[GB] H7 (173% PCBs) (Hyper 7) R2 - GB Completed
« on: Sat, 10 March 2018, 09:41:33 »
Welcome to the official Group Buy for the Hyper 7 inspired H7 (173%) PCB.

The buy will run for 7 days or until 30 orders have been met - due to the size we have to hand solder these and any more will likely cause timescales to overrun. If we still have significant demand we will run a Round 3 as well using the R2 design.

The interest check showed a number of people would be interested in a CNC case design - so this is continuing with Xondat in parallel but no further news on that front at the moment.

I'll also share the files for the wooden floating case design once the GB concludes - I have dimensions for the R1 PCB but as things are changing for R2 I'll need to re-draft once I have the first PCBs on hand.

Changes from R1:
 - Moved to three rows on the top daughter-board to closer match the original vision.
 - Re-aligned mount points
 - Some slight routing changes to accommodate 'Function' and 'Mode' LEDs for those two layers
 - PCBs will be Blue in colour

Pricing as follows:

PCB production, components & soldering (still requires switches and LEDs) - £120
Optional Steel laser cut plate with Mounting points (2 piece - one for the main board and one for the daughter board)  - £100

****Packaging is included, but shipping will be requested once production has been completed and all boards are on hand.

Production is likely to take 4 - 6 weeks, and on this thread there will be a link to the plan and sequence of events which I'll update each week.

Email address must be your valid invoicing address for PayPal.

Thanks again to 7Bit for the original theorised board and the Round 6 GB, and /u/Yiancar for being my wingman and PCB guru.

If you have any questions please post here :)

----------------------

11/03 - Now closed at 40 PCBs in total - R3 is being planned. Invoicing will begin tomorrow once I've finalised all details.

any questions just let me know!!

----------------------

12/03 - Invoices are now going out! All invoices issued - 38% paid

added KLE -

-----------------------
14/03 - 60% paid!!

-----------------------

16/03 - final day for invoice to be paid by 10pm Uk time - currently sat at 65% of payments complete. Final reminders have now been sent

-----------------------
17/03 - The good news all orders are in! About ten people dropped out of the GB or didn't complete the invoice, so technically we didn't make MOQ - but - I'm going to personally fund the rest (pls don't tell the missus as its her wedding dress fund!!).

As such the orders for both PCB's and Plates will be submitted and paid over the weekends.

Once these have been paid for I'll drop another update out to confirm and update the plan:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KFGsbgjQ80K1KrMycLISsef8O6CjZUPpNPQmlKeo6Dg/edit?usp=sharing

Invoicing for shipping will begin once I've received the parts and tested them. the shipping will be done in a bulk job lot and all go out in one day.

If anyone is thinking of attending the MKUK Meetup in May, and I have all the parts by then (which I'm really hoping to!) then we can arrange a handover there :)

--------------------------------
28/03/2018 - PCBs are well into production at the moment, and Plates have just started. Work has also commenced on the revised QMK port for the new layout and pin position as well as the actual keymap as well. Plan has been updated.

I'm not gonna get in on this but I cannot wait to see some more H7 builds, with a Xondat case no less.  Gonna be all kinds of wonderful. GLWGB.

Thanks man :) I still want your ST!!

Xondat is literally looking at the case as we speak and Oblotzky has also kindly offered some renders as well - here’s to hoping we can keep improving and iterating!!

Really not my format. But tbh. Basically way too awesome to miss out on.

I say not my format. I guess there's only a few people that have tried...

For this, you probably need negative firmware layers just to find uses for all the keys. :D
Current:
    Ducky DK9008P [MX Blues] | WASD V2 TKL [MX Blues] | r63 (Satan 60% DIY) [Gateron Browns] | BananaSplit 60% [Gateron Greens] | UK78 [67g Zealios] | Infinity ErgoDox [MX Clears] | Pearl 40% [78g Zealios] | G81-3000
Coming up:
DZ60/SKB60-WKL [100g MX Silent Blacks] | G81-3000 [Box Navies] Handwire
IC/GB:
GMK Strogg | G81/80-3000 MX metal plate

Its only a tiny bit different, like 24u wider...

Ha - actually just over 9 layers to try and emulate all the original space-cadet functions...

Thanks for making this happen folks!!!

Will this theoretical xondat case be compatible with the SS plate included in the GB? I ordered a plate,  but I’m wondering if that was a mistake

No, Xondats case would be top mounted I suspect, these plates are designed to keep the switches aligned in the floating model design.

If Xondats case does complete it will be a significant amount of time away and likely a large cost as well. Either way if you need to change your order you have about 15 hours till I start invoicing :)

Is there a keyboard editor with the key sizes by chance?

Additionally, is there any plans to come up with a GB to fill the keycaps? Trying to figure out what kits and how many of each to fill this board is making my head spin.

Yeah. I have a KlE file I can share. Gimme a couple of hours to get home and I’ll post it up :)

In terms of keycaps I’m looking at a potential DCS run, and have asked 7bit to add the keycaps into his next round as well.

Some people have messaged me with plans to do vomit sets and otherwise - and one guy has already mocked up a full DSA set.

Quick question, understand that the 2u keycaps don't have stabs and are actually double switches? Is this correct? this would mean we'd need custom keycaps for those as well?

Yeah i know this is a highly custom keyboard, just would like to check what are the parts required to get this keeb functioning. Thanks! :D

Correct they are 2u caps with double switches underneath called POS caps - SP sells blank 2u POS caps on PMK (at least they did not sure if they are still there) and you can also get them in DSA and DCS. I'm not sure about cherry profile

I’m also conscious I forgot to mention that all the switches can be used as 1u as well. It’s disabled for the leftmost switch on each 2u set on qmk but you could easily fill it full of 1u caps and edit the keymap

So at the moment we have about 65% of invoices paid, and about 5% have dropped out. Just a reminder that the deadline for paying invoices is 10pm tonight UK time - thats about 4 hours from the posting of this message - I'll send another reminder out via email to the participants yet to complete their invoices shortly as well

all the best!!

Apologies, missed your post! I’ve asked 7bit via PM if he is interested but no answer as yet.

That being said if there is no takers I’m thinking of running a compatible set in DCS profile potentially

I’m afraid so, but there may be a couple of extras at the end. I’ll add you to my list.

Failing that there will be an R3 after this one has finished.

I can't believe I missed this GB. I was waiting intently on the IC thread. Can you please add me to the extras list as well?

Yep. All added but it will go in order of those that have asked

I'd like to buy one. Is it too late to join?

I’m afraid so, but there may be a couple of extras at the end. I’ll add you to my list.

Failing that there will be an R3 after this one has finished.

Late to the party, you were even kind enough to email about it when this started and I somehow missed it. Could I get on that list, too?

Just a quick update on this:

I’m finally back from wedding/honeymoon and have this weekend just got hosting the UK Leeds meetup out of the way :)

All the PCBs and plates are at mine now and are sorted and sat on my desk. It weighs a ton and I’m worried for my desks safety...

Next step is to clean the plates down as they are mild steel, so don’t come cleaned from the factory, and once done I’ll clearcoat for those that have asked.

The PCBs have all been joined together (mainboard to daughterboard) and are currently going through QC and programming.

We have a revised base qmk keymap installed, and Work is still underway by Bit-shifter to optimise my original keyset and make the changes to support the different rows from R1.

Next steps are to await delivery of the individual shipping boxes, clean up the plates and send out shipping invoices. Once half the invoices are paid, I’ll ship those, then the second lot once all payments are completed. Shipping will be priced based on your actual weight and contents as a few people (looking at you Olivia!!) have some extra items being included.

I’ll post another update prior to shipping invoices going out but I’m hoping I can start that process next weekend.

Any more updates? Been a couple weeks since we've heard from you.

The Custom boxes have finally been shipped and I’m about 25% of the way through cleaning up the plates etc. I had planned on sending an update out this weekend as I travel during the week for work. As soon as I’ve got the plates ready (hopefully this weekend) and the boxes (hopefully Thursday looking at tracking) I can start the shipping invoices.

In parallel, the QMK files should be ready and added to the repo in the next few days too. Bit-shifter is just finishing up the much simplified keymap file to make it more manageable.

Apologies again for the delays in responding - been a few busy weeks in my personal life with wedding, holidays, running the Leeds meetup and Work - but I’m always happy to provide an update if anyone wants/ needs one :).

Everything is being shipped this week and next - its not looking likely for extras, but I've had a ton of interest so once these are all out an IC will be up for R3.

Most of my updates are to my fellow GB'ers by e-mail as I can't access GH from work etc, and it relies on me being at home to post here - I'll add the latest update in that went out yesterday tho underneath this post.

The good:
  • ALL PCB's are packed!
The Keymap is written and so are all the macros! - they just need functions attributed (more on that in a second).
Those of you that just ordered PCB's - Invoices will be out within the next 36 hours for shipping.
Those of you that ordered plates and PCBs - invoices will drip through over the next week as I pack your plate with your PCB orders.

The actions needed:
Folks, I need to finalise the keymap with bitshifter this week (the man is a legend)- so need as many of you as possible to complete two things:
Once finalised we will push this to QMK directly - so you'll be able to flash the final versions of the keymaps yourselves, relevant to your OS.

The getting better:
  • Whilst all the plates are drilled and clear-coated or primered, the paint has highlighted that my de-burring hasn't been great, so I'm tackling the afflicted plates with my new de-burring tool to make sure there are no sharp edges.
This WILL be completed on Sunday - I've booked the whole day out with the wife to get this done.

The bad:
  • Pretty soon I'm not going to have a reason to send out these updates!!

The next steps:
  • Finish the plates - due by Sunday
Invoice PCB only orders - due by sunday
Invoice pcb and plate orders - due within the next week
Arrange shipping - as soon as 50% of shipping invoices are paid
Write a guide on enabling Unicode in Windows - for the next update
Share my design for a wooden floating case - by next weekend
Pull request the keymap to QMK - by next weekend

Final notes:
I know my timelines and estimates have been a little off - and I want to offer my sincerest apologies and thanks for you all bearing with me whilst we undertake this endeavour together :) I'm truly honoured to share this crazy contraption with you guys, and I hope you will love it as much as I do. I can't wait to see the masterpieces you'll all create.

As always, any queries, questions, address changes or otherwise - please ping me and let me know.

Just a final note to say that all packages have now been shipped and at this point only 4 are remaining to be delivered.

Bitshifter is hard at work on the QMK PR and that should be done soon which will be the final update.

Thanks again for everyone that joined and supported me through the endeavour - you are all amazing.

And round 3... maybe an announcement on a stream soon...

Hey, that's excellent news!

Any chance this PCB would some headers for additional components? What If for example I want to add an RGB light strip, or connect something via I2C? Will extra pins on the micro controller(s) be made available in the design?

It would mean some major changes (and probably price increases) to the design of the pcb. Right now the board works off a single controller, but there was only one pin left to enable LEDs on the top panel board.

I’d have to remove those to give you an open pin for alternate use - or re work the board to have two controllers. I’ll ask my PCB guru for some more assistance on that as I’m referencing an old conversation at the moment. Once the vendor pops up the IC for Rev3 we can start to take a look.

It would be nice if we had a full compatible keyset in a sculpted profile like Cherry or SA to go along with the GB. The only one we have is DSA, wonder if there could be plans even for a cheapish compatible pbt cherry set.
