Foward/backwards for internet browser or other programs.

Hell even more buttons are becoming standard. More and more 5-button, 7-button, even tilt-wheels(Scroll up, down; tilt left right; and M down).

As for the mouse, seems a bit too small compared to Razer Naga. Although I can see the joystick have it's uses the buttons just seem too small and close sorta like those miniature calculators that require some micromanaging to use.

It really depends on the position. The two buttons on the left of a Logitech G9 I never hit by accident. A mouse that came with my Wacom graphic tablet has a button on each side, and I literally can't use it as I hit the right button every time I hold it.

At the end of the day unless you try you will never know if it really is that good or not. For gaming it may have uses but this looks more like a macro mouse. But there are too many face buttons. I would have had 6-8 buttons not 16 face buttons.

If you put switches of varying strength under each button you can avoid mistake clicks. And still be fully usable, of course you would need programs where it would be fairly used.

I set my side buttons on my mouse to backspace and enter. Which I find extremely useful for quick editing and backspace doubles for back in browsers.

Of course some luddites will believe that 2 buttons and scroll is more than enough, but to improve interaction between the user and the system cannot evolve further if you don't change the input devices. Considering this is GeekHack you should enjoy more buttons to auto-hotkey and such ;-). I'm looking forward to the Razer Naga which has more side buttons (12 in total) which I also believe is too many but also give the option of using it as a numpad. End of the day you can always set more keys to do the same thing, therefore you can select the areas of keys which represent a certain function.

I think that mouse buttons quickly lose their utility if you need to look at the mouse in order to make sure that you're clicking the right button.

Anyway Open Office has announced that they are not endorsing the mouse so the Italian designer can no longer call this the OpenOffice Mouse, instead he is rebranding it as OOMouse.

LOL.

Guessing even the guys at OpenOffice.org didn't even consider it to be beneficial to their side :D

Hasn't been released yet from what the blog reads like? On the note of nonstandard keys, I actually enjoy having one thumb and one pinky key on the side of the mouse, especially if the drivers are written properly. Was nice to be able to hold down a PTT TS or Ventrilo button without interrupting gameplay, since it only meant applying a slight bit more pressure to a finger that was not being used anyway.

I think this would be beyond gimmicky, but possibly decent if it didn't have that damn thumb joystick thing. I don't know if that thing could possibly be MORE in the way.

I need 5 buttons + scroll minimum:  Click, Alt, Fwd, Back, Scroll press = new, scroll wheel to scroll

Bummer that mouse was so poorly made.  They should have done what Razer did with the Naga by having them on the side for thumb access, out of the way for normal mouse use, but programmable.  I would be using a Naga if it did that but unfortunately it doesn't.  It's for g4m3rz only.  Another downside to the Naga is the fwd/back buttons look too far forward for my liking.  They should have placed them right by the other buttons, in the location Logitech G9 and other mice put them.

Maybe it's just be, but I think that adding lots of buttons around a laptop trackpad would be genuinely useful. Mice get extra buttons ... trackpads get left behind.

(OK, my old Compal CY27 has a four button trackpad -- left, right, and, between them, what looks like it was meant to be scroll up and scroll down that never did anything, but that's a little uncommon. I also find that tapping top-left for middle mouse -- per the previous laptop -- is more comfortable than using the scroll up button, so careful button placement and layout would be needed).
