How do you store your key caps sets?
« on: Fri, 16 February 2018, 12:45:25 »
When not mounted n your keyboards, how do you store your keycap sets?
In special boxes? Bags?
I wish there were special caps trays we could use, like with mx stems, so we could stick each cap in it and store this way...

While they're not exactly cheap, you can buy these:

Most of my sets are GMK, so I just keep them in their trays. The rest are in plastic bags. All of the trays and bags then go into a big plastic bin.

To say this topic comes up regularly would be an understatement!

After a quick search, I found a few links, copied here for posterity.

Happy reading! :D
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It's not so bad. When you take them off of a board, you put them on there. Or when you get a set from /r/mm, and you organize them to make sure you've got everything, you throw 'em on. ehh

I just keep them in the original packaging (i.e. the trays for GMK, bags for SP, etc).  Then I throw all those into a cardboard box.

Mine are in the cardboard boxes they came with in the mail. Inside the boxes there are either the bags or trays or whatever they sit in.

Need to find some better storage method, maybe just plastic cases with names taped on them. Would be nice to buy some glass jars to display the nice colorways in.

Sometimes I get really down when I think about how many sets I have but dont use. Just sitting in a box, waiting to be sold or traded :/

Definitely recommend them. Much nicer than storing them in bags, in a drawer. I have my unused sets on display on a book shelf.

Alternatively instead of buying one of those trays, why not an actual keyboard?

I try to typically keep a 1/1 ratio of keysets to keyboards/builds. That still does not remotely solve the issue because there is always an abundance of extra keys that aren't being used. I just keep the extras in labeled plastic bags and then throw them all in a storage container.

Well, I order 5 of those JTK boxes that are now on sale on Drop.
I picked Max version - these will be enough to take two TKL sets. Also, Max can take high profile caps, like SA, which is majority of my collection.

Once they arrive in April, I shall post photos how my caps land in them :)
