[IC] MurphPad - DIY Numpad Kit - Group Buy Info and Other Updates

IC Form

MechWild Discord

MechWild Site

GB Info

Dates: March 19th - April 11th
Price : 30 USD (prices may be ever so slightly different on the proxies' sites)

Proxies:
EU: FFKeebs
OCE/SEA: CustomKBD

Availability: Unlimited
Colors: Black, white

MechWild here again with another Pro Micro based through hole kit, this time it’s a numpad. Our previous product, the Mercutio, was a 40% board which is intimidating to a lot of people because there’s no numbers unless you make use of layers. So here you go, a little companion for your keyboard that does the numbers.

Renders
supplied by Reddit user Superalex051

The MurphPad is a numpad with a few extra features. There is a macro row above the typical numpad area as well as 2 keys adjacent to the numpad area. We are including a rotary encoder and OLED as well with this kit to squeeze in some extra functionality. And some of you might just want to use this as a macropad and we’ve thought of that too. The MurphPad will support an all 1u layout. If you’ve had your fill of knobs, you can use an MX switch in its place.

But wait, there’s more! If that still isn’t enough customizability, you can mirror the numpad layout.

KLE Layouts

Prototypes

Details
  • QMK & VIA compatible
  • Bluetooth support through ZMK
  • Estimated Cost: 30 USD

Included parts:
  • FR4 plates & PCB
  • Pro Micro
  • Diodes
  • OLED
  • Knob & Encoder
  • SMD LEDs
  • Reset button

For this group buy, because of the price, we’ll be asking for your region and finding vendors for your region if there’s enough interest. Regardless of what vendors we can get set up, we will be taking orders from anywhere and everywhere on the MechWild site.

FAQs

Q: Will this be available as a Kailh hotswap kit?
A: This kit will not support Kailh hotswap sockets.

Q: What kind of LEDs are supported for underglow?
A: We'll be offering SMD LEDs for sure and we might be adding in support for LED strips.

Q: Will there be Bluetooth support?
A: Yes

Q: 3DP or Acrylic case?
A: Yeah, probably.

Updates & Changes

  • Adjust the mounting points to make the screws more accessible
  • Reversible bottom plate in case you don't want Murphy visible
  • Move the logo to be less visible when assembled
  • Added a 2nd encoder spot in the top right corner

Thank you in advance for filling out the IC Form and we’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Yeehaw, getting closer and closer to justifying a proper de-soldering tool.
And no, I'm not really fond of the mill-max sockets.

Just to make sure I understand, does a through hole kit basically mean this is a solder it yourself project kit rather than a hot swappable board?

A through-hole kit typically means you solder the switches, the controller, and any diodes yourself.

You can assume this to be the case if you look at the included parts, you’ll see that the ProMicro (the controller) and diodes are listed.

That's exactly it, you'll be soldering all the components on yourself. It can be converted to hotswap using MillMax sockets.

I did the GB for the Mercutio, would have bought the bigdill if I could, and now, will definitely buy this.

You guys are doing great work, keeping it incredibly cheap, and making kits accessible to everyone in ways a lot of other creators don't.
Looking forward to this, and anything else you guys do in the future!

Can you help me understand why the prototypes look so different from the initial renders? Is that how they look like in the end, with the metal showing below the knob ? Even the knob itself is different.
Also the circuits on the oled are showing

Hi there, the renders aren't using 1:1 models of some of the components, mainly the OLED and encoder. The knob used in the renders is larger than the knobs we're shipping the kits with, but any knob that works with an EC11 encoder will work. As for the OLED cutout, we'll be shrinking it for the GB units to minimize the amount of circuit board visible.

Check out their last project, the "Mercutio 40%"- it also had an OLED and the fit was much tighter. They have actual pictures of it (not renders) on their webpage.

We're US based so you can purchase from our main site.

It seems that can't buy it in China from these two proxies.

You can buy directly from MechWild if this is the case. At the quantity discussed earlier, we would be upgrading your order to Priority Mail International instead of keeping it at First Class. If the shipping seems outrageous, let me know.

Are you selecting "Assembly?" You shouldn't select assembly. You're gonna have to build it yourself.

Quick update, the assembly slots have all been sold. They filled up a little faster than expected and we even went over the planned limit by a good amount. This isn't a particularly challenging build, but we will be streaming a couple of builds before the GB ends. It will also serve as a Q&A to answer any questions you might have. We will announce it in advance here and on the Discord server as well.

The site is a touch misleading/confusing with regards to the LEDs.

You're given an option to choose the type of leds with the kit but there's also LED's listed under "Add-ons" and not "Extras".
The "Extras" section indicates that parts listed are already included in the kit. The "Add-ons" section does not.

So it gives the impression that LEDs may or may not be included with the kit.

I assume they are because you select it from the dropdown with the kit, but it might be a good thing to clarify.

I grabbed two of them, One black and one white + an extra knob. This will be my first solder project and I'm very excited  ;D

On the group buy page for this on MechWild, there is an option to add Pro Micro Sockets and Pro Micro Socketing Pins to my order. What would these do for the Murphpad? Do I need it? Sorry, I'm pretty new to custom keyboards, and this would be my first time assembling anything like this. Thank you in advance!

You don't need those, unless you want to make the pro-micro hot swappable. You solder the socketing pins to the pro-micro and the sockets to the pcb. Then the pro-micro can be removed or socketed into the pcb just by applying pressure.

This link explains the process clearly https://docs.splitkb.com/hc/en-us/articles/360011263059-How-do-I-socket-a-microcontroller-

Meanwhile, this link explains the reasoning to do it

why not putting the screen on the bottom side so it is more visible instead of putting it  behind the knob?

that makes sense, but the knob could be in the way.. I have a bdn9 and the knob is really high, is there somewhere the height of this numpad when built?

edit: last thing, if I purchase a battery, is there some sort of reserved space and suggested battery size? or I'm on my own if I need to slot a battery?

Most nice!nano sellers carry the 301230 battery as it fits between the controller and the PCB.

Hello! Just want to ask if the OLED space on the top plate will be reduced in the final product?

Love that it's mirrorable, how likely are the 3DP cases?

Any chance there's a way to get one of these if you weren't part of the GB? Found out about it too late and these look KILLER :(

We'll have plenty of extras that'll be posted shortly after the MurphPad GB units ship.

Any expectation of roughly when extras may be available / what’s the best way to hear about them? I missed the GB, but I *NEED* this.

Just completed my kit last night, it's freaking awesome!

I'm curious, what was the intention with adding the 3 function buttons on the underside of the PCB?
