Recommendations for a Budget Tactile Switch
« on: Fri, 02 December 2022, 04:29:00 »
Hey guys, just looking for some advice building my first custom keyboard. Looking to get a tactile switch, but I've never had a keyboard with tactile switches before, so I'm not entirely sure what I prefer in terms of actuation height / weight, bump, etc. I'm looking for something a bit more budget friendly, with the Akko CS Lavender Purples jumping out so far as I've seen many recommend it. The WS Heavy Tactiles also look really great, but I can't find them for a decent price in Australia, the price is either heavily inflated or shipping costs are really high. I'm also don't need them to be available right now, my board doesn't arrive for another 3-4 months so if there are any cool GBs or releases of interest coming soon I'd be happy to look into them.

The Akko Lavender Purple are a fantastic choice, the bump is snappy and very noticable but not heavy at all.

There's also the Tecsee Purple Pandas, smaller bump, with a 68g spring, but a still a great tactile switch.

Thanks for the suggestion there, they look quite nice too.

Also came across the Epomaker Budgerigar which is a little more expensive, anyone have experience with them?

Not really sure what I'm looking for regardless so may just have to bite the bullet on one of them and see how it goes.

I'd add tacsee ice milky tactiles and sapphires to the budget list. While, I agree that the akko lavenders feel pretty good they don't sound that nice and the build is noticeably cheap. Totally usable but I think it's worth mentioning. The purple pandas are barely tactile IMO and they feel closer to browns than what I would call tactile. The ice milky switches have been really surprising to me and I ended up loving them a lot after just trying out a few of them.

You got it right the first time. Lavender Purples are popular among entry-level. They are medium-bump, medium-intensity. If you don't like them, at least you'll know where to go from there.

The budget tactile scene is getting real good.

On the low, low end, you can find OUTEMU Orange wholesale on AliExpress. Like 14 USD shipped for 70. They are just slightly-heavier Browns, I think. If you lube the springs, they can allegedly become decent. There's a review in the Reviews section.

Slightly more expensive, but still cheap, are AKKO POM Browns. These are MX Browns, but made of smoother material. So they lack many of MX Browns' problems. You can buy them 45 at a time, if you aren't sure about committing to them.

KTT Mallo is available somewhere for $2.40/10. They are the most linear tactiles, a smoother softer MX Brown. They need spring lube and some lube around the leaf-area to avoid annoying sounds. But otherwise feel okay from factory.*

JWICK T1s are the budget king. They are a medium-heavy tactile, kind of a giant top-mounted MX Brown. During sales [probably upcoming 12.12 on AliExpress] you can get them 25 USD shipped for 90. Unbeatable at that price. Definitely worth trying.

Chosfox&Jwick Voyager is an affordable Holy Boba switch. Nice big rounded D-shaped bump, sort of. No way you can make these cheaper yourself.

Feker Pandas come in various colours, they are cheap Holy Pandas. Good enough, if you lube them.

SP Star Meteor Orange is a mid-priced light-tactile, they get a bit cheaper during sales. Try a sample pack along with SP Star (Polaris?) Purple, if you can. During sales.

Most of this stuff is available from AliExpress. Shipping cost to Australia will vary from my own experience. Only the KTT Mallo will be out-of-reach for you.

Ajazz Diced fruit switches are fun and cheap. Try Huano Banana. Or the Kiwi one.

If you can find them, AULA/LEOBOG Browns and "Matcha Axis" can be very cheap and decent.

Durock Light Tactile and Medium Tactile will be more affordable during sales. Try out a pack. If you are really lucky, you can come across the "Cotton Candy" variant [not labelled as such] for an affordable price. They are nylon housings, which is good.

OUTEMU and SP Star tactiles can be found in "tester" units or packs of 4, which makes trying them cheap and easy. The same is true for TTC and Kailh switches and some other brands, so you may want to try those as well.

Thanks for the wide array of suggestions there, nice to see that shipping to Australia isn't a huge problem for the most part thanks to Aliexpress.

Do you think trying some of the sample packs are worth it to get a feel of what I prefer rather than just jumping in the deep end? I had seen some of those but wasn't immediately going to jump on it but the more options I see people pointing out the more I think it might be worth it.

It's definitely, definitely worth trying the sample packs.

It's so much cheaper in the long run to buy a few cheap switches, rather than hundreds of $$$ building something you don't like.

The 12.12 sale is coming up. Some of these items will be discounted. [BTW, yesterday I found KTT Mallo on AliExpress, meaning that everything I listed is available there.]

There are sporadic sales. Silent tactiles were on sale Dec 1-4, and they'll be back 12.12. Today, JWICK T1 are on sale:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004226805283.html

I don't know what prices are like to Aus, but it's 14 CAD for a 10-pack sample or 30 CAD for 90. T1s are definitely a contender for budget tactile.

Here are some flash sales:

Gaterons:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003803920093.html

OUTEMU [Brown and regular purple]:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003770333961.html

Plus, here are samples:

TTC Golden Brown V3 [8-pack]

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002002311062.html

TTC Bluish White for about $5

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002006725386.html

Make sure to "Follow" the individual storefronts, as you will sometimes get follower discounts during sales. Check their homepage.

Bunch of sample packs!

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002427848379.html

Other 4-10 packs of switches listed earlier in the thread may be discounted during the 12.12 sale, so you can wait till then for non-discounted sample packs.

OUTEMU Orange can be found at a regular wholesale price [like $14 for 50] here:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003896944573.html

Also, Feker Pandas are discounted until the 9th:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004388563696.html

I would go for a 10-pack of the 62 G.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention a few things.

1. There is a typo in the above post. The JWICK T1 samples go 30 switches for about $14 CAD here, not 10 switches.

2. Kailh switch sample tester pack (very good idea):

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32898546644.html

3. 10 Huano Banana for $10 CAD [the 45-switch fruit jars are more fun, tho]:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004494240672

4. Gateron CAP Milky Brown! $14.50 for 35-pack. Order 3 packs [105 switches], get a $4 CAD discount.

The CAP Browns are an excellent budget tactile:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003605446064.html

5. This is the more fun way to order Ajazz Banana and Kiwi [on sale]:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003340975687.html

6. U4T samples $15 for 10 [this is not a budget tactile]:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004718912532.html

7. You can send a message to the INEDA Digital Store, requesting a sample pack of OUTEMU switches selected by you. If you are nice to them, you can get 1-switch of say about 6 different types, just for the cost of those individual switches.

Wow! Thanks for all the help there! I'll definitely look at some of the samples, the Kalih switch tester kit seems like a bit of a steal as it'll let me try a bunch of diferent options and see how they feel so I can get an idea of what I like. Having to wait a month for it to ship might kill me but I know it will be worth it in the long run haha.

I have a new user bonus for the Kalih set you sent through for 45% off and free shipping. Do you think it would be worth just taking that or waiting until 12.12?

For the Kailh set, it would be worth it to use the new-user bonus.

You'll get the chance to use other bonuses / deals / coupons on 12.12.

The 12.12 sale will last for several days. You might get coupons simply for browsing AliExpress randomly. Especially if you use the mobile app on your phone. You can also use the mobile app to play "coin games" that give you coins, which will give you a 1-4% discount on some items. [Best to start now. The plant-growing game works best].

Always check the "get coupons" button beside the item that you are browsing. Also, check the home page of the retailers, after you "Follow" them. They sometimes give special discounts during sales. In addition, there are little notes near items about how for every $40 you spend or whatever, you get a $4 discount. This can make some items especially enticing. Best to put things in your cart, and buy them one retailer at a time, in case any discounts stack.

If you are new to AliExpress, some tips are:
-Browse other sellers for lower rates on the same items. Shipping is a big factor.
-Don't buy from any seller with less than 80% rating, ideally they are 86% or higher.
-You can politely communicate with some sellers, such as INEDA Digital Store and sometimes KPRepublic, if you have special requirements / combos in mind.
-Don't be afraid to ask questions before buying

-Be absolutely sure what you are buying: did you select the correct options and quantity? You'll see the real invoice when you decide to "purchase now" or purchasing from your cart.

Anyway, buying that Kailh switch tester might be good practice for 12.12. Knowledge of using and applying a coupon with a purchase will be helpful later.

Awesome, thanks for the tips. Aliexpress is a bit of an intimidating marketplace but everything you mentioned is really handy to know!

Kailh can be hit or miss.
Nice switch but the springs are junk (lots of ping, just like Cherry) and sometimes the lube is inconsistent, not just between switch types but even between batches.

If you already plan to lube and want to change springs you can get a great "budget" switch but if you have to include those in the price to fix problems they're not really all that budget. My purple pros had TONS of bind and they were the first switch I noticed ping without even listening for it. While mine would cause pain in my fingers after a half hour other people had no issue and when I was using Jades I had no issue either.

I had heard that Kailh switches are a bit hit or miss. Mostly giving it a go just so I can try to get a feel of my preferences (style of tactile bump, actuation force, etc). Hoping that it will give me a little more indication of where to go next.

Yes, Kailh switches are hit-or-miss, but it will help you determine what the 'hits' are.

Although their tactiles have issues [scratchy, or noisy springs, or turn clicky], some of their linears are nice, and their clicky switches are some of the best out there.

It will be good to know if any of those switches are compelling.

Let me know if you need any help with AliExpress. The 12.12 sale won't be as big as the 11.11, most likely, so there will be fewer-to-no coupons on offer. But likely some coin-based discounts, small or larger price reductions, and discounts for spending more money in a single order.

Now is a good time to write down the prices of items you want, to see if there are any real "deals" on 12.12.

Kailh Box Royal maybe a choise. They are like MX Browns but with a touch of a linear switch. Buy a few more than you need, some have quality issues.

Hey,

There seems to have not been a 12.12 sale this year around, at least for Canada. So maybe you didn't pick up any switches then.

But I did notice a sale going on right now: Definitely pick up the OUTEMU Silent Cream Yellow if you can:

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804483625584.html

(It's like $25 USD for 90 from this seller.)

OUTEMU Silent Lime [a less-tactile Cream Yellow] is similar in price, and the Silent Peach linear is excellent, as well:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003891937604.html

T1 on sale again, about $30 USD for 90.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004226805283.html

Sadly, there are no discounts I can find for AKKO switches today, such as Jelly Blue or POM Brown [both are worth trying].

There appears to be, as well, discounts on switch sample packs:

Funnily enough, I received one sample of WS Brown the other week.

It reminds me of BOX Brown, but is smoother and crisper. It's a sharper, more well-defined bump at the top. Not much like MX Brown.

BTW there is finally some sort of clearly-defined winter sale at AliExpress. Starts in an hour. Like, the 45-packs of POM Browns are on sale:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004780425097.html

[Of course, in the U.S. and maybe Australia it could be just as cheap(er) to order directly from the AKKO website.]
