Title: Post Your Own Artwork
Post by: absyrd on Tue, 19 May 2015, 14:41:27
So... between my "Destiny" thread and the IC for Cherry screenprints (link in sig)... plus knowing HP, Binge, etc all do some great stuff that they send with their keycaps... I decided we should have a thread dedicated to people sharing their art.

I'm a sloppy sketcher and more abstract painter in general, but I dabble with everything. I'll start it off:

"Withstand" 24x24" on wood:

Hey absyrd
Y U SO ABSYRD

Good stuff here. Is "Withstand" done in oil/acrylic?

And I love line drawings so your second piece is awesome. Looks a bit digitized?

Here are some of my work:

Going to print these so if anyone's up for a poster head over to the IC thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=71971.0).

Acrylic.

Alot of my sketches I just photocopy then scan.

And I love both your illustrations. Is that infinity cow something you came up with? Is it an old proverb that you came up with a design for?

That car situation with all those kids... I'm having a panic attack just looking at it.

Both of these were done for a magazine called "Kult" here in Singapore. Every issue they have a topic and some funny/strange facts related to the topic, which they then get people to illustrate.

The cow one was - You can lead a cow up stairs but not down

The girls - You can fit 19 girls in a Smart car

It's good fun really. You can spot a #thuglyfe girl in the car cleaning her gun haha

Oils are fun and forgiving. I love how you can layer and layer and mix and blend without waiting on drying like most acrylic work (at least for me). So much more depth.

Why'd you only do half? Just as a test to see if you liked the result of just drawing better?

Goofy how? That'd make a great print with many different methods. I'd do a huge linocut of it and you could even layer semi-transparent inks and spin it to make some nutso patterns.

I try and try to do orderly **** like this, and I just obsess too much and it ends up sucking.

Well goofy, in terms of, it's an octopus with a top hat, mustache, and monocle.  I've made small linocuts before. It's a pain in the ass, to me at least.

Yea, I end up obsessing a lot when I try stuff like that. It can be really irritating, since you have an idea in your head, then it just doesn't work out.

I love the new synthetic lino material. It cuts much easier and lasts much longer. People say the prints don't come out as nice, but I'm not one for perfection.

Yep. It never works out for me. My ideas snowball. The best **** I do is at 4am, whacked out on sleeping pills but still can't sleep, and just not giving a crap.

I bought some thick watercolor paper to paint that on. To get some of the effects, I used a facial tissue to lift out paint in some areas.

Some of my art glass work.  I used to be a 3 dimensional design major with an emphasis in glass.  I have a ton of work that I either assisted on or traded for with other artists all over my house.  These ones are a few of my own that I have in my office and in the kitchen cupboard.  Most of my stuff was given as gifts or is now in the possession of my mom that built custom shelves in her kitchen/dining room to house it all.

My brother is a professional glass blower that has done apprenticeships all over the east coast and went to both Corning and Penland. I sort of know what I'm looking at.

How did you get the symmetry in that vase / pen holder? Mold or just hand spun/shaped to perfection? It is VERY nice.

I'm used to seeing stuff more like your tumblers.

Thanks for sharing!

All my stuff is done by hand.  The only mold used is actually for the tumblers (a piece of pipe) to get the diameter the same.  My ex boss was a student at Pilchuck and I have been lucky enough to assist on a demo with Dante and Paul Desomo at a Glass Art conference several years ago.

Wow, that looks absolutely stunning! How do you get the acrylic bits to look so solid?

Lay it flat, then I water the acrylic down a bit and lay it on VERY thick, do some of the movement with toothpicks or pencils to get desired effect, then put a box fan blowing across it at low setting. It goes from standing cms off the top of the canvas down to a nice, thick looking solid color after evap/drying. Did the same thing with my first post, "Withstand".

Took me forever to figure it all out with cheap paints, but so worth it now. I always hated the transparency I was almost forced into with acrylic. Hence, also why I love Montana spray paint; goes on thick, matte finish, amazing colors, and dries instantly.

Its a Valve texture file, so it's basically a texture/skin to be used in cs:go, or anything that uses source engine really.
Actually did this as one of my work sample for an application on studying game design...  ;)

Jack of all trades, eh?

That metal sculpture is really making me want to take a metalworking class at the community college near me. Not that I could do something like that, but it is so dope and inspiring.

Haha I'd say Jack at best, and master of none. I do enjoy dabbling in a little bit of everything though. And thanks very much, metal working is extremely satisfying in my opinion, but it is difficult to obtain all the tools necessary. I think taking a class at a local community college is a great idea, i wish I still had access to all those tools!

Digital will not help you at all with oil.  With oil you always have to work against the opacity and pigment behavior of your paints.

Just wanted to say, the artisans who create caps have been an inspiration and has allowed me to delve back into messing around with watercolors and pastels. Thank you guys for your work and sharing them with the community.

A quick pastel work I did the other weekend. I believe I limited myself to the size of the paper I had and thus it messed with some proportions. I really have some rust to shake off but for something off the top of my head, suddenly hearing eye of the tiger and realizing that the age gap between some of my first cousins and I is pretty large, a tiger cub seemed fitting and it was fun.

My favourite is the sloth at the end of the tunnel.

I like these. The one on the left with the head going down the tunnel is both intriguing and a bit unsettling for me. It conjures memories of Jinji Ito's short story, The Enigma of Amigara Fault and the film Being John Malkovich, two stories that have stuck with me for many years. The reason for this is that, as a kid, I would dream of trying to squeeze myself down into impossibly small openings. It took a lot of effort and when I woke I never knew exactly how I forced myself into those spaces.
Here is Jinji Ito's manga: http://imgur.com/gallery/ZNSaq (http://imgur.com/gallery/ZNSaq)

Wow, there are some really talented people here! I like to try and do some art as well but i have no focus so i just kinda dabble in things. I started out with film photography, photoshop duties changes and I started using it for drawing as well, then digital photography, and bits of acrylic paintings or pottery and sculpture through out the years.

I've been in the laser light show industry for 18 years so my eyes have become very sensitive to subtle changes in color and detail. Looking at flashy lasers in a darkened studio for so long can really do a number on a guy (O_o)

Did you go to Dave School? I have a friend who does 3D compositing for film who went there.
