So, post whatever silly or embarrassing things you do that relate to your keyboard hobby, be it going without good food for a month to support your buys, or seriously using chopsticks to eat snacks near your keyboard, to whatever somewhat or REALLY embarrassing things you'd wish to share. :P
Firstly, I have a pink pair of tweezers I bought from Sephora when I was, like... 17 that I use for tons of things. From plucking my otherwise unruly eyebrows to soldering. Yeah, good thing I don't use lead-based solder.
They can frequently be seen in any builds I decide to document:

I stopped using it as my daily driver because of the nature of my work (Visual Studio based programming), but it's now my favourite board. I find myself taking it out of my drawer just to press the keys. The thing is though, I don't know if I truly love it, or I've somehow managed to deeply brainwash myself into liking it over time...

Haha, I dunno what to think about your situation either! You say that you disliked the feel of the switches when you first took it home, but then you say it became a favorite. It does sound like you kind of conditioned yourself to enjoy topre or maybe just learned to appreciate the feel after not being used to it initially. I felt that way when I tried my first mechanical. It being linear, I had no idea what to think as it was unlike any keyboard I had ever typed on.
Linears are now one of my absolute favorite types of switches to use.

as for a confession... i did a really awful soldering job on a teensy once and almost destroyed it with a radioshack soldering iron? and i broke the leads of two switches when taking apart my aek ii. probably the most embarrassing thing was buying keycaps from massdrop and my wasd v2 at the same time without realizing how long it takes massdrop to ship items. it was the first cherry board i bought, so i had a keyboard sitting in the closet for a month because i didn't have caps. i tried using it without caps. it wasn't fun

After paying $100 for a blue alps board on reddit (probably shot my offer way too high to the guy too!), my first alps board ever, I killed it by poking around in the circuitry when it was plugged in, somehow frying the controller. Changed capcitors, but nothing worked. I felt pretty stupid.
But do the switches still work? I mean if it's not standard BAE and 1u backspace, save that to make another alps board... I'd love to have a blue alps board of any kind :mad:

I bought the worldspawn atreus prototype, built it with in switch diodes and jailhouse blues, put it all together and never programmed it because it didn't like the staggered column layout.Don't feel bad. I can't use non-staggered or column staggered designs, either. There is a reason keyboards largely haven't changed in many decades.

Yessir! I ended up using it for my Infinity build, but ended up swapping them out yet again when I ruined the paint job on that one (another embarrassing/frustrating confession) and ended up trading them for some very mint SKCL green alps that were from a NIB keyboard (thanks to Ludovician). I traded the rest for some SKCL brown alps and a set of grey doubleshot keycaps from sth.
I donated 12 to the guy who helped me replace the NTC 6151N I fried with the FAME I currently have. He only asked for one so that he could replace a missing switch for another board, but I felt generous.
In the end, I only have 26 blue alps left (aside from the intact FAME) and not enough for any build other than a number pad haha.

That's cool. You should get an MX or Alps keyboard so you can put your soldering skills to work. You can change out switches at your leisure. You can't do that with a Topre keyboard.

I also feel a bit guilty by prefering brand new Gateron Blue and Black to their genuine Cherry MX counterparts (the new ones, vintage is a different story).
Stepping aside from Cherries, I do prefer Matias to any Alps I've tried. Could be because I never stepped on a brand new or exceptionally good condition Alps, but yeah, I do like Matias more.
I also prefer the sound of Model M to Model F. I do like F's lighter springs but can't stand the ringing (which I do quite like in Model M).

My wife owns Filco Metallic Blue 104 with MX Blues that I gave her couple years ago. She recently bought herself a CM Storm Quickfire XT with MX Browns for the office because her colleagues were complaining about the MX Blues being too noisy. She doesn't like the IBMs for some reason, totally prefers MX Blues above all :)
Still she thinks I'm crazy having half of basement full of vintage keyboards, plenty of keyboards in my office room which I regularly rotate, and a mini custom keyboard factory which I run as a hobby in my workshop :D

And having a ton of shoes ARE useful (more so than a ton of keyboards you don't use), and people who aren't sartorially inclined don't really understand how they fit together with different outfits. Not to mention guys have a ton more leeway for what is appropriate wear for any given situation. Its really just not a great comparison, along with being a gross overgeneralization.

Guys can be just as bad as shoes too, I use to own 30+ pairs of Jordan Retros until I realized how much money I had caught up in it and decided to sell them all. From my experience and the people I've been exposed to, I don't really see many women with hobbies other than shopping and amassing a collection of apparel.

I cannot move from one room to another in my house without shifting at least one box of keyboards xD . Most of them are the same models though, I have a while box full of AT102Ws for instance, a box of G80-3000s and several boxes of G81-8000s. So I can't even make a lot of reviews out of them because they're all the same xD .I have so many keyboards I don't know what to do with them all xD .You just need to start collecting the vintage computers that the keyboards came with--problem solved!

I just noticed in the last two weeks that I have 3 rubberdome Ms not even connected to anything--gotta change that. But then I have to get more computers working.

My wife owns Filco Metallic Blue 104 with MX Blues that I gave her couple years ago. She recently bought herself a CM Storm Quickfire XT with MX Browns for the office because her colleagues were complaining about the MX Blues being too noisy. She doesn't like the IBMs for some reason, totally prefers MX Blues above all :)
Still she thinks I'm crazy having half of basement full of vintage keyboards, plenty of keyboards in my office room which I regularly rotate, and a mini custom keyboard factory which I run as a hobby in my workshop :D

I would buy a desoldering gun to save a lot of time or just take of the cherry tops and sell the stems. People want clear stems most of the time.

I bought a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate and actually thought it was a great keyboard... until it developed faults within 9-months. And this was even back when they were using genuine Cherry switches and not the junk switches they're using now.
Thankfully I learned my lesson and have been rocking a WASD v1 keyboard for the past several years. Still going strong!

Stereotypes exist for a reason, sure. My point wasn't that women don't like shoes, it was these comments are unnecessary. You could make the exact same argument and not assume someone does a "typical" female thing.
Surely you can understand why painting an entire group of people with a very broad stroke can be annoying. And, as person that was painted with that broad stroke I felt it well within my right to say why that could be handled a better way. Should we all just be quite when we think things can be improved? I make more typos with mechanicals than I ever have with my old scissor switch laptop keybords. That might also be because an increased state of DGAF due to my right thumb being janked up and requiring me to stay off of it.
This is true for me as well. But after typing on scissor switches for more than 10 minutes I get intense pain in sections of my hands.

Depends on how old you are and how often you have to wear ties. I have a good amount to wear, between frat events in college, formal parties and holidays it added up to me. Some people might only wear one for a wedding or a funeral. To each their own.

It's probably just me, but I love Ripster's boldness while never taking a situation too seriously. That's pretty much what immortalizes him in this community as a whole, much to the chagrin of those that ousted him, I'm sure. I know that attitude can't last for long on a forum without a lot of clashing though, but I always get a good laugh from his antics.

I'm a big fan of the light-hearted attitude. Unlike most of you I've only just gotten into the whole mechanical keyboard thing and I will most likely never dedicate myself to it as many of you do. I'm an interested outsider and you guys are full-fledged enthusiasts. Ripster's informative posts are quite useful to me and his snarky attitude (which is rather tame from what I've seen on reddit) just comes off as simple fun.

I do get kind of miffed when a single shot of a POK3R gets a ton of upvotes on reddit whereas it always seems hard to even get to 60 when I upload. My Octagon w/ Jukebox was the highest I ever got at 210, whereas someone's single shot of a b.face got 500+, haha. When you put a lot of work into something, and it doesn't feel appreciated, that kinda sucks.
I don't really understand the mentalities people have on reddit, but I do like the r/MK community, just not the logic behind the voting. It could always be my craptastic camera, but I think I've seen potatoes get a bunch of votes. Either way, karma is so materialistic anyway--it shouldn't annoy me as much as it does, but eh.

Sometimes I think we at geekhack take for granted the fact that mk basically filters and trains a bunch of new people so that we don't get loads of people asking which razor keyboard is the best one for them to buy lol.

I do get kind of miffed when a single shot of a POK3R gets a ton of upvotes on reddit whereas it always seems hard to even get to 60 when I upload. My Octagon w/ Jukebox was the highest I ever got at 210, whereas someone's single shot of a b.face got 500+, haha. When you put a lot of work into something, and it doesn't feel appreciated, that kinda sucks.

+1 I really don't get the blind animosity between the groups. Most people only see the worst of each "rival" community as those particular moments are showcased to them, and they miss all the positive moments that are far more prevalent IMO.

I don't really understand the mentalities people have on reddit, but I do like the r/MK community, just not the logic behind the voting. It could always be my craptastic camera, but I think I've seen potatoes get a bunch of votes. Either way, karma is so materialistic anyway--it shouldn't annoy me as much as it does, but eh.
I feel ya. I've had some good success with reddit posts, but it does kinda bum me out when I post something that I think will be well-received and it isn't, while - as you say - something that's been posted hundreds of times is upvoted more. And of course the karma isn't supposed to be what matters, but hey, it's fun to get some recognition. :)
It also really bums me out that I'm pretty sure there's a few redditors that automatically assume that I don't like reddit since I'm a GH mod. :| reddit got me into the hobby, how could I hate /r/mk?? Ah well, in the end it's not something I lose sleep over, but still. :P

For those wondering, I wanted to change the layout and I wanted to customize the switches (and get rid of the MX Greens) to my liking.

I literally desoldered the switches, held the PCB upside down and used a torx driver to forcibly shove the switches out of the plate by pressing against the stem well of each switch. It was violent. Very violent. I actually had a little box under the PCB to catch the switches when they were flung downwards at high speeds.
It pretty much goes without saying that I had some ruined pads and LED traces. Miraculously, I somehow managed to fix every single issue despite a myriad of problems. I was determined not to let my $450+ purchase bite the dust.
I'm not sure if the plate was bent or what, but my technique was so terrible with plate-mounted boards due to my aforementioned inexperience, that I had to wedge the plate up with strips of solid neoprene to stop it from being pushed down (even with switches mounted). I think the switches did clip in, but the plate was just loose. It might've gotten slightly bent from all the trauma, lol.
Now I have a tool I use to clip onto switches and pull them out of the plate and I also use ChipQuik for desoldering those kinds of SIP sockets, as it makes them like 80% easier to desolder. Even using a vacuum-powered desoldering iron doesn't make THAT easy without ChipQuik.

It sounds like you pulled out the plugs in the hole. In som cades pass are connected through Cooper cylinders to the othwr side of the PCB. Or you simply ****ed the traces :)

I'm guessing the traces. In both boards I only changed a couple of switches around, and based on which keys are not functioning it seems very likely that the traces are where the problem lies.

I'm pretty sure they need all those screws to make sure the PCB has constant pressure across it. With how sensitive the capacitive switches are, I think if it were allowed to flex and move more, it would cause issues. But I don't have a source on that, I just think I remember hearing it once upon a time and it makes sense.

Agreed, you get into the habit of slowly wiggling the cap back onto the wire after a while. Actually becomes satisfying after a while.

I literally tried for over an hour to get 5 stabelizers on. But I have heard that Razer (Which is the KB I am using), do use cheap quality. I've got parts for a 60% board lying around waiting to be assembled and I keep playing with the 67g Zealios and my lubed and stickered 62g MX Clears - the Zealios are way more tactile

My (sort of) keyboard confession. I was painting the switch plate for my Dell AT101W green during winter. Decided I wouldn't back my black car all the way out of the garage. Ended up getting a fine mist of green paint on the front end. It has been 8+ months and I haven't told my wife :O.lol! The good news is that will probably come off very easily with a clay bar. I've actually taken off another car's paint from mine using one before. (Wasn't happy about having to do that though.)
So my confession--got stopped in India customs because of my IBM M in my checked bag. They xrayed the bag and then asked me if I had a dvd player or an LCD television in the bag (people bring these in from outside because the prices here are insane--you can't get a 50"+ one for under $2k usd). I answered no, but they said there's a large object showing up on the x-ray. I asked if they would let me see the screen and the backing plate for the M stood out like a tank in a parking lot. :)) I laughed and told them it was a computer keyboard (as if it was nothing) and they let me move on, lol.

Put some victorinox on the wire where it meets the inserts and on the bit where it clips in on the plate, and you should have a much quieter experience! Seriously, it almost sounds just like a non-stabilized key when lubed properly.
Unless, of course, you're using wire that sits loosely in the retaining bit on the plate, then it's bound to rattle until it's tightened up.

Yeah, I'm not sure which I like more, to be honest. I really enjoy costar when it's lubed to the point of being practically silent in terms of rattle. Cherry is about the same, hmm... I dunno though! Cherry is definitely more elegant looking and preferred by most Korean custom designers. Even gold costar wire wouldn't look as classy, haha.

The pcb supports pcb mounted stabs but the plates that are shipping don't (only support costar stabs ala KC60).

It's super relative, I think. I absolutely loved my Octagon when it was the main contender for a daily driver. The Infinity was nice, but didn't really compete with my Octagon for love. :P
It isn't until now that I'm starting to question my affinities! I'm still going to get a second Octagon though! I have been very tempted to modify it for Alps if an Alps PCB isn't offered. :eek:
TBH, it could be the wooden wrist rest digging into my palm that's annoying me about the Octagon. I've never had it bother me before, but it's beginning to now! I admittedly use a soft Grifiti rest on my Hammer, and it's comfy.
I started with that one, but then I moved to the Royal Glam for the Octagon.
I still blame my RSI! Ugh, I hate this stupid injury.

It is a fantastic board and it's also in my favorite color (I'm the weird one that loved red and blue anodized aluminum cases)! Well, it's not so bad, but maybe I'm just growing out of SA-profile caps after using Alps so much, which have more traditional caps that are closer to Cherry profile.
If insanity ever strikes me at the right opportunity, I might just give it a shot and modify it for Alps switches. We shall see. :P
EDIT: On second thought, a b.miniX2 PCB might be a better idea to experiment on. :P
Er, but it has different mounting points, I think, as well as a USB connector in a position that'd make it incompatible with the Octagon unless I shifted it or improvised, hmm.

- It is my beater board.
- It's been with me for 5 years, flown around the world.
- I haven't legitimately cleaned it in 2 years.
- It has battle scars from being dropped on the ground numerous times.

I find myself taking it out of my drawer just to press the keys. The thing is though, I don't know if I truly love it, or I've somehow managed to deeply brainwash myself into liking it over time...

Black keys are DSA, Escape is Row 3 SA? And alphas/F-keys are OEM? At a glance, it looks nice, but paying attention to it makes you go... huh
Only reason I have a board with mixed profiles is because I haven't taken off the HiPro sliders off the numpad side of my 104ug. I have housings/sliders for standard topre for it, but haven't taken the board apart since I made my 87ug. But at least its a separate part of the board.

I like this comparison, GON PCBs make a great platform for a good quality custom and you can keep your investment low if you mix them with alternate cases instead of going for the GONs originals that tend to be a bit overpriced.

So I actually bought the case first and had to wait a few weeks until my Poker 2 arrives LOL.
Then after I proceed to buy custom braided cable, modded the board with LED lights, bought custom keycaps for it, only to realize I still don't like anything smaller than full size keyboard (also don't like non-standard layout for muscle memory reasons).
So my Poker 2 just look good in pictures but it's my least used board.

I love the keyboard, but it cost me way too much and it also took 2 months for it to arrive. What I learned is that I won't buy anything from Corus directly again. I still haven't gotten the extra keycaps I ordered from them. I haven't told anyone that it cost me this much either
I like MX clears and greens (I thought I liked browns before I went back to my greens and then to browns again)

Man, I feel like I dodged a bullet with Corus. My Pok3r came in with no problems, and they were super quick to send me a replacement key when it came with two H keys. Everyone else seems to have issues with them...

I know the SGI isn't that bad, if I melted a keycap then I would have been really pissed.

Ahh yeah, ouch. Even with a filler for that melted gouge, the SGI granite case is so uniquely speckled and such that it would be hard to make it blend in. One on of my boards, I used a piece of beige/off-white plastic from a scrapped keyboard to fill in the gap using plastic welding with a flat tip on my soldering iron. Worked really well and you can't even tell it was there, thought it was on the bottom lip (but did cut into the side of the case and could be seen).
Yea, there's no way to fill it, it would honestly look worse. The spot isn't that big, it was only there for a sec until I yanked it off. Originally it looked a lot worse since there was some melted plastic bits and residue around the mark. Cleaned it up with a file as you can see in the picture. Now its nice and smooth. it almost looks like something was dropped on it.
Still kinda sad considering the great condition of it, only a bit of rust on the plate and a bad Numpad + key, otherwise it was brand new!
The tip of the iron got really close to the Alt keycap, thank god I didn't melt that. :confused:
The light at the end of the tunnel is that the filing revealed the original color of the plastic, it took off the very top coat where it yellowed. Looks great...

I actually have grey ABS plastic. If you mixed it with a bit of that speckled stuff they put in their own mix, it might work, but nah. I mean, at least it's just the top case, so you can always replace it with one from another SGI. Keep a look out for anyone throwing their SGIs away after scrapping them or something. :) See, if it were the bottom case, then it'd be tricky, at least if you want to keep all the serial number information and such true to the board.
Oh man, good thing you didn't singe or melt the cap, that would've been so bad. If it were me, I'd probably want to flip a table at that point. A lot of things have driven me close to the breaking point in this hobby before; by that, I mean customization or assembly projects. Like, my Octagon was a nightmare, some paint jobs I've done had very close calls toward complete screw ups (my Infinity was a nightmare there), and my Hammer Alps Duck Eagle project got to that point a few times.
I never threw in the towel though, haha.
At least your SGI still functions though! Again, just keep an eye out for anyone who might have spare parts. :)
Oh, have you not retrobrighted the plastic yet? Yeah, it doesn't look bad TBH. Sometimes battle scars are nice to have. :D

The light at the end of the tunnel is that the filing revealed the original color of the plastic, it took off the very top coat where it yellowed. Looks great...
I actually have grey ABS plastic. If you mixed it with a bit of that speckled stuff they put in their own mix, it might work, but nah. I mean, at least it's just the top case, so you can always replace it with one from another SGI. Keep a look out for anyone throwing their SGIs away after scrapping them or something. :) See, if it were the bottom case, then it'd be tricky, at least if you want to keep all the serial number information and such true to the board.
Oh man, good thing you didn't singe or melt the cap, that would've been so bad. If it were me, I'd probably want to flip a table at that point. A lot of things have driven me close to the breaking point in this hobby before; by that, I mean customization or assembly projects. Like, my Octagon was a nightmare, some paint jobs I've done had very close calls toward complete screw ups (my Infinity was a nightmare there), and my Hammer Alps Duck Eagle project got to that point a few times.
I never threw in the towel though, haha.
At least your SGI still functions though! Again, just keep an eye out for anyone who might have spare parts. :)

I melted the legs off a switch then ripped it out with pliers... PCB still works.

I judged MX browns without giving them a fair chance at first and jumped on the "They feel like Reds with crap stuck under them" Band wagon. With some extended use however they became my favorite Cherry switch both for feel and typing speed.

The first time i had ever dealt with Costar stabilizers i yanked on one with tweezers by the end the wire inserts to and cracked it. I was too lazy to order a replacement part so that keyboard sat unused for 3+ months until i did.

One of the "windows" keys ended up pulling the through-hole out with it. The anchor leg used some tough to melt solder. No loss for me!
It at least looks reasonably close to a proper keyboard now. Might get a thin sheet of black plastic laser-cut to cover the whole top of the keyboard and blank off those damned switches good'n'proper.

I remember spilling liquid on it that night, frying the pcb and rendering it useless. There were some other issues that were wrong with it (don't remember what) and in my inebriated logic I needed to break it. So I slammed it on my knee, to the surprise of all my friends (even muttered "I'm going to break my keyboard" but apparently no one heard me), and black membrane nipples exploded all over the dorm room. It was glorious! Later, we used them as a prank on my roommate by putting them between his sheets--my only regret for that night.
Fireworks: best use of membrane rubber ever!

Even when I use cheap-o-matic rubber dome boards I'm constantly cleaning the caps. About once a month I'll remove some caps to clear out underneath the problems areas. I'll use filtered water for the top of the caps, sometimes I'll just a disinfectant wipe.

I did mine is Sunny Texas (SGI Granite - identical) just a few month ago once it was nice and sunny outside. Took a couple of days in the Texas sun with some Clairol Creme Developer (stronger than Retrobrite and $5/bottle).
Admittedly I just did the top case since it was just aweful and the back was not bad. I did end up with a tony bit of streaking which went away in a couple weeks after which has not happened on anything else I have retro'd. the keycaps on these are the best alps caps out there I am sure (yes even above the AEKII) and I just love the slant on the font. BY FAR (IMO) the nicest looking and performing BigFoot (even heavier than the Dell 101w) and somehow though they have the same damped switches as the later AEKII's they are so much more crisp (yes, I have multiples of each... don't judge me!).
Confession: I hate anything above a 75% keyboard after a while..... I am a programmer and I feel like I am wasting so much of my hand movements to type on a big keyboard for day-to-day work use.
Other Confession: ABS is a bad plastic for keycaps. It wears far too quickly. I wish we could find a way to coat ABS keycaps to prevent the shine-a thon that destroys grip and texture. Cherry caps that haven't been used feel great... for about 3-4 months.

You should do all of the case, it look a lot better. Since swapped my SGI With SKCM Oranges. Also use the cream btw.

I think I can kind of relate to this...
I don't have anywhere near that much stuff, and I'm not done adding to my collection, but I still find my thoughts turning on occasion to the subject of a purge. Everything I have seems to have some kind of problem, though the severity varies (ironically, the one Kailh keyboard I have is probably the closest to working properly). I kind of feel like I should just trash 4-6 of the boards with more serious issues, since I just wind up getting frustrated with them when I swap them in anyway.

I'm using Buckling Springs and I miss my MX Blues sometimes. I used them very heavily so they were very worn in and consequently very smooth.
Typing on them felt very light and effortless, Buckling Springs are superior in almost every way but they feel like walking up stairs.

Yeah... I kinda just stared at the keyboard after the orange juice spilt all over it and I knew it was over. It was from 1avid_collector and cost $429 + shipping... The most I've ever spent on a board ever. Look on the bright side, I found about the Model F AT and ANSI modded it and its so much better so yay :D

2. I prefer Black Alps to White Alps.

i'm not quite that high, but i've probably dropped close to 1.5k in the past year on keyboards and (mostly) artisans. the nice thing is that items retain value so well in this hobby that reselling at what you paid really isn't an issue.

+1 yeah, buying for trying out is part of the searching process you should do to find out what do you really like about keyboards.
It really is, it'd be great if all the switches were available in a store near me but the reality is they aren't. But it's nice that you can try a board, and if you don't like it you can offload with relative ease

I like artisans and I spend quite an amount on them.
Ever since I returned to the keyboarding game this year, I have so far managed to control myself to only join official sales/ raffles instead of succumb to my darkest desire and spend $$$$ on aftermarket.
I hope I can continue with this and only join official ones as it helps both supporting the artists and also my finance.
Also, it feels good coming back to a hobby that I once left :)

Tengo quatro teclas con mx transparente. Hay una gran differencia en el sentido comparando a mx azules. Cuando oprimes el boto se siente mas la tactilidad. Yo creo es por que todos mis mx transparente tienen resorte 62 gramos.

It was a very scientific process, involving Pinckney Bend casked gin mixed with Punt e Mes and a dash of Peychaud's bitters (I hope there are some cocktail geeks around).
As for Topre... I'm using Clears in my main board, and I'm finding the Topre 45g's feel very light and a bit mushy in comparison. Also, the novelty of the "thock" sound has worn off, although I still enjoy it just as much as other clacks. I still like them better than Browns or chicklets, but 55g's might be better for me :)

Heh. And yeah, I'll confess I haven't used my Browns since I got Clears as well. I actually am using an HHKB and getting tons of accidental keypresses when I'm not actively typing. Maybe my fingers are getting heavier. I'm actually starting to like how Greens feel :eek:

It only works well when the items are mostly flat. Pitas, Pizza, naan. I haven't tried anything else besides cheetos since holy crap everything else slightly watery goes into the cracks and it ends up smelling like death. I dunk it in a medical alcohol mixture to sanitize.

Yes. I hate chords. But I turned my shift into a one-shot modifier: tap it once, and the next key pressed within 3 seconds will be shifted, and only that one. Tap it twice, and shift will remain pressed until toggled off. Holding works as usual, but I don't use that behaviour. But even before I arrived to this setup, my Shift was sticky, and I loved it.

When I get lazy working from home I sit and use my Dell XPS 13 on the couch instead of one of my endgame-adjacent 60% boards/multiple monitor desk setup.Yeah sometimes I can't be bothered to sit at the battlestation so I just grab a laptop or tablet and sit on the couch.
Sometimes I'll spend weeks like that not touching the pc. Comes and goes. I do feel bad for not typing on my mechs though. About the only thing that's hard about the whole scenario.

BAE layouts vary of course, but they get the same amount of keys as ANSI, and at least they get what's pretty much objectively the best enter key shape. And like I said, ANSI just looks ugly to me. It doesn't look the way a keyboard should look. If you look at abstract or cultural depictions of enter keys, you'll see most of the time it's shaped like a BAE.

If I was smart, I would disassemble it and offer parts to people as they need them, it never hurts to have extra conical springs and domes, and I could certainly offer the hyperspheres to somebody or even try it again with a barebones Novatouch getting either helpful advice or actual help with the installation.
I'm sure it will sit there until I switch jobs, not to be completed due to a combination of stubbornness and ignorance :-[

stems and domes are quite valuable if you can be bothered ripping the board apart again

I'm half tempted to just list the broken Noivatouch on an as-is basis at $75 + shipping with the understanding that I can't guarantee the condition of the sliders Wouldn't be a bad deal as the hyperspheres are worth ~50 on their own.
Do people list broken boards like that? If so, I'll post it in the classifieds when I'm permitted.

The board itself looked like a model M clone. Fast forward to today, and I got a yellowed Chicony with white Alps. It's the closest thing I found to that board, but I don't think it was it. Stabiliser mechanism is different on Chicony, and I think that the bottom side is different as well, although I am not sure.

also once whilst in the process of assembling my homemade laser-cut mini keyboard, i soldered over the base plate resulting in melting acrylic splodges from where the soldering iron was 'spitting' (might make a post about it when i get the teensy installed)
in short, i now own a rusty dell and a melted acrylic plate :)

Giving away a perfectly good SGI keyboard with Alps of some variety. I didn't know anything about Alps even though I had a Focus FK-2001 with blue Alps that I'd purchased in 1989.
Putting an Intertec Superbrain CP/M computer that someone had given me on the curb during a move. I never got around to figuring out what switches it had.

At least when it comes to Alps, I like all three switch type varieties. Linear is probably my favorite on average and it's what I started with, but the other types keep it interesting.
Alps SKCL Green, SKCL Brown :thumb: Blue Alps are always nice though.
For Cherry MX, vintage MX black is my favorite, hands down.

Looks like it was actually a Commodore PC10-II dual 5.25 floppy business computer. For sure dual, one disc was MS-DOS while the other was whatever game I wanted to play. Probably a stock keyboard for that model - I don't see how a 122 terminal could connect up to the PC10-II unless there is an adapter that I'm just not aware of. Mega Man 1 was agonizingly slow on that computer so I'm willing to bet it wasn't the PC40-III. Jesus, there are a lot of Commodore computer models floating around out there. The PC10 line totally makes more sense considering that my mom was learning COBOL in college during the time they bought the new PC.

The primary reason why I use my Phantom is that it was my second most expensive keyboard and I can't realistically expect to get my money back. If I don't use it, it'll just collect dust in the closet. It's sunk cost fallacy, really.

Clearly there's enough interest and material to start a new thread on how people think Chyros's name is pronounced and how it's actually pronounced. Chyros could pretend to change the actual pronunciation from time to time just to keep everyone on their toes. Coy? Maybe, but it'd all be part of the legendary suavity, the mystique, the understated authority the MK world has come to adulate—in the form of the one, the only Chyros. (BTW, how do you pronounce that again?)

Fast forward maybe 8-10 keyboards later with different switches, korean springs, keycaps, form factor and different stabilizers. I realize I still like my first 2 keyboards the best. Not sure if it's different batch of MX Brown or maybe it's used but I haven't come across switches that smooth again. Also after trying clipped Cherry stabs I still find myself liking costar stabs betyer, it's just buttery smooth after lubed. I also couldn't use any other form factor because I use number pad a lot. I also tried thick ABS / PBT but I find the stock thin ABS sort of have it's charm and it's a little bit more "clacky" than the thick keycaps.
Looking back, I probably could've saved myself a lot of money if I knew (like maybe $2500 down the line), but at the same time I'd never know until I try lol. Now I went full circle and back to where I started. Only thing I didn't regret trying is Topre, it's just different in its own way.
So I guess the journey is part of the fun (Just sucks for my wallet lol). :)

I'm pretty much the same way. I prefer linears the most, but it can be really fun to switch up into clicky or tactile for a bit. Contrast helps me appreciate the differences in my keyboards.

I did this once. However when I don't use it for a few minutes I turn it to the lowest setting which is 150 degrees or something. I left it on onvernight.

I in poor practice often eat and drink beer, soda or whatever near my board and staying up past my bedtime doing whatever project I'm working on, fall asleep and spill my beverage and frack up the board and have to desolder everything and replace or clean the switches.
