The "my numpad is bigger than my keyboard" strug

(Attachment Link)

Actually if you turn one of then 90% how do they compare?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

In terms of surface area, it's close!

The numpad still does look bigger though :))

JD40 by CarpeKeyboards. Wooden spacer by HPE1000. Hack'd by Geeks sculpted SA keycaps by [CTRL]ALT. Switches are Krytox-lubed vintage blacks, with gold 65g springs by sprit, and pink switch stickers by TechKeys.

Show Image

JD, would you be mad if...someone...stole this idea and built my--I mean their--JD40 with a similar wooden spacer?

Not at all. I think it's a nice touch, and I would encourage it!

It would be awesome if someone started selling wood or plastic spacers!  :D

Hmmmmmmm  ;)

JD gets his choice first, then the rest are going in the classifieds  :thumb:

Left to right:  Padouk, Mahongany, Teak, Oak.  All of them are smaller than my prototype.  Also, these are just rough cut.  They still need the cutout for the usb and a lot of sanding and finishing.

Already did three times this past four weeks but didn't get a respond yet. I supposed the JD40 GB thread would be the right forum to discuss my issue only to realize it was deleted or something.  :( Do you know where I could get a plate for the JD40?

Stanced the MA42 last week and I've been messing with the angle a bit. I'm shocked how much better cherry profile feels on an angled board than on a flat board.

Just sharing my JD40 with stock qfr keycaps, only spare set I have. :D

It took quite a long time to build (sanding the plate to mirror finish, filing some misaligned cutouts and tuning of stabilizers) but it was well worth it. Currently working on wood inserts.

Thank you! I made that wrist rest, and I am quite proud of it. I found that with a 40% board, it is most comfortable to use a rest that is just about sized for a 60%, which this one is.

Shameless Plug Ahead:

I'm raffling both the wrist rest and the Astral V2 in this picture off right now...should you or anyone else be interested just check the link in my sig.

Not shameless at all. In fact I already donated to Destiny, but for a different raffle! For those that haven't yet, its a great idea to check out inanis' link - get Destiny's family more $$.

Have a little bit of time at work. Tried to fit Round 5 into JD40. The pearly white keys are beautiful on this micro keyboard but unfortunately some keys can't fit. Any suggestion?

Not the board I bought them for but wanted to see what they looked like on it.
Did you buy specific kit for the JD40? That's nice!

Love how this board looks.

If GON ever did a split space 40-45% with a 10u home row I'd instantly buy it.

i guess it depends alot on what one would use it for, but in my opinion the only thing i would "really" want to change is the left shift to a 1.25+1u setup instead :)
but then i mostly just use the mobik for irc or messaging.

I just need the 10u for dvorak and split space because a full size cap wastes so much space on a 40% imo. Also just realized that the Mobik has a different layout than the JD40.

ah, yeah, as Gon told me the mobik was designed to use pretty much all standard caps, making it a bit nisched to people like me who only uses it for simpler tasks :)

Makes sense, I try to use mostly standard caps on my boards but with weird 40% - 50% layouts it can be hard.

These are all so beautiful. What's the best way to get a 40% keyboard without paying 250 dollars these days?

Buy a used JD40, wait for the JD45, buy a Planck, or build your own. The cheapest way would probably be to get a case cut and hand wire it.

Probably not $250 though and the prototypes may be cheaper but I'm not sure how many were made.

Shameless plug for the blue Alps + carbon fiber case JD45 I'll be selling shortly.

I don't think any iterations of the JD40 have cost $250, have they?  @.@
