[GB] SA Polyclear Important Announcement (Leadtime delays)
« on: Sat, 18 September 2021, 10:33:47 »
Important Update

SA Polyclear's estimated fulfillment date is being moved to Q4 2022

After discussions with Signature Plastics, it has been determined that the prior-announced lead time of around 3 months after GB end is, unfortunately, unfeasible. The quote for a 3 month lead time was provided assuming a much smaller amount of units would be purchased , but due to the success of the Polyclear's GB means that estimate is no longer applicable. Sadly Signature Plastics did not communicate that the original lead time was contingent on order quantity and we failed to foresee that possibility. For this I take responsibility for the resulting situation.
Since the 3 month lead time was a large part of what was advertised we will be offering full refunds for anyone who no longer wishes to participate in the Polyclear GB, this is effective now until the end of this year. (11:59PM, Dec 31st)

If you wish to refund your order please contact your regional vendor and make a request, please be aware that refund policy differs between vendors.
If you purchased through me on NOESC and wish to refund your order please message me with your order number to support@noesc.co.uk.

Please accept my sincere apologies we appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any further questions I will try and respond to them best I can in this thread.

Prototypes
I had some prototypes made, namely some 9u bars.

An extreme closeup reveals the shot pattern that only occurs on the longer keycaps, this pattern is barely visible under normal conditions.

I've not found a manufacturer yet that I'm confident in their production to deliver the quality I want and in a lead time that I think is acceptable. I might consider a lower profile at somepoint in the future but it's more likely to be a project that is still run with Signature Plastics.

Damn, not sure how I feel about the way the kitting ended up, but that might just be because of how I plan on using them.

It's not just that I think they're lacking a bit (I guess it has to come from somewhere when one of the big selling points was how bang-for-buck the set would be - but I probably set my expectations a little high 🙃), but it kinda seems to force us into buying every main set just to get common compatibility, or full accents. Mainly because of Mods only having a 7u (!?), 2.25/2.75 twice but no 1u/1.25u's + only one 2u in the Space kit, etc. And it honestly doesn't actually seem that much cheaper than what would be expected, where it matters. But again, maybe I just had my hopes too high.

Anyway, do you have any centered shots of full sets on a board from the protos? I personally love that they're blanks, and think they look best as accent/mod sets. I'm still psyched these are happening, but I really gotta see how they look IRL. Renders for clear polycarb in-general are so susceptible to the artists stylistic expression, or they end up looking straight up invisible anywhere without bright reflection sim.

Also (and I feel like this needs to be acknowledged, for my own sanity); am I the only one that considers a goddamn 9u-Spacebar the LEAST "namely" or relatable keycap someone could possibly use as the only real-life advertisement sample?

Yeah agreed on a few of your points. The kitting does feel very restrictive - however, I guess that was what was needed to get the prices where they are?

Anyway, I'm in already because I'm excited to try something with this set, but yeah I would love to have seen a sample of a 1u key.

Edit: I also didn't realise that £ would be the same as $ - imagined the pricing would be a little lower in GBP but I guess taxes/import costs?

£ to $ is the standard pricing for most keysets run in the UK because of import/taxes and shipping. It's unfortunate but that's the UK for you.
In regards to samples, 9u was chosen for other reasons mostly because of how purchasing samples works and because a 9u has the most room for defects. The 1us that I have are from other tests (doubleshot ect) they're not indicative of the product other than the outside shell which is perfectly clear and feels great, others have received similar caps from SP grab bags.
The kitting was made in such a way to accommodate the majority of standardised layouts at the best prices when the kitting was original conceived I wasn't sure of the popularity of this project and I just wanted to make the pricing as affordable as possible for the most people.
For any future GBs depending on how well this one goes a more expanded kitting lineup is something on the cards.

Thank you to all who have purchased/shown interest so far.

based on the sample pics they're probably gonna be pretty shiny and smooth out of the box

Picked up DCS clear from pimpmykeyboard, and I gotta say, I see why you didn't post samples of any 1u caps. The double shot moulds don't look very smooth underneath the top surface heh. Pretty renders though.

One possibility could be that I'm trying to mislead people so I can have a massive backlash at the end of the groupbuy.

Or it's because my 1us on hand are from experiments with doubleshotting polycarbonate. Like this keycap that is polycarbonate and glow in the dark material for the legend shot.

More

I omitted the images because they're projects that are only tangentially related and because I thought that the 9u spacebars would be sufficient.

Different manufacturer, also part of the reason I got protos to hopefully assure people it will come out in such a way.

Is there a reason why you went SA profile and are you thinking of maybe in the future run different profiles? I know SA it's not for everyone since it's a much higher typing experience and some people hate it for games for example.

I'm on the edge, I'm too used to cherry profile and I don't want to spend 100€ to hate them, but I like how they look on the Ikki.

I'm on the edge, I'm too used to cherry profile and I don't want to spend 100€ to hate them, but I like how they look on the Ikki.

The reason is pretty simple, I like SA it's my preferred profile.
It does go a little deeper though, SP was capable of making this product and in this way for this profile. Other manufacturers haven't been and lots of the lower profiles have fins or the process makes a rougher top texture making the overall caps less clear.

If anyone is wondering about clarity, the SA Relegendables are the same material/process for this, Polyclear will be the same except with a stem.

Looks fantastic, like glass block.  I didn't imagine it would be this polished.  A lot of work goes into making and maintaining the the tooling finish required.

Looking forward to see what you put it on!

I will look into cherry profile but it's unlikely that it will give similar results.
