The J-01 Rev1 is the next revision in the series of boards. Historically there has been a prototype of the J-01 back in late 2017 and a small run of the same prototype in early 2019.

Since then the board has been back on the drawing board / butchers block to improve the board and I now feel like it’s ready for a more public outing via a Group Buy. Disclaimer up front, I fully appreciate that this board is not for everyone, and some people will enjoy its features, whilst others won’t; but I’m hoping that the people who do like its design will appreciate me bringing it to the community.

Changelog (changes from the original J-01 to rev1):
   

• - Completely re-drawn from scratch & updated to a ‘seamless design’
• - Removed Brass mid layer (removes weight, reduces cost, improves sound)
• - New PCB by Flex utilising the Ai03 unified USB C daughterboard
• - New Gasket shape but utilising the same Gasket system only now with adhesive on each side to improve assembly
• - Revised pen rail to be screw in over magnets to make more secure
• - Two tone case as standard to create a visual distinction and highlight stylistic choices
• - Option for 8 macro keys (+logo) or 10 macro keys
• - Logo depth changed from 0.5mm to 0.3mm

All these changes were based on feedback from the prototype round and further experimentation with the J-01 and J-02, as well as marking a natural transition.



Design Philosophy:

The design is based around the principle of allowing sound development within the case, through the use of a carefully designed acoustic cavity, but with enough mass and dampening (via fully isolating gaskets) to ensure a clean and crisp note.

Visually the design is a modern take on vintage keyboards, specifically inspired by the pen rail on a Model M, and the Macro keys seen on the vintage Commodore boards – but in a more current style. This leads to chunky bezels, solid pen rail, and reduced base with the majority of the mass under the Alpha keys to improve sound. Grey base and accent pen rail to accentuate the main body, without drowning it out. The front lip and side profile is designed to give the board a look of one that is floating, without drawing the eye. Optional Brass pen rail to add a touch of elegance.

Prototype:

A prototype is on hand and requires only minor amends that wont impact the quality of the board. This includes revised plates, PCBs and Gaskets. You can review the build stream for the board here and pictures later in this thread: (as of 20/07 @19:00 UK time the VoD is still uploading...)

• Blue top – Pantone 533 C (grey base and pen rail) (please note this is the same pantone as the Aegis Navy option)
• Limited Edition E-white (top and bottom case) and Brass pen rail
• Optional Brass pen rail can be added to any order as an extra

I've always fancied the pen rail; functional and classy. Does anyone have a daily driver that the pen rail gets a lot of use? I'm curious to how the ano holds up to nicks and scratches. I'd be scurred to use it on the e-white.

i use pilot hitec C or signo DX's. Both in their plastic case and the j01 has held up fine. Im sure if you use a brass pen case or a Ti pen case and you are super rough with it, you could wear spots in or cause some nic's. but nothing that wont look better with some break in. it will be hard to have super pristine but also used daily with metal pen cases + white. though e white might offer a decent protection layer.

Yes, I've been using the OG J-01 for a couple of years daily now with a solid brass pen, there are no marks in the anode, but the brass on the back of the brass penrail has increased patina, I assume from passing on the oils from my hands. If it was clearcoated that would be less of an issue.

No - the top and bottom case will be different. Grey base with either the red, black or blue. Onlt the E-white option will come with the same colour top and bottom case.

The reason for this is that I prefer the aesthetic of the grey base with the coloured tops as it helps to achieve the floating look of the board, and fits the design language better. The E-white version achieves similar through natural shadows as the top is much paler than the other colours.

Just on the Blue, someone mentioned that this was the same Blue as the Aegis navy. I reached out to Aeryxz and confirmed it is the same pantone.

Hey folks - quick update:

Thank you to everyone who filled out the feedback form, I've now closed it down. In all we got about three times the number of responses I was expecting, with a huge array of suggestions. Sadly most of the suggestions are compromises I don't want to add to this board however, here are some suggestions that made the cut:

    i) 6u spacebar / row - will be added to PCB layouts only (ofc plate files will be public once the GB closes)
    ii) Split Spacebar option - will be added to PCB layouts only (ofc plate files will be public once the GB closes)
    iii) FR4 plates - will be included in material options

97.5% of responders voted 'yes' to purchasing one, and 2.5% responded 'maybe'. Given this, I intend to make 150 units available with a caveat - if those sell out within the first day I'll open up another 50 for a total of 200 24 hours later. For successful buyers a form will be issued via email for you to select your options. These will be FCFS.

There will be a raffle for the 20 Limited Edition E-white spots one week prior (and some additional F&F LE spots at my discretion).

Prices and dates for both LE and standard versions will be announced soon - I'm currently working through these but expect the date to be late August.

Asking since the dark navy board with pink accent and pen rail in the J-02 render for the GMK Pink on Navy IC looks sleek af (yes, I know this is the J-01 and not the J-02 used in that render, but I think it would still look just as good)

Yes and no, it will have an MOQ for any colour options as an addition later, but I'm happy to entertain te idea (personally thinking of doing a full eva themed one later down the line)

Since the rails don't seem to be painted, you could also anodize it with a voltage regulator, some electrodes, and some acid (or a car battery if you're broke and ratchet, but know what you're doing) and you could get the aluminum one to be whatever color you want (including black). It's a finicky process though but you could also get someone to do it for you relatively (in the custom world at least) cheap

 - Limited Edition Raffle - Opens 29th August for 24 hours. Winners Drawn and invoiced on 31st August - 72 hours to pay.

 - Standard Edition - FCFS @ prototypist.net 5th September - 200 units. If all units sell silly quick - 50/100 more 24 hours later (y'all seem hungry enough for this)

Yup I'm planning to do that if I'm lucky enough to get one of the board. Been wanting to try that since I read and watched the infill tutorial by Jae

F1-10 looks really clean though, but IMO the logo makes for a personal touch of the board maker/designer, something I really like.
