You seem to misunderstand the whole purpose of security checks at the airports. This is not a punishment. Whatever the reason someone is flagged for more vigorous check, he is NOT being accused of anything and he is NOT being punished for anything. In the absence of specific intelligence, the most efficient method of allocating inherently limited resources is to prioritize passengers according to ANY statistically significant characteristic. For example, based on numerous past incidents, and OPENLY MADE threats of future attacks, people who are Arabs and/or Muslims are much more likely to try to blow up or hijack the plane than people who are not Arabs and/or Muslims. This is a statistical fact, not an accusation of any particular Arab or Muslim.
I'll give you another example. If there was a murder and witnesses say the perpetrator was black, would it be okay for police to only detain for questioning black people found in the vicinity, or would you like the police to detain white people as well in order to avoid "racial profiling"? In our case, the future perpetrators themselves are openly threatening to attack us again, just as they did before. And the people saying this are not hiding the fact that they are Arabs and Muslims. Why the hell would we check everyone else equally? Because otherwise we would heart the feelings of innocent Arabs and Muslims? How about the feelings of innocent blacks in my example? Yet you think in that case it's okay...
It seems we've both misunderstood the other then. I was not talking specifically about racial profiling and making everyone feel equal except for my last post to you. My main issue is the fact that this is only security theater, and they have never stopped an actual terrorist from boarding a plane. It does not actually make anyone safer; it's a gross waste of money with nothing to show for it.
I went to Boston this past weekend. On the way up I left BWI at 655. At 6am in the security line I had to wait nearly an hour with maybe 6 or 7 security lanes open. They were putting many people through the scans; black, white, asian - the only Arab guy there walked right through the metal detector while I, a US citizen from birth, went through the scanner. I was escorting a Chinese exchange student with a passport from China who was sent through the metal detector while I had to go through the scanner. They're not targetting the statistically significant people or whatever you like to call them, they're targeting everyone.
On my way back, the same happened, except for the fact that the metal detector was not being used and EVERYONE was being sent through the scanner. A line of 5 people turned into a 15 minute wait. Why is that even necessary? This mother had her and her 12-ish year old daughter opt out because she 'didn't want any man looking at naked pictures' of her daughter. Personally, I think that's a bit silly, but at least she didn't videotape it (having your 6 year old daughter get a pat down just so you can videotape it is wrong, IMO).
I don't like the scanners. You may like them and think they're doing a fine job. Truth is they haven't changed anything except make lines longer and make people feel uncomfortable; the TSA haven't stopped any security threats except for soccer moms with tweezers in their bags.
