Tad Williams' books have a perfect height for repairing Model Ms (my wooden construction is not here, as always: the tools I need are not were I need them)! Anybody read Tad Williams? And not only Tolkien?

I bought a full sized Model M found at a local craig list, in very good condition, almost no rivets broken (I counted only two, and the rest could not break off easily), German language, for my fathers birthday, I hope he likes it. I know that chances are low he will actually use it, but at work he could type on it just for a day as a show-off for the colleagues - "hey, this guy is bad-ass typing on this clunky old keyboard". He is journalist, and we always had a lot of typewriters at home.

A good backpack is the one were a full sized Model M fits perfect inside:

madhias that's a really cool present I hope he loves it!

I'm about to go put another coat of grey paint on my model M top case. A little lighter than industrial I think. More of a battleship grey I guess.

It is.  It's actually a metallic gray color.  I think it is called soft iron.  Pretty nice complimentary color.
It looks good with the pearl/pebble.

It's not primer gray.  The shades from black to white can be called from extremely light to extremely dark gray.  The gray in mooksie's picture reminds of the primer I used below the flat iron.

It is from the brand 'EXPED', which is from Switzerland. Not too big, the size is OK for a daily usage.

I had a similar thing happen....  The clear coat I put over the shell was fine until it dried.  Every bit of paint shriveled up and destroyed what it looked like.  That's why there are no other pictures of it.

Kind of a shame.  I liked the color a lot.  It worked well.

Sounds like you should have scuffed up the plastic and used a good primer or direct-to-plastic paint.

Has anyone ever tried Plasti-Dip on a Model M case? I've seen some really nice smooth results with that stuff and I love the idea that you can peel it off and start over... just not sure about the finish.

Plastidip is the worst.  It starts rubbing off almost immediately and you have to regularly redo it for it to look decent.  Even if you put on a thick coat, it still gets issues.

A trick for plastidip is the first 2 coats need to be very thin.  This actually helps a lot with adhesion.  But coats after that can be thicker.  It does hide scuffs and scratches very well.

Can you weigh in on others' comments regarding durability? They made it sound like it wears off pretty quickly.

I have it on the plates of my hacked up AT.  It is delicate in the sharper corners, but since I put it on, I haven't had any issues with it.  It is difficult to do touch up work without peeling it all off and starting over though.

Suppose I shouldn't be shocked and awed that a product marketed as easy to remove isn't the most durable thing in the world. Thanks for sharing!

Did somebody say beam springs?

(Attachment Link)

Oooh that layout looks surprisingly usable.  If I were to ever get a beam spring, that would be my choice.

As much as I would love to try that layout, I didn't care for the beamspring switches I tried at the last con in Chicago.  The feel very light and smooth, I just lime the longer keystroke and heavier tactile bump in F style buckling springs.

Thanks! This is an approximation to the layout that I used. The latching Lock key limits my options at the moment.

it's amazing that such a classic design still looks great and is perfectly functional :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Sweet :)

But that's cable's far too white for the keyboard!

Time to finally show off my 'finished' model M.

In early March this year, I bought a Model M from Jixr on the cheap.

The keyboard was bolt modded, had a wonky membrane, and no cable.  I did a few mods to it.

I dyed the caps aqua colored.  I oriented the caps in the same direction in the bath, and that gave them a nice gradient.

I removed the old connector and added a Teensy for USB capabilities.  I actually went through a few Teensys in the process.  I had a Teensy 2.0, but while soldering it I damaged one of the resistors/capacitors and the socket.  I did some work on it with the Teensy 2.0+, but I am going to use that for another project.  I bought a Teensy LC, but the ARM processor was giving me ****.  So I finally went with another 2.0.

I also desoldered all of the old crappy green LEDS and resistors on the breakout board.  I put in their place some bright blue LEDs and appropriate resistors for them.

So here we go:

I have a BS Brobot from the 4/20 sale on the esc

and a pair of glorious multi-shot Krap bonus caps on the pause and scroll lock buttons.

I'm pretty proud of the usb connector.  I took the old DIN socket and ripped it all to hell with my Dremel.  I made little slots so the teensy board would slide in and super glued it to that spot.  I filled in the open area with epoxy clay so it looks fairly clean.

So that is my sexy modded Model M.
