does this count towards my post count?
+1
;D
yeah it's getting pretty out of handLike why does Topre feel like Topre? :D
I can even see threads (regarding topics that have already been well discussed, etc) that I can only assume are made by users so they can get easy replies and then reply back for ez post boosts
I might just be paranoid though

The logic behind this seems to be fine; however I think a minimum set of guidelines could be needed. For example, would the post of gif images be considered as spam? or it would be a minimum word count per post to not be considered spam? I am pretty sure that in good faith most people want to contribute with their posts, even if it is just expressing support for a previous posted statement, therefore a little bit more detail on what would be considered spam should be described, for the community to try to stick with it.This is targeted at the people who are trying to post 50 posts in a matter of hours to get into the bro caps sale.

Why do MX not feel like Topre?
But yea, the spamming was getting a bit out of hand.
We can only hope they see this.

topre is its own animal, and i recommend it more so to new users coming over from rubber domes. the Jump to MX may be a bit overwhelming, i mean there are ALOT of complex parts on those switches. The sheer learning curve of those mechanical switches can frustrate the laymen back to using there ipod for typing habits. While topre has that familiar rubber dome comfort with some snap. Not to mention that weird conical spring which most new users confuse with having to deal with resistance in the switch. Unfortunately the topre price point is counter active to my suggestion for an easier transition. did i answer your question? **** it just buy something shiny on massdrop

Even then, any of us spam from time to time, if newcomers will be sanctioned for that, why the rest of us would not? Should the rules be different?

there's a difference between providing ****-level color commentary (which is my kind of spam) and the absolute bull**** that is happening on the board lately. if you don't believe me, please see THIS VERY THREAD by a moderator addressing the issue.

This is the best way I've heard it put. More than once this past week or so, I've thought about the "eternal September" analogy related to what's been going on here at GH.

Basically, this is what has been happening here post-R00TW0RM*. R00TW0RM can be considered Geekhack's September 1993, and there exist both pre-R00TW0RM and post-R00TW0RM members of the forum.
* I use R00TW0RM as the metric, because it is a turning point in the life of the forum. The actual events which precipitated the influx of new users to Geekhack were twofold:
- _______'s mental breakdown (as evidenced by the degeneration of his post content, which was later remover per his request) and subsequent permaban from the forum, followed by his ban from Deskthority and move to reddit, where he aroused the curiosity of many reddit users who were unfamiliar with Geekhack, and who wondered why he harbored such an obsession with our forum
- The rebuilding and restructuring of the forum, with a bias toward increased membership numbers.

^ Member since May 2012, 46 posts, careful man, slow down with the spamming!
So like half of every post your something thread is just filled with "respectable" members posting something like wow love your X, those are utter crap post personally most of the "post your X" threads should not give or count towards post count (pretty much the entire media subforum) that's just me though as I find people saying things like that's my dream key/board to be the most annoying thing in the world

Go ahead and add every "X Therapy" thread. We should just move all these into Off Topic and call it a day.

Go one better...remove post count entirely. It really doesn't matter. Instead of "need x number of posts to do y" make it "member for x months to do y" Most of the idiots have no patience..they want it now.

Right, spamming is the symptom, the cause is the post count requirement. What's that expression?

Yeah, well, this is what happens when you encourage people to host their profit ventures on your community platform.
I have no ill-will towards Bro Caps but linking a business venture to forum activity all but guarantees the signal-to-noise ratio goes way out of wack.

Is this something you stand behind though? Ultimately, you can't dictate that bro have a post limit but have you discussed the ramifications of this with him? I am glad that GH exists thoughm /r/mk can get a little slow.

I think someone actually froze the post counts. I've been watching one member post in several topics, and he hasn't moved off of 49.

I'm sorry, but geekhack is a keyboard forum, not a marketplace, and is run by volunteers. We need to do what we can to keep the quality posts to a maximum and the spam posts to a minimum. I hate to sound like a prick, but I value the mod team's sanity over someone being able to buy a keycap.
Seems like Other Geeky Stuff is becoming the new target for post count farmers.
Seems like Other Geeky Stuff is becoming the new target for post count farmers.
There should definitely be a better alternative to this, a post count minimum just causes too much spam. If it was only by how long you've been registered on the forums then could result in a lot of accounts being created without any activity. If there had to be requirements then I feel that a mix of both would be best for the forums, perhaps 50 posts and 1 or 2 months on the forum. Who knows, but there definitely needs to be a better option.

Oh, don't get me wrong I posted that quote because it was hilarious and amazingly tone deaf.
I think it should be #2 in the new Hall of Shame thread...
You can't force people to use something like a forum and expect quality posts. That is silly logic. While I enjoy both Reddit and GH, all this has done is bring the bad parts of Reddit over to GH in force. Someone should want to participate on their own simply to be a part of the community, not because they want some little keycap. People that simply want to participate just because, are going to be the ones that contribute quality posts to the community. I also feel like there is value in lurking. In many cases, starting off lurking is really where you spend the time reading up on everything and really learning tons. Forcing people to start posting after knowing mechanical keyboards existed for only a week just doesn't seem like a great idea. There are also people that just don't enjoy the social aspect of forums, and I don't really like the idea of forcing them to be like "everyone else" either.Or if you want to establish a minimum post count you should also have a maximum posts per day ratio.
If coordinated with the mods, perhaps a forum could be made where a post count/time limit was needed to post, and thus being able to post on that forum would be needed for sales. In the current state, the mods just got thrown under a bus it seems.
Just to be able to have a chance at a keycap? Sound ideas for sure, though seems like overkill and hard to enforce. At that rate just flat out say "friends only."You can't force people to use something like a forum and expect quality posts. That is silly logic. So, you can post as much as you want, but until your 50+ posts level out to less than 3 per day you can't buy caps.
I know my posts per day is like 7 (every one solid gold) but I've been here longer, so maybe make the ratio a function of their membership length. Minimum 50 posts, and maximum X posts per day times the number of months you've been a member.
But how does one really conclude whether or not someone is spamming? in an active discussion it would not be uncommon to reach 4-5+ post an hour....

The problem here is that there are too many extrinsic sources of motivation for posting. (i.e. classifieds, stars, artisans)
Ideally people should be intrinsically motivated by the simple desire to contribute; Post for the sake of the post and nothing else.
It also doesn't help the conflict that there is a stigma tied to "meaningless" posts. I think that such tomfoolery has its place here as long as people keep it within reason.
I myself have made many **** posts but I don't think anyone has called me out on it since a vast portion of what I post has real content.
If you ask me, I don't think post count should be displayed the way it is. Post count should not be a badge that we wear to feel that we are entitled or above others, rather, a mere statistic hidden from plain view.

Hey thanks for calling me out as one of those evil spammers.
As a person that's been over at Reddit and coming over here I feel that I blundered into a bar brawl. Yeah I posted that - in jest and unaware of the reasons and stories behind this Charlie foxtrot. I've come over to learn about my new hobby and be better informed. Mostly what I've learned is to question if GH wants new members.
But how does one really conclude whether or not someone is spamming? in an active discussion it would not be uncommon to reach 4-5+ post an hour....

Didn't mention any names. Hell, didn't even know that was you, simply just quoted what I saw.
If thats not spam, I don't know what is. But its really not a big deal. Seems like you have since realized it was spam and now contributing to the community. :thumb:
I think someone actually froze the post counts. I've been watching one member post in several topics, and he hasn't moved off of 49.
Edit: Never mind, I just went up by one.
Hmm
Hmm??? Were they actually frozen?
Huh
Gonna be a few sad pandas like this poor fella:QuoteDoes GH have a post limit per day? I was trying to participate in the sale and not ****post but its not counting them any more. I would really like a lycan.
Well for the actual forum-instilled limits, it's both post count and membership time.
What about the tom cruise gifs?!

There are also people that just don't enjoy the social aspect of forums, and I don't really like the idea of forcing them to be like "everyone else" either.
If coordinated with the mods, perhaps a forum could be made where a post count/time limit was needed to post, and thus being able to post on that forum would be needed for sales. In the current state, the mods just got thrown under a bus it seems.

you are acting as if this is the effect we tried for
firstly, adding a post count is nothing new, clack factory has required both a post count and minimum amount of time registered on the site before for most sales
gh itself requires a minimum post count for access to certain parts of the forum
right now, we have a huge amount of demand for the product we offer, the rule was put in place to protect the community not destroy it
whilst we cant meet demand, we want to do everything in our power to ensure people within the community have the best possible chance
now, i understand post count is a bit of a ham fisted way to do this, and we certainly dont want to encourage spam, im sure there are plenty of people that invest huge time and money in this community that dont actively post, and it is certainly not our intention to not include people like that, this is a temporary measure taken until we can have a better system in place
rest assured, i am screening accounts, and people just spamming to hit 50 will be seen
we have a much better system planned for the next sale
for now, stop spamming, i will be speaking with hoff about this, and anyone who he himself deems to have been negatively affecting the forum as a direct result of this i will look in to, and take action on a case by case basis
and for everyone making such a fuss about this post count thing, get over it, this is a hobby, and its meant to be fun, from time to time we will have to make decisions that you may not like, but we are looking at the bigger picture, and whilst you may not agree with some of the things we do, we will always be doing it for a reason
nothing last forever, we are keyboard enthusiasts, this is all trial and error

i know you probably dont mean this but the way you worded your post equivocates fans of your/bro caps' products to the entire community. that is, at least for me, one of the biggest reasons this 'brotember' has been so obnoxious -- we are seeing a massive influx of your potential customers, who are not necessarily congruent with geekhack community members, new or old.
thanks for taking the time to comment. without knowing more of the details, i still think you guys are pretty good at whipping up hype for collectable boy toys (sorry if that's a pointed statement, but duhhhh) but the way that affects geekhack, to me, the bad outweighs the good by a huge margin.
you basically have free advertising in a community (regardless of how much money you spend on community endeavors, they are still limited to the particular subset of participants) and i think there should be more care exercised in what that advertising entails and the effect it has. but the fact that you have popped in to discuss this at all shows you are thinking about it and i appreciate that.
i dont think everyone in the community likes what we do, but i think we do what we do for the members of the community that do like us
i cant be held accountable for the actions of a few idiots, who think that they can spam 50 posts and get a bro cap
as for this thread, and the whole issue, i havent been on gh all month, this is all the first im hearing about it, and my first thoughts and comments about it also
PSA: No one who is spamming reads this section of the forum way at the bottom of the pile.

just mentioning in plain terms what i see as a problem, and i guess some appreciation that you're willing to address it, and additionally i am aware that you and BC arent the same person nor do you like, work in perfect concert to do what you do, so rest assured that what i'm saying is not entirely directed at you.

MoreThis, plus the fact that this whole hobby is basically about acquiring something and then acquiring more somethings to fix it/pimp it/upgrade it. So separating the community from those who provide said services is easier said than done. And possibly counterproductive. I am very sorry to know that bro, it was suppose to be a compliment.
Being myself a relatively new member of GH I felt more engaged with the community when I have the opportunity to talk to well know individuals, but again, sorry.

There are a few accounts I swear more than one person uses. (Unless people are bipolar and/or multiple personalities, which if so is totally fine.)
While I'm thinking of it, is it against TOS to have multiple people using a singular account?

What? are you kidding? I am the same old old fart as always, not bipolar, with a lovely daughter and a caring and supporting wife, happily living in this side of the Bravo.

It's really not something that could be tracked, and I don't see a huge issue with it. If someone wants to share their account, they accept liability for the actions.

Try to get all of the "new posts" to be just one user. demik is on a posting rampage again lol.
Another question: when this timeout is over and posts count again, are we suddenly going to get credit for all the posts in countable areas that we've made during the timeout?
Or does it really only count posts actually posted when not in timeout?
Just forget about the post count brothers. Imagine you are at DT where post count does not count, at all. :p
If you want to check it, go to Profile>Show Post and check the last page, there you will have your total post, nobody cares about it, nobody can see it, but you.

Everybody can see that as well, I just tried and saw you're at 5098. Either way I don't mind the post count being stopped, it doesn't stop me from posting.

I share the same feeling, I will be posting, no matter what, and trying each time to add something to the conversation, at least a smile some times. The only case I avoid to post is when what I can say may not add anything to the conversation.

I try my best to continue the conversation or add some benefits as well. Even asking questions can be beneficial for some threads like ICs and GBs as long as the same question wasn't already asked. I won't lie though, when I first started posting here I didn't really know what to post and would leave the occasional "interested" and such. The longer you stay on Geekhack the more you start to appreciate it, the more you want to contribute, the better your posts become.

I'm honestly wondering this my self. I've been trying to immerse my self here without spamming useless crap. Yes I do want to reach the 50/100 post cap to get to partake in Bro's sales, but i'm not spamming my way there.

Looks like the answer is a no, with posts counting now I haven't seen anybody's jump a significant amount. At least it helped filter a lot of nonsense in the forums. :thumb:

There's no way to make them jump like that, so it will just effectively be a "dead zone" of posting that didn't count.

What a crazy forum management issue.
Most forum software have a minimum word count that can be set for a post to even be submitted. I just set that high enough so that a real thought has to be written out for a post to even be submitted. Never really had an issue with the post count bloaters even when I did giveaways that were based on post count.

I think it more has to do with people not really caring about the community and just wanting the caps. It looks like their theory is to just spend a day on geekhack, build up enough posts, and only care about the bros. Some people it seems like have ended up staying because they enjoy it here so at least we got a few new members that will be staying. :thumb:
I'm new here, but reading the thread I get the feeling that everyone really wants to keep some parts of geekhack (almost) exclusive. Spamming in a PSA thread about spamming pretty much says "we don't care about you noobies, get off my lawn!". Just my 2 cents, as someone who is a newcomer.
How about just a portion of the keys made to be sold to outsiders, like maybe 10 out of a hundred or something. "Get your scraps here kids!" Probably a bad idea, but the current one isn't really that great.

It's not that everyone wants to keep some parts of Geekhack exclusive. Bro Caps deciding he only wants to sell his artisan caps to Geekhack members, and only those with a certain number of posts, doesn't exactly reflect the attitude of "everyone" toward newcomers.
Also, new members spamming threads with useless posts to reach a goal of a certain number of posts doesn't exactly give others a good impression of them. It marks them as a "spammer." I believe Bro Caps' intent was to get more enthusiasts to come to Geekhack, and for them to engage in conversation here.

Just to be clear I'm not questioning BroCaps' motivation, the intention was good but the execution could have been better is what I'm saying. I don't pretend to know how it should have been done, and I don't really want to think about it since I'm not the one who has a say in it.

I too am new(er) here, I lurked for a long while before actually joining and conversing. The "get off my lawn" mentality isn't really a specific thing here, but that of any forum/board from the beginning of ever. Other boards i've been a part of have those members who joke about those who are newer and/or not knowing of inside jokes. It happens, don't let it bother you. See through it and most members will except you at some point and time.
As far as Bro goes, yes I think that was his point, but it didn't come across as that to quite a few people. Oh well, live and learn and continue on.

The thing with spam is if it's all in one thread spy (the list of recently posted in threads) still has room for lots of other threads that are not full of spam - there is often one thread here where spamming is being overlooked. Spamming this thread had the benefit that it kept it in spy so there was actually a chance of someone reading it but hidden down at the bottom of the forum few would otherwise!
In an ideal world everyone would play nice and we wouldn't need to filter who can enter a sale but we live in a world where some people buy caps just so they can sell them on straight away for a big profit - they are taking advantage of genuine newbies who have not been lucky in a sale yet (like yourself? Not sure how your luck is...) and this is not good for the community and is surely part of what Bro was attempting to stop. You've only been here a couple of months and have over 200 posts so you know 50 was not a big ask, though starting a GB is kinda cheating :P
There were plenty of newbies during this period who appear genuinely interested rather than just joining to get to 50 and enter the sale and they are very welcome, just as you are. If you think we're trying to keep all the caps for longtime-member selves look in therapy for many posts congratulating those who won their first sale - it's just not true :)
Sad state of the world isn't it? Which happiness lasts longer--plastic or friendship? What a crazy forum management issue.

Is it the plastic, instead of the friendship? That sucks.
It only took life a week of quality posting for me several posts. Ripster is the reason I ever found this forum. :))
does this count towards my post count?

Which I feel like we should thank him
jokes aside...
He gives us great advertising and actually gives us some quality members.
People who get sick of his child like antics over at /mk and want to participate in more then just shoes and pokers usually come over here.

I came here from reddit for Bro sales, mostly. I like both forums though. There are some real good shoe pictures on reddit!
It's also interesting to see how much Clacks sell for, and Ripster posts up recently-closed eBay sales. I wish he would make an Excel sheet or something for it.

Didn't mean for that to sound like I was upset. But honestly when I saw that thread title pop up in unread I shuddered a bit. But it was just an annoying phase, thankfully. Is this PSA still relephant now that we may be getting that Spam star? :)) :))

Ooh, sorry. Didn't know I'd rustle jimmies. I swear that it was not my intention. :-[
Also, it didn't give me the necro warning so I thought it was fair play (last post right before Xmas). :'(
Sorry, njbair. :(

Was this the phase where people had to have a minimum score count for sales?

I bet you had a lot of people posting in Off Topic because that's the easiest section to post in, only to realize it didn't count. XDIs this PSA still relephant now that we may be getting that Spam star? :)) :))

Well, it's not irrelephant.
And yeah, I'm thinking it was brought about because of the Monster Mash sale when newbies would come in and spam post just to get that count up. Half of them were entertaining, but the other half did get pretty annoying--really fast.
It was everywhere. Completely meaningless posts in every thread. There were times you could pull up Spy and watch a single user spam ten threads in a row.I bet you had a lot of people posting in Off Topic because that's the easiest section to post in, only to realize it didn't count. It got so bad that the mods disabled post counting on every subforum to eliminate the incentive to spam.Well thank you for the history lesson! Nah, that's fine. It's when 50 people are doing it and all they're posting is like, "wow, cool" or "nice," that kind of thing. It was everywhere. Completely meaningless posts in every thread. There were times you could pull up Spy and watch a single user spam ten threads in a row.
This is what I sort of do - I go to unread topics, open in a new tab for everything I want to read, mark the rest as read then read/post. Feel like a **** now. :blank:

Can someone up-ban me or mute me from Bro Caps board? I would like to post some pictures of my Bro Cap and not really sure why I was banned. It's been a long time since I've posted, so if I did something wrong please let me know and hopefully time served is good? The threads there are currently locked for everyone.
