Title: Frost Spirit on sale (sale ended, post sale review)
Post by: tp4tissue on Fri, 17 December 2021, 07:52:58
Frost Spirit 140 by thermalright,  it's "ALLEGEDLY" within 2degree performance of NHd15,

But Right now RGB version is on sale for $36 (@amazon),   vs $100 for an nhd15.

4x 8mm (AGHP) heatpipes,  1x14cm conveyor fan, 1x12cm push fan, (sony fluid bearings)

Mirror finish copper contact plate,  NICKLE plated.

Version 2 and above does not have mirror plate, instead it has AGHP which is upgraded from the original.

They're not very good rulers. if you want King of rulers, get a machinist ruler.

Thermalright ? They've been around forever.

Claim to fame was the Thermalright "TRUE" copper heatsink, ultra-heavy destroyer of motherboards in the i7 920 days.

Remember This classic beauty, 52x copper fin stack? 1.9 kg (4.18lb) of pure copper

It's Huge ...  /installed

~1 C difference @ idle
~5 C difference @ load    ___vs $10 zalman cooler.

For $38 after tax, that's $7.6 per Degree,    Worth ?

Ya bro, This day we can't trust any new brand's in the computer community. You may know that Toshiba changed its name in the memory community. they changed their name from Toshiba to Kioxia

trusting brands is the best way of getting bad surprises, trust reviewers, much better, saying that i still do fall in this trap anyway...
and i still do not understand why Toshiba renamed themselves, they had a decent reputation i though.

Yeah, you are right, the best thing to do is to trust reviewer's but now a day's companies pay reviewers a decent amount to give a positive review. Now, this is a new marketing strategy. because of this, we cant find prefect product for our. I wish there should be a website or person who can give a genuine review.

TRUE is an abbreviation of ThermalRight Ultra Extreme - I still have a non copper one somewhere but it's too dense for my noise needs.  Always wanted a copper but was $$$ and I was a student.

They were known for their non-flat bases (the middle stuck out so needed lapping) but looks like they've fixed that so that's great pickup I'd say :thumb:

i always heard that the non flat base was to compensate for non flat cpus...

Could be, but what are the chances the dent in your CPU would match their bump?  The solution was clear - spend ages making a lot of mess and lap both!  At least that's what young me did...  I have three CPUs from that era and would have to find pics of the backs to identify what they are (https://cdn.geekhack.org/Smileys/solosmileys/laugh.gif)

Intel's IHS <recent era>are concaved.  That's why bases became optimized for them to be convex.

On lapping, usually we lap BOTH the ihs and the base, otherwise it wouldn't improve the temp much.

AMD's ihs is flat, so recently released coolers, (still convexed) mostly, but have gotten flatter.

The reasoning for concavity is to retain the goop better right above the die (where it's most important) instead of it smearing outward. This was more performant after they stopped soldering the die.

The Frost spirit deal passed.

But their PA120 Peerless Assassin 6x6mm heatpipe cooler is going for $38, $41 $3 coupon, so that's still a good deal. about 80% as performant.

Their top shelf Frost Commander 5x8mm pipe FC140 is going for $~65, imho that's acceptable, even though it was on sale for slightly less on Cyber monday.

Search the model, not the name.

I wouldn't spend that much for the Commander unless you actually have a 200-250watt chip though.

PA120 can do up to 200watt no sweat.

6 month update,  Love this cooler, it hasn't spun up past 500rpm, ever, during normal usage/ halo infinite.

Originally thought without fan blades exposed to ram would result in hot ram, but there is enough low pressure differential in the periphery such that ram is nice and cool.
