Title: Russian keycaps
Post by: tipo33 on Tue, 31 January 2012, 16:25:50
Does anyone know where to get Russian keycaps for Cherry MX switches?  I have done a Google search (in Russian and English) and all I can come up with is the stickers :(  Paying US$5 per custom keycap from WASD is a bit steep.  I also own a model M and if i could get Russian keys on either I would be happy.

In Soviet Russia, key caps you!

On a more serious note, I would say WASD or look for vintage Cherry sets on deskthority. Or just use ANSI key caps and switch to ЯВЕРТЫ.

I looked a long hard time for them too, and one of my Russian friends came through for me on some doubleshot and dyesubbed set. They really aren't easy to find. If you don't mind lasered of engraved there is always WASDkeyboards, and the easiest option. Otherwise happy hunting, MX ones I've never seen on ebay, but I don't know if some domes might be compatible cap wise. Lots of ALPS ones though.
Regarding WASD, if you want a whole set, it isn't $5 ea cap, it's $10 set up for custom art using one of the .svg files he has on the site, here (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/custom-keyboard-options/custom-option-upload-your-key-design.html) plus the cost of a blank set if I understand correctly.

Off to deskthority...

You know I've seen LOTS of ALPS and Cherry MX Russian caps but never IBM.  Cold War period hangover?

I would be willing to purchase an ALPS board just to use Russian caps.  Where have you seen them?

I meant that the probability of finding Cyrillic caps on deskthority is higher, since geekhack users are predominantly from the US, but that doesn't mean that on DT people are selling double shot Cyrillic boards left and right.

What's with the influx of Russian users at GH lately, I don't feel like a unique snowflake any more.

Perhaps we are getting close to groupbuy. A lot more people have expressed interest in Russian or some other Cyrillic based layouts recently.
Thing is, to make it best for prices, would need to do a flat profile. That way it is easy to use the same set for Russian, Moldovan, Serbian, Bulgarian, etc since they all have many of the same characters but in different places. Maybe include Greek as well, since has many of the same characters too.

I will just have to keep a lookout...  Until the group buy,  count me in.

Hah, if it's flat, and in a good colour, I'd maybe get a set!

Sounds like a great idea, too bad not too many Moldovans use the Moldovan Cyrillic alphabet.

Thats true, most Moldovans use Latin as their primary, or in Transnistria region speak Russian mostly. But might as well throw in that Ӂ and have it covered...
For color I suppose just a basic white/black set. If it was some color, probably less people would want it.

Or orange like the secondary Cyrillic pad-printing on some Cherry double-shots. Problem is, does SP have flat profile PBTs? And do we need SVGs for the actual legends? This could get expensive very fast.

That sounds soooooo expensive via SP

Just standard PBT through them with no legend fees is ridiculous already

I asked them about it before, and if I remember correctly they had a font, or something about using a custom font. It was an extra fee, but just once for the whole set, not $25 each key.
They do have PBT in DSA flat profile. Which is the profile I think would be best to use for these.
But I agree, doubleshots is more economical. I would love to do them in orange on white personally, but not everyone likes orange.

custom fonts, was quoted to me at $10/per which will rack up quite fast ;x

Post by: IvanIvanovich on Wed, 01 February 2012, 19:20:37
Well it wasn't a customer specified font, but one of their 'custom' fonts. But I have noticed they sometimes tell different people different prices for the same questions... It's possible I don't remember correctly also.

I doubt anybody would really want to go through WASD. People want dye-sub PBT or double-shot ABS, not lasered ABS. No need for a GB through WASD either.

Beh, it could look worse, there are some alignment issues, etc. They look a little better in person. Still they came off some 80's Soviet Zilog clone machine... and they only cost me like $10 and were new.

KBC/Ducky can make russian PBT keycaps. Even with PBT spacebar, if you want it so much!
But you can use your "English" PBT spacebar either, don't you?
Yeah, there is a little problem:
Quote
it needs Minimum Order Quantity for production.
In other words - it should be massive group buy.
Maybe Imsto can handle producing russian set with new thick dyesubs and not so many people order.

Actually, I'm sure you can speak russian here, guys :D

We'll just have to make a large order, then. That, and pretend we're an OEM. Do you think 7bit would qualify?

Pssh kisa, you're balling enough to get some legit Cherry Russian keycaps, Not sure if they're double shot or triple shot, since Cherry's pad printing/dyesub is top notch but it does look like triple shot to me

I conclude they are insanely rare. I looked for one of them for MONTHS... found a few sites with the correct model G80/1-****H***RA/RB/RD/RG/ but never any in stock. I would have even settled for laser version, couldn't even find one of those in g80 or g81, just useless incompatible g83 boards. All of the Russian ones legends are pad print as far I have found.
Also the old models HAR/HAV but never found one of them either until AFTER the ebay auction, and went for like $200+.

I should have said, all of doubleshot Cherry ones with a 2nd Cyrillic legend I have seen is pad print. Same goes for other layouts that they do on top of US/UK/DE boards. I did recall seeing a tripleshot something, but pretty sure it was some other brand, I think on ALPS.
