Hello and welcome to the Group Buy for The Gentoo!

GMK Hammerhead Dark on Blue with PVD sides, GMK Bingsu on White, GMK Botanical on Green, GMK Rudy on Black

Inspiration
The Gentoo is a penguin themed, 65% keyboard that is a clear successor to my previously released board, The Adélie. With The Adelie paying homage to my favorite types of boards, sub 60's, it excluded the number row. For some, this was a deal breaker and I can't say that I blame them.

"Gentoo" is the name of a different species of penguin and as the name of this board works two fold: not only is this board the "Gen 2" of its predecessor, the Gentoo penguin, as you can see here, is a slightly larger penguin than the Adélie which I find aptly describes the relation between this board and the last.

Hype! GLWGB, excited to try to snag one.

Super excited for this! Can you explain the difference between the standard weight and upgraded weight?

Great question. The standard weight configuration is a sandblasted brass with antioxidation coating which you can see on the white board, the "upgraded weight" is nickel-plated and polish finish which you can see an example of in the photo showing the internal weight on a black board. That is specifically the silver, while there is also a graphite option. A comparison photo will be posted when I have both of those options back in hand. At the moment, the silver is out with a streamer!

I assume the white case is with the silver pvd and  black case has graphite, right?

What are the dimensions of this board? Could you post the layout/picture for hotswap pcb?

That is correct, the black case is sporting the graphite PVD, the white case has Silver PVD.

There is a picture of the inside of the weight that looks  like PVD Brass, but the outside is sandblasted?

I would have liked to see an option for Gold PVD upgrade on the outside of the weight and the sides.
I don't think the Graphite works that well on green/blue and Silver is a bit boring for me.
Sandblasted brass looks pretty dull imo, but would look amazing with a PVD finish.

I think definitely silver pvd for me. Would you have more photos of the actual boards? Good to see the differences in the proto navy and the renders (?) shown in the IC. Marcia's stream of the navy one helped too. Specifically interested in see what the green actually looks like.

On Wednesday I was thinking about purchasing a PFU Realforce R2 as my first mechanical keyboard and by Friday I was ordering Albec13's Gentoo instead :)

Initially attracted to the navy case (and indeed the key caps that it was matched with in the photographs), I finally settled on forest green with brass sides (photo below). I ordered both printed circuit boards. I'm comfortable with soldering, but I'm curious about the alternative. Discussions about soldered versus socket circuit boards appear to be fairly polarised, and I'm interested in making a video about the subject, using my Gentoo as the context.

I'd appreciate suggestions on key caps that might go well with the case. I gather that a manufacturer called GMK is well-regarded, although most of the designers who have contracted with GMK appear to be talking about delivery in 2023. The caps in the Gentoo prototype photo below, except for the spacebar (GMK Hammerhead?), are GMK Botanical, which is sold out, including the re-issue. I would like to have switches and key caps in hand when the keyboard arrives, which I hope will be before the end of 2022.

Cheers

The keycaps on the board you pictured is GMK botanical, the spacebar is a TU3 spacebar from this link: https://www.originativeco.com/products/gmk-spacebars

While it is generally frowned upon by some, that keycap theme is offered by chinese(assumption) manufacturers in a few places it seems and would be an easy find googling for it.

Thanks very much. Great to know about those spacebars. Some of the keycap sets that I generally like could maybe use a dash of colour, and those spacebars are one way to accomplish that.

I'm quite open on keycaps for the Forest Green Gentoo and appreciate any suggestions people have. I just mentioned GMK Botanical because I was curious what you used in the photographs and figured that some others might be too. The set also helps illustrate the point in the previous sentence about availability.

[EDIT: I decided to order GMK Metropolis R2 keycaps, see post #35 below].

The photographs provide a rough idea of the case colours, but I'd like to get the Forest Green colour with more precision. Would it be possible to get a Pantone colour or similar? If it's handy, it would be nice to have a colour reference for the brass as well, but that's less important.

Thanks

I've gone ahead and ordered keycaps. A German dealer, Oblotzky, has GMK Metropolis (round two) available, and it appears that it's likely to be delivered this fall. I ordered the subsets Midnight and Turnpike, which are used in the Metropolis rendering below. I also ordered Blocks, which has alternative spacebars matching the red/orange and teal in the image.

The Creative Director at Novel Keys, Ryan Onyon, designed Metropolis. He's a graphic designer by training and I think that it shows in the character sets. As someone who's interested in typography, one of the attractions for me is that Metropolis has symbols that will work well for all of the keys that have a function other than writing letters, numbers and punctuation. It's aesthetically elegant. For a Mac user, which I am, symbols also dispatch a keyboard terminology issue. Besides, what's not to like about a set whose name brings to mind one of my favourite films, Fritz Lang's Metropolis :)

The Metropolis Midnight subset is inherently reserved, but Turnpike provides a welcome opportunity to introduce a little colour. I also purchased Metropolis's alternative spacebars. However, it may turn out that these are best used with Metropolis's more gregarious "Base" set.

The next question is whether Metropolis will sit well with Gentoo's Forest Green or whether I should ask for a change in case colour.  Depending on what Forest Green means, the match may be very good ... or not :) That's why I asked about the Pantone colour a couple of posts up. Abec13 knows the four cases better than anyone, so of course I'm interested in any views that he has on the Forest Green case with these keycaps.

Unfortunately I don't have the green in hand anymore. The color of the case was roughly based on 5477C as a suggestion of what the factory should go for. I never really compared the pantone to the board itself after it was in hand because I had little expectation for them to hit the bull's eye. What's more important is that I like the green they gave me and that it is repeatable.

Thanks. Recognising Abec's point that this was guidance for the manufacturer, this screen capture is from Pantone's website. It's not far off Abec's photos in post #1:

This is great to hear. Now that I've seen the Pantone, read your comment and had another look at the photographs that you made, I'm also satisfied that the Forest Green case is going to work nicely with Metropolis Midnight/Turnpike. Black, white or navy might be more "neutral", but that's not what I'm looking for.

It's good that I'm still happy with the case colour, because I had a remarkable exchange with Cannon Keys earlier today. In your position, I'd have a word with my organiser/reseller about how it's treating the customers for my product.

I thought that I'd give Cannon a heads up that I might want a change in case colour. Cannon not only said that it wouldn't consider that, but told me that my only alternative, if I was unhappy with the colour, was to cancel my order entirely and pay a 5% penalty, in my case $27 on a $537 order. It characterised the position that this would put me in as an "inconvenience".

In a perverse way, it's good that this happened after I made my order, because if I'd known that this is how Cannon is treating customers for your design I wouldn't have ordered Gentoo in the first place.

I'm attaching a screen capture of my exchange with Cannon because it defies common sense, and basic principles of customer relations, to the point that it's hard to believe that it took place:

286998-0

In a subsequent e-mail, Cannon provided an "explanation" that, two business days after the group buy closed, makes no sense, and indeed makes for amusing reading in light of what your post above says about where the process is at. This isn't Cannon being unable to do make a colour change, it's Cannon refusing to do it, complete with a repetition of the assertion that for me this would be a mere "inconvenience":

I did some research on your earlier projects and liked what I saw. Consequently, I'm going to continue with my order, although $27 will be a small price to pay if the exchange that I had today proves to be indicative of how Cannon treats its designers' customers. They should read a post that you made some time ago about maintaining a sense of perspective. Indeed, I think that Cannon's principals could learn a few things from reading Danny Meyer's Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business.

Got me a blue with silver PVD! Thanks for doing this :) Recommendations for keycaps that will look great with these? I'm waiting on GMK Moomin (not sure if it'll look nice), but blue samurais will probably be safe hehe

As I have it here, I really like GMK hammerhead dark

Thanks! Managed to cop a set from Novelkeys <3 CAN'T WAIT!

Everything is going to get made... Vendors are working on gathering their materials and submitting our orders soon. Thanks for your support on this one!

In a subsequent e-mail, Cannon provided an "explanation" that, two business days after the group buy closed, makes no sense, and indeed makes for amusing reading in light of what your post above says about where the process is at. This isn't Cannon being unable to do make a colour change, it's Cannon refusing to do it, complete with a repetition of the assertion that for me this would be a mere "inconvenience":

Should I even be engaging with this?  What is even going on here?  You entered into the group buy, you had to check that box knowing what it means to join a group buy, and these receipts are very reasonable and cordial.  This thread does not supersede the processes these middle men (vendors) along with Abec13 take to complete this project.  Let's play this game, for a sec, where we read between the lines of the reply of the mentioned vendor, and assume they are purposely not changing the order.  This vendor, indeed, could have already submitted their order and OP is talking about other vendors that still have yet too.  Beyond this point...it's a group buy...this is not Amazon.  There is risk for all parties in these transactions, and the vendors do what they do to mitigate this risk.  For you, you could have put in the order at the last minute rather than earlier in the hopes that you could change it later even though, I guess, your request is happening after the end of the group buy.

All in all, this just feels weird for so little.

To Abec13, I look forward to seeing your design come to life in my hands and to us that are willing to put up the money to see that happen in the first place.

you had to check that box knowing what it means to join a group buy...

I'm not part of this hobby, and indeed didn't know that it even existed until late last week. I'm just a guy who has a new Mac computer and thought that I'd try using a keyboard that isn't made by my computer's manufacturer. As my first post in this thread says, between last Wednesday and the weekend I went from considering a PFU Realforce to ordering Abec13's Gentoo. I'm responding to your post because my response may be of interest to others who, like me, are not engaged in collecting keyboards. As will become apparent in this post, your comments don't exactly make me more at ease with this transaction.

We're coming from very different directions. I'm talking about common sense and good relations with current and potential future customers. However, I'm happy to address your desire to approach this legalistically. The terms at time of purchase don't say what you apparently think they say.

The box that you're talking about reads as follows: "I understand that this is a group buy or preorder product, and have read the shipping estimate and disclaimers below."

The "disclaimers below" say this:

Quote
This is a Group Buy, and Group Buy terms and conditions apply. The estimated date of delivery is just that - an estimate. Delays and setbacks may occur. Upon purchase, you will be charged immediately. And by purchasing this item, you acknowledge everything stated above. There are no refunds or cancellations for this order. For more information, check out our FAQ.

This is what the FAQ says:

287064-0

There is absolutely nothing in the foregoing that prevents the kind of request that I was considering. Interestingly, a change in colour would likely have been accompanied by a request to purchase case sides that would have added US$100 to the bill. Cannon has effectively said that it wouldn't entertain that either, and that my only option would have been to cancel the entire $537 preorder. If so, we're talking about a vendor that is in the business of reducing its, and Abec's, revenues. For me, that's a first.

On the related issue of cancellation, I also note that Cannon's position is rather murky. On cancellation, in one place it says that it will refund nothing and in another that it will refund 97% until the funds are sent to "the manufacturer", after which it will refund 95%. In its e-mail to me on Monday, Cannon said that it would refund 95%; although, with six vendors in various parts of the world, and a group purchase that ended at midnight on Saturday, it's rather unlikely that my funds had already been sent to "the manufacturer", whoever that is, by Monday morning, when my e-mail exchange with Cannon took place.

As I understand it, perhaps incorrectly, Cannon is the lead vendor, presumably not what is meant by "the manufacturer". Nevertheless, it appears to lack basic information on the product. I also tried to get the Pantone colour from Cannon, and got the response below. Unless one knows about this forum and thread, I have no idea how one is supposed to contact the designer, who in a thread about a previous project suggests that requests for information should generally go not to him, but to the vendor, in this case Cannon. I do thank Abec13 for his post above and comments about colour. It addressed my concern. On the other hand, my exchanges with Cannon leave me with the impression, reinforced by this email, that it just doesn't care about customer interest in design. In every exchange with Cannon, my design concern was characterised as an "inconvenience":

287070-1

Billy, I gather that you are a keyboard collector and that you think that Cannon's dealings with me are perfectly normal. That's cool, but if these are the expectations of people in your hobby, I'll be staying well away from the whole scene once this transaction is completed. There seems to be an attitude that I should regard paying $537 for a Gentoo keyboard as a privilege, an attitude that rubs me the wrong way. Your post mostly increases the attractiveness of another option: sticking with Ryan Onyon's Metropolis keycaps, and purchasing a keyboard that I can get now/this fall, not hopefully in Q4.

Cheers

It is very normal in GBs for vendors to refer questions to the GB starter, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

BTW where will updates be posted? Is there a Discord channel?

As everything else that is made to order, once you've ordered, you can't just change things up without any extra cost.

That being said, I'm super excited for this. Got blue with brass and FR4 plate.

Cannon Keys says that it will ship its Gentoos in the next two weeks. From Cannon Keys via e-mail yesterday, January 13:

Gentoo Shipping Soon!

Hi ____,

We are excited to let you know that Gentoo has arrived at our facilities! Units are currently being sorted, counted, QCed and packed by our fulfillment team in preparation for shipping. As this will take some time, we expect to ship your order within the next 1-2 weeks!

If you have moved to a new address since making your order, you can use our self service portal to get your address updated! Please note that once a shipping label has been created for your order, we will no longer be able to make any changes to it.

We look forward to getting these in to your hands very soon - thanks!

CannonKeys's e-mail of January 13th (post #58, four above) says that Gentoo keyboards will be shipped by tomorrow (Friday, January 27). The CannonKeys website window below says by Saturday.

Has anyone received their keyboard, had notice of shipping or a further update?

I've asked CannonKeys via e-mail whether I can expect shipping tomorrow, and I'll update here when I get a response.

Further to my post #62 (two above), CannonKeys has sent the following response to my e-mail. They plan to start shipping early this coming week:

Hi there and apologies for the delay.

QC'ing the boards and weights ended up taking us longer than expected and so we haven't shipped out your order yet. We should begin to fulfill and ship Gentoo orders early next week.

Here's hoping that CannonKeys starts shipping Gentoo keyboards tomorrow. Shipping from Rhode Island to NY City, where I am, should be next day delivery.

When I receive my components, I'll post some photos if others haven't already done so:

CannonKeys e-mail this morning saying that my order is shipping. Delivery is by the US Postal Service, Priority Mail, which says that a shipping label has been created. My keyboard only has to go from Rhode Island to NYC. If it's given to USPS today, as I expect, I should receive it tomorrow. The items that I ordered are shown in the post just above.

As of 9 p.m. EST, it appears that CannonKeys made a shipping label this morning, but hasn’t delivered my order to the post office.

Following CannonKeys's e-mail this morning (post #66), the USPS web page has shown what’s below since about 10:30 a.m. (the time on the form of 2:20 p.m. is wrong, a glitch).

I'll update when the USPS page changes.

Pawtucket, Rhode Island is about 180 miles from me, so I should receive the keyboard the day after ConnonKeys gives it to the post office.

[REVISED]

As of 9:29 p.m. EST, USPS says that my keyboard has arrived at the Providence Distribution Center. Next stop is New York City. While USPS says to expect delivery by Saturday, the distance is only about 180 miles. If the package leaves Providence tonight, I may well receive it tomorrow.

According to the screen capture USPS "accepted" the package in Pawtucket from CannonKeys or its agent tonight at 8:14 p.m.

Evidently you're wrong. This thread has had 385 views yesterday and today. There's a comment above that specifically disagrees with you. By the way, my name isn't "dude", at least among people with basic manners.

Given that in the last while you've asked twice about delivery timing for this keyboard, it's amusing that you're complaining about someone who's provided info on status after CannonKeys missed its delivery window.

As stated above, I'll be posting some photos when I receive the keyboard, probably tomorrow, or do you have a problem with that too?

I'm certain that I'll have the keyboard and components tomorrow. Just wanted to post status from "we're a bit behind and should start shipping early next week" until the order actually left Rhode Island. If my experience is anything to go by, some people may find that there's a delay of a day or so between "your order is on its way/creation of a shipping label" and actual shipping. Perhaps better to know that than wonder what's going on.

As mentioned, I'll post some photos on receipt if nobody else has.

I'm very happy with the colour and the finish. In the photos, I haven't tried to match the colour perfectly. I'd say that it's a bit darker than these two photos suggest.

Further to posts 80 & 81 above, I wanted a little colour and decided to try GMK Metropolis R2 keys. I wasn't sure about the choice because the Gentoo examples that I saw were more conservative. However, it looks like the combination will work well as long as I'm sparing with the brighter colours/don't go overboard.

Looks very nice. Green FTW!

It looks very smart. The contractor that Abec13/CannonKeys hired to make the case and do the finish did a very nice job.

Excited for my keyboard to be delivered soon. Will any extra PCBs, plates, or weights be available for purchase?

I'm glad you got yours I'm still waiting on mine!

Does anyone know if there's a Gentoo build/review coming up on YouTube or Twitch? Channel?

Thanks

If there is it would not be anything planned by CK or myself, would be of streamers on their own accord.

Excited for my keyboard to be delivered soon. Will any extra PCBs, plates, or weights be available for purchase?

I'm certain there will be some extras, there is no clear date on when though.

Some comments on using the VIA app with a Mac computer and the Gentoo...

I have an M1 Mac Studio with MacOS Ventura 13.1. VIA is offered as an online app and as a downloadable desktop app. If you use the Safari browser, as I do, you have to install the desktop app.

The Arm-based STM32 microcontrollers on the two versions of the printed circuit board, solder and hot-swap, are apparently pre-flashed with the Gentoo firmware and work with VIA out of the box. No need to use QMT Toolbox.

Be sure to use a USB-C data cable, not just a USB-C power cable, to connect the PCB to your computer.

The first screen capture below shows the VIA Configure page. I connected the hot swap PCB to my Mac and VIA recognized the PCB immediately (red arrow).

The second capture shows the VIA Key Tester being used to test, before assembling the keyboard, whether all of the electrical connections on the PCB are working. Turn on "Test Matrix" (bottom of the screen capture). I used a paper clip, after burning off a bit of the paper clip's plastic coating at each end, to make the connections. Tweezers are less fiddly, but mine weren't handy. All of the keys changed colour from grey to pink, meaning that I could go ahead and assemble the keyboard. I have both versions of the PCB and tested both at the same time. If there's a problem with one of the PCBs I want to know that now, not down the road when the PCBs are no longer available.

I'm trying to update my gentoo 65 to a vial firmware I compiled...That has not worked.

So I wanted to try to update the gentoo with the via firmware that is on the via website to try to eliminate any errors on my end. I tried that with different OS's, cables and firmwares.

Outcome of attempt on MacOS firmware upgrade (both with via and vial firmwares): First pic.

In Windows, the keyboard doesn't go into DFU mode when holding Esc key and shows this error: second pic.

I tried different cables (as well as different OS's and firmwares) and the outcome is kind of similar.

Hi Harry,

If you haven't already, you might try QMK Discord. It's quite busy, and there are people who know what they're talking about and who are generous with their time. There are specific channels called help-via and help-flashing.

In Windows, the keyboard doesn't go into DFU mode when holding Esc key...

I don't know anything about Windows or your issue, but I thought that I'd mention the reset button and toggle switch on the bottom of the printed circuit board. The QMK Github page on the Gentoo65 says that the toggle switch should be set to 0 to go into bootloader mode, followed by briefly pressing the reset button. See photo below. The photo shows the hot-swap PCB, but that isn't material. The yellow arrow points to 0 on the toggle switch, red arrow to the reset button. I don't recall what the page says about the Escape key as an option.

My apologies if this is not useful information.

I've got mine and was able to build it to completion.  I've used mill max sockets on the solder keyboard and I'm rocking a split back space with a 7u space bar.  Got all the keys mostly configured and I'm liking it so far.

An additional update, I felt like the case was too resonate for my taste.  I added some tape in between the top and bottom halves and this seems to have greatly reduced the resonance of the case.

Now owning the Gentoo and the Adelie, I feel like this board has been a step down in quality.  The Adelie looks and feels like a product of true affection for the form factor.  The fitment of the parts and the excellent attention to detail, the curvature matching the flat parts on the front and back.  The rock solid feel of the board along with the mild amount of flex as you're typing, and the consistent sound of each keypress top to bottom, left to right.  It's not perfect, no board is. The LEDs that indicate layers are just offset to the right angle that they shine directly through the caps and needle you in your peripheral.  I turned them off.  It was an expensive little board but I'm very happy with it.

I preface my comments about the Gentoo with this: I'm keeping the board.  I paid for it and I'm going to enjoy it despite its flaws.  I like 65% just as much as the other form factors in my collection and it's a pretty board, but just not as nice as the Adelie.  The fitment of the parts is not as well-done as the Adelie. Maybe this was intended to prevent collision of parts? I don't know.  But it doesn't have that "like a glove" look to it that other boards have achieved.  Use an Iron165 (or others) as an example and you see how tight those tolerances are. With this board, the top and bottom pieces have a gap that almost looks like gasketing was intended to go in between them. As I type, my thumbs dip down and touch the curvature at the front of the board.  It's almost a sharp border.  It makes me think costs were cut with CNC time by not having as smooth of a curvature to the flat areas.  Again with the Adelie it's pretty smooth, but not perfect.  Sound consistency? Maybe by row but not by column. More hollow near the number row, more solid by the spacebar.  I don't know what the solution is there, I used case foam to dampen the sound.  Didn't seem to help that much. Flex? I used a PC plate which was very flexy, of course.  Finally assembled there really isn't much flex because the PCB does not flex.  It's too thick.  Then there's the plate foam.  I think it was an afterthought and thrown in the mix simply to make more money.  As it was it prevented the stabilizers from returning properly and I had to make significant cuts.  If it had been tested prior to starting the GB those problems would have immediately been found.  Which sort of brings me back full circle over the entire thing.  I don't think this board was as much of a labor of love as much as something that was likely pushed by Cannonkeys, to make money.  I do not fault a company for wanting to make money off of products or services, but at the price point this board went for, far more attention to detail should have been done.  Testing would have made all of these issues plainly evident.  Maybe they were and the company that did the machining did a bad job and Cannonkeys just passed the buck along.  Speaking of Cannonkeys, branding is far more evident on the PCB.  So there's that? (I don't care about branding really).  65% is hot.  I get it.  It's hits the sweet spot for most people and the push for a business would be to take concept X and make it 65%.
Lastly, and this is not limited to the Gentoo alone, there's a bit of a disconnect lately between the hobbyist community and making solid build instructions. I don't know what it is but it's pure laziness not to. Even just taking 10 minutes to make bullet point instructions would be better than nothing.  I might lay that in Cannonkeys' lap this time since it's "their" board.

Yes this is a hobby and I'm not trying to extract blood from a stone with my review of the board, just express that the board was a bit of a let down compared to the excellent job done during Gen1/Adelie.

What an excellent review but equally, I went from looking forward to this board to.....meh.

If mine does arrive the same as yours with the same imperfections then from a consumer point of view, shame on CannonKeys and Gentoo for their poor performance this time over. Cutting corners when there is soo much competition just alienates me from getting another keeb from them in future.

If they were to cut corners, for the love of God, have sense to better price the units of the board. A £400+ board (with the extras), I will be gutted if this doesn't deliver on my expectations.

For now, I await patiently until it drops and hope it lives up to what I envisage this to be

I'd have to agree with helborne's comment. Now typing on the Gentoo after the build there's two things that really did irk me the most when you're talking about a $450 board:
    1.  The front curvature really annoys the overall quality and experience, and should have not been there and really depreciates the build quality. Never tried the Adelie, but I'll assume that this doesn't happen with the other penguin
    2. The bottom screws for the back row should have been much longer to accommodate the deeper hole. Looks to be that from CK where screw hole and screw design are shared for CK group buys to ease up the complexity, but it should not have been difficult at all getting two variants. The main reason and criticism on this topic was that due to the screw hole feels as if the radius did not consider for the ecoating, the screws easily strips the screw hole for every screw/unscrew. Not only there's a feel that screw taps feels cheap and hard to screw in, which is almost the killer blow when we talk about quality.

Similarity, I'm obviously still keeping the kit, but it's a step down from what I would think an experienced KB and keyset GB runner should have produced in the end.
