Wow, crazy ideal I really hope works out! Not a huge fan of the wide bezels, but that is something I can easily overlook because of the novel mounting system you guys are trying to put into place here. GL with everything moving forward!
I’ve actually been thinking of a maglev keyboard design for the last few months. Glad to see I’m not the only one to think of it lol. Looks awesome!!
Like the design, not sure about the big bezel and iso layout ;D
Between this and the Evolv I am very impressed with the innovation in the community this year. Also, the design is gorgeous. That bottom piece is beautiful and the thick bezels look stunning. Love the seamless frame, too.Under normal conditions neodymium magnets lose 1% force over 10 years. Unless as you stated some weird science happens. They should be fine. There are also "permanent" magnets, though expensive.
My only question here would be whether this MagLev implementation is susceptible to de-magnetization over time. Other MagLev applications I know of (japanese trains and computer fans) all use electromagnets to achieve suspension (that's why they're called EMS - Electromagnetic Suspension). This (I assume) uses permanent magnets, which can lose miniscule amounts of magnetism over time and can be completely demagnetized if exposed to a magnetic field of a reversed polarity. Temperature is also a factor in retaining magnetic properties. Is this something that was considered during the design process?
The magnets will support all the weight of the switches and keycaps?
Large Bezel + magnetic cushion + ISO = music to my ears!
You might need to write a few lines addressing the unmagnetizing possibilities and conditions?

Looks great! Those orange renders are amazing.
What's the reason for not having an upper-right key? Would love a standard layout or something special to go in that corner.
Everything looks great. As a Mac user though, I dearly wish you'd have a 1.25u-1.25u-1.25u bottom row. 1u WK (or ⌥ for Mac) is rather unergonomic for macOS usage.
From an innovation standpoint: Highly interested!
Design-wise: Well...

Each to their own :D
We needed the bezels to house the magnets. The base is my favourite part
The Magnet lifespan was def considered. The Neodymium magnets we intend to use will only lose 1% of their repulsion force every ten years in this type of application. We will also share where the magnets can be bought from if anyone does accidentally expose their keyboard to a large electromagnet capable of damaging the mounting system.Great to hear. The possibility of just replacing the magnets completely alleviates any concerns I had about the mounting system. :)
it was a design affectation just for the proto, but as you can see on the plate we do have a key there. This is just an early IC so will have more details post the Prototype. (personally I think we will just end up with a key there)Personally, I would just engrave a little symbol resembling the schematic of a magnetic field. Something similar to this:
Could i ask what the expected front height is please?
I believe we can start calling the aesthetic of Jae’s boards, the JaestheticTM. Looks wonderful. Can’t wait to see and hear the prototype.Jae + chunk = Junky or maybe Jaenk

When I need to delete text, I tend to just throw my finger to the upper left for Backspace without looking.
This often backfires when I use a 65% because I sometimes hit the key to the right of Backspace instead.
A logo there would be nice too.
We have completed multiple iterations of the board, and some working examples of how the mounting will work. Whilst there is too many iterations to share in the IC..Could you share at least one of them? In my opinion two wooden boards in a weird perspective and in gif form isn't a great format how to show a proof of concept.
..believe in the potential of this board to deliver a new and innovative solution to the market..What's the problem with just gasket mounts, and what's problem are you trying to solve?
Well in my opinion this hobby is just chasing the useless and novelty. There is no real use for a gasket in a keyboard but we enjoy it. I think magnets will just be another step for us to get even cooler stuff!QuoteWe have completed multiple iterations of the board, and some working examples of how the mounting will work. I don't mean to sound too negative or skeptical but I personally don't see the usefulness of magnets, though I would love to see the prototype!
I was wondering when someone would bring out a magnet held plate... interested
Really cool concept looking forward to seeing the protos before I judge it. Though, I will say that having a corner blocker without any logo or anything there kinda looks weird. I would rather actually have something there, or just put a key there instead. Something about it being blank, in addition to the large bezels just seems a bit weird to me.
Very interesting concept. Given how popular split backspace is on 65% boards (and in general), will this board have a split backspace option? Either in the form of a fixed plate, or as an option on the existing ANSI plate.Layout choices not fully decided as yet - but I'll def keep it in mind.
Would love to see it at a lower type angle like 3-5°.
Wow, this thing is really cool!
Will different strength magnets be available as options to customize the feel, or perhaps will the magnets be a standard off-the-shelf part so that would be possible?
Also, I was curious if you had any estimate on how much force it takes to bottom the plate out? It's kinda hard to tell how hard it's being pressed in the proof of concept.
Wouldn't you need a fully loaded plate + actual typing to be a proper "proof of concept"? The weight of a piece of wood with 1 finger pressing down surely is nothing in comparison to real-world typing demo? They said they'd post stuff when the prototypes were in.
I love the idea & design though & I hope you manage to make it work on a functional plate with switches etc.
I on the other hand don't really care about the magnetic mount system, but I'd get it for the design only.
So few options out there for few of us who like bezels.
What about an encoder at the top blocker?
Love the concept and your work always seems top notch!
Too bad mechanical watches and strong magnetic fields dont mix well otherwise I would love to join.
The growing diversity is only going to grow the hobby even more! :thumb:

Doesn’t it take like a more powerful magnet to interfere with electronics though? Like an electromagnet?
A mechanical watch, either hand wound or automatic has no electronic parts.
But certain elements of the movement, e.g. the hairspring can get magnetized which results in the watch speeding up or running irregular.
For most current watches these magnets shouldnt be able to magnetize the watch, but vintage watches with worn down plating might get affected.
The lack of a second right-hand modifier key is a big turn-off for me, and is the main reason why I didn't jump on some notable 65% boards that I otherwise likedDitto. As an Adobe Creative Cloud user I just can't imagine having a board without the right-hand side ctrl and alt keys.
Would you consider using a more traditional 1.25–1.25–1.25–6.25–1.25–1.25 bottom row instead of 1.5–1–1.5–7–1.5? The lack of a second right-hand modifier key is a big turn-off for me, and is the main reason why I didn't jump on some notable 65% boards that I otherwise liked (Koyu springs to mind).
Could i ask what the expected front height is please?
It comes in just under 18mm (17.89 to be exact) :thumb:

Thanks a mill for the response.
Looking forward to the GB and hope I manage to snatch one.
PS: If the orange colour is made. Can I vote for it to be called Datsun Orange please :)

Which sun? lololol jk. The renders kinda look like the Maserati orange to me, but I like the idea of Datsun Orange better
Looks amazing, any estimate on pricing?

This is extremely interesting! The only thing I really don't like is the missing key in the top right corner.
Yay, awesome!
Also, thinking about it a tad more, I'm concerned about the feeling being just like a top mount if the magnets are too powerful... Do you plan to propose different force of magnets? And how will you avoid the rattle between the plate and the housing if the plate has to move a little?

As addressed later in the thread we are experimenting with multiple top cases so there will be other options as well.

This back case design reminds me of those Lumina LE's that we never got. :D
Ugh - the memories.... I’d kinda forgotten about just how many I was owed...
Just to be clear, 100% Tes free boards here - this is all original from Flex and I
Yay, awesome!

There is a gasket above the plate. There has been a lot of math done on the magnets/ load/ repulsion / typing forces to come up with what we believe is a good range. The prototypes will enable us to test those ranges and confirm what we have interpreted from the math

it's not the above the plate that concerns me, I read about the gasket, but rather on its sides
Hey folks - small update.
Got the proto's in, and both Flex and I have used and had a play with them. We are both really excited about the way it works, but the prototypes did highlight some things with the design that we want to fix.
Right now we have a revised Proto being made to test the changes - after all, this is why we prototype! Once those are approved, Salvun will be machining the final pre-production model which is where you folks may see a Build stream or two :D
You can see some of the proto pictures here:

Do you plan to have vendors in EU?
Is there going to be any shielding that stops the field from extending outside the case? Whilst unlikely to be harmful to anything, it might be annoying to have random things like pen lids or paperclips stick to the casing. Overall probably just a quirk and not a big deal.
Will there be any hot swap option?
man would have loved a hotswap option as i feeling like indulged in soldiering enough.. i'm now really looking for a premium with wide bezels 65% kb with hotswap :(M65-B by Rama seems to fit the bill. Might be some extras for sale in a few months.

I would love to try this mounting system, but can't do the chunky bezels. Hopefully it will turn out good and a more traditional shaped case with a similar mounting system will come out in the future. Good luck.
Will Salvun be doing the manufacturing of the GB?

The thick bezel is what drawn me into this ! And MagLev of course !
Hoping to see some unusual color ...for the unusual mounting board :))
Oh and +1 Vote for WKL Top option
Very interesting mounting! Typing test when?
Hey guys. Any more updates for us?
...
Right now thats a slow process as Flex is in the process of QC and shipping of his FLX Virgo board, so I'm keen to give him time and space to keep up his solid work ethic on those boards.
...
are the bezels super thick to accommodate the magnets?

Bezels are needed for the maglev system - it wouldnt work with our implementation with narrower bezels sadly

Things had gone quiet here and on Apogee, so I was preparing to be disappointed.Apogee is alive too.
I used to day dream about having the perfect keyboard, and in my imaginations, the board had magnetic levitations. Really hope this turns out well.
This is a really cool concept. I'm mildly curious about the magnets affect on the circuits though. No induction with static (not moving), permanent magnets... And you have little moving parts around.
There probably shouldn't be any appreciable induction occurring but I definitely wouldn't try this with a hall effect switch.
we are still working on this in the background as per my last update but we are both busy with other GB's at the moment so progress is slow until those are underway
We are both still super excited to share this with the community though
ah but the magnets ARE moving when you press down on the top plate. Just not very much. Also they're not moving through a coil so it's not going to do anything. However neodymium magnets might be enough to screw up the function of a hall switch, but that's a moot point since this board doesn't support Alps anyway.
someone mentionend a stream that had this board, is this true? is there some prototype to see?
ok found thanks, and I'm liking it! can't wait the typing test!

MagLev seems really promising. I sincerely hope you guys will be able to accomplish this. Good luck!
Any chance y'all had the idea of a 60 or TKL with a hotswap ANSI or bottom row Tsangen layout? That would be perfect for me.
So yes, there is kind of an update
We've had proof of concepts for over a year, Working Prototypes since April 2020, but a lack of time since. The big challenge is for Flex and I finding time between day jobs, ongoing Group Buys and other projects to make the final revisions.
Case design - 95% done
PCB design - 95% done
Final R&D - 80% done
Some final tweaks needed and a range of materials to test for mounting options, a final round of prototypes to manufacture and then we will look at next steps
We are planning to look at this early this year
This board remains strongly attractive to me.

Get out.
Also, love the board, looking out for more updates!
Like the thick bezels and I think the top right blocker looks nice and helps it look different from all the other 65% keyboards out there
The top half of the design feels a little uncanny to me. Not even the bezels but the missing top right 1u key with nothing replacing it and a distinct lack of character make it seem slightly unfinished.
The top blocker was a miss communication turns out we each thought the other wanted it :-[ .
Blocker is likely to go tbh - if you see the plate file it has a key there.
Just watched the stream, I am extremely impressed! This is probably the most interesting board I have seen. I really hope the GB will be unlimited so I'll get to try this innovative mounting method and the new typing experience.
Is it time for an update? or should we have a moment of silence for a dope board we'll never see?

This looks like a really interesting board - it's crying out for an exploded 65% look and think it would compliment it greatly. A badge would be nice in that top right corner. Keeping an eye on this one :)
Look's super interesting can't wait for more info!I was under the impression it would levitate above the desk.
(Also is there any reason for the lack of feet on the bottom?)
I'm not sure why this got resurrected randomly, but on Jae's Twitch streams he's alluded to the fact this is likely delayed indefinitely and may not ever happen because he and Flex haven't made contact for a while.
(Edit: You can ask him on his streams for yourself.)
