I don't really understand the mentalities people have on reddit, but I do like the r/MK community, just not the logic behind the voting. It could always be my craptastic camera, but I think I've seen potatoes get a bunch of votes. Either way, karma is so materialistic anyway--it shouldn't annoy me as much as it does, but eh.

I fear I may have to do this with some of my stuff. Haven't touched the N64 or SNES in ages, and somehow my apartment has collected 3 n64s between me and my roommates. Starting to get a bit much.I've been throwing things away versus trying to sell them.
Lmao I did this with a bunch of gaming stuff. Although I donated it rather than tossing it. I literally got so tired of listing things on eBay that I eventually just threw a mass of systems and games into a box and drove it to the Salvation Army.

Unfortunately, I only need a select few from what you are selling so I can't take advantage of the bulk deal. ;) And I have purchased enough video games in the last year to cover me quite a long time (just ask Halverson and CPTBadAss :-[ ), I really should hold off on any more purchases. :|
It feels good to sell things but also feels bad at the same time. :/
I've ruined two keyboards by trying to replace switches. I'm not entirely sure how, but on both boards about 1/3 of the keys simply do not work. I think I damaged the PCBs.

It sounds like you pulled out the plugs in the hole. In som cades pass are connected through Cooper cylinders to the othwr side of the PCB. Or you simply ****ed the traces :)

At one of my old jobs I kept several keyboards in my cubical, stashed in one of my file cabinets. On my last day of that job (which had lasted 7 years), I realized that I had left one keyboard in my cube, but I chose to just abandon it. It was an Ortek MCK-142. Here's a link to what these were:
http://www.monu-cad.com/MCK142_Keyboard.htm
I was distracted that day, and now kick myself for being so stupid. The switches on that board were too light for me, but honestly, it is such a cool board that I really wish I still had it, just to take out and use once and awhile.

Wow. I never knew such a thing existed! Now I REALLY want to have one and swap all its switches with blue Alps switches.
Man, yeeeeah, leaving that board was not the best of ideas. :( ...But it happens! Hopefully you have another board in your life that brings you happiness! :P
Ah, the MCK-142, the battlecruiser everyone always forgets about xD . They're great - and expensive as well as fairly rare xD .At one of my old jobs I kept several keyboards in my cubical, stashed in one of my file cabinets. Yeah, those Ortek MCK-142's were epic, and worth keeping even just as a link to keyboard history. I still kick myself for that. I have hope that I may run into a near mint MCK-142 to add to my stable.
45g topre is too heavy for me. After I dental band modded my HHKB and thus reduced the travel and weight, I enjoyed it a lot more
I have a variable 87UB and I love the variable switch weighting idea, but I'm going to dental band mod it as well, which will give me ultralight 30g topre switches on some keys
sorry 55g topre lovers
yeah I did see that and I think it's great because 30g topre is pretty hard to come by currently45g topre is too heavy for me. After I dental band modded my HHKB and thus reduced the travel and weight, I enjoyed it a lot more

currently in the process of dental band modding tonight. man the pcb has a lot of screws!!

More than enough to hold a Yugo together. Roll my eyes every time I take a Topre board apart.
I haven't cleaned my keyboard in all the 1 and a half years I've owned it, and after I once tried, do I never plan on doing it again.

Costar stabilisers are pretty easy after the first time.
I literally tried for over an hour to get 5 stabelizers on. But I have heard that Razer (Which is the KB I am using), do use cheap quality. My issue was that the stabelizers kept on popping out from the KB when I tried to get then into the caps.I haven't cleaned my keyboard in all the 1 and a half years I've owned it, and after I once tried, do I never plan on doing it again.

Agreed, you get into the habit of slowly wiggling the cap back onto the wire after a while. Actually becomes satisfying after a while.
I already decided that I prefer Alps over any MX switch, but now I'm worried I might actually like purple Zealios better.

I'm gonna feel it hard when SNES GMK drops followed by Jukebox Round 2 and the Octagon v2. If LastPilot's proposed Graphite replica set comes out (for Alps) and HPS's carbon fiber case is finished around the same time, then my wallet is truly ****ed.

I can't afford this hobby...
I've been throwing things away versus trying to sell them.
Threw away ~15 g81 board with credit car readers. Kept the caps :thumb::( No one wanted the switches?
My (sort of) keyboard confession. I was painting the switch plate for my Dell AT101W green during winter. Decided I wouldn't back my black car all the way out of the garage. Ended up getting a fine mist of green paint on the front end. It has been 8+ months and I haven't told my wife :O.lol! The good news is that will probably come off very easily with a clay bar. I've actually taken off another car's paint from mine using one before. (Wasn't happy about having to do that though.)

Definitely the new novelties, the R4 shift pack, and any other unique bits and ends to the set, but I think I might pass on another full set as I don't really have a board to put it on and I'm going for GMK SNES on the next Octagon.
LSB mentioned having an alphas pack with black legends. I am not sure about that, but it might be tempting!

Put some victorinox on the wire where it meets the inserts and on the bit where it clips in on the plate, and you should have a much quieter experience! Seriously, it almost sounds just like a non-stabilized key when lubed properly.
Unless, of course, you're using wire that sits loosely in the retaining bit on the plate, then it's bound to rattle until it's tightened up.

I think I might just buy a new plate that way I can actually have the layout I want with stepped caps, wkl bottom row, hhkb shift and top row and actually use real stabilizers other than this cheap ****
I'm gonna talk to my buddy with a CNC machine about getting some acrylic plates made up for white fox because I don't think I can stand using these stabs

I like how costar stabs feel but I do not like to install or uninstall them, or removing key caps, they suck at that. That was one of the reasons I sold my Infinity.
Cherry clipped stabilizers feel as good as Costars and have the benefit of easy installation and key cap change.

I'm surprised someone hasn't come along and started offering cherry stabs in different colours + preclipped

I think I've read somewhere that Matt3o's board doesn't support PCB stabilizers, but I could be wrong! Were you planning on using plate-mounted Cherry stabs?
Yeah, I'm not sure which I like more, to be honest. I really enjoy costar when it's lubed to the point of being practically silent in terms of rattle. Cherry is about the same, hmm... I dunno though! Cherry is definitely more elegant looking and preferred by most Korean custom designers. Even gold costar wire wouldn't look as classy, haha.QuoteImagine red sliders with translucent housings.
Alternate colors for Cherry stabilizers would be sick!
The pcb supports pcb mounted stabs but the plates that are shipping don't (only support costar stabs ala KC60).
If I were to make a plate it would be GON style supporting all the layouts and pcb mount stabs only

Ahh, I see that now! I should've looked at a damn picture of the PCB, haha. Yeah, a universal plate would be a good idea, imo.
I offer a keyboard assembly service with pretty good track record but I constantly ruin my own keyboards ^^
I like Costar AND Cherry stabilisers.

Its bad that there is almost no support for costar on customs.
I am starting to prefer my Hammer-cased Alps board to my Octagon. I'm not sure if this is because of the investment I have in the board, or because of the shorter throw and feel of Alps and what not... or if it's the lower incline on the Hammer case, or the SA caps vs Alps caps. I don't think it's the 60% layout alone, but it has turned into one of my favorite boards to type on, hands down. :)

Mine? I absolutely hate the "Windows" and "Menu" keys with a passion. I used to pop them right off the keyboard whenever I encountered them.
get a winkeyless cherry board ^-^
I impulse bought a HHKB while I was in Tokyo, because I wanted to try topre and it was very cheap.
I brought it to work and immediately didn't like the feel of the switches, but kept on using it because of the investment and the status it has here. Even dental band modded it.
I stopped using it as my daily driver because of the nature of my work (Visual Studio based programming), but it's now my favourite board. I find myself taking it out of my drawer just to press the keys. The thing is though, I don't know if I truly love it, or I've somehow managed to deeply brainwash myself into liking it over time...

Don't mean to grave dig but used to do Visual Studio based programming but now do WebApps in different languages but similar to .Net. What are the disadvantages of having a HHK in this field?

Visual studio is very heavy on the function row, and navigation key usage. it's really a hassle because I find that I would be holding the fn key down a LOT.

breaking a small piece of plastic off of the bottom of the case, or even scratching the inside of the case..
every single second i type on a keyboard that i've personally damaged, i think about the damage i've caused.

Why would anyone hate you for buying a GON? Or is the capitalization you chose (GoN) intentional, and this a different type of board that I'm not aware of? O.o
GON boards are great...
maybe because its a first board? there are some people out there that get annoyed when people go straight into the deep end because they feel that you have to work you're way there to appreciate the difference
i personally couldn't care less what people buy for their first board

Oh whoops, I should have elaborated. My question was directed at Malenky about him or her being jealous of this sort of thing. I'm respectfully jealous of this sort of thing regardless of how experienced a person is with the items. I just hope that 18 old with a Porsche is responsible :eek:But why?for my first keyboard (GoN, don't hate me, wanted to get something that doesn't look like **** like all the mainstream mechs)

They have the money to go straight for the end-game in a hobby they just started. Sort of like an 18 year old buying a Porsche for his first car, but to a lesser extent.

I thought aluminum case is the coolest thing and it's like poor man's Korean customs.
I broke my jelly pom spacebar the day I got it ;-;
I've got at least a half dozen brand new keysets I've never checked to make sure they are complete. I'm not even sure where some of them are. :-\

Okey here goes. I live in Norway and I ended up spending 2000 NOK (235 USD) on my White Pok3r after shipping and tax. I love the keyboard, but it cost me way too much and it also took 2 months for it to arrive. What I learned is that I won't buy anything from Corus directly again. I still haven't gotten the extra keycaps I ordered from them. I haven't told anyone that it cost me this much either
I like MX clears and greens (I thought I liked browns before I went back to my greens and then to browns again)
I bought greens on my first mechanical keyboard because not alot of people have them and I wanted to be special...
Last confession for now. I spend too much time on geekhack in class. (I'm in class as I'm typing this)

I have been a member of this forum for 2+ years (other account) and I still dont have a mechanical keyboard : l, currently in early stages of building, so soon I shall be liberated from the discomfort of crappy keyboards!
I have at least 70 keyboards with switch types and layouts that I don't use.70? Holy f... Maybe start a museum?
I only use 3 regularly.
So far I enjoy typing on my stock HHKB than my Duck Viper or GON.....

I have more azerty keysets than keyboards to put them on.
I have damaged my V60 MTS PCB beyond repair.
Old pic but since more wiring has been added to keep it going. RIP through holes. Im not bad at soldering by any means but the ****ing non lead base solder doesnt melt for **** so I ended up ripping out a TON of through holes. Didnt realize until it was too late.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/OOqL6lo.jpg)
Wiring saved it expect for the Win keys. Before I add resistors for the LEDs I am going to get a replacement straight from KBP.
Secondly I accidentally melted my SGI Granite case a bit with a solder iron. ;( Sanded it down and it isnt that bad but sucks nonetheless.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/mtLucFE.jpg)
Ah man I cracked a model f at case no worries
Ahh yeah, ouch. Even with a filler for that melted gouge, the SGI granite case is so uniquely speckled and such that it would be hard to make it blend in. One on of my boards, I used a piece of beige/off-white plastic from a scrapped keyboard to fill in the gap using plastic welding with a flat tip on my soldering iron. Worked really well and you can't even tell it was there, thought it was on the bottom lip (but did cut into the side of the case and could be seen).

Yea, there's no way to fill it, it would honestly look worse. The spot isn't that big, it was only there for a sec until I yanked it off. Originally it looked a lot worse since there was some melted plastic bits and residue around the mark. Cleaned it up with a file as you can see in the picture. Now its nice and smooth. it almost looks like something was dropped on it.
Still kinda sad considering the great condition of it, only a bit of rust on the plate and a bad Numpad + key, otherwise it was brand new!
The tip of the iron got really close to the Alt keycap, thank god I didn't melt that.
The light at the end of the tunnel is that the filing revealed the original color of the plastic, it took off the very top coat where it yellowed. Looks great...

I actually have grey ABS plastic. If you mixed it with a bit of that speckled stuff they put in their own mix, it might work, but nah. I mean, at least it's just the top case, so you can always replace it with one from another SGI. Keep a look out for anyone throwing their SGIs away after scrapping them or something. :) See, if it were the bottom case, then it'd be tricky, at least if you want to keep all the serial number information and such true to the board.
Oh man, good thing you didn't singe or melt the cap, that would've been so bad. If it were me, I'd probably want to flip a table at that point. A lot of things have driven me close to the breaking point in this hobby before; by that, I mean customization or assembly projects. Like, my Octagon was a nightmare, some paint jobs I've done had very close calls toward complete screw ups (my Infinity was a nightmare there), and my Hammer Alps Duck Eagle project got to that point a few times.
I never threw in the towel though, haha.
At least your SGI still functions though! Again, just keep an eye out for anyone who might have spare parts. :)
Oh, have you not retrobrighted the plastic yet? Yeah, it doesn't look bad TBH. Sometimes battle scars are nice to have. :D

I want a backlit HHKB. Blue blacklighting would make this my favorite keyboard ever.
im thinking of using a dremel to cut off some diodes from a pcb, because cba to desolder diodes!
I melted the legs off a switch then ripped it out with pliers... PCB still works.

I furiously wash my hands before using my keyboard. I always have travel hand sanitizer next to my board. Sometimes my hands are really dry because of the sanitizing but it's worth if because of them boards.

You don't care about grease or oil building up on your caps?
That picture hides the yellow. Honestly i'm not going to replace it/fix it, irl its not terrible. Literally no one scraps SGI's anyway. One guy made a 60% but otherwise the keycaps are borrowed for another board, the Granite itself is never touched. Collectors value its uniqueness or some ****
A melted keycap though (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Here is what it is supposed to look like, nice and blue. It will be a couple months until I retrobright it since right now its been dark and rainy here in sunny side California! When the sun is out its rather weak.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/sLR52.jpg)

I did mine is Sunny Texas (SGI Granite - identical) just a few month ago once it was nice and sunny outside. Took a couple of days in the Texas sun with some Clairol Creme Developer (stronger than Retrobrite and $5/bottle).
Admittedly I just did the top case since it was just aweful and the back was not bad. I did end up with a tony bit of streaking which went away in a couple weeks after which has not happened on anything else I have retro'd. the keycaps on these are the best alps caps out there I am sure (yes even above the AEKII) and I just love the slant on the font. BY FAR (IMO) the nicest looking and performing BigFoot (even heavier than the Dell 101w) and somehow though they have the same damped switches as the later AEKII's they are so much more crisp (yes, I have multiples of each... don't judge me!).
Confession: I hate anything above a 75% keyboard after a while..... I am a programmer and I feel like I am wasting so much of my hand movements to type on a big keyboard for day-to-day work use.
Other Confession: ABS is a bad plastic for keycaps. It wears far too quickly. I wish we could find a way to coat ABS keycaps to prevent the shine-a thon that destroys grip and texture. Cherry caps that haven't been used feel great... for about 3-4 months.
It's a really nice PCB and is super easy to program but I won't ever use it. :eek:I don't even like most of my keyboards or keycaps.
do you like the leeku 3000? :/

I will be trashing about 1 cubic meter of keyboards, PCBs, parts, casings, whatevers tomorrow night. We're going to target certain construction site dumpsters and do a commando dumping raid so that we don't have to pay anyone to move these to the incinerator.
And I recommend that jdcarpe, SpamRay, and whoever has collected way more boards than he needs, do the same.
As perverse as it sounds, the thought of dumping 1 cubic meter makes me feel really empowered. I feel that my keyboarding has finally come full circle. I have all the boards that I want or need. I have the skills to mod the boards that I want. That is enough.
I am content.

I may have 19 non-stock keysets(5 being made/on the way to me) and 5 boards... :p
edit: I still need to have one of those boards build so 4 usable.
I hate clicky switches.^This !
Why would someone want more noise from a keyboard?
Mechanical keyboards are usually already louder than regular keyboards..

Much as i love my HHKB and Topre i have to admit i miss MX blues now and then...and currently use each switch about the same amount of time.

I'm using Buckling Springs and I miss my MX Blues sometimes. I used them very heavily so they were very worn in and consequently very smooth.
Typing on them felt very light and effortless, Buckling Springs are superior in almost every way but they feel like walking up stairs.

I've held back so far this month but we're only at the 9th and I just pray to the gods that nothing extremely interesting drops this month.
takes time, but you will learn what you like and what is worth spending on
I bought a brand new still in original IBM box 1985 Model M 1390131 and within 10 minutes of using it on my computer, spilt my cup of orange juice on it and about 15 keys stopped working. Tried my best to drain it and fix it but had little experience with soldering, etc so its just collecting dust. >:D

I have spent $572 since getting into mechanical keyboards last month.Youve also saved one of a kind clacks, and pretty much someones whole collection, so you really deserve a 572$ collection :))
I predict that my next keyboard guilt will be buying a Topre board. When I can afford one, of course. As a high school student, I rarely ever have $250 on hand.

better than I, spending 10,000 in a year.

i'm not quite that high, but i've probably dropped close to 1.5k in the past year on keyboards and (mostly) artisans. the nice thing is that items retain value so well in this hobby that reselling at what you paid really isn't an issue.

I've stopped counting how much I've spent on keyboards a few months ago because I didn't want to see how big the number was anymore

I've had to stop counting how much I've spent as well. I'm sure there is a retirement fund and a half hidden in those costs somewhere. I regret nothing, though.

Cocktail geeks? You mean alcoholics? Yeah we are around.
Well, tbh, anything is bette than Browns. Also what keyboard are you using that has 45g? If it's RF I completely understand. I find 45g RF to be incredibly light. It feels way lighter than hhkb 45g. But I think you'd love 55g. It's personally my favorite switch. Just the perfect weight IMO.

Browns are reds with dirt in them
I have a very heavily beat up IBM Rubber-dome Board (broken) that's my go to "Cheeto board/dinner plate" for when i'm too lazy to wash dishes.Rofl never thought of that, what a novel idea.

I don't like ANSI at all...
I use caps lock instead of shift to capitalize my letters.

When I get lazy working from home I sit and use my Dell XPS 13 on the couch instead of one of my endgame-adjacent 60% boards/multiple monitor desk setup.Yeah sometimes I can't be bothered to sit at the battlestation so I just grab a laptop or tablet and sit on the couch.

Actually, although I think ISO is great, most of my boards are BAE xD . So I don't even have to move my hand more :P . I like BAE a lot as well. It's just ANSI that I don't like as I think it's wasteful of space and the enter key is both annoying and ugly to me.I don't like ANSI at all...
I forgive you, C. After all, not everyone can appreciate the advantages of not having to move one's hand considerably to the right to avoid pressing ~ or @ rather than Enter. Plus, ISO has the whole European-charm thing going. It's the reason we Westerners spend thousands of bucks and/or a bunch of our accumulated air miles to hang out with people who don't realize how smaller, scarcer and more expensive everything is, just because good wine and cheese are a bit more reasonable and it's easier to find live accordion music and donkey wearing flowered hats, and so on. Sometimes less is more—but other times, less is just less, but it's marketably less. (This, entirely coincidentally, is my Keyboard Confession.)
You think ANSI wastes a lot of space yet you like BAEs? :eek:Well ANSI has fewer keys than ISO and gains nothing useful in return, the way I see it. BAE layouts vary of course, but they get the same amount of keys as ANSI, and at least they get what's pretty much objectively the best enter key shape. And like I said, ANSI just looks ugly to me. It doesn't look the way a keyboard should look. If you look at abstract or cultural depictions of enter keys, you'll see most of the time it's shaped like a BAE.
Please explain!

I didn't read any advice on how to take my Novatouch apart to add hyperpheres. After dumping 1/2 the conical springs on patterned carpet, taking 5 attempts to get all the domes lined up properly, and reassembling the board, I found that none of the sliders lined up properly. In addition, I also found that after removing the sliders the wrong way, a small amount of pressure will cause the slider to now pop out of place and require a disassembling of the board.
It's still sitting at work, rings on, with me not being able to get the $90 PMK Dye Sublimated DSAs I bought for it. It will likely die there as I am not going to ask anybody to help me with that.

If I was smart, I would disassemble it and offer parts to people as they need them, it never hurts to have extra conical springs and domes, and I could certainly offer the hyperspheres to somebody or even try it again with a barebones Novatouch getting either helpful advice or actual help with the installation.
I'm sure it will sit there until I switch jobs, not to be completed due to a combination of stubbornness and ignorance :-[
idk but im sure there are many people willing to go for the offer, since novatouch is often bought as a donor board and as long as the parts are intact its a good deal
just jumped on the topre bandwagon with the current massdrop offer, decided I should give it a go, wish me luck!

:p :p :p
I used Model M boards exclusively from around 1997 to 2012. In my ignorant opinion, nothing else compared to the glory and majesty of buckling springs. That led to some very bad decisions such as...this post made me cry
Giving away a perfectly good SGI keyboard with Alps of some variety. I didn't know anything about Alps even though I had a Focus FK-2001 with blue Alps that I'd purchased in 1989.
Putting an Intertec Superbrain CP/M computer that someone had given me on the curb during a move. I never got around to figuring out what switches it had.
And the one I regret the most is putting a complete and working Wyse terminal on the curb during that same move. The keyboard had MX blacks that I thought felt like crap because they weren't "clicky" like my cherished Model M keyboards. Vintage MX blacks are now among my favorite switches along with BS and Topre and are what I used from a 1986 Wyse board to build my Phantom / TEX keyboard.

I shed a tear when I look at the prices of dumb terminals on eBay and remember what I threw away. I'd very much like to have one now.
For the longest time, I thought Chyros' username was spelled Chryos. :-XYou're not the only one, I must've seen at least a dozen people spell it like that :p .

The actual pronunciation of it is completely different from what almost everyone here will be expecting, too :p .
That's close, I expect most people to pronounce it closer to KAI-ros. It's actually pronounced "KHEE-ros" with "kh" being a hard G, the R a hard R (sounds a bit like a snarl), and the O short (doesn't like like the "oh" in double oh seven, but like the O in "pot").For the longest time, I thought Chyros' username was spelled Chryos. :-XYou're not the only one, I must've seen at least a dozen people spell it like that :p .

So, give it up. I assumed that it was "KEE-ros" (that is the American "E" which is like the European "I")

No, that's Chronos. The G is similar to, but harsher than the Ch in Chronos.

About what I thought except for the "G" part. This is the Greek time god, isn't it?
By tonight.
I will own more mx boards than topre.

I don't know, I don't think I've ever tasted myself :p . Gyro, when authentic, is really good though :D .

At least when it comes to Alps, I like all three switch type varieties. Linear is probably my favorite on average and it's what I started with, but the other types keep it interesting.
Alps SKCL Green, SKCL Brown :thumb: Blue Alps are always nice though.
For Cherry MX, vintage MX black is my favorite, hands down.
for me it must have been over paying for a rusty, yes RUSTY dell at101w that was covered in food, literal chunks of food under the keycaps. to be precise, $50 or about £39. i did it because i lost about 5 dell at101w's in bidding and got so annoyed that instead of waiting, i bought it only to realize that if i simply typed at102 i would have found lots of cheaper ones from the UK with more appropriate english layouts :blank: ...

I also tried thick ABS / PBT but I find the stock thin ABS sort of have it's charm and it's a little bit more "clacky" than the thick keycaps.

Lol I know we're the rare breed. I just find them "echo" better which translates to "more clacky".
This one time, I was going to buy a Razor keyboard.

After 2+ years of perfect and firm GMK keycaps, I have a secret longing for flat and imperfect DSA's...
Once I thought what it would be like to take a dremel to my keyboard case.
Ruined a spot of plastic so I went what the hell and took a wet sanding block and sanded the whole keyboard down to a nice matte texture.

I recreationally sand a lot of things down to a nice matte texture, my best application yet is a lamy scribble mechanical pencil, also works great on removing the pad print on pad printed keycaps and turning them into silky smooth blanks
I try a new tactile switch from time to time, in some cases like it, think it's great… and go back to typing on linears. Keeping it simple, I guess.
PROTIP: get a timed outlet. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FSQTSB8/I accidentally left my Hakko FR-300 (desoldering gun) on and hot, sitting on the edge of my table, for over a week...

Yup. I love the sharp 'clack' it makes.
I in poor practice often eat and drink beer, soda or whatever near my board and staying up past my bedtime doing whatever project I'm working on, fall asleep and spill my beverage and frack up the board and have to desolder everything and replace or clean the switches. This has probably happened 5 times, well maybe more. At least once I've thrown it out and just bought a new one. I've wisened up and haven't done this in a year... Oh and of the 8 or 9 boards I own I only use two, the rest sit in storage...

I buy keyboards just to try, then just pile them up.Same here ;D
I've started buying keyboards and having them sent to work instead of home because I have too many at home. But now I've run out of draws at work.i bought my second pok3r (an RGB) and typed on it once just to see the led lighting and then boxed it up and never touched it again.Might be time to start selling off a few? :D
Where do you sell them?mechmarket? I put the pok3r on eBay for about half what I paid for it and free shipping and it hasn't sold.Yeah mechmarket or the classifieds here.
