Resin Keycaps With RoastPotatoes
« on: Thu, 04 June 2015, 17:49:45 »
I have been experimeting with making keycaps. I followed KatzenKinder's guide to get started. I have only done blanks as I don't have any pbt caps to spare.

My table has suffered greatly in the process.

I only have blue pigment at the moment, which is why it is such a prominent colour. A little bit of red ink was used, however this made them turn out like wafers.

I haven't encountered many problems. But some caps have turned out mostly bubble.

Congratulations on early success!  It would be an interesting look, if you could get a whole board worth of color-swirled caps.  If you could manage to align the swirls, that would be a nice trick.  If you could get brown and dark brown swirls to line up and look like wood grain, that would be a *very* nice trick.

That would be incredibly nice but very hard.

Fn in use:

This is a broken one I was just using to demonstrate that they are working.
Fn Collection:

My favourite of these are the white with red flecks on top. I will get some better photos of these.

MX:

Quite a few bubbles and imperfections. Only a couple are really perfect.

Please tell me what you think.

These are looking great, the one on the left is my favourite, if it were in red it would look like a blood splat which would be better still!

These are my two current designs:

My initial intention was to get producing some nice creative designs as soon as possible. But I am still having trouble creating perfect casts.

Yellow test:

The cast was not that great, but the colour worked well.

How do you get the Heart model for molding? I mean did you use 3d printed sample or just use your hand work.

I hope it will give you enough motivation to have a go. With all the pictures I am getting I am hoping to create a guide to help beginners like myself.

I keep thinking about making caps, but I get to the warnings about exploding pressure chambers then go looking for a good one, find nothing but paint sprayers and realise it's late and I should go to bed.  In the morning I realise I'm not creative enough to come up with a good design anyway and forget about the idea.

I go through this cycle everytime I see a new person getting good and now you've mastered doubleshot arms you've joined the list - bedtime is still hours away so maybe tonight's the night :))

Congratulations, these are looking better and better!  The faded-corners ones in the top row make me think again of wood grain switches.  I don't have an idea of how you are applying the colors, but it occurred to me that a paintbrush for surface lines and injecting the rest, might be a way to get some kind of stripes.  It's just an idea, not a suggestion.

Whilst that sounds like a good idea I think that will kill the brushes. I am currently using ink pens that have variable width. They somewhat allow you to use the resin like ink for a short period before it starts to gel. I do have a very strong tub of chemicals somewhere that gets fibreglass resin off paint brushes so that might work on brushes. I will have to look into it.
