QFR Mod Plans
« on: Wed, 06 November 2013, 19:43:13 »
So I've currently got a stock QFR. Soon I'll be ordering some Black Otaku PBT Key-caps and some 40A-L O-Rings. I was also going to add some weight to my keyboard to make it stick more solidly to desks.(not that it's bad at sticking to desks. It's excellent.)
Anyways, I can't decide what to do with my case. It's rubberized and I really really like that, but I'm thinking about maybe painting it either pure black to be stealthy with my blank black key-caps or a vibrant lime-green because it's my favorite color. I'm inexperienced with painting so I'm not sure if I should risk my rubberized finish on a newbie paint job. I also have many pets, so hair and dust are a real threat to my paint. Any input from keyboard painting veterans that can shine some light on what the pros and cons of different types of paints, colors, and textures are as far as dirt, fingerprints, and dust are concerned would be greatly appreciated (long-winded sentence, oh well). The last thing I want is a sticky, tacky, hairy, dusty keyboard.

Lime green is always fun. Take a look at photoelectric's painting tips thread.

You can order replacement case tops from GH (see mkawa).  I think they are like $5 each, so you can experiment - do one black and one green!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That's not a bad idea. I didn't realize that they are as cheep as water. I might just buy 1 and just re-sand it over and over until I finally get a good paint job.
