So, as mentioned in the original IC thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=92780.0):
These are very minor changes that should not be deal-breakers for anyone. No other change to the kits will be made.

About the proxies: it will a couple of days until our Europe (mykeyboard.eu) and Asia (zFrontier) proxies are up. Very sorry about that!

Please feel free to ask any question about compatibility for your particular keyboard or anything else, eg. issues with your vendor, etc.

Cheers!

Exciting, this might be my first custom keycap set and first GB. Also waiting for the EU website.

Is there a fixed stock count on these, or will whatever gets ordered until May 10th get produced and shipped? (provided it meets MOQ, I assume?)

It is the latter. Whatever is ordered is what is produced so long as it reaches MOQ. So it’s not a rush but the earlier you get your order in the easier it is to determine what will reach MOQ.

You’ve picked a damn fine GB to join for your first one!

Same here on both accounts (first DSA and first GB) - this set is just too nice to pass up, that teal colour is pure magic. Hope we hit MOQ!

Thanks! Not sure how I missed them in the TLK. Wish the M0110 didn’t have such odd sized mods but I think I can make this work. Will just have two enters instead of two shifts.

Sorry about that. The reason why we added the Fn key (and maybe '=') is because they were removed by mistake.

There's no dark '|\' key because it's not part of the default Planck layout (on which the ortho kit is based). That's just where I drew the line. Also, no one suggested it during the IC. In hindsight, maybe I would include it.

Like I said, one 1u is not much, but if we add another, and another... it quickly gets out of hand.

There is a grey 1u '|\' hiding in the alphas, in case you hadn't noticed. And if you realllly need a dark one, then there's always the ISO kit :( It's not impossible that someone who doesn't need theirs can sell it to you.

Thanks. Totally understandable. I have noticed this is often the missing key, so I guess my layout is exceptional. I would expect users of a Preonic users or any split with thumb keys to put the pipe key there. No matter, I can maybe buy it of someone else or just put a novelty there.

Right, I did the calculation and it would come about the same price ordering from the US and paying import fees and tax.

It just makes me wonder what the advantage of a proxy is in that case.

Probably reduces and simplifies customs fees. I’m definitely more comfortable buying from a EU proxy, especially if the price is essentially the same.

Definitely.

I'm looking into it with TKC. But...

From my experience with the Canadian proxy, if I were to charge in Canadian dollars, then the price goes up 3% automatically. Beyond a certain order quantity, I would have to charge 10% more in taxes. Shipping from the manufacturer to Canada is also more expensive (let alone Europe); since we sell fewer kits, I have to take that penalty. In this case, Canadian buyers save on shipping, taxes and duties.

However, a full-fledged business has to charge full taxes (in Canada, at least). Prices listed on mykeyboard.eu include VAT. There is also duties and handling fees related to importing.

If the price is roughly the same as buying directly, then you win because 1. you get more reliable shipping (imagine 50+ packages crossing the ocean, versus one). Your local proxy has access to and is more familiar with the local carriers. 2. Service at proximity is always preferable in case anything goes wrong. Not to mention that our EU and Asia proxies are reputable businesses used to this kind of thing.

I would expect a smoother experience, overall.

Last info I got from TKC/zFrontier is they are setting things up and should open this Friday or Saturday. That's a 3 week window until GB close.

Although I would recommend ordering from your nearest vendor, I asked TKC and they are able to fulfill international orders.

Hey!

For the Prime_E (as pictured) you need the following kits:
  • Alphas
  • Ortho + 40%
  • Novelties

Thanks so much for answering my question! Wasn’t sure just going off the picture lol.

I’m definitely in for alphas and ortho, I’m just deciding now if I should go in for novelties. Really excited for this!

No problem!

Keep in mind, if you want to cover the Prime_E then you actually need the novelties (or TKL...) for the extra 1.25u modifiers on the bottom row. Prime_E (with this particular layout) has more 1.25u's than usual for a 40.

Novelties are a must for all keyboards, imo. ;D

Yeah I’m just still deciding what I’m gonna put on that board. Thanks for pointing it out though because if I don’t have layouts in front of me I often forget what I’m missing lol.

I might go with the TKL to cover more ground. The thing is I’m also in for the wonderland group buy and waiting on my zlant to get back from a switch swap so I’m counting my key caps before they hatch, lol! I definitely want this set to be compatible with multiple boards tho so the TKL, alphas and 40s might be the way to go.

I hope zFrontier could be more punctual honestly, quite disappointed as it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo late

and there's still one more vendor to come online!

Seems to be live...

It's a very uncommon layout, you can't even find it on Google images, but it's supported. Not many kits cover it tbqh. Guess the cheapest way to do it would be Numpad, if not that then TKL backspace or another 40s kit.

I see! (same question from r/mechmarket?)

I would get some 2u blanks from pmkb (https://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-2-space-pack-of-4/) while the GB (dark grey) colour is in stock. Although it's likely that GTD (light grey) will be in stock after this group buy is run.

How often will you post updated graphs of MOQ progress?

I keep a spreadsheet but it's difficult to synchronize all the proxies. They realistically cannot provide daily updates (imagine for all the group buys). I try to send reminders often, thru TKC.

Yeah, of course. Once a week would be more than enough I think, if that's not too much.

That's the curse of making those pretty graphs, now we're all junkies for progress and updates, we want to see those bars grow! :D

The new Massdrop site does a good job at hiding all independent project pages... real bummer. We were getting good visibility before launch, and now literally nothing.

It's not too late to help generate interest:

I will try to come up with new content.

I wonder if you could somehow drum up some interest from a tech news site. It’s not often that keyboards are relatable outside of our niche little realm but I think a lot of people could relate to this set because so many people have had experience with the Ti calculators. I dunno how that happens but just a thought.

Alright. Thanks again dvorcol!

Looks like TKL and Novelties still need a little push. Good news is ISO and NorDe are looking less grim since EU has opened. ;D

NB. These latest numbers do not include any zFrontier sales. I don't know when we'll get them. Also, if the data seems a bit chaotic, it's because we don't get daily updates from Mykeyboard.eu; they only show up in chunks every few days.

Several kits have hit MOQ as of now. We are very close on the others. Close enough that I will buy the extras. So rest assured, if you join, this IS going to happen.

Ok, back to letting Voodoo6k handle this. Everyone, give this guy a pat on the back if you catch him at a meetup!

I have sat on the edge with this set from the start.  I just ordered the Numpad kit and I plan on using it on a (also just ordered) Mistel MD200 Freeboard. Part of the plan is to make a colour matching acrilic replacement for the orange one that comes with the MD200.

I think the yellow would suit or maybe the green.  What do you all think?

Yeah, I think so! I actually wanted to model a Mistel MD200 when looking at cool numpads for the IC. I think the colours will even match the original orange acrylic.

Don't forget to get your DSA relegendables in GB colour (dark grey) from pmkb (https://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-relegendables-pack-of-10/) while they're in stock...

Reminder: Last week to place your order! Group buy ends this Friday, May 10.

Note to all Canadian buyers: Since all kits have reached MOQ, I will be capturing payments within the next few days. If there are any issues, I will contact those involved.

Sorry about the lack of new graphs. Should be coming in shortly. I'm as eager as anyone else to see our latest stats.

Cheers!

Yeah! I can think of several reasons:

1. DSA suits small keyboards very well
2. It helps when you have separate alphas (ahem GMK)
3. The kit covers many keyboards and the price is reasonable

I updated all the graphs in this thread to the new format.

What's different? Can't really tell.

If we're talking graph tweaks, it would be nice to be able to see where the MOQ limit was, even after it was surpassed. Would better show how much above MOQ it is when it's done.

I was also really surprised when 40% reached MOQ even before TKL did, even if TKL still wins on pure numbers at this point. Not that I have a 40% board, but for me, the kits were just really well designed and thought through. I was able to get just what I needed and very little else.

The x-axis maximum is higher and the single history graph instead of four.

If there were also price drop points, indicating everything after it's exceeded gets pretty messy.  But with no price drops, marking the MOQs isn't so bad.  For example:

Oh man, this can't come fast enough now. I bought some cheap PBT caps in Cherry profile, and it turns out they're too shallow for my keyboard (most keyboards, I would assume). They hit the side of the switch top, causing my Gateron Silent switches to be almost clicky ones. Very annoying. Can't wait to have me some deep, rich, thick, DSA bois instead :)

Honestly I am surprised that the overal final order count wasn’t higher. The colorway on the set is rivaled only by the inimitable DSA Honeywell (I decided on this one instead of the Honeywell. Why? Because of the novelties. Otherwise it would have been a paralyzing decision. :) )

Now the only thing left is determining which of my boards will get this keyset. Have a Plaid, a Core both of which I love. Preonic from a GB is coming this fall as well as the CandyBar. Cant wait for the early Christmas and facing the decision as to which board will be my daily driver.

Okay, so I'm about to send the graphics for the novelty legends and I would like your input...

Obviously, the legends in the original renders aren't 100% accurate. I based the following render on SP's documentation:
Proposed novelty legends:

Option 0: Original renders (for reference)
Option 1: (Pi, e) @ 0.125" height
Option 2: (Pi, e) @ 0.150" height

Poll: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdM52K2dW2fEOzQ99JiX7_SYu6RqpegcVRNhf7icPZrRdICBQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Remarks: Option 1 is closer to the original LaTeX size ratios. Option 2 matches the symbols on the number row. Another option could be 0.133" (not shown), which would match the original renders better.

Open to other possibilities.

PS. Hyp/sin/cos/tan legends are in the regular Gorton Modified font @ 0.100" (same as other modifiers and same as DSA Dolch)
Title: Re: [GB] DSA Scientific (orders closed)
Post by: mta on Mon, 27 May 2019, 14:39:31
Option 2, seems clearer / more consistent to me, yet also sufficiently close to renders. Option 1 a touch small.
Title: Re: [GB] DSA Scientific (orders closed)
Post by: Mekberg on Mon, 27 May 2019, 15:24:33
I think I’m leaning towards option 2 too, mostly because they need to compete with the much larger and clearer alphas. But honestly, either way will probably look great.

Post by: voodoo6k on Mon, 27 May 2019, 21:37:44
Thanks everyone for the responses. Definitely leaning towards the 0.150 inch legends for pi & e.

I think either way would work, but I just wanted to make sure. It's actually kind of tricky because the LaTeX (CMU) font has a variable stroke, whereas the rest of the set is fixed.

Basically, I fattened the symbols to meet the minimum line thickness, while rescaling to the desired height. Seems obvious, but I wanted it to look right without redesigning the symbols with a fixed stroke.

I'll leave the poll open for a bit, but I'm going with Option 2 for now. :thumb:

Where will they be used and how?

Alpha colored caps => match numericals. Go with option 2.

Mod colored caps => match mods. Go with regular Gorton Modified font @ 0.100"?

I realize it might be overkill to go with both, but I suspect they'll be used both for numericals and mods so going with just one of those heights would make them mismatch the other, I guess. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Last option should be something like 0.225 for phi & h-bar (respecting the 1.5x ratio with pi & e), but that's much larger than any legend on the set. (I think) the alphas are 0.187. There are many other possibilities as well...

Personally, I still prefer Option 2. Keep in mind that, even on the reference calculator, the legends are all different sizes.

They don't have to be consistent in size-- they just have to look consistent.

I think the optimal height is something in the range 0.133~0.143 for pi & e, but I'd rather keep it simple and similar to the regular DSA legends.

Okay, I just got what you meant... but I have no idea what that would look like. I'd have to provide a center line, but that would still look similar to the first/second row from the previous post, at least in scale. Imagine a fixed line width.

  • Modifier legend height: 0.100", ~0.015" line thickness
  • Number row legend height: 0.150", ~0.020" line thickness

I got confirmation on those values, FYI. Might be useful in the future.

The vectors graphics were finalized and approved a while back. We re-confirmed various details about the legends (eg. equal size Numpad symbols, scale of novelties, etc.)

All our proxies (ahem) have finally paid, just last week. There was an error in the invoice SP sent, and it took an extra week to get the updated invoices. The good news is, detecting the error now means less delays in the future.

We were quoted at 10 weeks (~end August) for production end/shipping. However, that included several weeks for in-house custom colour matching, which was already done (last year!) when I ordered the samples. So, there's potential for cutting down production time quite a bit, depending on whether they need to redo the colour matching. I haven't got a newer time estimate (other than 10 weeks). For now, they have started to work on various molds. Therefore, we can say that, for all practical purposes, production has started!

I will update when I have further information.

Cheers!

Good to hear the update. And really appreciate the advance color matching, hopefully will cut down production time.

Nice! Do you know if the teal color will get a SP color code assigned? Would love to get some colored spacebars, but all that's currently available is the GB (dark gray)...

I doubt it.

You could ask SP to make some while the group buy is in production, but it will be very expensive. If you can gather 10 people, then it could be around $15 each (that's my guess from a previous quote).

PS. I created a Discord server for my "shop", for those who wanted to discuss more directly about this group buy and new keyset ideas. Being Canadian is not a requirement. ;)

Discord: https://discord.gg/zVgCQyK

The instagram page def needs help... :))

There’ll probably be some extras. The last numbers are probably combining the vendors at the end even if they were purchased throughout + vendor purchases?

Yeah... it did boom on the last day, but many extras were added after the buy ended.

Basically, that's the final order we sent to the manufacturer. It accounts for all buys, errors and extras.

It wasn't really necessary to publish it, but TKC posted these numbers on their website, so might as well... for historical purposes.

Does anyone know if there will be sets to buy through the vendors after the GB is finished? As in whether they bought a bunch of extras to sell themselves? I stupidly passed on the Ortho kit, might want to pick that up as well since I started getting into ortholinear and split keyboards only after I bought this set, and it looks so amazing on ortho layouts.

I haven't got any news from SP about DSA Scientific (even though I'm in contact with them for another project).

Not sure where TKC got August 12 from... August is still the expected ship date, derived from the 10 weeks ETA (after order).

I will update as soon as I have more info!

No no no... August 12 on TKC's website is wrong. I looked at GMK Skiidata and the date is the same, so it must be a placeholder date from when they overhauled the website. (no idea...)

I still have no date from SP on shipping. The "August" shipping date is calculated from the normal DSA doubleshot production time estimate, which is 10 weeks from payment.

As far as I am concerned, production should finish and ship to the vendors in August, assuming there are no delays.

As mentioned in the previous post, I will update as soon as I have further info.

I too have been thinking about ceracoating a case but I don't know if I can/want to afford it. Also which case? This set cries for sth. simple yet classy... Candybar case looks good but I prefer the 60-65% form factor. M0110 Modern or kishsaver maybe? Or Grid600? Could work with all of them but they're all so gosh darn expensive :'(

From TKC on Discord:

As some of you may know, SP sent off Scientific to the wrong address, despite me providing my new warehouse info as well as my own UPS account number to use.
The package was supposed to be redirected and held at the local UPS hub for us to pick up.
Well, UPS only held 1/7 of the packages :-(

TL;DR DSA Scientific wont ship until next week. Sorry for the bad news.

Sh!t happens. Especially with large shipments like this one.

Do I register a complaint with mykeyboard, or is this a systemic issue that will be handled centrally?

I ordered with mykeyboard.eu but I do not have any shipping info yet.  Is anyone else waiting on them?

I can't say... perhaps check with Mykeyboard thru email or Discord. (They may be holding on to the ISO orders, like TKC.)

The new ISO Enters were sent out by SP a few minutes ago.

Ah, what a great board/keyset pair up.
It's kind of giving me a '90s business finance vibe.  I dig it.  :thumb:

Best looking combo I have seen in a while.  Great choice for that board.

I recieved mine week ago, but seeing €100+ product shipped in seal bags was a surprise. Not mykeyboard fault but manufacturer.

My order has shipped, delay was due to the ISO key issue. They wanted to make sure all orders were ok before shipping them out  :thumb:

Any word on US shipments?

From TKC on Discord:
Quote
As some of you may know, SP sent off Scientific to the wrong address, despite me providing my new warehouse info as well as my own UPS account number to use.
The package was supposed to be redirected and held at the local UPS hub for us to pick up.
Well, UPS only held 1/7 of the packages :-(

TL;DR DSA Scientific wont ship until next week. Sorry for the bad news.

Sh!t happens. Especially with large shipments like this one.
Is this still being worked on? It’s been almost two weeks and my order on TKC is still in an unfulfilled status.

No rush, just wanting to double check if it was still something being sorted out.

Update 23 Sept 2019 Signature plastics sent back 6/7 boxes. Waiting on the last box, it was to be dispatched today. They are also sending the fixed ISO kits, so we can ship it all once it arrives. I expect these to be out the door by Wednesday, 9/25 barring no further delays from SP.

Everyone is doing their best to get these out. Trust me!

That's one thing. Another is how bad the sprues are on all the caps, and the fact that they seem to be putting the on the front of the caps. I honestly would expect more quality for the money they charge.

I have my first GMK set coming up soon as well, will be interesting to see the difference between the two.

GMK is much better IMO. Plastic is thicker, place where keycap is cut from the sprue is less visible and when installed invisible because it is not facing You. For someone who is in scale modelling seening what SP did to hide sprue cuts is like seeing Kitty Hawk kits.

Just got my shipping notice from TKC.

I regret not going for a full set, only went with enough to cover a 40% board.
But still looking forward to it.
Love seeing the pictures of boards people are putting this set on.

yakk's are sold out but the other vendors should have theirs available anytime now...

I would contact them directly depending on your region.

For those who haven't noticed... the ISO Enters are in actual DSA profile and not DCS like it was in the past.

Wait what? Really? I got mine shipped before, but didn't notice (haven't dressed a keyboard with them yet though). Have SP made any statements about the DSA ISO Enters finally being in the correct profile?

mykeyboard.eu dont have them yet, they posted some info on discord today:

Quote
NecromanX Today at 9:46 AM

not yet
they were stuck in customs
and they ended sending them back ...
SP didnt ship it with proper documents since it was not a commercial transaction so it needed proof for those things

we have to wait till SP reships it
I ll query them and see if they got them back already
